Enjoyable quick read for me. The style of writing was not flashy, but the description of the terrain and the tactical problems it presented was very good. The author seemed very aware of Clauswitz' [On War] discussion of time and space in combat. The description of the campaign and, particularly the battle of Saratoga was excellent. I have read a number of accounts of this battle and this is the first time I think I got the full picture and understood how it played out.I was a bit surprised by the favorable coverage of General Gates. I suspect that other writers have had their historical lenses spattered by Gates' very sorry performance at the Battle of Camden later in the war and the dispute that he had with General Arnold at Saratoga. However, this account gives Gates credit for a great deal and I suspect that credit was deserved.I particularly liked the author's depiction of armed citizens who were able to step up and defend their homes, their fields, their towns and their country. The tendency these days is to ignore or diminish their solid achievements. The credit given to the frontier riflemen and their very accurate and deadly fire is another mark in favor of this account.I have decided to read the other books in this series.Afterword: I read some of the criticism others have written and I can't disagree with much of it, but my interest was primarily on how the campaign and final battles played out and for me the book was great in those areas.

The book is not especially well written and definitely needs a good editor to take it in hand. A lot of basic typos, choppy spots, and repetition mar it badly. The author has some strange fixations - he seems to have a macabre fascination with the tomahawk as a weapon and many times repeats the same theme about it. At one point he seemed to be about to write an ode to gun ownership, which made no contribution to the narrative and seemed oddly out of the flow of the story. The fact that trees in old growth forests could be 15 feet in diameter gets repeated. In much the same way he seems to have a deep concern that African American participants in the action should be acknowledged. To make sure, he stops the flow of the narrative to mention them. He does this more than once and each time it feels like someone criticized the first draft and he was trying to make up for forgetting. He puffs quite a bit about things other authors did not do, or did badly, but I don’t feel he really plowed any new ground here. This is not a scholarly history. It also is poorly titled. He mentions the various initiatives the British undertook, but really only narrates the Saratoga Campaign. The others are merely mentioned in passing. If this is about the Wilderness Campaign it would seem appropriate to discuss the entire British effort, as he started to do and then trailed off into Saratoga.Definitely a ‘pop history’, it is a reasonable effort overall, but the story has been done elsewhere and I think better.

The American Revolution is one of my favorite periods of history, especially since I didn't have to live through it. The 1777 battles of northern New York State are often overlooked, but they are among some of the most violent and bloody of the war. Michael Logusz takes on the task of presenting the history of this campaign.---The Good Stuff---* The author writes in an easy to read style, and most of the book comes across as an easy to read narrative.* Logusz spends about one third of the book on the battles of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga. He does a very good job of explaining the geography and importance of the waterways, the thick forest with its difficult passages, and presents the strategies and tactics of both sides quite well. I have read other accounts of this campaign, and this is one of the best.* Much of the remainder of the book discusses the battles of Saratoga. Again, the author does a credible job of capturing the flow of the battles.* Logusz tells much of the tale from the point of view of the soldiers and generals involved. This definitely adds to the readability and interest of the book.* The campaign was very bloody-on both sides. The author does a reasonable job of relating the violence without getting overly sensational or graphic.---The Not-So-Good Stuff--- (and I admit to being picky)* The notes are very extensive, and it would have been my preference to move much of the information in the notes into the narrative. I find it very distracting to flip between text and notes, and truth be told, often don't read them until later.* For a story based on characters 230+ years ago, there is a remarkable level of detail in relating the thoughts and actions of relatively unknown individuals. I can't help but wonder about the absolute authenticity of these passages.* Lack of maps, and illegibility of maps included in the Kindle edition damage the text. Many of the important landmarks are either too obscure to be found on modern maps, of the names have changed over the years.* The text can get a bit confusing and choppy. It doesn't help that many of the participants on both sides had similar sounding names.* The Kindle edition, like most other Kindle editions, is plagued by typos, missing text, and other generally annoying 3rd grade nonsense.* Some of the author's viewpoints slip in to the narrative, something almost impossible to avoid.* My biggest criticism is the limitations of some of the material presented. For example, in relating the story of the Battles of Saratoga, Logusz mostly presents General Gates in a favorable light, and makes his cautious nature seem rational. In nearly every other account of this battle I have read, Gates is portrayed much differently and far less favorably. Logusz owes the reader a defense of his opinion of Gates.Similary, Logusz makes assertions which he does not defend or attempt to explain. For example, a good amount of detail is spent discussing the tactical errors made in the defense of Fort Ticonderoga, but no mention of how these errors could have been made.---Summary---I enjoyed the book, although it wasn't the sort of reading that kept me up until 4AM. The author does a credible job of relating the 1777 campaigns, and I would recommend the book without hesitation to anyone interested in the American Revolution. The work does have a number of limitations, which keep it from being a great book.

This first volume is a well-researched account of the Saratoga Campaign: Fort Ticonderroga, Hubbardton, Bennington, Freeman's Farm, Bemis Heights, followed by Burgoyne's a few days later. A great story of endurance, courage, leadership, strategy, and their commitment to fight for freedom. As good a read as Richard M. Ketchum's "Saratoga." I'm glad I read both.

Two management professors read their spirited analysis of why some companies become great and others don't. Using the "twin" method of selecting two similar companies and following them through time, they track what each did on the way to success or oblivion. Reading chapters alternately, the authors sound enthusiastic about their book, which in this abridgment is fast-moving. Though their material could be a colossal bore in other hands, you can "see" their eyes twinkle as they debunk myths and share stunning insights. Even their research methods are exciting and yet still have bread-and-butter practicality. The many fascinating historical vignettes make this smartly written business audio as good as it gets in this genre. T.W. Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.Summarizing the basic themes:* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignmentUnlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.

[book:Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies|4122] was one of the first business books I've ever read. At the time, as an aspiring entrepreneur, James C. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.

for anyone wanting to know what it takes to be a successful company, read this!"Managers at visionary companies simply do not accept the proposition that they must choose between short-term performance or long-term success. They build first and foremost for the long term while simultaneously holding themselves to highly demanding short-term standards". p182 - one of my my favorite quotes in this book.

Bought this book used after hearing a motivational speaker reference this book. The seller shipped this in record time and the book itself is a great read. This book is not just for people in the business world, but can be applicable to anyone in any field who is looking for lasting success within its organization. Highly recommend this book to anyone!

I honestly think there are better books out there for this subject matter. This book is seemingly a quick read. The tone of voice is as if you’re having a chat with a friend about the topic over a beer. There’s studies and other supporting information behind all of the claims, but it would have been better organized (I think) as a TED talk or research study.

Thoroughly researched and filled with great points. Knocked it one star because, after the first few chapters, it becomes incredibly redundant and it really drags. I could only read about Ford and 3M's same success stories so many times before I became saturated with it and couldn't take another dose. For the last few chapters, I read the first few pages and then went back to the chapter's "Take Away" section and still got everything I wanted out of the book. If an abridged version comes out, look into getting that one instead.

If you have the good to great I feel all info are just copy paste. But was enjoying to read it.

Bought this to share with an intern working for me. Jim Collins has boiled down those criteria and focus areas which real leaders need to dedicate their hours to for long term success. No silly "How to Make Friends..." and other half-baked advice. Jim Collins does research and finds what actually works. My 30+ years in management and leadership matches perfectly. Strongly recommend for students, early professionals interested in long-term success, and the mid-level manager who feels they may not have been mentored in a quality environment.

It's rare that I get so engrossed in a book that I read it all in one sitting, and rarer still for a nonfiction book to do that to me. Yet the pithy, self-deprecating humor in here made me drop everything else for a few hours. I don't generally like political books, but this was fascinating in its perspective - not rehashing every moment of the Obama era but using anecdotes of specific events and then showing how things had evolved to today. The ongoing discussion of the influence of the Internet and then the references to things like Blackberrys and the angst over getting Twitter accounts was a reminder of how quickly things have changed in our world. Even the way the book was put together drew you in, with short chapters and the use of bold face and bullet points in section headings. P.S. The footnotes were hilarious! I wish there were more of them.

Reads like a friendly conversation, sort of like sitting at Pfeiffer’s kitchen table and listening to him offer his perspective on the last decade of his life. Offers personal anecdotes of the Obama presidency that will have you laughing, reminiscing, nostalgic, and hopeful. (The footnotes have my heart)

I've always loved Dan Pfeiffer's mix of humor and analysis on Pod Save America. YES WE (STILL) CAN is the best version of that charm and political thought. This book offers some hilarious (and telling) stories about Dan's time in the White House and what a great boss he had in President Obama, but the book always comes back to a lesson that is relevant to the current tire fire which is the Trump administration. And the cover has Obama dunking on Trump -- you gotta love that!

Hilarious. Inspirational. I thought about calling out sick from work just so I could finish it. Dan offers a unique look into the Obama years, peppered with inspiration, a call more political involvement, and footnotes that are bound to make you laugh. Highly recommend to everyone

Full disclosure: I am a huge Pod Save fan. I was super-excited to read this book, and it did not disappoint. Pfeiffer’s transparency with his mistakes and his triumphs makes for good reading, and the book lays out How We Got Here in a very compelling way. Strangely enough, it also left me with hope. While heinous Republicans may be calling the shots for now, America still has more good people than bad, and we did once elect a good, kind, and intelligent person President. As Obama famously said to Congress after they actually passed a law, “Wasn’t that fun? Let’s do it again!”

So well written, I nearly cried at the end of the last three chapters. I read about a book a month and this is easily my favorite book of the past three years.Dan has hit the absolute perfect balance of storytelling, catharsis, hope and humor. The whole way through, I felt like I had just won an argument with an enemy and gotten high-fives and hugs from all the smartest onlookers. And the footnotes on each page? Super-hilarious.I thoroughly enjoyed the mild snarkiness, but the book is so much more than that. It's an unvarnished inside look into the 2008 campaign, the rigorous eight years of high-stress governing, and the strange election of 2016. Dan's observations are consistently astute and entertaining. If you voted for Barack or like Pod Save America even a little bit, you do not want to miss this!

I was super excited to get a copy of DanPfeifer’s book Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter, and Trump from Twelve Books and NetGalley in return for my honest review. If you know and love Crooked Media and Pod Save America, as I do, you will love this book. If you aren’t familiar with them/him, and you enjoy stories by political insiders, you will love this book. If you are a fan of the 45th President, you probably won’t like it or him/them.Dan Pfeiffer was President Obama's communications director and he currently co-hosts the insanely popular podcast Pod Save America with Jon Favreau, who became Obama’s chief speechwriter despite being in his mid-twenties. These guys have a combination of political savvy and millenial viewpoint that are a refreshing change from the tomes that are churned by the “same old political hacks,”as my friend calls them. After the disastrous (from his – and my—point of view) election of 2016, Pfeiffer was stunned and disheartened, because he had spent years working for Obama, and wasn’t quite prepared for the new Administration. He decided to write about the way politics had changed since Obama’s election in 2008, the role of social media and changing communication methods and styles impacted elections, and how we could keep from going crazy as we try to right the ship.My favorite things about this book, aside from his wicked sense of humor, is the way he works hard to explain why everyone (including him!) got it wrong in 2016, and his advice to Democrats about where we can go from here. This is perfect for people who miss Obama and are appalled/disturbed/frightened by the new President. Four stars.

Our current political reality is a hard pill to swallow, but Dan Pfeiffer at least gives a really funny and digestible personal account of how we got here. The book is motivating and inspiring, and chock-full of fun anecdotes that attest to the brilliance and integrity of Obama and his team. The observations on the (d)evolution of media in the past decade are canny and illuminating, also extremely depressing and worrisome. Review

"A deep examination of the rise of male beauty culture." (The New York Times)"Though the grooming work and shop floor are evocative, Barber's attention moves beyond hair to the social exchanges that take place … bringing together emotional labor, aesthetic labor, and physical labor, all the while highlighting the role of sexuality." (Gender & Society)"A well-researched contribution to the sociology of work, gender studies, and consumer culture … Highly recommended." (Choice)"Barber's book innovatively combines theories of work, gender, and culture. It makes a significant contribution to masculinities research. Anyone teaching or conducting research on gender, social class, qualitative methods, work, inequalities, and culture will find this book to be compelling. It is nuanced and rich in detail." (Men & Masculinities)"What does it mean that contemporary men are going to salons, getting their nails done, or dyeing their hair? Kristen Barber examines how these practices are intimately related to shifting definitions of masculinity, and actually buttress gender, race, and class inequalities. A compelling and colorful read." (C.J. Pascoe author of Dude, You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School)"Barber provides excellent insight into how women groom men while upholding their gender and class identities, and how masculinity and beauty are not at odds with each other. Truly a pleasure." Recommend to anyone studying, or teaching, gender sociology.A compelling analysis of gender dynamics of the booming industry of men's beauty services.

Focus too narrow on two salons, does not survey the changing freedom of men to wear hair longer, in tails, in buns, in curls. Ultimately boring.

I bought for my friend.

This is an amazing book on how wealthy metrosexual men are able to use an industry that has been traditionally understood as feminine. The working class women employed in these industries have to perform emotional labor to pump up the masculine egos of these upper-class heterosexual men. What's also interesting is that having the money to be pampered as a sophisticated metrosexual is a form of class bullying that other men can't afford nor replicate. Liberals often don't understand this form of masculinity and its class nature. Instead, they code it as sophisticated and civilized, a coded classist way of understanding men. I highly recommend this book.

Every time I go get my haircut, I now think of this excellent book.In it, Dr. Babar highlights how gender and class play a part in (re)producing inequalities within the men grooming industries. One of my favorite part of this book was Dr. Babar's analysis of how interactions and encounters take place within the sphere of a men salon. I have new insights about the labor work that is preformed within this space. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in studies of gender, beauty, masculinity, and labor work. This was a great read.

An absolutely brilliant look at how gender inequalities are enacted and reproduced in men's grooming establishments. Will be a go-to book for anyone interested in a sociological take on bodies, masculinities, care-work, or qualitative methods. The writing is lively and engaging to boot.
