I have lived in the Petersburg area all my life but I never knew about many of the personalities and events the author mentions in this book. This is a must-read for not only Poe fans but any history buff.
Exceptionally well researched & dynamic story. Thoroughly enjoyed the writings of my home town and the restoration use of a landmark.

Because Abugel focused on such a specific aspect of Poe's life, he was able to learn things other writers in the past have either gotten wrong or missed entirely.Abugel's casual writing style reminds the reader this is his first work of historical nonfiction. However, he masterfully keeps the reader with one foot planted firmly in the twenty-first century while maintaining focus on the nineteenth by seamlessly weaving in stories about his role in exploring the story.Abugel not only bought and restored Hiram Haines building, he also restored Haines' business. Abugel is the owner and operator of Hiram Haines' Coffee and Ale House in downtown Petersburg. This book was informative and entertaining. I bought the Kindle edition, and it took only twenty minutes to read. There is one page on each fashion disaster, which is followed by a clever four line rhyme. I would recommend this author to your notice for her other two books, but don't start with this one, it's atypical. Wright is a witty, compassionate author, check her out!
Jennifer Wright does it again!This author manages to combine historical factoids with charming humour and wit. A quick read that will stay with you long after you have finished and you will certainly learn a thing or two, especially to be extra careful when strapping on your stilettos or affixing your necktie!
Excellent book, I gave mine as a gift to a friend so I needed to purchase another one. The author is a wonderful writer and I also have her other books: It ended Badly and Get Well Soon. I encourage everyone to buy this book and the others they are great.
Super quick, fun little book with some historical anecdotes. My two issues are that a) it wasn’t long enough, I needed more! And then b) there were some parts that weren’t as factually accurate as they should’ve been (the top hat section, for instance). Super cute otherwise!
It had unusual history no one would think could happen.It is a short read.well written.
There are no actual pictures of the killer fashions just artist drawings. very small book and most of the items I had heard of before.

When I heard there was going to be a revised edition of this book I immediately preordered it. This was well over a year ago, so when it finally came out I was at first disappointed to see many references to out-of-date material. For example the book discusses GCC which has been phased out by Apple in favor of LLVM. Garbage collection it touted as a big new feature, but it has not caught on at all. Finally, the product description says the material is based on MacOS 10.5 and 10.6 (we are at 10.7 currently if you are counting).Also, it is extremely annoying to be charged a premium for the kindle edition over the printed copy. I guess this isn't the author's fault, but still, not cool Amazon.Ok, now the good stuff, and the reasons I gave this book 4 stars. This book has a huge amount of really useful information, and it is presented in a form that makes looking stuff up quite easy. My favorite material presented in this book is the coverage of macros, dynamic libraries (the dyld family of functions), memory management, CFRunLoops, and the section on debugging. Although the product description seems to date the book (mentioned above), this is actually not that important. Almost all of the discussion of GCC can be applied to LLVM. While there are many books that cover UNIX programming, there are very few that focus specifically on MacOS. Similarly there are a lot of books that cover high-level Cocoa programming, but few that dig into lower level details. This book does a great job presenting these UNIX'y, lower details from the perspective of a Mac developer.For the next edition of this book, a couple of things I would like to see:- Less coverage of the most basic UNIX stuff (i.e basic file IO, socket programming). That stuff has been beaten to death and is the same as it was 30 years ago.- Dedicate a few pages to Mach ports. This is a fundamental Mac technology yet there is so little information on it.- Discuss XPC / SandboxingIn conclusion, I would highly recommend this book to fellow Mac developers looking to take the next step from The Big Nerd Ranch's seminal book on Cocoa programming. Don't let the out-of-date references put you off, there is a wealth of information here that is completely applicable and relevant.
This is an awesome book. I have had each edition. The author doesn't go too in depth on all topics, but goes wide and broad and introduces you to topics you won't find anywhere else, and definitely won't find with this kind of context.Some topics require a little back reading, but usually contained in the same chapter. It's not a bad thing, some things just require a bit of background to really grok, and he generally gives you just enough of it to know if you want to learn more elsewhere.The title never made sense to me. More of it is "this is how UNIX really meets the Mac and more stuff that is just Mac only and awesome"It's a tad out of date, but only a little and not so much that you won't still learn a lot and benefit from having this book.
I confess to not having finished the entire book (it's huge), but I can already say this book is a keeper from just having read the first 3rd. There is an entire chapter dedicated to the nitty-gritty of blocks which was fantastic. There are many books which give blocks very superficial treatment (usually a page or two at most); this one gives blocks the attention they deserve (especially as they become the mandatory means of accessing certain functionality in the Cocoa API's). Really the only negatives are the lack of some of the newest content (Clang, ARC, etc.), but apparently the author plans to release updates in the future (from reading his response to Darren Minifie's review) so this is less of a concern. You certainly won't feel cheated as the quality content to cost ratio may be the highest of all OSX/iOS books out there. This is a huge book filled with meat (no fluff here), that manages to make you laugh in a delightfully geeky way (some of Dalrymple's variable names cracked me up for example) and deliver solid content with a voice that is informative, entertaining and much more human than a man page or an Apple doc. This isn't one of those obnoxiously written books where attempts at humor diminish it to the point of being borderline childish such as some of the "Head First" or "for dummies" books. The treatment of the subject matter is quite mature but still very approachable. He also has some valuable insights into gotcha's, issues to consider and edge cases that are easy to overlook--which can be worth their weight in gold if you never have to spend days/hours debugging something you knew to avoid.The biggest editorial criticism I have is that there are code snippets that aren't part of a compilable program, which would have been better as small little programs in main.m. I have found manually keying in examples to be a critical component of self-teaching programming, and when there aren't complete examples to pull from, this becomes impossible. It can be trivial to create your own, but it's much nicer to have self-contained examples that clearly illustrate one particular concept and eliminate the possibility that your example is introducing a flaw or conceptual misunderstanding into it. Kochan is an author who uses this style to great effect. Much of the code in the book is thankfully part of complete programs, but I mention this for consideration in future editions."Advanced Mac OS X Programming" is a must buy for anyone who wants to take their coding beyond the first tier of superficial apps.
My approach to learning Xcode, Objective-C, Cocoa, etc. is to get as many books as possible and expect to learn just a few important things from each one. This book covers a number of topics that you won't find much about elsewhere. Its definitely not a beginners book but if you are reasonably knowledgeable about the topic it might add something to your knowledge.

If you want a greater variety of mecha styles to learn, or more inspiration on how to come up with your own styles, I'd recommend the great books by Sherard Jackson of Antarctic Press and the How to Draw Manga volumes translated from Japanese published by Graphic-Sha: "Giant Robots" by Hikaru Hayashi and "Mech. Drawing" by Katsuya Yamakami.The pro-Plex propaganda smattered throughout the book reads like a corporate statement of a company about to go IPO. You shouldn't have to pay so much for a blatant advertisement.Buy the book if you really want to draw transforming robots and like the particular design aesthetic that Plex embraces.
It's an ok book about drawing transforming robots. I got it to get some ideas. It was cheap enough. A lot of broken english. Despite negatives, I would get if you want to draw robots/ make toys.

Not bad if you need tips on drawing robots..... that transform.
The first thing that is readily apparent upon flipping through the book is that the presentation is very straightforward and to the point. There is a LOT of artwork and comparatively little text, which presents a good step-by-step visual tutorial for drawing.There are a great many types of transforming robots discussed in the book, with one or more examples for each. Everything from aircraft to cars to insects to dinosaurs, and more.The art quality is very good, with an obviously professional hand behind the pen.There are a couple things that detract from this book, however. Firstly, there is almost no reference to the mechanics behind the transformations - no hydraulics, gears, etc. The book's origins in the toy business are evident here. Second, there are no references to other mainstream transformers - like Macross Valkyries, Transformers, etc.Even with these minor quibbles though, I still have to give this book 4 out of 5. It can be a very good introduction to drawing transforming robots. Just be aware that it's an introduction, and not an advanced guide!
Maybe the best way to learn to draw transforming robots is to buy and study actual toys & models. But if that's not an option, a book like this can be a great alternative. Many types of vehicles are depicted here; even a brief section on animal mechs.I recently bought three books on robots. A brief comparison:1. Let's Draw Manga- Transforming Robots. 4 stars. The best book of the 3 in dealing with actual transformations. It shows actual photos of toys, and then plenty of pictures detailing the transforming process. The drawing quality is a little rough but still professional. Better drawing quality would've made this a 5-star book.2. How To Draw Manga- Giant Robots. 5 stars. Phenomenal details for all kinds of robots. It's my favorite book of the 3. It has very little on robots that transform, which is too bad, but few books can match the incredibly detailed instruction here with such a wide variety of designs. It's a visually attractive, well organized effort.3. How to Draw Manga- Mech. Drawing. 3-1/2 stars. Great looking cover; the interior art is professional as well. Some drawings are truly excellent, but many are a bit plain looking. It covers the artistic rendering of mechanical vehicles & items of all types, and not just robots. With very little information on transforming mechs, it's still above average overall.As you can see, each book has its strengths & weaknesses. And each is entirely black & white- no color drawings inside. All 3 are worth getting, if you can find a decent price.
Let's Draw Manga: Transforming Robots, is a great book, written by a notable company. The moment I opened the book, I knew that I was going to learn alot of things, and I was very excited. I am one who is also getting into the manga biz, and I also love to learn whatever I can, from what ever can teach me. And this book showed me that I can take practically any object in this world, and turn it into a robot.By using the techniques they show you in this book, you are able to turn planes, trains and automobiles into any kind of robot imaginable. And with the techniques they show you on how to transform a animal, the possiblities are quite endless, depending on your limit of imagination. By using the tips and tricks they taught me, I was able to transform a PlayStation1 into a robot!I found this book very promising in my future as a manga artist, and I'm sure you would be able to learn as much as I, or even more.

Waste of time
A graphic novel biography of Brazilian soccer player, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known by his nickname, Pelé. The graphic novel covers his life as a poor village boy in Brazil who got a love of soccer (and solid training) from his father whose own pro career was cut short by an injury. It then follows his rise to a pro player and national team member for Brazil to his pro years in the US and his years afterward in government and relief aid work.I went into this knowing nothing about Pelé except that he was a famous soccer player from Brazil. His meteoric rise from street soccer to national team is quite amazing. Like most people, he has his admirable qualities, like his passion for kids and aid work, and his not so admirable qualities, like his weakness for women and unfaithfulness to his wife. This book shows both sides, his moments of brilliance and his faults, applauding the first and bemoaning the latter, but keeps the content appropriate for middle grade readers. The book covers a lot of soccer history and Brazilian history in addition to telling Pelé's story, so I feel like I learned quite a bit from just 140 pages. Soccer is hands down the most popular sport among the students at our school, add to that the fact that this is a graphic novel with attractive illustrations and you’ve got yourselves a bestseller. I can definitely see kids who never usually touch books devouring this. Our school library definitely needs this book, the question is how many copies will I need to order to keep the masses happy.Notes on content (based on the ARC): Maybe five mild swear words. It is mentioned that Pelé has a weakness for women and fathers some children out of wedlock, but sex is never mentioned and only a kiss is shown. There are clear repercussions for his life style, his wife eventually divorces him and the creators don’t paint this in a positive light. A couple illustrations show guys in the locker room in their underwear, and an incident is mentioned when fans stripped Pelé of his clothes; he is drawn naked BUT has his hands/arms strategically placed so it doesn’t show anything. Only violence is some on the field rough play shown and some events in news mentioned but not shown.I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am far from being a sports fan, but I found this graphic novel biography to be very inviting. The panels are boldly and colorfully rendered, and the inclusion of real photography at the end reminds us of the true life at the center of this book.Recommended for sports fans but also for those of us that enjoy a good graphic novel.
You will like this book, especially if you are a sports fan. Pele's skills are so cool! Also, another reason why you should read this book is that it inspires you to have self-confidence, and to follow your dreams.
I have no interest in soccer whatsoever but I do know who Pele is. I usually enjoy biographies about a wide assortment of people no matter their claim to fame as long as the book is about the person, his life, personality, etc. This book didn't succeed in capturing my attention. It started off well enough with young Pele growing up in poverty and showing himself to be an exceptional soccer player. However, once he joined the sport even semi-professionally the book simply became a game by game replay of his life according to soccer. There were sentences and footnotes: oh he got married, oh he cheated on his wife, oh he had a kidney removed. I was totally bored with all the soccer parts which make up 90% of the story. Most recommended for soccer or Pele fans rather than the general biography reader.

About the Author
Robert C. Manske PT, DPT, MPT, MEd, SCS, ATC, CSCS, is a professor in the doctoral physical therapy program at Wichita State University (WSU) in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from WSU with a bachelor of arts degree in physical education in 1991, received a master of physical therapy degree in 1994, and earned a master of education degree in physical education in 2000. He received his DPT from Massachusetts General Institute of Health Professions in 2006. Manske has been an APTA Board Certified Sports Physical Therapist since 2002, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) through the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer. He was a two-term vice president of the APTA Sports Physical Therapy Section. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching at the local, state, and national levels, including the APTA Sports Physical Therapy SectionÂ’s Excellence in Education Award in 2007 and the Ron Peyton Award in 2018. Manske has published multiple books, chapters, articles, and home study courses related to orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, and he has been editor of nine books on various topics related to orthopedics and sports. He is an associate editor for International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy and is currently a manuscript reviewer for Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Sports Health, Athletic Training and Sports Health Care, Physical Therapy in Sports, and American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM). From 2005 through 2007 and 2011 through 2017, he was a principle reviewer for AJSM. Manske has lectured at the state and national levels during meetings for APTA, NATA, and NSCA. In addition to his full-time faculty appointment, he is a physical therapist and athletic trainer at Via Christi Health and also serves as a teaching associate for the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and for the Via Christi Family Practice Sports Medicine Residency Program. B.J. Lehecka, DPT, is an assistant professor in the department of physical therapy in the College of Health Professions at Wichita State University (WSU) in Wichita, Kansas. At WSU, Lehecka teaches course work concerning the hip and spine regions, posture, gait, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, musculoskeletal evaluation, and the treatment of musculoskeletal pathology. In 2016, he was awarded WSUÂ’s Rodenberg Award for Excellence in Teaching due to his outstanding work in the classroom. Lehecka has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles, authored and edited numerous book chapters, and presented at state, national, and international conferences. He earned his bachelorÂ’s degree in kinesiology from Kansas State University in 2006 and a doctorate in physical therapy from Wichita State University in 2009. Lehecka serves his community as a physical therapist and is a PhD candidate at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Michael P. Reiman, PT, DPT, MEd, OCS, SCS, ATC, FAAOMPT, CSCS, is an associate professor in the department of community and family practice at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He is also part of the clinical faculty in the Duke University Medical Center manual therapy fellowship program. Reimann has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as 10 book chapters and three home study courses. He coauthored Functional Testing in Human Performance (Human Kinetics, 2009) with Robert C. Manske. He has given numerous presentations at national, regional, and local conferences. Love the unique hardcover yet spiralbound build of this book. Also really like the skeletal overlay for the images. This book is a great reference for when reviewing mobs and manips. I found it to be a good, thorough text.
Acquired the Kindle Edition with Audio/Video and there no video/audio found on the iPad/iPhone Kindle version, which is contrary to what it is stated above. I quote: "Kindle Edition with Audio/Video: Audio/Video content is available on Fire tablets (except Kindle Fire 1st Generation) and iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices."Felt kind of cheated.
