How this book got published is beyond me.Here's an example. The very first exercise is to "make an idiom" for your character, and from the tables presented, the author clearly has no understanding of what an idiom actually is. The statements generated from these "idiom" tables make absolutely no sense. Here are some examples: "A raging jester might lose over a barrel." You spent suffering a god." "Blood might lose without the darkest dungeon."It feels like the author just smashed random words together and published them in a fancy cover. It's an astonishing waste of paper and ink.

This book was designed for character creation for role playing games, but it's a super valuable resource for character development for writing and storytelling in general. What makes a character interesting? What makes us fall in love with them? If a character has something that makes them powerful, what happens when it's taken away? Coupled with really great commentary on storytelling is a fresh and humorous approach to the subject matter. Add in some randomizing tables to keep your creative ideas from sprawling.Cannot recommend highly enough. Nevertheless, this book is definitely worth getting in print, or in a PDF option if one becomes available.Finally, I think any true workbook would benefit from a lay-flat binding, and some readers may find it awkward or impossible to write in their copies without breaking the spine. However, coil binding would have greatly increased the cost, and customers who really want this experience can take their books to their local office supply store or print shop to rebind it for ten dollars or so.Final ThoughtsAll in all, this book helps fill a gap in a burgeoning hobby where most of the how-to books are directed at game masters. This book is a really useful tool for helping generate backstory ideas during character creation. Either for a Player Character or a Non Player Character this book provides a good stepping stone in the process. It’s simple and open format is not intended as a specific regimen to be followed for Character Generation nor is it just an endless list of random tables. Instead it is a system neutral collection of brief themed exercises with questions and some random tables. These exercises are written in a way as if a GM were providing a scenario for you or asking you the questions and even have some die rolls for certain resolutions and possibilities. It is meant to inspire you to flesh out what this Character has been through and what may have helped shape their personality and their motivations. The books exercises are also broken up into tiers to have a general gauge over potential starting points in a Characters career. I really enjoy what this book has to offer and I find it very useful to get my own thoughts kickstarted. I would highly recommend this book to any player of any tabletop game or any GM to have at the table for their players to thumb through. A GM might even want to select certain exercises that might fit the theme of the campaigns starting point and use them as handouts at session zero. This book is jam packed with a variety of material to inspire you, a worthy purchase indeed. Thank you James D’ Amato.

It also has his unique humor to get you smiling and giggling while you're enhancing your character. Tracey West introduces some new characters and a new dragon in her latest Dragon Masters book, “Chill of the Ice Dragon”. Mina, a Dragon Master from the Far North Lands, appears at King Roland’s castle seeking help. Mina’s wizard and dragon trainer, Hulda, is not strong enough to overcome either Vasty nor to recover Frost, Mina’s dragon Vasty now controls. The five Dragon Masters and the Wizard Griffith agree to assist her in rescuing King Lars and his court; the Ice Giant Vasty has frozen them all into blocks of ice. After convincing Rori – and her Fire Dragon, Vulcan - to join in the adventure, the seven young Dragon Masters transport to the Far North Kingdom. The battle against Vasty is exciting and the conclusion will satisfy fans of the Dragon Masters.Short chapters make this book a manageable book for readers who are just delving into chapter books. The simple vocabulary makes “Chill of the Dragon” an enjoyable book for young readers. However, I found the repeated use of “yeah” instead of “yes” somewhat annoying. The less complex structure of the narrative allows young readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while reading the story without making them feel as if they are reading a “baby book”. The subject matter of wizards and dragons fascinate my grandson; he loves the Dragon Master series even though he is rapidly outgrowing its level of difficulty. On a positive note, the series has piqued his interest in dragons and mythical creatures.“Chill of the Ice Dragon” no longer features Damien Jones’ black-and-white illustrations. His drawings, unlike the simplistic drawings in some other children’s books, these have depth, perspective, and dimension. Instead, Nina DePolonia provides illustrations that are less detailed; have less depth and dimension; and are not as impactful as Jones’ work. While children, who may have advanced to having chapter books read aloud to them at bedtime but who still want pictures to accompany the story, may find DePolonia’s work appealing, I prefer that even children’s books feature quality artwork. Nevertheless, I appreciate that Tracey West has decided to include illustrations throughout the book.As exciting and engaging as other books in this series, the story is enjoyable for both new readers and as a read-aloud for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Involving both magic dragons and diverse, multi-ethnic children who are learning to become Dragon Masters, the stories stress the importance of following instructions – in the case of the young Dragon Masters, those of their Wizard mentor Griffith - and cooperating with one another to accomplish a goal. Rori’s and Mina’s confrontational and self-important attitudes were not appealing and did not comport with the overall positive message of the book.If you are looking for a series of books that will interest early readers, particularly boys, you will want to look at the Dragon Master series. In order to fully enjoy “Chill of the Dragon”, your young reader should read the previous books in the series so they have some knowledge of the impetus for events in this book. Tracey West’s books are a wonderful way to encourage young readers. They are fun to read, contain enough fantasy and magic to appeal to children, and teach some good life lessons about cooperation, the importance of listening to and of understanding others.

We have been following this series and although the illustrations by the new illustrator are done in a similar style to the previous, the difference was very noticeable and jarring. My children did not like that the characters they have come to like looked differrent. The drawings are not as detailed and the style is not as refined.My complaint as a mother though, was the introduction of the new character Mina and the behavior of the previously introduced character Rori. What is going on? These girls are abrasive and defiant without explanation, story development or reason. There is little motivation, even for a children’s reader as to why Rori is so against authority or unable to deal with rules. Mina is impatient, aggressive and terse with those who she is approaching for help. These behaviors are explained away as evidence of her strength and bravery. There is also mention of how much she eats at a meal, as evidence that she was putting her kingdom before her own hunger, which misses the mark, although I understand the intent. I’m frustrated that this great series has taken such a weird turn with these female characters and feel like the whole story poorly edited and not as well developed as those previous.

These are so great for emerging readers. This is the first series my son has ever read by himself. He usually reads them in less than one day (can't get him to put them down, which is just not even really a problem is it?). They are the perfect series for him to start on his own too, because there are questions in the back, I can ask him when he is through reading, to make sure he is comprehending what he is reading. So thankful for this writer!

My son (6) loves these books. he was so excited when this showed up. Easy read. he is just learning so i read it to him but once he can read he will be read on his own. I made this book last three nights worth of reading but can easily be read in one sitting.

My son loves, loves this series and each time he gets the new book he reads it in less than a day! I'm hoping that the author will eventually publish more but to target growing kids who are fans of this. It's because of this series that my son loves to read and is excited each time the new series comes out!!!

Pretty fun, as my 7 yo says, "Still exciting but lots of blah blah blahs." She loved the ice kingdom concept but found it too much into explaining how the world worked instead of telling a story. This is the one in the series she has not gone back to reread.

This series is one of the best for beginning readers - both boys AND girls. The story is about four Dragon Masters (new ones join the team from time to time), who go have to solve all kinds of mysteries and experience adventures. My son started reading these books at the end of kindergarten. He is in third grade now and still cannot wait for the newest book of this series to be published.

This is the best series of its kind, the characters and dragons are very nice and the illustrations are great. My 7 and 9 year old daughters adore these and read them again and again. We can't wait for the next one.

Quite decent, short and almost pocket-size. Right from the jump though in Genesis they made a mistake in addressing the dating of the Creation events —quote “Genesis does not specify when creation occurred or exactly how long it took” and it just would have been better the writers not even approach the topic if they’re just gonna slide it in on one easy sentence, it isn’t true anyways. It’s funny because it is very uncertain when the events of the exodus took place and when Genesis was written but they write its date as “perhaps 1445”. Truth is the writers are scared of being offensive to anyone, that is fine but they might as well not write anything about a topic they refuse to explain.Imagine a young christian picking this up... reading Genesis 1 where it clearly looks like 7 days and then reading this handbook and being utterly confused as to why or how Genesis doesn’t say how long it took. It’s just a red flag to me, after all I was only on the first pages. I will still use this little book anyhow

This piece of art gives away the entire bible in a nutshell and is richly and exquisitely illustrated; a must have for the learned and unlearned alike.

It is a rather small handbook, quite different than the original Holman Bible Handbook. Because of that and the fact that the information is greatly reduced for a Bible handbook, I would only give it three stars. However, there is some technology in this handbook that earns it an additional star. One of its selling points is the use of technology to increase your learning. There is a code at the end of each book of the Bible that, if scanned on a smartphone or tablet, will open to a video on a topic within the book. It is interesting, to say the least. I can see using this book over time to enhance my studies.

Bought several copies for my students and their feedback has all been positive. Very condense and to the point as a handbook should be. The QRcodes within each chapter are a lot of fun and very informative. I like the section within each book of the Bible that discusses how Jesus is depicted, particularly helpful in the OT books.

Necessary for class - old and new testament. Think of this as Cliff Notes for EFM - Education for Ministry!

I LOVE bible study books. Seriously, LOVE them. And this one is no exception. It's perfectly sized to take with me to my bible study group. It has some GREAT info in it, that my group loved sharing and reading about. A perfection addition to a bible study library!

But now that there are so many other guidebooks to choose from, I buy Frommer's mostly because I can be in and out of the store in minutes rather than hours and I know I'll come home with a reliable guide. Then, just this past month, everything changed... I discovered something new... You see, when I went to the bookstore to pick up guidebooks for my upcoming honeymoon, I got an idea... Since we're going around the world with stops in Milan, Lake Como, Dubai, Shanghai, and Tokyo, and I needed to buy a guidebook for each destination. Why not, I thought, buy five different guidebooks (from five different publishers) and compare them to find my favorite. So that's what I did. I bought one brand for each stop and then, on my way out, I saw a little Paris guide I'd never seen (or heard of) before. So I picked that up too. (I go to Paris at least once a year so I can never have enough Paris guidebooks.) Here's what I found... and it surprised me: My favorite book of all -- for both pre-trip planning and on-the-ground support -- is The Little Black Book of Paris. The other guides I bought are all divided into sections this way: Where to Stay, Where to Eat, What to Do. But The Little Black Book of Paris is divided by area. And each area has its own fold-out map (which, to be honest, blows the Frommer's maps out of the water). While the guide doesn't have an entire history or culture section like most of the others do -- Lonely Planet, TimeOut, Fodor's, etc -- it's well written and there's an overview of each area at the beginning of each section. I liked the guide so much I went back to the bookstore to buy more. Unfortunately, they don't have guides for my other destinations as they're a fairly new series. They do, however, have one for Washington D.C., where I live, so I bought that. I bought this guide to Washington, DC for selfish reasons. Whenever family and friends come to town they expect me to use my precious vacation days to entertain them and take them sightseeing - even though they have been to DC a number of times and know where everything is. Now I can just give them this wonderful guide and send them on their way. All of the museums, galleries, the zoo and other sightseeing points of interests are covered along with maps (including the Metro.) This guide fits easily in a fanny pack or backpack, is spiral bound between hardcovers and tells you just enough info to make a decision on where to eat/drink/shop/sightsee.It also looks like Peter Pauper Press is updating the guides every two years as this is a second edition.These guides are good for sightseeing, and can be used by writers who want to set their stories in a major city (Think Margaret Truman's mystery novels in DC, etc.)Try one of these guides and I promise you will be hooked.

I love the 'Little Black Book' Series. A few years ago I purchased the New York guide and it was full of hidden secrets to navigating the big apple. ( as well as comprehensive subway maps and guides:) This little black book was no exception. I met my mother for a business trip and while she was busy working I went out exploring. The subway maps and information were phenomenal. I used it to help me navigate from Regan National Airport to Omnishoreham Hotel. I visited many places based on recommendations from the book and nearly all of our dining expierences were from the book. The only thing that was slightly disappointing is that the book is from 2007 and thus a few of the places had closed, and certainly more added. Elsewise is a great "paper copy" to exploring the city potentially to be used alongside some new age technology :)

I live in the DC area and found this book essential for the DC area. I use this book for giving out of town guests a tour of the city and even planned a scavenger hunt for locals. It is very sturdy and small enough to fit in a purse. The fold out maps are wonderful.

Nobody does Egypt like Robert Bauval. Here he traces the ancient origins of the earliest pharaonic civilizations, centering his investigations at a place called Nabta Playa. A deserted stone calendar circle in southern Egypt, miles from the Nile & surrounded by inhospitable desert, marks the location of a once-thriving population of cattle herders milennia ago when the Sahara was a green, fertile plain. Many photos; this book held my interest all thoughout.

A question for the authors: how did these cattle-herding pastoralists (a) know about Sirius, and (b) have the knowledge to build the pyramids? (The quality of construction of the pyramids got *worse* as time went on, from extremely good construction at the beginning, whereas the opposite is to be expected for people who are learning how to do something)

A caucasian friend of mine saw the title of this in my office and dismissed it, thinking it was yet another afrocentric rant or something, but I don't collect those. Black Genesis was written by Robert Bauval (he's French/Greek or something like that and born in Egypt) who is a top-notch scholar. The book shows the truly ancient remains of a people who lived and thrived on the African continent during a time period when the Sahara Desert was fertile. Paintings of people and tropical animals on boulders in the currently 100% inhospitable areas of the legendary desert lands, as well as megalithic structures that, as usual, line up with the stars from some ancient date far back on the Precessional long-count calendar. This is the data that goes hand-in-hand with the work of Ivan van Sertima and Cheikh Anta Diop representing more pieces of the puzzle of the mysterious past of the ancient human being.This is actually a wonderful book for people genuinely interested in examining the clues of ancient prehistory, which presents data greatly in need of more dedicated professional archaeologists to build upon who are honest truth seekers who are not half-blinded by institutionalized agendas, and over-biased ideologies to block the way.

This book brought to me ideas that I had not ever considered. Very well written.

It's great when a professional uses his knowledge to uplift and liberate instead of following along with the prejudices and biases of academia's. It's great that Bauval and his team went to the extent that they did to actually produce a factual body of work based on truth and not on lies. White academia need to stop telling lies that black people had no history before our imprisonment. Yes! We are prisoners of war and just because we are on the bottom now due to the societal views that does not mean we always were. We see this being displayed in everyday life. Someone can be wealthy today and one mistake can take it all away and place that once great person in a subservient position. We as people need to learn from history. All great empires comes to an end but the difference between this one and all others is no one will remember this one because it caters to the lowest aspect of mans being.

If you are a person that is on a quest for true knowledge then get this book. Schools really dumb down students and this information Is ignored and covered up. A good read that you will refer back to.

First things first - this is obviously not meant to be read on the Kindle. If you do even the tiniest amount of research about what you are going to read, you would know that. However, the 1 star reviews seem to imply that some people randomly buy books knowing absolutely nothing about anything, so it needs to be said. No Kindle.Also, know up front that there are going to be 26 more volumes. So essentially this is a first chapter. There is not going to be much of a clear plot, sometimes it's difficult to know who/what is even talking or what he/she/zhe/it is talking about, and there is certainly nothing in terms of a larger picture painted in this opening salvo.NPR had an article about The Familiar asking if this book will "kill the novel". The article says not quite, but almost. I think this book is worth reading simply because that question is legit - this book (at least to this reader) changes the entire reading experience. The writing is difficult but (for the most part) penetrable if you have patience, and like with all great authors there are times where you just have to accept that you aren't going to know what's going on. Even though it is 800+ pages, it reads much faster thanks to the artistic layout.I read 120 or so books every year - this is by far the most interesting that I've read in the 2000's , at least from a conceptual standpoint. It is more "Only Revolutions" than "House of Leaves" for those familiar with Danielewski's previous works, but is definitely worth the time and effort for the dedicated reader (i.e. don't get it as a Father's Day gift for a guy who reads a Stephen King book once a year - not that there's anything wrong with that!).The

I just finished Volume 1 and so far I'm thrilled. The book is long but a quick read once you start to get the specific stream of conscious style of each of the 9 characters. In that way, it felt like starting a Clockwork Orange 9 times. The visual elements are breathtaking and the small discoveries like the fractal patterns and the recurring pink thread are great touches that are more than just a gimmick. For all the flourishes this is one of Danielewski's less dense, more accessible books (After House of Leaves). I really liked that he carefully crafted characters you can deeply sympathize with and a sense of storytelling where you can just get a hint of where he's going (This is the first of 27 volumes after all). For Danielewski fans, you'll see a lot of allusion to his other works hidden (sometimes subtly, other times not so much) throughout the prose. Ultimately, I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of what the author himself said in an interview. He mentioned that he wants this series to be discussed with anticipation over a long run like a TV serial. In that spirit, I have to say I'm not completely sold yet but I'm very excited to see what he can do with such a long format. I'm in for at least a few more books, Volume 2 is already on it's way!

Please understand you will have questions once done reading. You will not understand everything at once, that is not how these volumes are suppose to be. He's only released 5, so this is a commitment, and you will be left wondering and impatiently waiting eagerly for the next volume to be released. It's hard to first understand, seems overwhelming, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. There are a ton of pages, but many of them are visuals and more artistically done for the readers enjoyment and possible confusion. If you are new to The Familiar Volumes, I highly suggest you buy both Vol1 and Vol2 together. It will help you, I promise. Like Danielewski's House Of Leaves, this is an experience. Not a book because you're bored, or think it will be an easy read. So don't start this if you like those kind of books.

If this book is the only chance you give to the Familiar series, you’ve done yourself a great disservice. There is a slow build because you’re getting to know 9 different characters. You may think, “What does a little girl in California have to do with an ex drug addict in Singapore?” You should be wondering that because that means you’ve figured out that these aren’t 9 separate stories. They’re all part of a larger narrative which includes the previews as well. To say The Familiar is about a girl with a cat is certainly true, but it’s also about so much more than that. Each volume weaves more threads into the web of wonder Danielewski has created. This volume in particular demonstrates his astounding ability to think on such a large scale while also paying attention to the finer details as well as creating a stunning visual element to every page. Some of them are nothing short of works of art. This series is well worth the monetary investment as well as the time you will dedicate to reading it. I am optimistic about the entire story being told, and I think that once it is finished, it may just surpass House of Leaves as his best work.

This book will bring you into a whole different world, not unlike our own, and ask you questions you've never thought of before. You can get as lost as you want, or take it for the beautifully crafted work of art it is. Not for those light reading days, but definitely for those who are looking for a whole new way to look at reading. It pushes what a book could be in way that asks the reader to reflect on who they could be. There's also a great reading group, which I think this book requires, to really get at the depth of possibilities of what this book becomes as it is read.

MZD's books are simulatenously a treat and a workout regime for the brain - prepare to feel the burn where you've never felt it before :) I recommend this book (and any of his books really) to readers who like to be challenged, who don't mind poring over a single page for ten minutes, who enjoy complex narratives and ingenious book design/typography - you will be immensely rewarded. (If you enjoy the mindf*ck that is the new Twin Peaks for instance, love deciphering the meaning of each new episode and coming up with your own theories, pick this up and give it a go.)
