The two popular translations of ‘Crime and Punishment’ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite – until Oliver Ready’s translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English.Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that one’s choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern – until Ready’s came along. Little things like changing ‘had not’ to ‘hadn’t’ renders Ready’s version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses ‘fibs’ for ‘lies’ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:“What do you think?†Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. “You think it’s because they’re lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is man’s only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and that’s honourable in its way; well, but we can’t even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and I’ll kiss you for it. Lying in one’s own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone else’s way; in the first case you’re a man, and in the second – no better than a bird. The truth won’t go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)‘Now what are you thinking?’ cried Razumikhin, raising even more. ‘That it’s their lies I can’t stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanity’s sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and you’ll end up with the truth! I’m only human because I lie. No truth’s ever been discovered without fourteen fibs along the way, if not one hundred and fourteen, and there’s honour in that. But our lies aren’t even our own! Lie to me by all means, but make sure it’s your own, and then I’ll kiss you. After all, lies of your own are almost better than someone else’s truth: in the first case you’re human; in the second you’re just a bird! The truth won’t run away, but life just might – wouldn’t be the first time.Ready’s version has a table of chronological events and a fresh, inspiring introduction that will help the first-time reader understand and appreciate the context of ‘Crime and Punishment’
I do not know what my review can add to the Brothers Karamazov, but I will put in a few of my words. I have now read this book six times through and every time I am simply amazed at the complexity of vision that Dostoevsky brought to the page. My copy of the book is littered with page numbers written in the margins that connect the dots between all of the recurring scenes, ideas, images, phrases, and philosophies. It has taken years of sustained thought to be able to draw all of these connections, which makes it somewhat unbelievable that Dostoevsky was able to write it in the time frame that he did. Because of this, though, I have found this translation to be the only reasonable choice for the serious student. Many earlier translations ironed out potentially awkward phrasings, and thereby destroyed the parallelism that was being masterfully established.I have shed so many tears on the pages of my copy of this book that I am surprised it is still holding up as well as it is. There is a sensitivity and beauty to this text that I have never been able to find anywhere else, even in other works by Dostoevsky. It is, quite simply, the most masterful examination of agape (active love), faith, and justice, and redemption that I have ever encountered in my life, in philosophy, history, literature, film, or otherwise. There are no words to offer that can capture how profoundly this book has changed me for the better.
Most people know that The Brothers Karamazov is an amazing novel, so I will only be criticizing the translation; however, I haven't read any other translations to verify my knowledge on the subject, and I would suggest going getting samples of different translations in order to best suit your needs.The Richard Peaver & Larissa Volokhonsky translation of The Brothers Karamazov is good. It's being marketed as the best, but it really isn't. There is not a 'best' translation of Dostoyevsky, or really, any other Russian author I've researched; no, there isn't a 'best' translation of a book that I know of. To my understanding the Peaver translations usually stick incredibly close to the original source material, which is a double edged sword; most people want a translation that doesn't loose something or other in translation. This one is very close to doing so, but as I said it's a double edged sword; they leave in the syntax, and a very foreign syntax at that. This can cause problems for a casual reader, but it wasn't a problem for me. What really matters is the readers personal preference. I will add the first sentence of the P&V, McDuff, and Garnett translations to see which one you'd most like:"Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a land owner from our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, well known is his own day (and still remembered among us) because of his dark and tragic death, which happened exactly thirteen years ago and which I shall speak of in its proper place." - P&V"Aleksey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a landowner in our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, so noted in his time (and even now still recollected among us) for his tragic and fishy death, which occurred just thirteen years ago and which I shall report in its proper context." - McDuff"Alexey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, a landowner well known in our district in his own day, and still remembered among us owing to his gloomy and tragic death, which happened thirteen years ago, and which I shall describe in its proper place." - GarnettMoving on to the edition I have. It's ISBN is 978-0374528379, but it is the best selling edition as of 8/1/2017; you probably won't have any trouble finding it. This paperback is a great durable edition. I kept it in my backpack for school each day for basically the entire second semester without too much serious wear (check the photos to judge yourself). The font is big enough to read well without straining your eyes... or at least it was for me. It's still holding together nicely is what I'm trying to say. The binding is glued, too; if you didn't know. This edition has a cover in which I will describe as rough-soft feeling; I enjoyed holding it in my hands.Finally, sorry for the poor camera quality. The soda can piece is there to show how big the text is in comparison. The torn piece on the back is from a mishap I am accountable for not the book, although it says something about the books durability; it happened near the end of my usage with it.

The first volume, anyway. This one is more flashy, sassy, and adventurous and relies more on things you add to your clay, either mixing it in, crackling it on, or painting and wiping it off- you are in for an experience of joyful and colorful discoveries with each project featured in this volume. After you play and make a mess and find a technique you especially adore, or maybe takes you on a new path to discover your own technique, go to vol 2. Polymer Pizazz vol 2 is a more sophisticated palette, more detailed, and a bit more difficult, but each project is just as carefully and thoughtfully picked to offer you a bit of the wealth of ideas artists are spilling over with in this medium.Be warned, though! editors did make a big boo boo in vol 2.. This wasn't the artists fault and i have heard she is very helpful if you contact her about the correct steps, or omitted steps to her Millefiori Masterpiece on page 57 and her Millefioiri corsage, ending on page 64. At that time in my polymer clay career, i had no idea the degree to which the polymer clay community helped one another, and were committed to backing up thier work, or projects representing themI just gave up on those two since it totally confused me, and i was so frustrated the first time i tried it,as a beginner that i stayed away from millefiori for two years. Don't do that- go in prepared, perhaps dropping a note to Jana Roberts Benzon, informing her you got one of the bad copies of polymer pizazz. Maybe ill do that too and attempt the corsage and masterpiece once again.

Nice pictures to look at, but this book is for advanced polymer clay users. Most of the projects don't have a list of materials needed. They just launch into the instructions assuming you already know what they are talking about.
One of the many Polymer Clay Jewelry books that I order from AMAZON. I have enjoyed reading through this type of instruction book because I love the idea of using Polymer Clay. I saw a necklace for sale at a museum and couldn't believe it was made from this type of material. I love reading about the creativity in the use of Polymer Clay and this is another book on the subject that I enjoy reading and owning.
This book was a bit of a disappointment. There are some interesting ideas but the book was not organized in the best way. The instructions and the photos do not match, one has numbers and one has letters which is very odd. This book could also use some more innovative ideas, not the same types of ideas from other books and magazines.
I absolutely loved this book. It is filled with great pictures and is clearly written. I have made so gorgeous pieces due to what I've learned with this book.

A total waste of a comic to read didn't hold my interest an it was dull to read this comic.

Decided to get the whole volume after the first to episodes I brought because It was such an awesome story line...
I ordered this because I am, or rather, WAS a fan of Jonathan Mayberry. This is a comic book. I thought it was a book series. I am mad and canceled my other Jonathan Mayberry purchase. Never again.
'V-Wars' gets the graphic novel treatment. For those not familiar with the series, they are are linked stories about a virus named ICE that turns people into vampires and a series of linked characters that show up in some of the stories. Based on genetics, people can be turned into a variety of vampires based on their bloodline.Professor Swann is a main character of the series, and this book gives some background on him that I didn't know. He is at the forefront of trying to understand and find a way for the vampires (bloods) to live peaceably with the humans (beats). He is embedded in a military unit that is at the front of what seems to be a vampire war. There are groups of people trying to push war to the forefront, and as hard as Swann tries, his words seem to be more and more futile. It all culminates in a confrontation that will leave Swann with some choices to make.It was an okay story, but I think I prefer the prose versions over this graphic novel version. I felt like the art was a bit weak, and the story seemed a bit overly long. Most of the V-Wars stories I've read have been more concise and punchy. Still it's interesting to see this in a graphic novel and for Swann to take center stage.I was given a review copy of this graphic novel by Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
I enjoyed it fairly well considering I had my fair share of war and frankly I tire of it.The characters were interesting, a little flat but we're focusing on the war so building the characters will go a little slower, they were trying to do what they felt was right in a time where they had even less power than a human would usually have.I like the fact that we have actual monsters in this war. We have something, vampires, that people have throughout history considered villainous towards humanity. But what now that they are simply people infected with a virus? What now that the human genome is being altered by sickness and is resulting in these people with powers and strange appearances, not all, but a good many?I feel that by utilizing the fact that humans become monsters and it is these differences that terrify those in power into action, or at times gives those in power a way to engage in violence against a specific group of people because there is already great unrest, and by drumming up more unrest so they sneak by undetected to do whatever it is their queasy, black hearts desire.Most want peace, nearly everyone wants peace, no one wants a war on home front, it takes decades to recoup from that. While there are extremists on any side of anything, political or religious [sometimes sports], they are relatively small in number compared to the entire population, and when we let extremists strike fear into the majority we get issues like blaming a whole population or culture for the actions of a few.By showing an incredibly gray viewpoint, and I mean smack dab in the middle gray, not vaguely stating that group A or group B is possibly gunna turn into the good guys, gives a much truer voice to what war really feels like. And I feel that is how war should be looked at, very rarely are there' fully good or fully bad guys on just one side. Even if the "good guys" come and help there's still the chance that they're only helping to gain something besides peace out of this.The plot flows fairly well, as a comic there's very few lulls, and even then they are short, the premise is interesting and it really makes you think about who really are the monsters in the battles.

I have this CrunchTime, Crunchtime: Constitutional Law (Emanuel Crunchtime), and CrunchTime: Property, Fourth Edition (Crunchtime(r)). This one was my favorite. Some professor's make their syllabus like the skeleton of an outline; my crim prof did not. This book really helped guide making my outline and it was the only exam this year that I walked out of thinking "crushed it." In general these books are great and worth the added expense. Law school is so expensive anyway... I see these Crunchtime books as an investment in a better grade.

Not a bad book at all. It's written in a simple manner and explains a lot of the processes in fairly clear detail. It would be nice to have some more pictures and better drawings, but does the job well.
The author left out some important details that would have made the build a lot easier. He covers himself by saying it's not a how-to instruction, but why else would anyone want it? Basic design is good. I disagree on material choice- if you're going to put that much work into it, why not spend a few dollars on 4140 steel and know that you have a good finished project. McMaster-Carr is one reasonable source.
