Review
“Thrilling and magnetic. . . . . The Familiar: Volume One is a boldly original, gorgeous, and suspenseful work of literature. . . . Thoroughly encoded with the language of our design-conscious, cinema-saturated, tech-centric era. We’re fluent in it because we’re living now.” —Laura Collins-Hughes, The Boston Globe “A new novel by Danielewski requires a new way of reading. . . . Reading [The Familiar] . . . as one approaches the pilot to a new TV series, Volume 1 becomes a revelation, a thrilling, compulsive reading experience. . . . A tour de force, less a novel than it is an experience. . . . The next volume—episode—can’t come soon enough.” —Robert J. Wiersema, The Globe and Mail (Toronto) “Danielewski has somehow created a format, an experience, that mimics the best of the digital future we’ve been told to expect, while exploiting the best of print, that which we’ve been told to mourn. . . . The reader is called upon to commit, to actively participate and engage in the unconventional structure and its relationship to the sprawling, eight-plot narrative, but also to enjoy: as serious as this all may seem, Volume 1 has a playfulness, a mischievousness, not unlike a cat." —Allison K. Hill, Los Angeles Daily News “As our society gets more technology-weary, it’s nice to see books like The Familiar: Volume 1: One Rainy Day in May break the mold and tell a story in a new and innovate way exclusive to physical pages between two covers.” —Andrew Munz, Planet Jackson Hole (Wyoming)“[Danielewski is] America’s foremost literary Magus. . . . He transmutes the pages of base books into rare new forms and formats. . . . [The Familiar: Volume 1] is a ‘remediation’ of television series like Twin Peaks and Breaking Bad . . . [and also] resembles Altman-inflected movies . . . or the time and place-skipping novels of David Mitchell. . . . I’m definitely in for Volume 2.” —Tom LeClair, The New York Times Book Review“Excellent. . . . It reminds you of the novel’s unknowable potential. Danielewski does this better than anybody. It’s like he crinkles up a page with words and then straightens it out and pastes it into the book, so that only the most important words remain legible, while teasing you to try to figure out the blurry, scarred sentences hiding in the margins. . . . I love Xanther, love her, and I can’t stand the thought of something bad happening to her, and, yes, I’ll keep reading this series as long as her story continues.” —S. Tremaine Nelson, Green Mountains Review“A herculean achievement. . . . The wild visuals render beautifully on an e-reader, but suggest that the medium of physical books is not entirely replaceable. This book may even have a chance to become this age's equivalent to Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Danielewski's certainly not aiming any lower.” —Zach Borenstein, Everyday eBook“[Danielewski is] the most aggressively avant-garde popular writer working today. . . . The Familiar: Volume 1 is as much a narrative story as it is an experiment in visual and typographical forms. . . . It all adds up to something between a graphic novel and a novel-novel.” —Cady Drell, Newsweek “I found it helpful to think of The Familiar as less of a ‘book’ in the traditional sense of the word, and more as a piece of experimental visual art. . . . If you’re a House of Leaves fan like me, then this is a book you cannot miss—because there’s simply nothing else like it.” —Jefferson Grubbs, Bustle.com “The Familiar [is] Danielewski’s most ambitious narrative undertaking yet, which is saying a lot. . . . More than any other contemporary writer, Danielewski has blown the door wide open on novelistic experimentation. . . . [He] has shown, emphatically, just how much formal experimentation can truly enhance a narrative experience. . . . His books are freewheeling adventures into intricate depths and wide expanses, and they’ve helped usher in a new era of the novel.” —Jonathan Russell Clark, LitHub.com“The Familiar is performance art as well as book. . . . The Familiar will be a delight to fans of House of Leaves . . . This, like all of Danielewski’s work, is a verbal structure made for puzzle solvers.” —Lydia Millet, Los Angeles Times “Incontestably the shortest 880-page novel you’ll ever read. . . . It flies by with the breakneck surrealism of lived experience.” —Los Angeles Magazine “The House of Leaves author is back with yet another text-art riddled story. The story begins ‘one rainy day in May,’ when a 12-year-old named Xanther is hesitantly studying up on math while riding in the car with her dad. . . . Xanther's story is the nexus for a score of others, and the author's fragmented means of storytelling proves as fresh and compelling as ever.” —The Huffington Post, “18 Brilliant Books You Won’t Want to Miss This Summer”“Most everything about this vast, elusive, sometimes even illusory narrative shouts tour de force.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“This novel goes beyond the experimental into the visionary, creating a language and style that expands the horizon of meaning . . . [and] hints at an evolved form of literature.” —Library Journal (starred review)

First things first - this is obviously not meant to be read on the Kindle. If you do even the tiniest amount of research about what you are going to read, you would know that. However, the 1 star reviews seem to imply that some people randomly buy books knowing absolutely nothing about anything, so it needs to be said. No Kindle. Also, know up front that there are going to be 26 more volumes. So essentially this is a first chapter. There is not going to be much of a clear plot, sometimes it's difficult to know who/what is even talking or what he/she/zhe/it is talking about, and there is certainly nothing in terms of a larger picture painted in this opening salvo.NPR had an article about The Familiar asking if this book will "kill the novel". The article says not quite, but almost. I think this book is worth reading simply because that question is legit - this book (at least to this reader) changes the entire reading experience. The writing is difficult but (for the most part) penetrable if you have patience, and like with all great authors there are times where you just have to accept that you aren't going to know what's going on. Even though it is 800+ pages, it reads much faster thanks to the artistic layout.I read 120 or so books every year - this is by far the most interesting that I've read in the 2000's , at least from a conceptual standpoint. It is more "Only Revolutions" than "House of Leaves" for those familiar with Danielewski's previous works, but is definitely worth the time and effort for the dedicated reader (i.e. don't get it as a Father's Day gift for a guy who reads a Stephen King book once a year - not that there's anything wrong with that!).The
I just finished Volume 1 and so far I'm thrilled. The book is long but a quick read once you start to get the specific stream of conscious style of each of the 9 characters. In that way, it felt like starting a Clockwork Orange 9 times. The visual elements are breathtaking and the small discoveries like the fractal patterns and the recurring pink thread are great touches that are more than just a gimmick. For all the flourishes this is one of Danielewski's less dense, more accessible books (After House of Leaves). I really liked that he carefully crafted characters you can deeply sympathize with and a sense of storytelling where you can just get a hint of where he's going (This is the first of 27 volumes after all). For Danielewski fans, you'll see a lot of allusion to his other works hidden (sometimes subtly, other times not so much) throughout the prose. Ultimately, I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of what the author himself said in an interview. He mentioned that he wants this series to be discussed with anticipation over a long run like a TV serial. In that spirit, I have to say I'm not completely sold yet but I'm very excited to see what he can do with such a long format. I'm in for at least a few more books, Volume 2 is already on it's way!
Please understand you will have questions once done reading. You will not understand everything at once, that is not how these volumes are suppose to be. He's only released 5, so this is a commitment, and you will be left wondering and impatiently waiting eagerly for the next volume to be released. It's hard to first understand, seems overwhelming, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. There are a ton of pages, but many of them are visuals and more artistically done for the readers enjoyment and possible confusion. If you are new to The Familiar Volumes, I highly suggest you buy both Vol1 and Vol2 together. It will help you, I promise. Like Danielewski's House Of Leaves, this is an experience. Not a book because you're bored, or think it will be an easy read. So don't start this if you like those kind of books.
If this book is the only chance you give to the Familiar series, you’ve done yourself a great disservice. There is a slow build because you’re getting to know 9 different characters. You may think, “What does a little girl in California have to do with an ex drug addict in Singapore?†You should be wondering that because that means you’ve figured out that these aren’t 9 separate stories. They’re all part of a larger narrative which includes the previews as well. To say The Familiar is about a girl with a cat is certainly true, but it’s also about so much more than that. Each volume weaves more threads into the web of wonder Danielewski has created. This volume in particular demonstrates his astounding ability to think on such a large scale while also paying attention to the finer details as well as creating a stunning visual element to every page. Some of them are nothing short of works of art. This series is well worth the monetary investment as well as the time you will dedicate to reading it. I am optimistic about the entire story being told, and I think that once it is finished, it may just surpass House of Leaves as his best work.
This book will bring you into a whole different world, not unlike our own, and ask you questions you've never thought of before. You can get as lost as you want, or take it for the beautifully crafted work of art it is. Not for those light reading days, but definitely for those who are looking for a whole new way to look at reading. It pushes what a book could be in way that asks the reader to reflect on who they could be. There's also a great reading group, which I think this book requires, to really get at the depth of possibilities of what this book becomes as it is read.
MZD's books are simulatenously a treat and a workout regime for the brain - prepare to feel the burn where you've never felt it before :) I recommend this book (and any of his books really) to readers who like to be challenged, who don't mind poring over a single page for ten minutes, who enjoy complex narratives and ingenious book design/typography - you will be immensely rewarded. (If you enjoy the mindf*ck that is the new Twin Peaks for instance, love deciphering the meaning of each new episode and coming up with your own theories, pick this up and give it a go.)

Nice Moderate Baptist perspective on Southern Baptist Life
Great title but the book falls far short of it. I expected some explanation of why, how and who but instead got a lot of same phrases repeated ad nauseum by the author and his interviewees. Over and over we hear about the glories of the Presbyterian Church, and the problems of the Southern - Northern Baptist divide. The introduction was probably the best part of the book. I was greatly disappointed.
Definitely worth buying/reading if you're interested in southern religious history and culture. This book is about the Southern Baptist Convention from 1979, when conservatives began taking it over, until c. 2000, when the book was written. The title alludes to Spain's _At Ease in Zion_, and hence points to the topic. The subtitle, "Southern Baptist Conservatives and American Culture," points to the overall interpretive framework: namely, that many Southerners reacted to the loss of political freedom after the civil war and the loss of traditional southern culture in the 20th century by becoming "culture warriors." Baptists often have stayed away (as a group, not as individuals) from political action in order to preserve the right of private worship: I won't meddle in your affairs if you don't meddle in mine. This changed in the late 70s, and Hankins wants to give an account of how, and to the extent that he can, why it did. That's putting the matter coarsely: Hankins does a much better job of making the case fairly.Strengths: Hankins did personal interviews with a lot of the main characters in his story and did a fair amount of archival work. Overall the book is easy to read. It covers a variety of themes. Hankins generally succeeds in adopting a perspective that is relatively impartial, and tries to represent all sides fairly. So it's good at what it tries to do.Weaknesses: The book is a little stilted in format. The final paragraph of each chapter is often fairly incoherent, because Hankins is trying to make a transition to the next chapter, even when this seems rather artificial. Each chapter has a conclusion, even when there's really nothing to conclude, etc. The sections within each chapter are a bit on the long side; I think Hankins was trying to ensure that each chapter was about the same length, so the density of information varies a little. Also, the book focuses on the intellectuals and activists, though it makes reference to the fact that often the masses of Southern Baptists had different views. It would have been nice to get more insight into the average worshipper, but that would have been another book, and a harder one to write.More importantly, Hankins is a historian, and his background isn't as strong in philosophy or hermeneutics. This comes across when he tries to interpret the debates that he discusses. In fact, interpretation is the weakest part of the book: I'd have been happier if Hankins simply described what happened as best as he could. Occasionally Hankins editorializes on what happened or takes a position on a particular debate, and this really doesn't add anything to the narrative.Structure: the first two chapters provide background and context, and the third talks about the conservative takeover of the SBC seminaries; these chapters are the best part of the book. Chapters 4-5 (about 60 pages) discuss the SBC view of church-state relations, and there really isn't two chapters' worth of material here. So the middle of the book really drags. I almost gave up at this point, but I'm glad I didn't. The final chapters on the abortion controversy, gender, and race are interesting and informative. Don't get me wrong: the church-state problem is vital, but Hankins just doesn't have two chapters worth of material here. The race issue is really key in a lot of ways, so it's a good place for the book to end._Uneasy in Babylon_ leaves the reader with more questions than answers, and that's the way it should be. It tackles a big topic, provides a good introduction to the external facts, and leaves room both for more scholarship and for the reader to continue thinking about the issues it addressed. If Hankins thinks he should, or can, interpret what happened, I think we can understand why: readers will want to do the same thing. So it's really a book that makes you think.

As a child of the 50's, the circus and the county fair were two things I looked forward to every year. Bruce Feiler brought the circus to life from the performers point of view with an entertaining account of the year he worked as a circus clown.
Topic and content is 5 stars. Writing held me down to a 4 stars rating,HOWEVER this is to be expected from a new author doing an excellent job. While reading this I would say it is important to remember that it is ONE person's account of ONE circus during ONE season. The author appears to give an accurate account of his experiences. His book is neither sugary towards the circus nor is he cynical. He portrays the performers as being normal people during something that is unusual. I now have more respect than ever for the circus and it's performers and other workers. I am now interested in reading other accounts in order to get a better understanding of the whole circus.peter soldan
Spent some time on the circus so it was interesting to hear a newbies opinion of us. It was good although a little gossipy.
the story of someone joining the clown circus troupe for a year is fascinating, loved every minute.
This would have to be one of the best books I've ever read. I love every word of it, and I had to stop using my kindle highlight function because I was underlining the whole book. I own it in paperback and kindle formats, and have read it several times. Bruce is a master at getting under the skin and right to the heart of things in an incredibly short space of time. He brings the whole circus family, history and lifestyle to vivid life and his incredible character sketches and acute observations are enhanced by his beautiful turn of phrase. He only spent a year with the circus, but he performed with them every day, and the depth of knowledge he gained would take others a lifetime to uncover. This book takes you through the emotional highs and lows, the trauma and tragedy and joy of a way of life not many of us will have access to. Even if you aren't interested in the circus (really?), you will not be able to put this book down.
Good story and book came in excellent condition. Great way to learn all about what really goes on in the circus.
this is a nice book that tells you first hand about the "inside" of a circus. The author participates "for real" and tells you about his experience.Being a writer helps to get a very readable and enjoyable story that is not over romanticed nor over dramatic or over... . If you like the circus world, you will really enjoy this !
An interesting ramble with a non circus person who learns to be a clown and along the way, learns what being with a 'show' really means.Lots of insights that we outsiders will never see, and a peek into some that are gone forever. Not like, Water for Elephants, but the view from a May Wine character on aworld he couldn't have anticipated.

Johns' brilliant Brightest Day story arc comes to a good, not great, end with this volume. After all the build up and mystery over the new protector of the Earth in the previous two volumes, the story feels unfortunately a tad rushed to close here. First and foremost, numerous characters are killed before Brightest Day ends and while a few of these are re-resurrected by the end a few are cruelly left dead. What's more frustrating however is that some of the minor characters such as Maxwell Lord, Jade, and Osiris, don't end up playing into the story at all. The missions they were supposedly tasked with the by White Lantern either end up factoring into other comic books or they are simply glossed over. Even Hawk, who had been a bigger part of the story at the beginning, ends up rather ignored. While the final reveal of the protector is fun, I can't help but feel that Johns didn't have enough time (possibly due to the impending New 52 relaunch) to wrap things up as completely as he may have wanted to or had planned to.
I'll be honest...the ending is a tad disappointing. Reason being...it focused too much on setting up the next stories, and not enough on the pay off.Problem is, the 52 wiped everything clean and these next stories never continued. Also, without reading the Generation Lost series...you dont know what some of the references mean. That being said. The Brightest Day event is wonderful. And it's about the journey, not just the end.I had tons of emotional experiences reading this...it was an amazing event.I was so happy to invest in the Blackest Night-Brightest Day series of TPBs.
The third and final collected edition of Brightest Day doesn't quite fulfil the promise that was displayed within the first volume of the series as it ends with more of a whimper than a bang. Here, the stories of the recently resurrected Deadman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Firestorm, Hawkman, and more besides are brought to an end as they learn why they were brought back to life, and a new protector of Earth is chosen and revealed. I don't want to give any spoilers away, other than the fact that two characters whom we haven't seen in the mainstream DC universe in a long, LONG time make major appearances here (not like it matters, what with the recent re-launch of "The New 52", but I digress) and forever set the course of the DC universe from this point forward. While the stories of Deadman and Dove (and occasionally Hawk), Aquaman, and Firestorm are interesting enough, the stories involving Martian Manhunter, and Hawkman and Hawkgirl still quite aren't. Minus an emotional gutpunch here and there, the characters are still hit and miss. Otehr resurrected characters like Captain Boomerang make brief appearances, while the rest including Professor Zoom, Jade, Maxwell Lord, and Osiris are nowhere to be found practically throughout the whole main series (but can be found in various tie-ins). All in all, Brightest Day concludes decently enough, but it doesn't have quite the pay-off that one would hope considering how great the series started.
Guys before buying this, know that Blackest Night was an event that was built up for a long time, and Brightest Day sets itself as not only a sequel, but a continuation. Saying that, there is a lot of buildup that is in this volume as well. I would not recommend this if your reading it by itself, as this is complete set up for War of the Green Lanterns that's immediately after. Saying that, this is a good volume. Story is interesting, art is great , characters rock, everything is as expected and Geoff Johns did a great job on Brightest Day.
I love Geoff Johns run on Green Lantern. I own the original issues and the hardcovers. Its awesome. He has taken GL to an awesome level. I was shocked that the movie did not tap into his genius on constructing effective and well developed Green Lantern stories. I recommend it. You may want to pick up Blackest Night and Green Lantern Blackest night before you get this. Great Great Book!!!!
After the Blackest Night event last year, I was curious and admittedly a little anxious as to how the introduction of the new Lantern Corps would mesh into the Green Lantern mythos in the long term. I purposefully waited on reading further until this hardcover collection came out, as I believe that getting the full story in one sitting is far more compelling (not to mention nicer on my wallet in the long term). Needless to say, after reading Brightest Day, my fears for the mythos as a whole have been laid to rest. Geoff Johns fabulous writing continues to be strong, and we finally get something in this book that I've been waiting for since the introduction of the seven Corps: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT FOR THE "VILLAINS."Atrocitus and Larfleeze in particular seem alot more well-rounded as characters now than they did before the Brightest Day. Atrocitus proves that a Lantern's powers can evolve as a character does, and we see that his endless burning rage isn't quite as universal as we were led to believe. And Larfleeze proves to be more than a greedy, illiterate psychopath. It was great seeing more of the backstory for them, even if it was sometimes only hinted at.This is a wonderful addition to the series and worth every penny.

Perhaps a bit dated for 2014. I should have paid more attention to the published date. Haven't felt compelled to read much of it after skimming through it.
So what do you do once you have your wireless router plugged in and your laptop connected to the internet via the airwaves? What more *can* you do, and what if you want to venture beyond the basics? A lot of that is covered pretty well in the book Wireless Network Hacks & Mods For Dummies by Danny Briere and Pat Hurley.Contents:Part 1 - Making Your World Wireless: Wireless Inside Everything!; Wireless Network Basics; Wireless LAN Infrastructure; Wi-Fi and Broadband ConnectionsPart 2 - Boosting Performance on Your Wireless Network: Combining Wired and Wireless Networks; Better Living Through Network Monitoring; Boosting Signal Strength Where You Need It; Staying Safe in the Wireless WorldPart 3 - Wireless on the Go: On the Road Again with 802.11; Staying Safe on Any Wireless Network; Outfitting Your Car with Wireless; Operating Your Own Hot SpotPart 4 - Cool Wireless Toys: Building a Wireless Audio Network; Wirelessly Securing, Monitoring, and Automating Your Home; It's Your Dime - IP Calls and Your Wireless Network; That's Not All - Other Cool Wireless ToysPart 5 - The Part of Tens: (Almost) Ten Sites for Advanced Wireless Topics; Top Ten Wi-Fi Security Questions;IndexIt seemed like (at least to me) getting connected wirelessly used to be more art than science. Now it's pretty easy, and it doesn't take much to make a connection anywhere you happen to be these days. But there's a lot more you can do with wireless technology that perhaps you haven't thought of. For instance, the authors talk about GPS units and how they can connect wirelessly to services to enable you to track your car's location. Given I have a son with diabetes, that's a possibility I plan on exploring so I can sleep better at night. Or let's say that you are a music lover and you want to listen to your tunes all over the house. Using wireless networking, you could set up a wireless jukebox and listen anywhere. Perhaps you're the altruistic type and you just want to share your connectivity with others who need it. There's a *lot* of information in here on how best to do that, both from a security and a technical perspective. Add all that to some very understandable writing on the underlying technologies behind wireless (like 802.11a/b/g, WEP/WPA/WPA2, etc.), and you have a useful and solid book.Any time I read a title that talks about hacks and mods, I realize that not everything will be applicable or even interesting to me. But if I can come away with a handful of ideas and tips to use and explore, it's worth the read. This book meets that criteria...
If you're thinking about setting up a wireless LAN, you would have to go a long way to find a better book than this one to use as a reference for what you can do with the LAN, the equipment that is available, and how to go about setting it up. This includes everthing from the interface adapters to the access points, hubs, routers and so on.This may sound strange, but I'd suggest that you read the last chapter first. It's title is 'Top Ten Wi-Fi Security Questions.' Wireless means radio is used for transmitting the data. Radio means that this is being broadcast between the various devices. Someone outside your immediate area, can scan and detect your radios signals that are carrying your data. You can make your LAN secure, but reading this chapter first gives you a good introduction that will help you as you read the rest of the book. This is a new book. It includes a lot of the newest toys like the cell phone sized Wi-Fi phone. They also cover digital cameras, security devices, all kinds of things that you may not have thought of initially.
Good Product and Fast Shipping.
