If you want to read Che’s Guerrilla Warfare, this is the edition, both because it contains changes he made after the experience of the Congo, and because it has a foreword by Harry Villegas (Pombo), who was part of Che’s guerrilla in the Cuban Revolutionary War, in the Congo, and in Bolivia. Pombo has published a book on how the survivors got out of Bolivia—Pombo: A Man of Che’s Guerrilla--as well as several interview books—most recently Cuba and Angola the War for Freedom.But if you want to learn about Che Guevara, I would suggest this is not the best place to start. First, one should read how the Cuban revolutionaries came to power, both from Che’s Episodes of the Cuban Revolutionary War, 1956-58, and from Armando Hart’s Aldabonazo: Inside the Cuban Revolutionary Underground.Too many are attracted to Guerrilla Warfare not because they want to read a serious Marxist book on the topic, but out of romantic notions, or worse, because they think it tells you how to make a revolution anywhere. It must be remembered that most attempts at guerrilla warfare ended in defeat. Che in Bolivia had a real chance, if everything had gone right (see The Bolivian Diary of Ernesto Che Guevara and Fertile Ground: Che Guevara in Bolivia), but everything went wrong. Guerilla warfare played a role in the victory of the Sandinistas, but ultimately an urban insurrection played the decisive role.And the idea of guerilla warfare in the US and Europe would be absurd, if not for the fact that there were militants who attempted it, and wound up dead, in prison, or in exile. It’s not a tactic for the developed (imperialist) countries, or for use in conditions of bourgeois democracy, where legal work is possible. At no time in the 1960s and 1970s was socialist revolution possible in the US. It was possible to build a revolutionary party. Today, the economic and social conditions for a socialist revolution exist here and throughout much of the world (See The Clintons' Anti-Working-Class Record and Is Socialist Revolution in the Us Possible?: A Necessary Debate Among Working People), but the working class is far too confused and demoralized. Again, it is still possible to continue building a revolutionary party.Revolutions in the imperialist countries and the more advanced of the underdeveloped countries are far more likely to resemble the Russian Revolution (See History of the Russian Revolution). The socialist movement in Russia broke with the traditions of the terrorist-populist movement (terrorist used in a scientific way, not as a pejorative), and instead went to the working class. The fact that almost no legal work was possible under czarism didn’t prevent this. Bolshevism started with a national newspaper, not with guns.So to me, the most important works of Che’s to read today, in addition to those already mentioned, are his political and economic writings: To Speak the Truth: Why Washington's 'Cold War' Against Cuba Doesn't End,Che Guevara Speaks: Selected Speeches and Writings,Che Guevara Talks to Young People, and Che Guevara: Economics and Politics in the Transition to Socialism.Note: I am only allowed ten links, so I chose to use them for particular titles I chose to emphasize.
The material in the book is great, I have it on my nook but I wanted to have a physical copy, DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION! This looks like it was printed from someone's computer, the text is all jumbled together and it strains your eye to read. Usually books are double spaced with clear paragraphs, this text is just all smashed together with a rare paragraph break. There are images that look digital jpegs from 1990, they are images i have seen crisp and sharp online before but the ones in this book are distorted and pixilated, some are stretched so bad Che looks overweight.In short, do not buy this it looks like it was printed in someone's basement and a total ripoff; I could have printed this off my PC and it would be higher quality..
Frankly, the book was a disappointment but one needs to give the author the benefit of the doubt. Saying this man had a agenda is the most charitable thing I can say about him. A student of guerrilla tactics need to read this book from a historical perspective. I find no fault with the tactics he espoused but the tactics are badly dated and only a fool would try such tactics today. What is so very ironic is that the poor he was trying to "liberate" in Bolivia turned him in!! Why? The helicopters and jets flying in his area of operations caused there goats to stop giving milk. Dr. Guevara would have been better served providing medical help to the campesinos in Bolivia.
This "book" looks as if someone printed it out from their home PC. The book references photographs which are not even in this. Don't waste your money. Look for the real thing.
Excellent read. Stripped of its ideology it would be a short read. But Ernesto understood it is not enough to be against something. You have to stand for something. Technology has rendered a lot of the advice on tactics obsolete but the architecture remains intact. If you want a quick read and don't mind a heavy dose of Marxist ideology along with practical tips on how to conduct an insurgent campaign, this is your book.

I’m a Southern girl myself and really looked forward to reading Julia Reed’s new book, however, sadly I found it to be full of name dropping snobbery and “misadventures†of alcohol fueled self glorifying reminiscence. If you aren’t in the inside crowd you won’t get it- so, evidently I’m not part of her crowd. If you want to read a book about growing up in the South I highly recommend Reese. Witherspoon’s “Whiskey in a Tea Cupâ€, she’s such a Lady and her stories of growing up near her grandparents in Nashville were so touching that I cried many times.
Not what I expected. Poor writing.
Both hailing from the South, Julia and I are kindred spirits. So her stories in this wonderful book bring back a lot of memories for me personally, as many of the (real) characters are similar to ones I have known growing up in Georgia. There is a certain quirkiness to the South and Julia knows just how to capture it. It’s not just the characters though, Julia provides a number of wonderful recipes useful for entertaining, which we are quite adept at down here.
Shipped fast. Julia Reed is good at writing entertaining stories about the deep south. I am buying all of her books.
South Towards Home is another very enjoyable book by Julia Reed. I've read and loved about 5 of her books, all are very worthwhile reading.

This is the first book in a series of adventures featuring a bear named Joy. Set in the tropical rainforest of Sumatra, readers are rapidly propelled into a nonstop fantasy adventure. Joy will learn a lot about himself and teach his readers about courage, bravery, and standing up for themselves and others. Joy meets an assortment of magical characters, an exotic bird, a magical frog, orangutans, and a trickster fox to name a few.Joy teaches readers the importance of family relationships, stewardship of Mother Earth, and respect for creatures of other cultures. Readers are exposed to the good and bad of humans as well as the inner struggles faced within oneself. The color illustrations move the story along for younger readers and help to illuminate the hidden storylines. The chapter book runs close to two hundred pages, so it might be a challenge for beginning readers who might want to approach it in several phases; it would make an excellent teacher read aloud book to discuss in the classroom. Recommended audience is for ages six through ten, though I would classify it more as a middle-grade selection. I am looking forward to reading the next tale and following Joy’s growth journey.

The Adventures of Joy Sun Bear is such a delight to read for adults and children alike. The illustrations are colorful, powerful and make you smile. Children will love the magical characters who are part of the story with Joy, the Sun Bear. We learn so much about courage, love, and friendship with others who are unlike us. What a journey the little bear takes with his magical friends and foes as well. The relationship he has with his sister is so real; children will relate to them in a big way. This book has many lessons on respect for the environment and others sharing the planet with us. The story features refugees looking for a new home and helping them allows little Joy to learn so much about himself and his own courageousness. The story’s lessons are presented in a fun and colorful way. The kids may not realize they are learning while reading it. I highly recommended this story and look forward to the next installment about Joy.
This is an amazing children's chapter book. It holds the attention and teaches lessons on compassion and helping others in need. When Joy Sun Bear realizes how damaging the forest terrain can affect his animal friends, he musters up what he can within himself to help. Adventure, moral lessons, fantastic illustrations... what more could a child want? Or an Adult for that matter? I enjoyed this book immensely and I'm 55 years old. Also, it's a great way to introduce a child to reading a chapter book who may not have reached that stage, yet. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to see where Joy and his friends go to next!
Ordered this for my 8 year old. She is really enjoying it. It tempted me to go ahead and read the story and must say i really enjoyed reading it from start to finish. I was hooked on the story which is very well written and illustrations are really beautiful. The print is easy on the eyes and vocabulary is perfect for kids to easily understand the story. The story is about a Sun bear named Joy and his adventure and he educates us about deforestation and its effects and also teaches us about acceptance, respect and compassion. All in all its a great book to teach respect and compassion to kids now a days. Would love to read more of Joys adventure in future.

First off, the composite authors name is Lapin, not Laping.I used this book back around 1990 to develop a large software suite. The first 5 chapters are an excellent intro to portable C coding. We used the beginning chapters to design and develop our common platform headers, libraries and Make system. We did not take their examples unchanged, but used them as starting points for a our needs, which was a somewhat more comprehensive system. My team gives the book credit for helping us get us some of our 10x improvements. Still have not seen the likes of this book even today, in terms of the quality of data to use.The last half of the book is a summary of different API calls and /bin functions available on different Unixes of the day. Interesting now, from a historical perspective.
In addition to being everything the previous reviewer said it was, its true author is Eric S. Raymond, rather better known in the community now than he was then. ("Lapin" is French for "rabbit", as in Rabbit Software, the publishers.) So it should really be filed along with "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" and "The New Hacker's Dictionary".
Cowan's only half-right. The "E" in "J.E. Lapin" is for "Eric" (as in "Eric Raymond"). The "J" is for "Jon" (as in"Jon Tulk"). The book was actually a team effort undertaken by several software engineers working at Rabbit Software in the 80s.

I don't understand how anyone can get anything out of this book. It feels like the author has no understanding of the English language at all. How this book got published is beyond me.Here's an example. The very first exercise is to "make an idiom" for your character, and from the tables presented, the author clearly has no understanding of what an idiom actually is. The statements generated from these "idiom" tables make absolutely no sense. Here are some examples: "A raging jester might lose over a barrel." You spent suffering a god." "Blood might lose without the darkest dungeon."It feels like the author just smashed random words together and published them in a fancy cover. It's an astonishing waste of paper and ink.
This book was designed for character creation for role playing games, but it's a super valuable resource for character development for writing and storytelling in general. What makes a character interesting? What makes us fall in love with them? If a character has something that makes them powerful, what happens when it's taken away? Coupled with really great commentary on storytelling is a fresh and humorous approach to the subject matter. Add in some randomizing tables to keep your creative ideas from sprawling.Cannot recommend highly enough. If you're stuck in a creative process with a character, you could flip to almost any page in this book at random to get you going again.

On the plus side, the tables are sized properly and don’t break awkwardly in the Kindle reader like I’ve seen in many other professionally produced e-books. Nevertheless, this book is definitely worth getting in print, or in a PDF option if one becomes available.Finally, I think any true workbook would benefit from a lay-flat binding, and some readers may find it awkward or impossible to write in their copies without breaking the spine. However, coil binding would have greatly increased the cost, and customers who really want this experience can take their books to their local office supply store or print shop to rebind it for ten dollars or so.Final ThoughtsAll in all, this book helps fill a gap in a burgeoning hobby where most of the how-to books are directed at game masters. Most importantly, this book provides a vehicle for many more hours of fun when you don’t feel like you have enough role-playing in your life.A complimentary copy of the softcover was provided to the author for review purposes.
This book is a really useful tool for helping generate backstory ideas during character creation. Either for a Player Character or a Non Player Character this book provides a good stepping stone in the process. It’s simple and open format is not intended as a specific regimen to be followed for Character Generation nor is it just an endless list of random tables. Instead it is a system neutral collection of brief themed exercises with questions and some random tables. These exercises are written in a way as if a GM were providing a scenario for you or asking you the questions and even have some die rolls for certain resolutions and possibilities. It is meant to inspire you to flesh out what this Character has been through and what may have helped shape their personality and their motivations. The books exercises are also broken up into tiers to have a general gauge over potential starting points in a Characters career. I really enjoy what this book has to offer and I find it very useful to get my own thoughts kickstarted. I would highly recommend this book to any player of any tabletop game or any GM to have at the table for their players to thumb through. A GM might even want to select certain exercises that might fit the theme of the campaigns starting point and use them as handouts at session zero. This book is jam packed with a variety of material to inspire you, a worthy purchase indeed. Thank you James D’ Amato.

It also has his unique humor to get you smiling and giggling while you're enhancing your character. Mina, a Dragon Master from the Far North Lands, appears at King Roland’s castle seeking help. Mina’s wizard and dragon trainer, Hulda, is not strong enough to overcome either Vasty nor to recover Frost, Mina’s dragon Vasty now controls. The five Dragon Masters and the Wizard Griffith agree to assist her in rescuing King Lars and his court; the Ice Giant Vasty has frozen them all into blocks of ice. After convincing Rori – and her Fire Dragon, Vulcan - to join in the adventure, the seven young Dragon Masters transport to the Far North Kingdom. The battle against Vasty is exciting and the conclusion will satisfy fans of the Dragon Masters.Short chapters make this book a manageable book for readers who are just delving into chapter books. The simple vocabulary makes “Chill of the Dragon†an enjoyable book for young readers. However, I found the repeated use of “yeah†instead of “yes†somewhat annoying. The less complex structure of the narrative allows young readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while reading the story without making them feel as if they are reading a “baby bookâ€. The subject matter of wizards and dragons fascinate my grandson; he loves the Dragon Master series even though he is rapidly outgrowing its level of difficulty. On a positive note, the series has piqued his interest in dragons and mythical creatures.“Chill of the Ice Dragon†no longer features Damien Jones’ black-and-white illustrations. His drawings, unlike the simplistic drawings in some other children’s books, these have depth, perspective, and dimension. Instead, Nina DePolonia provides illustrations that are less detailed; have less depth and dimension; and are not as impactful as Jones’ work. While children, who may have advanced to having chapter books read aloud to them at bedtime but who still want pictures to accompany the story, may find DePolonia’s work appealing, I prefer that even children’s books feature quality artwork. Nevertheless, I appreciate that Tracey West has decided to include illustrations throughout the book.As exciting and engaging as other books in this series, the story is enjoyable for both new readers and as a read-aloud for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Involving both magic dragons and diverse, multi-ethnic children who are learning to become Dragon Masters, the stories stress the importance of following instructions – in the case of the young Dragon Masters, those of their Wizard mentor Griffith - and cooperating with one another to accomplish a goal. Rori’s and Mina’s confrontational and self-important attitudes were not appealing and did not comport with the overall positive message of the book.If you are looking for a series of books that will interest early readers, particularly boys, you will want to look at the Dragon Master series. In order to fully enjoy “Chill of the Dragonâ€, your young reader should read the previous books in the series so they have some knowledge of the impetus for events in this book. Tracey West’s books are a wonderful way to encourage young readers. They are fun to read, contain enough fantasy and magic to appeal to children, and teach some good life lessons about cooperation, the importance of listening to and of understanding others.
We have been following this series and although the illustrations by the new illustrator are done in a similar style to the previous, the difference was very noticeable and jarring. My children did not like that the characters they have come to like looked differrent. The drawings are not as detailed and the style is not as refined.My complaint as a mother though, was the introduction of the new character Mina and the behavior of the previously introduced character Rori. What is going on? These girls are abrasive and defiant without explanation, story development or reason. There is little motivation, even for a children’s reader as to why Rori is so against authority or unable to deal with rules. Mina is impatient, aggressive and terse with those who she is approaching for help. These behaviors are explained away as evidence of her strength and bravery. There is also mention of how much she eats at a meal, as evidence that she was putting her kingdom before her own hunger, which misses the mark, although I understand the intent. I’m frustrated that this great series has taken such a weird turn with these female characters and feel like the whole story poorly edited and not as well developed as those previous.
These are so great for emerging readers. This is the first series my son has ever read by himself. He usually reads them in less than one day (can't get him to put them down, which is just not even really a problem is it?). They are the perfect series for him to start on his own too, because there are questions in the back, I can ask him when he is through reading, to make sure he is comprehending what he is reading. So thankful for this writer!
My son (6) loves these books. he was so excited when this showed up. Easy read. he is just learning so i read it to him but once he can read he will be read on his own. I made this book last three nights worth of reading but can easily be read in one sitting.
My son loves, loves this series and each time he gets the new book he reads it in less than a day! I'm hoping that the author will eventually publish more but to target growing kids who are fans of this. It's because of this series that my son loves to read and is excited each time the new series comes out!!!
Pretty fun, as my 7 yo says, "Still exciting but lots of blah blah blahs." She loved the ice kingdom concept but found it too much into explaining how the world worked instead of telling a story. This is the one in the series she has not gone back to reread.
This series is one of the best for beginning readers - both boys AND girls. The story is about four Dragon Masters (new ones join the team from time to time), who go have to solve all kinds of mysteries and experience adventures. My son started reading these books at the end of kindergarten. He is in third grade now and still cannot wait for the newest book of this series to be published.
This is the best series of its kind, the characters and dragons are very nice and the illustrations are great. My 7 and 9 year old daughters adore these and read them again and again. We can't wait for the next one.

My son absolutely loved this book! He is very into shoes right now, so I thought he would like to see all the different kinds of shoes. He actually gets it out and he & his cousins draw the shoes or come up with their own new shoe. It’s been a great purchase!
