Review

“Elegant and erudite….The most resonant parts of [Menzies-Pike's] narrative deal with her own personal loss, and how tightly it becomes interwoven with her experiences as a runner….Gorgeously written and extremely moving.” —The Atlantic"Satisfies in every way." —Oprah.com“Menzies-Pike’s engaging book braids together feminist and literary theory, cultural criticism, history, and a moving personal narrative…Important and fascinating.” —Publishers Weekly"You don’t have to be a runner to appreciate The Long Run....Engrossing." —Bustle"Honest, funny, and moving." —Kirkus Reviews“This engaging memoir navigates the complexities, misconceptions, and the oppression of female runners in film, literature, and art throughout history. I was looking forward to this book because I love to read books about running, especially memoirs! And this author is articulate and educated, and has a definite feminist point of view. She included a lot of running history I hadn't heard before, as well as some I did know, and I really enjoyed reading about the different historical perceptions of women as runners. She is from Australia, so I enjoyed hearing a less US-centric point of view!

Enjoyable fast reading book!

Beautiful, beautiful memoir and history of women's running.

I'm conflicted about this book. It's a well written book, it just isn't the book that I thought I was getting or that I particularly wanted to read. I anticipated a book about running through grief as the author trained for a marathon, and we got that. But there was also a lot-maybe too much?-on the history of running, women's running, running in antiquity, possible mythical running achievements, many of which could have been their own books. As a result, I felt that when she finally got to running Gold Coast and then NYC, it was short changed in favor Atalanta, way too much Pheidippides., the myth of the marathon and some details on the history of the marathon. In some ways, this isn't surprising, she's a voracious reader and did her PhD in literature. I just wished for a more focused look at one of these topics vs. trying to do them all. That said, I see a lot of myself in her. An atypical runner who decided to run and progressed while struggling as many of us do. The book begins with her running a She Runs The Night race in Sydney which allowed her to start off mid running journey and explore women's safety issues, but then further examine the role of women in sport. She took an interesting tack toward the end when she explored the question of whether the knocks against slower runners were really knocks against women runners. She's really against the patriarchy in running and while I don't disagree with her, it's not an issue I feel as strongly about.Overall, a good read. I just wished there was more on the deferred marathons as well as the ones she finally ran.

I'm rereading this right now, and reminded of how this is not just a book about running. It's a book about women running in history, and the author's attempts to trace the (usually poorly recorded) roots of that, and, perhaps more than anything else, it's a book about grief. But somehow, at the same time, it's about running for the joy of it -- and not running to crush records and achieve better splits or even to become an amazing athlete. It's about the freedom that running provides -- not just freedom from things (like freedom from a life stuck in a rut), but freedom for things. Freedom for processing grief. Freedom for thinking. Freedom for writing. Menzies-Pike has a degree in modernist literature, and it shows. My favorite writing about running always links the two processes -- the process of running and the process of writing. Both activities too often result simply in a product that we see: a book, or a minute per mile time. Menzies-Pike skillfully draws out the hard-won joy of running, and she writes about it eloquently. This is a book for every kind of runner, and for those who don't run at all. It's about what goes on in your mind, heart, and spirit when you run, and it's about communing, through running, with the little-known women who came before you. All this could become melodramatic and overblown in the hands of a less-skilled writer, but Menzies-Pike pulls it off naturally and (seemingly) effortlessly.

First, I should probably tell you that I am not a runner. I know a few people who run, who run half-marathons, who want to run full marathons, but that's never, ever been me. So when I won an advanced reader copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway, I wasn't sure what to expect. Would this be a blow by blow book on how to train to run a long race? Would it be a sad tale of the grief the author dealt with after her parents died unexpectedly? Would it be the story about how she pulled herself up by her bootstraps and faced the world while running, hoping it would provide distraction from her grief? Well, it's a little bit of all of these, and a whole lot more. This book is remarkably well written and entertaining. The author doesn't take herself too seriously. The book does spend some time discussing the loss of her parents and how she felt lost herself following their untimely deaths when she was at university. She discusses how she plowed on with her education and traveled in an attempt to come to terms with the premature death of her mother and father. To a lesser degree, she touches on the connections she had with her sisters, aunts, grandparents, cousins, and friends. (To be honest, I would have like to see a little more about how she interacted with her family following her loss. She never goes into much detail about where her sisters wound up, or why there was a problem with her parents' estate. There are just brief mentions about these things, but I don't think the real focus of this book is on the author's losses. It's more about how she eventually found a way out of that darkness and the part that running played in her move back into the light.) But all of that only forms the skeleton on which this book is built. On those bones, the author layers an interesting selection of information revolving around the culture and history of women runners. She discusses why women were discouraged from running for so long, on the commitment that running requires, on art in relation to running, on running clothing and how it's evolved over the years. As the author herself says, she only scratches the surface of this history and the women who paved the way for today's women's long distance runners.Despite the fact that I received an uncorrected proof of this book, the writing is impeccable. I'm a fussy reader, and I didn't notice a single typographical, contextual, or spelling error. Not overly surprising when the author holds a PhD in literature, I guess. It's one of the best ARCs I've received from any source. One of my favorite lines form this book, and there are many:Running has a way of dragging you into the present moment of exertion. While I didn't know what I was going to get in this book, I wasn't at all disappointed at what I found when I started reading. It includes a lot of interesting and, to me, obscure history and cultural background concerning women runners. She offered just enough detail to hone my interest, but not enough to bore me. She's spurred me on to want to do more research on some of the things people and things she brought up. It's also not an overly long book. My copy has 232 actual textual pages. I suppose if I had more interest in running, I'd have zipped through this book in an evening or two.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever exerted themselves in any physical way, as a child, as a teenager, as an adult. It doesn't require running to understand how the author used the physical movement of her runs to help overcome her grief. And while you read, it's likely that you'll learn something about how women were restricted, for no provable reason, from fully participating in the sport until the latter half of the twentieth century.I'll be passing my copy of this book onto a young relative who enjoys running. I think it will be appreciated.

Being broken from the loss of Hadassah, Marcus journeys to Galilee to try to find some answers about her. She had told him that she heard God’s voice in the wind, but try as he might, he can’t. With a set of unexpected events, however, Marcus begins to understand, but he’s not sure he’ll ever understand why Hadassah was taken from him when he loved her so or be able to forgive his sister for her life choices or killing his dream. But things are not always as they seem, and God still works miracles in the lives of his children. The cover of this one looks exactly like I pictured Marcus. (The cover that is appearing for my review is not the one on the book or audio I had.) Again, I found the research impressive, and the story riveting. The head-hopping continued, and I noticed a few mispronounced words. “Julius,” the male slave, also sounded too much like “Julia,” Marcus’s sister, most of the time. I loved how this one ended, but the last part, where it just told about what happened to the family, should have been worked into story form and not just recounted.

This is the second book in a series and with the teaser at the end of the first book, you can't help but want to read the second. The main characters from the first book are still there (those that survived) and the addition of new characters only serves to give you more characters to care about.Francine Rivers does not follow all the rules of Christian fiction... and in not doing so, her work is fascinating, makes you think about what kind of person you are or could be, and gives you hope. You'll want to forego sleep reading this one.

My pastor loaned the 1st book in this trilogy to me, and after about 20 pages of it, I ordered the remaining 2 books from Amazon. I've never read anything so in depth with how I imagine events actually took place in that era, as well as the emotional upheaval that these characters experienced. I could find nothing wrong with the historical flow either. I can hardly wait to read the last one.

I often buy books for my wife, who is an avid reader. This book came well recommended by other reviewers so I bought the series. After reading the book, my wife insisted that I read it also. While it is my opinion that these books are written for women, I was surprised at how good of a read it was. I have never been a big fan of Christian fiction, mostly because the characters never seemed real to me. Even the sinners in the books had high moral standards that didn't fit the character. As an example, the pilot and the flight attendant in the first Left Behind book had been involved for months, but had never been intimate. It didn't seem real in the book or the movie. Ms Rivers paints characters with real human feelings, desires, weaknesses as well as strengths. The sinners engage in sinful acts, but without the lurid details of common fiction. There is action, violence and blood in the book that paints the people of Rome as history has shown them to be.

I really liked all three books of the series, but this was my favorite. An amazing story, well told, without the at times difficult to take brutal violence of the first book. Loved the characters and how things unfolded - just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. I will look forward to reading it again. Her books do such a great job of conveying the power of the Christian way.

It is a rare find when a sequel is as good as the original, but Francine Rivers has succeeded admirably with her second installment of this trilogy in AN ECHO IN THE DARK. After reading the first one, I knew I had to read on, but never expected this book to be as good. I don't read a lot of fiction, but have a strong feeling there will be many books by this superb writer in my future.God gives us each unique gifts in life, and he gave Francine Rivers the blessed gift of writing. She has recognized her gift and deftly uses it to glorify Christ by witnessing through her stories. I do not believe it is possible to read either of these first books of this trilogy without them strengthening ones faith, or perhaps even altering your life altogether. That's how profound these books truly are.I don't want to give away too much of the story, but readers here will most likely have already the first installment, so I will say that Rivers will make your heart ache for Hadassah's identity to be revealed, only to keep your incessantly turning page after page, mired in anguish and crying out for her precious soul to be rewarded. Throughout this book, as in the first, your emotions will run high as you smile, you cry, you rejoice in the glory of God as others accept His salvation.I anxiously await the third and final installment in this trilogy, as well as exploring other works by this author. God has blessed Francine Rivers with a wonderful gift. I urge everyone to partake in that gift.Pastor Monty Rainey

Holding to your belief when you know the outcome is not favorable for you. Many Christians faced death in the arenaif they did not denounce God. One story is about a young woman whose father preached and was killed by his own for their lack of belief. Her mom and sister later died of starvation, her brother was murdered by Roman soldiers and she was sold into slavery. She was a living witness of her life but if she verbally acknowledged herself as a Christian she could be sent to the arena. Finally, the young girl she attended was jealous of the relationship her brother had with the servant and had her sent to the arena where she separated herself from the crowd, was devoured by the lions yet she survived and became a greater witness or its the story of a young woman whose baby died young and a Roman a young Roman mother whose rejection of her child was a blessing for the grieving mother. The father who previously rejected thebaby too now wants claim. Its about the journey she takes as the child's mom with the father as they all become Christians.

Across African Sand: Journeys of a Witch-Doctor's Son-in-Law

From Library Journal

The author, an American-born teacher whose career has been primarily overseas, gives a lively recounting of nearly five years in southern Africa, in the village of Mapoka, Botswana. His stories provide an outsider's view of traditional African society and culture. A dangerous bicycle ride across the Kalahari and Namib deserts provides the framework for telling the story: as he bikes across 3000 miles of sand, dodging lions and elephants, Deutschle describes his life in Botswana through flashbacks. This method makes the book somewhat confusing and difficult to follow. Focusing more on life in Mapoka and less on the desert trip might have been better. Nonetheless this is recommended for public libraries with collections on travel and African culture.-Mark L. Grover, Brigham Young Univ. The author provides an unusual view into Africa. He is a teacher and a bicyclist, in that order. I enjoyed what he had to show me about the inner workings of two cultures intersecting (Western and African), and learning with him as he grew during his stay. This is not the most enthralling of books, with a few sections that were a bit tedious, but is still a moderately recommended read. When you're tired of frothy page-turners, if you feel like a personal history, or reading about teaching kids in Africa, or a personal bicycle tale the book will satisfy. Slower-paced, well enough told.

Across African Sand is a an excellent example of what true adventure books should be. I emphasize the word "true" not simply to point out that events in the book are factual but to distinguish this work from books describing stunts. (To me a stunt is a once-in-a-lifetime event, filled with harum-scarum that a more skilled traveler would have avoided and usually detailing a significant departure from the main stream of the writer's life.) By contrast, Across African Sand comes across as the logical continuation of Phil Deutschle's career as a teacher and introspective traveler. Prior to embarking on his solo bicycle ride across the Kalahari and Namib deserts, Deutschle has spent three years living and teaching in an out-of-the way village in Botswana. An accomplished linguist, he has become fluent-to-conversant with several local languages, including that of the !Kung (Bushman) people, and thus we learn more of African life and thought than we would at the mercy of a more casual traveler. Deutschle clearly enjoys the company of the various people he falls in with along the way but also relishes the solitude which is such a significant part of his journey. Part of the success of the book is its skillful interweaving of events in the course of his cycling trek with flashbacks to his life as a teacher in a traditional Botswana village. Dimi Press has done a creditable job of putting the book together and its illustrations are great. I wholeheartedly recommend this as an interesting and insightful story of travel and adventure.

I bought this book for my husband. While he was reading it he kept interrupting my reading to tell me about what was happening in his book. In self defense, I picked it up as soon as he finished and immediately found myself transported to Africa. This book is much more than the story of the author's trip across the Kalahri on a bicycle. He writes about the people he meets and tells of their culture, the politics and economy of each group. He possesses interpersonal skills that allow him to relate to all sorts of people quickly and he writes about them with affection and respect. He describes plant and animal life along the way. Through flashbacks he tells of his earlier life and recent experience as a teacher in Africa. During the lonely stretches of his trip he wonders about his need to wander the globe. My husband said when he finished the book, "I've learned more about Africa from this book than all of the other books on the subject, put together" I agree, and I learned a great deal about life in general and men in particular from it.

When I first picked this book up, I was not expecting much. However, I wanted to read more about Namibia and Botswana and this was perfect. The book grew and grew on me. Besides undertaking an unheard of solo bicycle trip of 3000 miles through Botswana and Namibia, Phil Deutschle undergoes some soul searching. So, in addition to learning close up about the people (including customs, superstitions, practices, and prejudices) and terrain and animals in the region, one gets a great personal story. Highly recommended if you are traveling to Namibia and Botswana.

This portrait will also fit neatly in travel sections: itportrays a bicyclist's journey across two deserts as he bikes throughsand, dodging lions and elephants and visiting remote parts of outback Africa. The adventure and observations of life in Botswana make for an excellent and exciting read.

I think that Phil Deutschle is a wonderful author, having to put up with all of that stress of how to fit in time to writ after or at the time of his experiences. And just being able to adapt to a community so quick ; but at the same time working.

Final Destination: Disaster: What Really Happened to Eastern Airlines

Review

Every former Eastern Airlines employee MUST read Final Destination: Disaster- What Really Happened To Eastern Airlines by George Jehn. Several books have been written about why Eastern went down, but none told as plausibly convincing as Jehn’s recent published book. You’ll be right in the negotiations behind closed doors with the union representatives and management. You’ll read accounts of what really happened that’s never been told. You’ll discover that there was more to the destruction of this once great airline than was told the employees. Was this a cover-up for what was really happening on a larger scale that involved the United States Government? A well-researched book by its author.  A page-turner and compelling read about those responsible in pulling the “shut-down handle” of this trail-blazing pioneering airline. Captain Neal Holland, Retired Eastern Airlines & Host of the EAL Radio Show.   (Captain Neal Holland Host of Eastern Arlines Radio Show and Retired Eastern Airlines Pilot)

Based on the summaries I read about they book, I expected it to be a fairly rigorous examination of the reasons, chiefly economic I supposed, of the demise of Eastern airlines, which was one of the preeminent airlines in existence when I was growing up. Not the case. Its more of an exercise in speculation by an eastern pilot who has a very specific point of view. The book's focus is really on the crash of an eastern jet in the Andes which the author believes was the key reason for the airline's sale and subsequent demise. I was not convinced. Also, way too much pilot jargon. Not a keeper.

I remember in the news in the mid-80s of an Eastern Airline flight that crashed in the mountains in South America.I remember the news was short lived and there were no real conclusions to what really had happened. As the saying goes "Time heals",but time can also make you "forget". I believe in this instance this is the case.I was saddened by the facts the author brought forward. How haunting this must have been for George Jehn to live his life knowing and holding in all this truth.I always wondered why an accident of this magnitude had so many loose ends with no conclusions.I cant imagine the pain and anguish of the employees and their families by the decisions made by the people running the airline. This book is a testament for the people who lost their jobs and lives.I feel this book is a case of "Mans inhumanity to Man".I one day hope this story can be told on the big screen, for all to see what happened to one of the largest airlines in the world. The damage that was done to the families, employees and all who were touched and paid so dearly.

Having worked closely with Skip, knowing George and Charlie Bryan, some of the other key players during my tenure as grievance chairman of the Miami ALPA LEC, i can vouch for the accuracy of George's documentation and narrative of the pre-sale negotiations. At the time, the lack of investigation of the Flight 980 crash was overshadowed by the turmoil Borman created for diversion. There WERE rumors and newspaper reports of large scale drug smuggling aboard our planes. We were too distracted to notice either. What George doesn't mention is the hundreds of millions of dollars Eastern had in outstanding borrowing, and, having seen one of the loan documents, I was mystified that EASTERN HAD TO MAINTAIN A CASH BALANCE OF EXACTLY THE AMOUNT OF THE LOAN IN THE BANK THAT ISSUED IT! All the time Borman was moaning about the million dollars a day in interest he was paying. At the same time, most of our fleet was already paid for, which was subsequently brought to light in the bankruptcy proceedings. Little wonder that lists of bank board members and EAL board members is fairly repetitive.I and another pilot went all the way to the Supreme Court, without lawyers, in our fight to force Texas Air/Continental to live up to the Labor Protective Provisions they had signed. The Bankruptcy courts have no jurisdiction over Railway Labor Act, but they ruled in favor of the companies every time, (in the Eastern case), not only abrogating contracts, but also giving employees' retirement pay away to them. By the time, five years later, the Court refused to hear our case, even a dumb pilot like me knew the fix was in.Having proved the strategy, nearly every big corporation in America has used it to rob their stockholders and disenfranchise their employees. This is now the model of American business, and why, unless you are a one-percenter in on the scam, your standard of living is declining. Eastern's story is YOUR story.

I was a big fan of Eastern Air Lines and wanted to know what REALLY happened and who was involved in the loss of this American icon. George Jehn is a master of communicating in a sensible order and clarity of this very complex situation resulting in the downfall of one of history's great airlines. Kudos to Capt. Jehn for this Herculian effort. So many lives were irreversibly changed forever. George was there and got down to the nitty gritty of who, what, when and where. Certainly Frank Borman was key participant. His image has for ever been changed to the negitive due to this clear narrative.I highly recommend this factual account of how this huge successful airline was torn apart. Anyone wanting a career in this industry or is a fan of airlines would want to read this book. I recommend it as very informative and as such, required reading.

George Jehn combines excellent research with a mystery that draws the reader into putting the pieces together to reach their own conclusion. This narrative will be particularly interesting to anyone who is fascinated with aviation in the days pre-dating automation. Includes elements of Alaska bush flying.

This book is a non-fiction corporate thriller, an in-depth analysis of the events which destroyed Eastern Airlines. The author, a pilot for the airline as well as a union representative and board member of the Air Line Pilots Association, had a unique perspective to the events leading up to Eastern’s demise. The book describes several events seemingly unrelated to the corporate intrigue, including the January 1985 crash of Eastern Flight 980 in the Andes Mountains at 19,600 feet --- the highest crash site in aviation history. The author provides all the relevant theories, as well as his own conclusions based on exhaustive interviews and research. He weaves all of these events together, with a compelling argument to make his case. While the events described in the book are serious, affecting the lives of forty thousand airline employees, “Final Destination Disaster: What Really Happened to Eastern Airlines”, is a non-stop thrill ride.

There was a lot of speculation on the part of the writer. I beleive Lorenzo shut down Eastern because of libility in that the pilots were trained going down to SA and not trained or observed on the trip North. I was one of the five checkairmen involved and was adament that training in the return flight was a must after consulting with Braniff pilots. The powers that be decided to save the added expense.

Cathy Glass spins another heart-wrenching tale in "I Miss Mummy." Torn from her grandparents' arms after they allowed their granddaughter to visit with her drug addicted mother, authorities place the child with Cathy. I've read a number of Ms. Glass' books and this one got to me more than some of the others. A child who was clearly loved and cherished taken from those who love her, then thrown into a very confusing system, is the victim here. To think that someone in government bureaucracy has the authority to decide that grandparents are too old to raise a child is maddening. Thankfully, this one had a good outcome. I hope the British system takes a clear look at their policies as in the U.S., grandparents are raising grandchildren all the time. I thought this one meandered a bit too much and some parts could have been left out, but overall, another winner from Cathy Glass.

A sweet, obviously well cared-for little girl winds up in protective care as an emergency. The child's mother is reported to have a drug problem and the maternal grandparents are ruled out because they will be 70 by the time the child nears adulthood. Her father and his wife are the default option. The true account is written by the English foster carer. This is the second or third book I have read by this author, so I obviously like her and recommend the book. Adapting to the never-ending demands of a system that seems at times designed for its own benefits, the fosterers and child struggle along. It is comforting to know that there are warm caring people, who are well trained to care for children in crisis--at least in the British Isles. It is less comforting to see the almost haphazard way social workers follow cases.

I don't often think of what happens to children who get lost in our social services system--because they are lost and I am not. This is a terrifying story of what can happen to a family despite the efforts of all too few sensible and good hearted carers lost in a sea of paper and statistics. Although I could not call this a happy ending, this child fared better than most. I have great admiration for the author. She is a foster mother writing stories from her care notes of many years. I bought several books, which offer a very fair and even discussion of her view of the social services and family care systems of our country--its flaws and benefits. I do not know how this mother can keep so much love in her heart while daily confronted by both cruelty and indifference. I like to see this story, and others, as a call to reform in education and laws. I think that it is intended rather as a call to hope, the power of love, and a renewal of human kindness within us all.

This is an English author who is a care giver in the foster system of England. This is a true story about "Alice" who has a mentally ill mother and has gone to live with her grandparents. A Social Worker decides they are too old to care for Alice. They discover a dad and girlfriend who have not been in Alice's lives at all and decide after a time of visitations with supervision that Alice can be sent to live with them. In the meantime she is in foster care. The book shows the dedication and flaws in the system and how a child can get lost having bad results on the child's life. You will want to see what happens to Alice. The author has written several books about cases she has had in the past.

This is the 4th book that I've read written by Cathy Glass and yet I think this is the best book by far in terms of "suspense". The arrangements of the story have twists after twists to one point I felt that I couldn't handle it. Cathy Glass is able to deliver the story and make the readers feel for the main character in the story, even she is a little girl. The one thing I don't like about this book is other miscellaneous stuff it has toward the end, I had to skip about 10% of the final story. Overall, it's a good read and I'd recommend it to other readers.

This is a very well written story of a traumatized child of a dysfunctional mother. However, Alice is resilient and after being placed in a loving foster home, she begins to heal. This story rings true and fortunately, ends well, even with the initial challenge of the loss of all that she had held dear. I loved it and could sympathize totally with all the characters in this story based on true events.

I gave this book a 5 star rating because, it was a well written storyline. Cathy knew early on that Alice should not be in social service care and her case workers came to realize that too. I fell in love with Alice myself. This is a case where Social Services failed Alice and her family in so many ways. Thankfully it worked out well in the end with Alice being placed back with her family. I love happy endings. I would recommend this book!!

Once you started to read this book it was very hard to put it down. Some of the things that happened to her was unbelievable. The reason she was taken from her mother and grandparents should have never happened. It was only because of the father's lies. She had to live in foster care for a year. You never realize that this happened. Social workers are not always right. They were the reason everything happened. Don' always trust the system to work for you.
