HERMETIC STUDIES / CELTIC Beneath the orthodox religions of the West runs a current that has preserved both the native lore of our ancestors and the magical knowledge of the Hermetic tradition. The Western esoteric tradition has preserved our vital connection with the Otherworld, keeping alive the ancient earth wisdom of the shamans as well as the gnosis of the classical Mysteries that informed ancient civilizations; this legacy of perennial wisdom enabled the flowering of high magic in the Middle Ages and Renaissance and its lively influence is still part of the West's spiritual inheritance. In Walkers Between the Worlds, Caitlín and John Matthews reveal the development of these complementary traditions in Western culture. As the orthodox structures of the West appear increasingly hollow and irrelevant, the way of the shaman and the magus remains vital, offering many practical methods for reawakening awareness and reconnecting with the sacred continuum of the universe. In addition to its rich appraisal of the Western esoteric tradition and its guidance to both new and continuing practitioners of the native and Hermetic traditions, Walkers Between the Worlds contains twenty-one practical exercises drawn from the teaching methods of both traditions to help the reader explore these Mysteries. CAITLIN and JOHN MATTHEWS have worked within the Western Esoteric Tradition for over twenty-five years, exploring in their many books--including Taliesin: The Last Celtic Shaman, The Encyclopaedia of Celtic Wisdom, and King Arthur and the Goddess of the Land--its shamanic roots, the spiritual lore of the Celts, the myths of the Arthurian legend, and the many practical approaches of contemporary spirituality. They are cofounders of the Foundation for Inspirational and Oracular Studies, established to encourage oral wisdom and the sacred arts, and teach and lecture around the world. They live in Oxford, England.

This is one of the most comprehensive & thorough books I've ever read in the realm of alternative spirituality. It gives an excellent overview of all the main topics in both native/Pagan/earth-centered practice and alchemical/Hermetic/celestial practice. However, it took me almost 2 years to get through the whole book, as it is written very intelligently and requires much reflection to truly digest. Definitely not a Llewellyn-fluff book (although those have their place)! You will need to invest serious thought and time to fully understand & incorporate this book's concepts into your life. For this reason I wouldn't recommend it as one of your first alternative spirituality books; come back to it when you have studied awhile first. It will help answer your questions & fill in the gaps of earlier teachings. My favorite part are the Practices, which are like guided meditations that help bring the sometimes dry text to vibrant life.

For those who have been searching for years for a copy of Caitlin and John Matthews' "The Western Way", omnibus edition, which was the compilation of the two prior western tradition magical works "The Native Tradition" and "The Hermetic Tradition", here is their definitive work revised, rewritten, and updated. The Matthews stand as two of the premier writers and practitioners of Western Tradition magic and native "shamanic" modalities, within a Celtic framework. Along with serious Western Tradition practitioners and writers such as Gareth Knight, who wrote the forward for their original works, and R. J. Stewart, who collaborated with John Matthews on quite a number of books, the Matthews have written an intriguing manual for practitioners, leading you on a journey to the Otherworlds, and leading you back safely. As a shamanic practitioner trained in the Harner method, as well as a Druid with the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids, I can assure you that the practical principles Caitlin and John Matthews instruct in this tome are well worth the time, energy, and effort of those serious about magical and shamanic work. "A rose of the West should not seek to bloom like a lotus of the East", as the pioneers of formalizing Western Tradition have said, referring of course to Dion Fortune, Christine Hartley, William Gray, Gareth Knight, Israel Regardie, and others. This is not to disparage Eastern mysticism at all, only indicates that Eastern mysticism and practice is geared for the Eastern mind. Many people of Western cultures study Eastern practices, unaware that within their own Western cultural heritage there exists a lineage of spiritual and mystical traditions that are every bit as effective and enduring as the Eastern traditions.Drawing from the myths, stories, poetry, ancient writings, and resources, the Matthews provide ample background to substantiate a legacy of Western magical and native traditions left to us by the giants who have gone before us. The Eastern mind and psyche is more attuned to the stillness, the still center, and simply being, while the Western mind and psyche is better engaged in activities and interactions with beings who habitate the many Otherworlds, as well as with our own Higher Self, and with our guardians and guides. These interactions can range from various divination methods, intuition, automatic writing communications, augury, scrying, inspiration, or actual verbal, aural, or thought-exchange interactions with beings. One can access otherworlds and walk therein, at will, with one foot in each world, hence the title of the book.Considering there are organizations of medical doctors and other health care professionals who are now actively studying and practicing shamanism and shamanic techniques, in the USA and elsewhere, what was once a small and eclectic group of indigenous practitioners around the world has blossomed into thousands of people from all walks of life, called to this type of work and exploration, for whatever reasons. This book by the Matthews, whether one is drawn to Celtic shamanism, traditions, or magic, or not, can only help to enrich one's understanding and experience of shamanism and magic. The practical exercises that were the hallmark of the earlier books remain, with enriching and updating as needed, but the structure of the prior works remains intact. I kept my omnibus edition of "The Western Way" even though most of it is incorporated within "Walkers Between the Worlds", for sentimental reasons, because it was the first book I ever read that was such a "synchonious" experience for me, one of the "Ah-ha" moments of my life, that I cannot let it go. It served me well when I was called to assist my late mother in crossing over to the Summerlands, and I took her on a journey to the Underworld so that she wouldn't be afraid of passing over, and she found it beautiful. That was prior to the "Walkers Between The Worlds" edition. All the important material and exercises from "The Western Way" were kept in the Walkers Between The Worlds" book.Gregg Braden, author and speaker, has said that Mayan and other indigenous teachings refer to this time in the world as the time of the "Walkers Between the Worlds", and this has some significance to the year 2012, perhaps as a time of increasing and accelerating Earth vibrations.

This is one of the most valuable spiritual books that I have read in some time. The authors connect two of my primary topics of deep life interest- shamanism and the path of the magus in the Hermetic tradition. I mean, I've always sensed the connection, but I've encountered others that just didn't seem to get it. The authors make this connection- primarily through the classical mystery tradition of the western world. It is identified that the Hermetic tradition cannot exist without the foundation of the native shamanic tradition, while the shamanic tradition cannot progress without the projection of the Hermetic. One represents the roots, and the other the branches, of the Great Tree. It was truly remarkable how page after page tied together my own interests, studies, and intuitions- it was almost like one long experience of high-level synchronicity. Of course, the forward and high praise by Gareth Knight should be enough to convince most knowledgeable readers that this book is the real thing. You could do far worse than to make this book both your introduction, as well as, your primary text for the study of deep, intuitive, Gnostic, spirituality. I know that this book will be going into my permanent reference collection. I don't know how I missed the earlier edition.

Great book

written well, informative, a very popular book among Wiccans. It also has good activities and meditations.I understood traditions and rituals with more depth and reason. Well worth it.

I bought this book twice by mistake, but that's ok...it's still very informative and i used in my spiritual studies.

Great Deal even 'Greaterest' Book

I just loved this book.

"In Ikonomou’s timely novel, the human fallout of the Greek economic recession is writ large. . . . Concerned with the bottom rungs of the social ladder, [these] pieces . . .  cover an astonishing range. . . . These stories add up to a panorama of the human spirit under siege and a searing indictment of the failures to reform the Greek infrastructure." -- Publishers Weekly"[Ikonomou's] characters might feel like they are suffering private tragedies, but SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN repeatedly calls our attention to the subtle human connections that remain. . . . Karen Emmerich deserves special praise for her translation of Ikonomou’s charming, vernacular, and energetic prose." — Bookforum"This collection is a kind of Dubliners for the postcrisis generation and a lament for the marginalized inhabitants of neighborhoods around the shipping district of Piraeus. Ikonomou succeeds at immersing the reader, through a panoramic stream-of-consciousness method of narration, into fifteen lives where “pain and fear come later, when the wound cools[...]” Ikonomou is an author of substance as much as style, and Something Will Happen, You’ll See is a stunning, if somewhat bleak, sketch of a country in flux." — World Literature Today"Ikonomou’s Something Will Happen, You’ll See depicts many lives, of all ages, that have been blighted by financial hardship. The book stands with Rafael Chirbes’s On the Edge as one of the remarkable literary interpretations of the recent global downturn." — Barnes & Noble Review"Stylistically and thematically reminiscent of Raymond Carver. . . Set in contemporary Greece, these stories focus on characters struggling to maintain their dignity, relationships and self-worth in a failing society." — Shelf Awareness "These stories are pitch-perfect, with sullen anger, wit, sharp humor, and tragicomedy captured in sharply crafted scenes that linger in the memory... Karen Emmerich is quickly establishing herself as one of our finest contemporary translators from Greek to English... If someone is interested in understanding the very human face of Greece’s working class, and discovering a very talented and unsettling writer, I’d say buy this book." — Stephanos Papadopoulos in Los Angeles Review of Books "Something Will Happen, You'll See presents a vision that deftly combines economic and existential crisis, showing how the two are never far apart... Ikonomou’s writing brilliantly and sensitively conveys hope, fear, and everything in between. He realizes that the mind plays games when faced with something it can’t bear to see. Ikonomou forces it, and us, to look. These stories give back to the world what is lost in the TV rendition of a country’s suffering. These fictions are the news, writ atomically, or cellularly, character by character, progressing one gesture and emotional tick at a time. The loss of the individuals behind any news story is a crime. Ikonomou undoes the crime by bodying forth the tragedy."— Anne Germanacos in Los Angeles Review of Books  "In sixteen inter-connected short stories, Christos Ikonomou gives us a mural of the lives of people struggling in the working-class neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Athens, the fishing docks and boatyards near the port... Karen Emmerich’s outstanding translation makes sure not only that the lyrical and the rough both survive in the English version, but that the austere and the jumbled, elements which form the Modern Greek language, are both present – this is one of those rare renditions where nothing is lost." — The Times Literary Supplement"This poignant collection of short stories masterfully explores the soul of the Greek people amidst economic crisis. The stories are unique and raw and delve deep into the emotional landscape of unemployment, hunger and despair but include fragments of dark humor and attempts at preserving dignity. From a laid off worker who cannot provide food for his son to a woman whose boyfriend steals her nest egg to a group of sick old men awaiting the opening of a clinic, we are privy to the  innermost thoughts and mundane acts of everyday people who are grappling with difficult circumstances beyond their control.  Ikonomou’s brilliant imagery and insightful writing is simply beautiful to read and ponder." — Wellesley Books newsletter"[Ikonomou's stories] are heart-wrenching and moving yet devoid of any sentimentality. They are deeply illuminating, not only about working-class Greeks in the face of the crisis, but, more importantly, about the human condition." -Publishing Perspectives"A gripping collection of short stories... Christos Ikonomou has already been hailed in the Italian press as a 'Greek Faulkner,' a description that conveys the emotional power but not the restraint or precision of his prose." -Mark Mazower, The Nation"The Greek Faulkner... one of the most touching chronicles of the economic crisis to have come out of Greece." -La Repubblica"Ikonomou redefines the value and the archetypal importance of the Greek epic ... in a few words he depicts the difficulty of living in the here and now." -Panorama“There’s no arrogance in this book. This sensitive chronicler allows the reader to feel his characters’ existential anxiety from the very first line.” –Spiegel Online “The Decameron of the crisis.” –Left Magazine"Ikonomou enters the homes of popular neighborhoods of Piraeus – Nikea, Koridallos, Kokkinia – and gazes people hoping to find a trace, to locate a clue which allows him to dispel the economic tsunami or to appease the protests. It's an intimate eye he has: he sees faces, events and thoughts from behind the glass of a window, hidden by a corner. Sincere and unmerciful." – ANSA News Agency"Christos Ikonomou gives the crisis a face, many faces." - Neue Zürcher Zeitung"In 16 intense, touching snapshots he senses the atmosphere in the country and the pain of each individual." -Zuhause Wohnen"The 43-year-old author of Piraeus writes without frills and laconically about the lives of the so-called little people around him." -Simon Hadler/Alexander Musik"Finally, there’s a book that drags the Greek reader out of the satiate petty bourgeois frame or the lifestyle craze and throws him deep into the working class slums." -Ta Nea Newspaper"Spectacular, bright fiction delivered from an author who has already accomplished much—and promises a lot more." -Kathimerini Newspaper"[Ikonomou] has brought to the surface the struggles and unfulfilled dreams of Piraeus’ working classes, highlighting their beauty and the dignity. One of the most powerful books of the year: a novel that’s been widely read and admired." -Eleftherotypia Newspaper"Ikonomou’s gaze never becomes melodramatic or pitiful; nor does it fall into the ease of depicting the extreme. There are absolutely no clichés and the usual stereotypes that accompany the depiction of the poor in literature… with this short-story collection (Ikonomou) rewrites the almost forgotten urban social realism into the fabric of Greece’s contemporary literature…(the author) enters contemporary Greek literature very dynamically." -Nea Hestia Literary Magazine "[Ikonomou’s] dialogue sparkles with authenticity whereas his narrative bridges a simple and often rough language with moments of pure lyricism giving out a spark that fuels emotion." -Conteiner Magazine

Sorry to say that I fond this to be relentlessly negative and half way through I just got sick of the delight the author seems to take rolling about in this. Also it's real by-the-numbers negativity so there's no surprises or insight. And it's all over the place now. We know this stuff. In my case, the thing that happened was the book being thrown across the room. I hated it.

Good Lord, this is one depressing book. Page after page, story after story of the most awful things people have to bear. It is dark and heavy, with most characters living lives that are hopeless, chaotic, and unstable.I echo the other reviewers who have praised author Ikonomou for so powerfully capturing the poverty, despair, and destitution people are experiencing in Greece's garbage economy. But what struck me most about this book is how negatively women are portrayed--always helpless, sad, borderline crazy. They are abandoned and oblivious and, even though they are the ones keeping their families together, they still somehow come off as weak. They are raped and whored out A LOT. Even in the stories where they are the main (and sometimes the only) characters, they always play second fiddle to the men. Is this a cultural thing? Is this simply an accurate portrayal of how women are treated in Greece? And is Ikonomou okay with it? Or is he trying to make a point against it? I'm not sure. But, yikes, it's bleak.Reading this book was depressing and eye-opening. If you read all the stories in one sitting, like I did, prepare to be overwhelmed with the sadness of it all. I wish I had chosen to digest them bit by bit. Instead, I zipped through it...and then had to have a good cry afterward. The book is powerful, but, wow, it's a lot to absorb.

The writing of these stories is terrific. The book is truly "literature". It picks you up sweeps you along. Kudos to the translator. It is impossible to tell this was not written in English. All the stories are about down and out Greeks suffering in the horrible economic times. Most have been knocked down by the depression, others by circumstance. Either way, there are no winners in this book. There is also no hope, no light, no resolute human heart. The stories are of the down and out with no sugar coating. There is particularly "Greek" about the characters. Except for the settings (and the liquor drunk) these stories could be of monetarily and psychologically depressed people anywhere. The writing is definitely superb. The dark nature of all the stories is fitting. I have two criticisms of the book. It is difficult to sit and read it all at once. The pacing is all the same and the stories all have the same theme. Sit and read one story and you will sit back and marvel at the talent and the feelings elicited. Read more than a few at a time and they the stories get repetitious and run-on. It's like a very rich and sweet treat. A little at a time is nirvana. Too much at once results in stomach upset.

If there is any doubt in the reader's mind that the author isn't addressing this very issue[Banker Occupied Territory] - just read a few of these heart wrenching stories. Stories realistically portraying good people enduring unimaginable suffering, so that the few cannot only have more than their share, but indeed, have it all!The first chapter/Come on Ellie, Feed the Pig, where the author is referring to an acronym PIGS: Portugal, Italy Greece Spain. All targets of financial capital whose endgame is to break public services worldwide by financializing them to bankruptcy, and at the point of failure to replace them entirely with privately-owned profit-making services. If the poor people do things like that to other poor people[steal their last dollars] what on earth are the rich people supposed to do to us, asked Ellie; little realizing the reason she is so destitute and enduring so much suffering, is precisely because the rich are stealing from her and populations worldwide - without remorse. Therein is the irony we see as the characters are being stripped of their remaining humanity by an inhuman class of ruling elites.Another character, Niki, in another chapter says/You have to stay strong, Something will happen, you'll see. Banks don't just take people's homes away. This isn't America. We'll manage somehow. You'll see. [Later in the chapter] Compromise. All of life is one big compromise. We're all born of compromise Niki thinks, out of that great silent yes that our parents say when they choose to bring us into this world. Which means we all carry a kind of compromise inside us, in our blood. That's why all revolutions are destined to fall.Another character, in yet another chapter/They sold us down the river, the others said. Don't you get it you fool? Our co-workers. Our comrades-in-arms. They sold us out.Still another chapter, another character/That's what real democracy is. When poor people don't wait for the rich to come and save them but take back the situation into their own hands. Because that's how the trouble starts: with us thinking that the rich will ever help the poor. It just doesn't happen. We live in two separate worlds. They're over there and we're over here. We have to take the situation in our own hands. What do you think our greatest enemy is? Death? Money? Not at all. It's fear. That's our worst enemy. Fear. Fear. The author is well-grounded in the territory he brings the reader to/Five men had lit a fire outside the Social Security offices in Nikaia in the middle of the January night. They were retirees, former office workers or manual labor, unshaven and down at the heels. They had started gathering at three in the morning so they'd be the first to see the doctors before the crowds came and the line stretched all the way to the sidewalk. They didn'y know one another and didn't bother to introduce themselves - they had other things on their minds. Besides, their names didn't matter. What mattered was the order, that the order of the line be strictly maintained. Which is why each man thought of himself and the others as numbers on a list that would keep growing as the night advanced. So reader, come stand in line with those in banker occupied territories, and live awhile with various good people who find themselves inside a landscape of betrayal; and be prepared to join them, as the banking territories come expanding into your neck of the woods. For, as the old saying goes... And Then They Come For You.

I wish this guidebook had been published when I visited Montevideo 16 years ago. Though I had a good time, I see now it could have been 10-times more fun. But I’m enjoying thinking about my next trip from my swivel chair at home because the book is so lively and personable, reading it is like making a new friend. I mean, this is the only guidebook you’ll find that uses rating categories of “Thumbs up!” “Mehhh” and “Mehhh antidote.” The author, Karen, defines what it means to be the hostess-with-the-mostess. The Live Music chapter includes lists of lesser-known artists who will “blow you away,” the popular and the off-the-beaten-track venues where they play, how to post a request for a reservation via FB, and exactly what to write in Spanish! She even tells you what albums to listen to before you arrive. Though a self-proclaimed “beer woman,” Karen still goes out of her way to appeal to wine-lovers like me, consulting real experts to list the best restaurants for wine lovers, 12 best budget wines, vineyard tours from “rustic” to “luxury”, and “great little wine stores.” The guidebook has advice about everything you would expect to see, from tips on getting to and from, weather and what to wear, where to stay, what to tip—it’s all in here, along with a good dose of humor and enticement to buy your tickets to Uruguay straight-away.

The Guru'Guay guide MADE my trip to Montevideo. I was there for 5 weeks so I had a lot of time to try many of the recommendations in the book. The explanation of how to use the bus route website was invaluable. So was the insight into proper amounts to tip. I'm from the U.S. and would recommend this book strongly. Thanks Guru'Guay for the great background on the area, the spot-on restaurant reviews and the great advice for side trips. :}~

Informational: Yes! Not what I would describe as a true guide. Author provides personal opinions based on her experiences and makes several recommendations (sounded more like sale-pitches to colleagues) without comparative points of reference. For someone who is ignorant of the culture it may be more useful than to experienced travelers. All in all she reveals things about the area that will be helpful to anyone who does not know what to expect and for that reason it will be valuable to many. For whatever is worth I bought two (one to gift), in hindsight I should have bought one and after glancing at it for a couple of hours, I would give it to someone planning on travelling there. I'll get my money's worth just to try a couple of the author's favorite places, but it will not be the rental car place she recommends - absurd pricing for car rental regardless of what they do before, or after the car rental.

When I was planning my November 2017 trip to Uruguay, I was really struggling to find any type of helpful travel information. Again and again, I kept finding the Guru'guay blog, which has fabulous articles and recommends. Through the blog, I found this book and also wound up staying at Karen's fabulous Casa Sarandi in Montevideo. This book was a treasure trove of great information and was invaluable - not only to better understand all of the wonderful things I could do, but also to get a better sense of the Uruguayan culture. This book is a gotta-have if you are heading there - and don't miss her Beaches and Wine Country book as well!

Uruguay is a good place to spend several days, especially if you are also planning a trip to Brazil or Argentina. And this Guru'Guay Guide is a must and really helps you plan your stay. We used Karen Higgs' recommendation for our hotel, the Alma Historica, and for a city guide and Carnival guide. It is an easy read, and you can also download a copy and use it on Kindle.Well worth the price

It's hard to find info on Montevideo and this has it all. She got us to and from places and helped exprience the everyday culture! Thanks to the author and her website we got tickets for the ferry between Montevideo and Argentina for half the price we were finding through Boquebus on their other brand Seacat. Same company and equip. Different brands.

While I haven't visited Uruguay, I plan to retire to Montevideo in a few years. I'm doing all the research I can, and Karen's book is a winner. I'm interested in neighborhoods, food, and cultural activities and I learned so much, without a lot of the tourism "come ons" that are on the travel sites. She has lived there many years and her love of the city (and country) is very apparent, and she knows her stuff. If you follow Guru'Guay on Facebook, you know that she has a passion for what she does, and that comes through in her book. Very highly recommended, and I can't wait to get there.

Luckily I found this guide just before my husband and I left on a two-week plus trip to Uruguay a month ago. The information provided by the guru was invaluable as it dovetailed with our desire to sample historic cafes, travel by bus around Montevideo and further into the country. The author's website, guruguay.com, featured an article on an estancia, which we arranged to visit and enjoyed immensely. Besides the great practical advice, we indulged in some of her recommendations, which were spot on. Looking forward to her next guidebook.

This will be my fourth trip to Europe in as many years nearly exclusively using a Rick Steves book for guidance. Rick Steves books are excellent for the traveler going to a place for the first time, who needs some real advice, that is, a well informed opinion, as to where to go and what to see. Rick Steves is knowledgeable, experienced, well-informed, intelligent and has excellent judgement. No guidebook is all things to all people. Lonely Planet guides are crammed with more information and are more comprehensive, but are in my opinion intimidating and boring for a first timer - they simply have too much information which a first-timer is ill-equipped to wade through and evaluate. I get information overload from them. If you are travelling someplace for the first time and need a guidebook to help form an itinerary, go with Rick Steves.

The title is misleading. The book ignores significant regions of Spain and instead includes Morocco. For example, if you are are planning to visit Valencia or other cities in the east coast of Spain you will not find any information at all.

This is a fantastic guidebook for travel nerds. I say that because to use the guidebook properly, you must read it ahead of time and annotate it as needed. I read much of it before I left, marking pages with notes, stickers, flags and post-its. I used binder clips to separate chapters of places I had no time to visit. I must admit that I walked around Spain with my finger holding a section of the book open much of the time, referring to one of Rick's tours or finding a restaurant in our area. This book accompanied us through Barcelona, Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Madrid. My daughters kept it for their upcoming trips to Toledo, Segovia, El Escorial and more. Having Rick's restaurant advice was a great way to have a good overall experience. I think he favors restaurants that cater to travelers and treat them patiently; the food ranges from excellent to pretty good. While you can also use trip advisor or another site for restaurants, I prefer to find his tried and true favorites. This reference book has no downsides in my opinion. If you don't like the weight of it, do as he says and take the sections you need out of the book. We did that with the Madrid section and amazingly, it stayed together like a mini-book. Obviously you lose the more rigid cover that way, but it's a great way to lighten your load.

Took parts of this book in our trip to Spain and found it useful and factual. The detailed street maps were accurate and it is a good size to put in your bag.It was a little hard to pull apart the sections by city but once separated, they held together well.

We're considering a trip to Spain. So naturally we ordered the latest version of Rick Steve's Spain as a planning and touring guide. His travel books are packed with overview, detail and planning information. In the past we've used his guides for other European destinations with great results. As he suggested we rip them apart and take along the parts that are relevant to our trip. In Italy we connected with one of his suggested tour guides and had a fantastic tour in Venice. And we followed his advice on using private tours rather than the mass people movement of crowed tour buses from cruise ships. It makes all the difference in the world!!We also recommend looking into his destination DVDs as a preview for your trip. They also make great memories for places that have been visited. The Rick Steve's web site also has downloadable audio guides for a great many destinations. Another plus for travel planning and touring.

Very happy with the book. After walking the entire 491 mile Camino Frances, I spent 4 days in Madrid prior to returning to the States. The hotel and tourist site recommendations for Madrid were spot on. Also did a very good job with the public transportation section. This was my third trip to Spain, and I'm a Spanish speaker. At least as to the Madrid section, the information was much more detailed than most guidebooks . Greatly appreciated the section on what art work to look for in the Prado.

This book is a useful guide to travel in Spain, especially about logistics, modes of transportation, and how to see different areas. I found it useful for Madrid and Barcelona, and the way to optimize my time in both big cities. The walking tours of Barcelona are really good. There wasn't as much detail as I'd like in the less-traveled areas. For example, the Fiesta of San Fermin and the Running of the Bulls wasn't nearly as detailed, nor as accurate (as experienced by yours truly). Also, the recommendations for meals could use a bit of adjustment - I found much better options by talking to locals and especially hotel concierges in nearly every city. But overall, as Steves recommends, tear out the sections you need and bring them with you as a general guide to get you going. Bravo!

This book provides specific information on the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage trail I'll be exploring later this year. All my fellow pilgrims have also ordered this book. It's been very helpful in our planning. It also has great information on Spain in general which we'll also be visiting. I wish I had discovered this guide before buying several other travel guides. Rick Steves is truly an expert.

Review

"A valuable contribution to our understanding of the Cold War and those who became victims of the national security state. It highlights well, and in a very readable form, the origins and continuity of the gay rights movement which are located in the fight against the federal government''s anti-gay policies."—H-Net Reviews in the Humanities and Social Sciences --(H-Net Reviews in the Humanities and Social Sciences ) "Dr. Johnson has provided today''s generation with disturbing details of the maltreatment that U.S. security agents visited upon thousnads of loyal American citizens, people who endured vile campaigns against their well-being, conducted by their own government. The Lavender Scare has great current significance as a work of history because it exposes the anti-gay fear-mongering that Republicans initiated during the Cold War Era....a stellar work, one of the most important published gay histories there is."—Gay Today (Raj Ayyar Gay Today )"A gripping study of sanctioned homophobia in the McCarthy era and a celebration of the stubborn fight by a pre-Stonewall few that ultimately won rights for many, and of a cultural and sexual underground that survived even at the height of an unrelenting homophobia spanning the presidencies of Truman through Nixon."-—Richard Labonte, Book Marks "David Johnson''s engrossing study of the persecution of gays and lesbians during the Cold War, complete with a comprehensive picture of the gay culture that flourished in Washington, is an important addition to a subject all too often ignored."-—Dallas Morning News "The hoary rhetoric about the supposedly treasonous/treacherous nature of homosexuality that the historian David K. Johnson documents in his fine new book can initially strike a reader as amusing. The homophobic fulmination of varoius McCarthy-era senators and representatives he quotes are fatuous, if not ludicrous. But as The Lavender Scare goes on to reveal, the jaw-dropping extent of the federal government''s persecution of its gay and lesbian employees in the ''50s and ''60s turns amusement into rage."—Kevin Riordan, Washington Blade  "By demonstrating the extent to which gay history is part of mainstream history, [Johnson] continues the important academic endeavor of bringing the margins to the center."-—Fiona Paton, American Quarterly "The Lavender Scare provides a superb overview of this period in American history. . . . It''s a must-read for gay and lesbian federal employees, and would serve as an excellent text for college or graduate-level courses in history, sociology, political science, or gay studies."—Lawrence Reynods, Gay & Lesbian Review "Keenly observed and elegantly written, with a sense of mystery and suspense indicative of the era, Johnson''s book will reorient scholarship on the Cold War as it models a more complex method for integrating queer community history with economic and political history."—John Howard, GLQ "The Lavender Scare is a very readable and valuable work that clarifies the relationship between the Cold War and national security interests, and those victimized by the need to preserve said security. . . . This work will take its place beside those of George Chauncey and Allen Berube, and every serious student of 20th century American history should own it."—Aaron L. Bachhofer, Archives of Sexuality "What does it say about the historical profession that it has taken nearly 30 more years to tell this story? Fortunately, David K. Johnson has done so with intelligence, sensitivity, and grace. We are all in his debt."—Ellen Schrecker, American Communist History "Johnson''s work assures that we shall never again be able to think about the anticommunist crusade without acknowledging its fierce counterpart that affected the lives of so many people."—Leila J. Rupp, Journal of American History“Fifty years ago, gays ‘confronted a degree of policing and harassment that is almost unimaginable to us today’ and which now is almost entirely forgotten. David K. Johnson’s The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government is a heart-wrenching reminder that homosexuals faced brutal employment discrimination and endless police hostility.”—David J. Garrow, Los Angeles Times"A riveting history of gay-baiting in the McCarthy era"—In These Times (In These Times ) "Johnson''s dazzling social and political history puts the Cold War persecution of gays and lesbians center stage to highlight how the social and cultural anxieties around gender and sexuality dovetailed with the nation''s state-building project in the post-World War II era."—Steve Valocchi, American Journal of Sociology  "An important book, one that promises to reorient the historical scholarship on the Cold War." ---Robert J. Corber American Historical Review“By utilizing an impressive array of primary sources and integrating political, social, and cultural history, historian David Johnson provides us with a much needed, in-depth analysis. . . . A valuable contribution to our understanding of the Cold War and those who became victims of the national security state. It corrects certain misconceptions about the targets of McCarthyism to reveal that homosexuals were a unique focus in a parallel witch hunt to those who did not conform to 1950s society and beyond."--Douglas M. Charles, H-Net Reviews “An important work of gay scholarship that proves, once and for all, that the Lavender Scare was not a minor adjunct of the Red Scare, but a major government campaign in its own right. . . . The Lavender Scare is more than a great work of history. It is a cautionary tale.”—Jesse Monteagudo, The Weekly News

From the Inside Flap

The McCarthy era is generally considered the worst period of political repression in recent American history. But while the famous question, "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" resonated in the halls of Congress, security officials were posing another question at least as frequently, if more discreetly: "Information has come to the attention of the Civil Service Commission that you are a homosexual. What comment do you care to make?"Historian David K. Johnson here relates the frightening, untold story of how, during the Cold War, homosexuals were considered as dangerous a threat to national security as Communists. Charges that the Roosevelt and Truman administrations were havens for homosexuals proved a potent political weapon, sparking a "Lavender Scare" more vehement and long-lasting than McCarthy's Red Scare. Relying on newly declassified documents, years of research in the records of the National Archives and the FBI, and interviews with former civil servants, Johnson recreates the vibrant gay subculture that flourished in New Deal-era Washington and takes us inside the security interrogation rooms where thousands of Americans were questioned about their sex lives. The homosexual purges ended promising careers, ruined lives, and pushed many to suicide. But, as Johnson also shows, the purges brought victims together to protest their treatment, helping launch a new civil rights struggle. The Lavender Scare shatters the myth that homosexuality has only recently become a national political issue, changing the way we think about both the McCarthy era and the origins of the gay rights movement. And perhaps just as importantly, this book is a cautionary tale, reminding us of how acts taken by the government in the name of "national security" during the Cold War resulted in the infringement of the civil liberties of thousands of Americans.

I've always been fascinated by the McCarthy era. It always seemed to me that the nation teetered on the brink of totalitarianism for several years during the 1950s. Fortunately, the nation managed to pull itself back from the brink. In The Lavender Scare author David K. Johnson sheds light into the dark corner or the McCarthy era and uncovers a time when the federal government targeted gay and lesbian employees for prosecution and firing because it was believed that simply being gay made then more vulnerable to blackmail by foreign agents. (It doesn't seem to have occurred to the government that a straight married man involved in an affair stood the same risk of blackmail.)Wisconsin Sen. Joe McCarthy often gets credit for starting the "lavender scare" along with the witch hunts seeking to oust current and former Communists from the government. However, as Johnson points out, McCarthy actually had little to do directly with the anti-homosexual purges. But in the mind of the public in the 1950s McCarthy was forever linked with the lavender scare because the public did not see the distinction between the issues of disloyalty posed by Communists and the potential security risks posed by gays and lesbians. The anti-gay purges began in the State Department but soon spread to all federal offices as well as private companies that held government contracts. While Washington, D.C. had a reputation for tolerance before World War II, the post-war years saw that tolerance reversed. Vice officers busted hapless men for as little as making eye contact in bars, in parks and on the street. Law enforcement agencies were only too happy to share their arrest reports with government officials. Gays and lesbians were arrested at private dinner parties and interrogated to identify their friends. When a gay employee was identified, Civil Service investigators were called in for coercive interogations.During the darkest days of the lavender scare many gays and lesbians simply "disappeared." Some moved back to their home towns in the hope their shame wouldn't follow them. Some had to take menial jobs because the careers they had prepared for were forever barred to them. Some chose to end their own lives. And some found a new calling. Among them were Harry Hay, founder of the Mattachine Society in California and Frank Kameny who founded the Mattachine Society of Washington.Kameny especially comes across as a hero. Once an astronomer who was working under a government contract, when rumors of his homosexuality began to spread he was called Washington and fired. He began a court fight that ultimately proved futile, but along they way he gained the courage to come out as a gay man and speak publicly about the devastation of the government's anti-gay purges.I've encountered references to the anti-gay purges in various histories of the time that I read. Lavender Scare is the first book I've ever read to deal specifically with the subject. It seems well researched and a work of solid scholarship in addition to being a very readable book.

I am reviewing this book based on the Kindle version. The only problem i have with the Kindle version is that the footnotes, which in a book like this are very important, are not directly accessible as with other Kindle books. I can see the footnote number, but cannot click on the number to get to the actual note. I hope the producers of this book will correct this problem. As for the content, this well written book was an eye opener for me. The author lays out the events in a manner that makes clear how the homosexual panic took hold as a tool for the Republicans wanting to oust a Democratic president and cast aspersions on the New Deal. It also reveals how some in the press used it as a means to improve their circulation by playing on the public's fear of the gay/lesbian "other". When i was taught about the McCarthy era there was NO information provided about the attack on the gay/lesbian community. This book is the only one to bring this dark period of hysteria into the cold light of day where i hope we will learn some important lessons. This book and Making Gay History are the two books i recommend to friends who want to learn about LGBT history. The two books are complements in that The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.(Book review): An article from: The Historian covers in detail one period of LGBT history that has been all but lost, yet, it was important in driving the events presented in Making Gay History far more than the Stonewall incident. Both make great gifts and recently my book club decided to make The Lavender Scare our monthly read.I gave this only four stars because the Kindle footnotes are not live. Given the importance of the footnotes, live notes are important because they provide easy access to the footnotes in a way that is conducive to maintaining reading flow. Without the live footnotes i've been forced to use a second kindle to maintain access to the foot notes. Should the authors release a version with live footnotes i will change my review to 5 stars.

I remember growing up and reading in the newspaper of McCarthyism in full swing. The US government, especially the State Department, was exceptionally hostile to gays. There were witch hunts. Being gay was equalled with being communist, and this was during the Cold War. People lost their jobs, guys killed themselves when outed, these were terrible un-accepting times for gays. It's hard to comprehend how much things have changed for the better. Fascinating history, well-written.

I got my degree in history, and yet somehow I managed to make it until my senior year before I even discovered that this event happened. The Red Scare is a well-known period, but this book illuminated another side of it that is severely overlooked in most courses, lectures, books and documentaries. I would have to rate the book highly just for bringing it to light, but the fact that it's well-written is a nice bonus, too.

Detailed accounting backed by first hand accounts, newspaper articles of the day, the Congressional Record including previously unavailable access to the reports of the Hovey Commission of the horrors of the dark ages for gay people in the U.S.A. A must read for any one who wants to know the depths of depravity that the government is capable of descending in persecution of minorities ... sexual, gender and racial.

This book relays the hidden history of persecution against American citizens for their personal lives. Most don’t realize how systematic and pervasive this was.

This not only speaks about what happened during this time and hell that was the lives of many GLBT, but it also explains how this became a Cold War witch hunt. Loyal American citizens were stripped of everything even on the suspicion of being gay. Excellent source for writing a paper with lots of primary source interviews you can't find elsewhere.
