Lawson's goal is to categorize different printing types ("fonts" in the computer world) "... in a logical system based first upon their structure and seondly upon their historical derivation." The kind of font makes a real difference in the feel and sense of the work written in it, so this isn't just a mouse-milking exercise in taxnomic detail for its own sake. This book goes a long way towards meeting its goal. It describes the major structural families of Roman letter forms, based on stroke weights and emphasis, style of serifs (if any), and historical origin. There are plenty of visual examples for most of the text, critical for training the eye. This brief book is certainly a good start. It's just a start, though. Lawson chose a brief format for this book. That avoided tedium, but necessarily omitted examples and discussions that could heve deepened the presentation. The section on display fonts is the briefest, probably because the range of display fonts is widest and hardest to divide into tidy compartments. Instead, Lawson relegates all special cases to the "hell box," the bin where damaged type was dumped on its way to being melted down. This, I think, is a symptom of the book's weakness: the tendency to force type faces into his Procrustean categories, and gloss over whatever didn't fit.He acknowledges that "Exact classification of the many types which can conceivably be listed as decorative is not easy." I would argue that rigid classification is not always desirable and is often impossible. Lawson mentions Knuth's MetaFont program in passing, and that tool (or another like it) inflicts mortal wounds on any body of categories. Whatever the diagnostic point that separates one class from another, in serifs and bracketing, emphasis, decoration, etc., the clever artist can defeat it. It would be a freshman computing exercise to morph two (or more!) fonts into each other, straddling the line of distinction with one foot firmly on each side of the divide. If not taken to dogmatic extremes, type taxonomy can be helpful in a variety of ways. It establishes a common language, allowing terse exchange of complex ideas. When classification fails, as it surely will at some point, the typographer needs a descriptive vocabulary that calls out a font's unique structure in equally concise words. Lawson seems to have become so dedicated to classification that he under-represents the rich descriptive vocabulary needed for the second half of the job. This is a good introduction, and may work well if type is a tool rather than a passion for you. This book will probably disappoint the specialist or advanced student, however. Other books give more detailed description and in more specific terms.//wiredweird

Ernle Bradford has given us a very good account of the Siege of Malta in 1565 - the last stand of the Knights Hospitallers. I know, it wasn't their last action, but was certainly the high point and they would continue to fade away as the one of the last vestiges of the medieval world. After their retreat from Rhodes, the Knights of St. John, known as the Hospitallers, were without a headquarters, a base and a home. Eventually, the Spanish king Phillip II gave them the small island of Malta as their fiefdom. The hot, infertile island of soft sandstone sat in the midst of the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily and divides the east from the west. In the east, the Muslim Turks are masters. In the west, the fractured Christian powers vie with each other (the French actually had a "non-aggression" pact with the Turks) when not threatened from the east. The ever aggressive Muslim Turks realize that Malta is a strategic asset - or liability - and are determined to take it. From Malta, Sicily can be threatened, then Italy. Likewise, their possessions in North Africa as well as shipping can be threatened by the Knights and their war galleys. It is at this point that the author takes up the story.A massive fleet and army of 40,000 sail from Constantinople. A powerful, experienced fleet with elite and fanatical troops used to victories over Christian armies is on it's way. But, the Knights of St. John have a fanaticism of their own and the warrior monks of Christendom are prepared to sell their lives dearly. On the island, Grand Master de Valette shores up his defences, lays in stores for the siege and prepares his troops for the battle to come. The author does a fine job of chronicling the course of the battle from both sides. His history is sprinkled with first-person accounts from both Muslim Turk and Christian Knight. The combat is bloody and brutal with quarter neither asked for nor given. The battle is one of endurance and the author is able to point out each side's mistakes and the turning point of the conflict. This is a very good treatment of the siege and I recommend it with five stars. If you're looking for the bigger picture within which the siege of Malta is but a piece, I recommend Empires of the Sea: The Siege of Malta, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World.

The Ottoman Empire is at its height of power. The only thing holding up turning the Mediterranean into the Sultan’s personal pond is a tiny, insignificant island. The Knight’s of St. John have been granted the island as their last place of refuge to continue on the order. Sultan Solyman is convinced, once the island falls, he will be able to continue his quest of glory and the abolition of Christianity forever.Grand Master, La Vellete has different ideals. He and his Knights will stand fast and protect the faith, even if it means every last person on the island is annihilated. To his God, he will be faithful and die defending the faith. As I read this fascinating story, I couldn’t help but fall back the “Siege of Leningrad from 1941 to 1944. Out numbered, out gunned, out supplied, and despite horrific living conditions and mounting casualties, they held. Not much had changed in three hundred and seventy-six years.Forty thousand Turks took to the sea and only ten thousand came back to tell the tale. A force of five hundred knights and eight to nine thousand men forced the Turks to return home with the jewel in their pocket.La Vellete’s ability to recognize that if the Grand Harbor falls, so does Malta, he took to an aggressive plan of build Fort St. Elmo on the knoll overlooking the harbor. This brilliant stroke of engineering and planning would the cog that would have the invaders attacking again and again and again. Think of Thermopylae and you get the picture. Yes, the fort finally succumbed to the overwhelming weight of the attacks, but at a cost that couldn’t be replaced.I highly recommend this work to those who are ardent followers of history and those who have a slight understanding but want to broaden their horizons.Five Stars

I love this kind of history - well-written, well-researched (largely based on several first-person accounts), full of interesting characters and context. I was somewhat familiar with the history of Malta and the Knights and Turkish struggles for dominance in the Mediterranean from a fictionalized account I'd previously read about the 1551 siege, but I wasn't at all familiar with The Great Siege. I'm very glad I noticed this title; my husband, who's primed to read it next, will be, too.

This book provides a detailed analysis of the Sultan's preparations for the Malta siege and the defense preparations of the Knights of St. John. The siege itself is presented with much suspense. It is well written with many interesting facts. The event itself was important in the sixteenth century in that it the siege marked a turning point in the Sultan's ambitions to control the western Mediterranean. A very well-written and important story. The suggestion that a map or geographical sketches would have helped is well-taken.

Really enjoyed this book especially the Audible version. Reads like a novel. The actual events twist and turn between victory and defeat for both sides. Bradford has done his homework and it helps to have an eyewitness document written not too long after the siege to refer to and to shed light on the defenses within the various fortifications. The book is an easy read. I found myself mesmerized throughout and didn't want to put the book down. Add to it the significance of the seige with respect to the Ottoman intentions in the Mediterranean and this book is easily and highly recommended!

This is a very readable and engaging history. I recognize that experts disagree with some of the details in various histories of the siege of Malta, but I am not competent to hazard an opinion on that, not being a historian myself. However, if there are a few details in question, that is not important to me. I read this for the pure enjoyment of the story and won't remember all the details in any event. This was a page-turner all the way. I'll leave to the experts all the quibbles.

This is such an amusing, madcap series. Two college hockey jocks who slipped into roommate status in their post-graduate years, both presumably straight, who, at just the right moment, discover the truth of their deep feelings for each other. The most bald-faced sort of “gay for you” set up that somehow works because of the youth and jock-innocence of both Glen Merriweather and Tyler Conrad. These are the kind of jock boys of whom I would have been leery in college; and yet in these books, I know that I would love them completely. And then it really gets crazy. Tyler had to marry to claim his inheritance, which both he and Glen assumed might be a few million dollars. Two things happen when they marry: their first kiss at the altar hits Tyler like a thunderbolt. In the most Disney-magical way, that kiss pulls the lid off their passion for each other, carefully buried under a lifetime of social and gender expectations. The second thing is that Tyler’s nice “few million” turns out to be a global corporate empire accumulated by his amoral great-grandfather that exceeds thirty-six billion (with a b) dollars. A nasty corporate Puppet Master inadvertently turns over one of the largest fortunes in the world to his twenty-five-year-old bisexual grandson and his newly-married husband.Hilarity, of a rather sinister kind, ensues. This third chapter in the series takes Tyler (shorter, debonair, raised for wealth, but remarkably discreet about it) and Glen (tall, redheaded and athletic, in spite of which he is a serious medievalist who has just earned his PhD in Scotland) and pushes them even deeper into the Byzantine labyrinths of global power and money. But Glen and Tyler are good boys – Batman and Robin in the face of worldwide purveyors of greed and violence. As they begin to understand the depths of weirdness into which Tyler’s fortune has plunged them, they make it into a lark – albeit a life-and-death lark – through which to redefine the world’s perception of gay couples. They hold hands in public, and they get away with it.The Paris double-cross of the title is the most complicated and messy (and, frankly, hard to follow) of the adventures so far. Just as Glen does, the reader has to simply let go, and trust that Tyler, raised for this, and (as we learn) specially trained as well, will rise to the occasion, bringing with his intelligence and style all of the courage and big-heartedness that his love for Glen inspires in him.For that is at the core: these boys’ love for each other, which began as bromance and evolved into a passionate physical pairing that acts as a force-field, shielding them from all comers. They are the new millennial Theban Warriors. They are the super heroes that every gay teen needs; that every older gay man (such as myself) relishes. It is all a fantasy, but Sanders gives it the kind of simple, honest power that Lord of the Rings (and Harry Potter) had for two different generations of non-straight young readers. These books are all about vengeance – but without violence and without cruelty. Even though published in 2013, this volume speaks directly to the global corporate and political selfishness that seems to be rocking our world in 2018. It reminds us of all the bad that wealth and the quest for it can engender; but it also reiterates the great truth that good can prevail, especially when fueled by selfless love for others.

I have read the first two books in this series and really enjoyed them. Everything I liked about them is even better in this third installment.Glen and Tyler have been together for a few years now. It shows in that they are more confident in their relationship, making the scenes between them, as well as when separated, even stronger this time around.Their humor also comes through in both subtle and guffaw-worthy ways. Yup, I guffawed more than once. And giggled. And definitely smiled. The story is hyper-realistic like the ones that came before it, but it works for these characters and this writer's style. It's total escapism yet it feels earthy due to the relationships between all of the characters: friendships, lovers, family, trusted colleagues, all of them. I like that mix. It gives me the chance to escape and yet easily connect to these people and their surroundings, their conversations and difficulties. The heat level is a bit higher in this one compared to the others, but again it's mostly off-page and isn't the focus of the story. The adventure, danger, humor and heroics are the stars of this show.Due to some of the aspects of this story, it's a bit heavier in subject matter than Glen and Tyler have encountered before. This is never allowed to go so far as to overshadow the action movie type feel to the story, though. Again, an enjoyable mix. This is one that definitely lands on my comfort food shelf, right along with the first two books in the series.I hope Mr. Sanders continues to write more of Glen & Tyler's adventures. I will definitely be there to join in the fun. :DThis was one of the best narrations I've listened to in some time. Truly. Rollins had to do German, French and British accents. He had to speak some lines in French and German. He had a unique voice for each character, all of them different ages and nationalities, some humorous, some stoic, I loved them all. It's not easy to keep all of those straight, let alone do it as a performance and maintain the tension, allow the humor to come through and vary the tenor, along with matching the tone to the intentions of the characters. I just loved it.Sanders has wonderful humor in his stories and Rollins translates that audibly to near perfection. It's such a treat to hear Glen and Tyler teasing each other. It's fun to hear them getting cute and passionate and taking care of business when it comes to helping those they love.I highly recommend Brian Rollins and his narration. I just checked and he's done all three of the books in this series. I may have to pick those up, too! :D

Coitus interuptus, conspiracies, and cabals...oh my! The guys take Paris by storm to save one of their own. New characters are introduced, old characters are fleshed out, and secret plans are hatched and plots foiled. Depending on whose side you're on a great time is had by all most especially the readers. Mr Sanders continues to be a favorite of mine and his characters are pure gold.

Sanders provides a great "ride" with endearing characters. It doesn't get bogged down in long, detailed expositions of the mechanisms by which the technology functions as do many "spy thriller" novels. Rather, the plot keeps moving making this an enjoyable, fast read.

Your favorite gay billionaires save the world. In their own, crazy way. Kind of James Bond meets DaVinci Code. A really fun read!!!

It sucked. It was horrible. I hated it, and I'll give you three reasons why. 1) It was too short! 2) It was TOO short! 3) IT was TOO SHORT! Other than that, it wasGREAT cuz, ya know, it was Glen & Tyler! Now we need Glen & Tyler's Pirate Adventure and it needs to be REEAAAALLLY LOOOONNNGGGGG and REEAAAALLLY SOOOOOON.

I came to these books thinking they were mysteries and discovered instead touching, funny adventures that really draw you in. They are what if books - what if you're a good person, persons and want to do good in the world......and you have enough money to do 'anything'....what might you do especially if there are 'others' who would like you out of the way...... These books are a good romp. Enjoy!
