Love Jillian Tamaki's work. Not as good as This One Summer or Skim - and it's not a single complete story but a series of short stories - but worth owning nonetheless.
Jillian Tamaki's SuperMutant Magic Academy is a collection of a gorgeous and gorgeously weird webcomic. Ostensibly the story of a group of super powered/magical/gifted teenagers at a boarding school, it's most described as a mash-up between Harry Potter and the X-Men, but really it's nothing like these. It's its own strange little thing.I love that you can tell it began as an excuse for Tamaki to just let loose on the page. Tamaki is known for her crisp and clean line art that she uses for her books, but the art in a lot of SuperMutant strips -- and especially in the early ones -- are rough, almost sloppy, as if they were done quickly and in the moment. It fits the throw-away nature of the humor. The art style starts to get tighter as the strip goes on, and the light gags begin give way to darker jokes and meditations. Tamaki never chooses to permanently stay in one form or the other, though, neither in terms of art or story -- they never stop fluctuating. This gives the comic a kind of fluidity that make the strips range from the relatively straightforward to the surreal and the somber -- more or less on a strip-by-strip basis.(My favorites of these are the ones featuring Everlasting Boy, her immortal, silent character, whose strips consist of what I can only call playful existentialism.)The strips are mostly self-contained, one-shot things, although the last few dozen that end the collection feature a poignant take on the Chosen One story that is so wonderfully and beautifully done that it borders on frustrating (it is so short). It's so good that it could have been expanded to it's own graphic novel. Maybe one day.
First off, I love overall the presentation of the book. It's in black and white but tells the story beautifully. The actual paper is thick and it's fun just to have a copy - and I say this as a primarily digital reader.I love that, until the end, each page is related but individual. It makes it digestible. That said, I still read it in one day because I was interested in know what happened to the characters.The mini-stories are like most comics, lessons contained within pop culture references. You'll relate to some, fist pumping the characters, while others you'll roll your eyes at because you totally know someone LIKE THAT.When the overall story ended, I was screaming I NEED AN EPILOGUE, which the author provided. Neat little bow tied up all pretty!
We bought this book based on Amazon’s reviews for our 12 year old grandson for Christmas. He read it in one day, and when we asked him how he liked it, he replied, OK, but he didn’t like the “F†words. His mother informed us later that there were story frames depicting frontal nudity and a suicide where one of the characters puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger. In a day of increasing suicides, especially among teens, this is deplorable. Though some may find this book to be humorous and creative, we were offended by the vulgar language, inappropriate pictures, and violence shown in such a careless manner. If this book were a movie, it would be rated “Râ€. Certainly not a kids book. Amazon needs to put a disclaimer on their description of the contents of this book.
I used this book for an assignment in my MLIS program and I really enjoyed it. I liked the 'Sunday Comics' style and how the use of color was done with intent. I also really enjoyed the wit and realism in a book about supermutant teenagers.This is a great book for introducing graphic novels to girls (a vastly underused medium because "comics are for boys" which is such crap) and to encourage reading in those who don't enjoy it.Fair warning: there is some cursing so maybe wait until they're 12 or 13 to offer it.
Haven't splurged on graphic novels in like a decade. Review on NPR drew my attention and immediately it went to my wish list. Then I gifted it to myself for surviving my son's fourth grade year at school. Worth it. Poignant observations of life.
I read all of the comics on the website. Then I bought the book and read them all again, plus some extra fun goodies at the end. It is a magical world full of angst and more angst that Jillian Tamaki has created. I can't wait to see what she does with the series after this or what other projects she will work on but she is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
Although the art varies in quality depending on the time of the section presented, Tamaki offers a story and a quirky set of characters that engage consistently. The book contains the occasional bit of humor too.
I love this graphic novel. The art is fantastic, and Jillian Tamaki does a great job of writing high school students who are believably optimistic, cynical, and foul-mouthed. This is maybe the best book I read in 2015: it made me laugh, cry, and want to draw comics. Highly recommended for teens and fans of YA/graphic novels..

Muy buen libro, escrito de forma sencilla y clara, por lo que es una lectura rápida. Lo que puede ser más lento es la asimilación del contenido porque el principio básico del libro es muy contracultural comparado con los estándares actuales de "más es mejor". Me gustó particularmente su principio de agradecer al objeto por lo que nos sirvió y si no hay un propósito en tenerlo, dejarlo ir. Ese mismo principio puede aplicar a otras esferas de la vida, no sólo las posesiones materiales. Lo recomiendo ampliamente.
Me puse manos a la obra a mitad de libro, dándome cuenta de lo eficaz del método. Ahora tras acabarlo, soy consciente de lo "acumuladora" que era y de que guardar "por si acaso lo necesito algún dÃa" es absurdo si no lo he necesitado durante muchos años.
Es un buen libro. Con recomendaciones practicas. Pero finalmente todo depende de la resolución de quien debe deshacerse de lo innecesario, Cada persona debe hacer conciencia de lo que significa vivir únicamente con los necesario. Y esa es la principal dificultad a la hora de ordenar nuestras pertenencias inútiles. La creencia de que todo será útil en el futuro, es el principal obstáculo.Maria Kondo con su método,ayuda a superar las resistencias para tirar a la basura lo que estorba en la vida. La autora ya hizo su tarea escibiendo recomendaciones útiles. La tarea finalmente la asume cada persona.
Me gustó mucho aunque me haya sonado extraño que los objetos puedan ser tratados como seres vivientes, le doy 5 estrellas porque ha sido elUnico libro de organización que meHa tocado y motivado a quitar cosas de mi vida porque han cumplido con su misión para mi.
Me dio mucho gusto que este libro fue traducido al español latinoamericano ya que me han llegado otros libros que son traducidos al español estilo España. Lo habÃa leÃdo en inglés anteriormente pero querÃa compartir la información con mis familiares también. No tuvimos problemas al entender los conceptos pero como que una que otra palabra no se entiende en su contexto. Por ejemplo en la parte de atrás del libro que dice "y te sorprenderás al 'advertir' cómo cambia tu vida". El forro de este es de cartulina brillosita y es más grande (como lo de una mano de hombre) en comparación de la versión en inglés que es como una pulgada más chaparrito y tiene forro más duradero pero igual y lo puedes parar para exhibirlo. Le recomiendo este libro a todas las personas que tienen un fuerte vinculo con las cosas materiales o que tengan dificultad manteniendo su espacio organizado. Ya ordene varias categorÃas y siguen en orden aun con mis dos peques corriendo por todas partes. ¡En realidad te cambiara la vida!

This is a geat resource for those who are new to Pilates and also for some of us who have been doing Pilates for a long time and who have forgotten (or never learned) so of the basics. I love this book because it is easy reading and provides clear guidelines for effective Pilates workouts!!!! I used to do competition body-building years ago and wish that I had learned Pilates back then because I'm sure my body-building and weight training would have been even better and will less chances for injury and eliminate some pain due to poor core work!!!! Better late than never!!!!
I'm a 65 year old woman trying to learn Pilates due to back issues. Look at the picture of the front of thisbook. I should have known even this book would not be basic enough for me. There are areas in the book thatstate "It is so simple you don't even need a picture". I NEED a picture.This book will not teach you how to breath, finding your neutral position or show you the ten basic exercises thatstrengthen but do not hurt or harm back injuries.Find a good Pilate instructor and pay for one on one instruction until you know what you are doing.

I took my first Pilates class and grasped the concept instantly but I wanted to do it on my own. I bought the Pilates for Dummies book and it proved to be a great starting point for me. I never enjoyed Yoga so Pilates is a welcome discovery; an addition to the weight resistance I do daily at the gym. As with all of the Dummies books, this one is easy to follow.
This is a good introduction to Pilates, however, the exercises are a bit hard to understand via a book, but it is easy to look the stuff up on YouTube, which is why I didn't dock the book another star. May be something to think of if you are getting as a book for a technophobe, though.

Very useful material and very comprehensive, too. The author has her own terminology for a few things (her "Pilates alphabet") which takes a little getting used to. Good photo illustrations of all the moves.
I borrowed a copy of the book from my local library and liked it so much I bought it for myself and for my daughter-in-law.I attended a Pilates class and told my instructor that I had the book - she remarked that it is one of the best and recommended it to the whole class here at the University of California, Santa Cruz.The book gives excellent explanations. While the class gave me a sense of how a flowing routine will work, I can do it at home with the aid of the book.I recommend it highly. Thanks, A Pilates Dummy Fan

Not only is this a topical and interesting look at everyday Russians unfolding over the course of 20 years, it's a great read. The author is an insightful and entertaining storyteller. The stories and characters are compelling and the writing is top-notch.It's full of hilarious and heartbreaking encounters that were solidly relatable on the most human level. It seems that not all Russians are reflections of their leader, just as not all Americans are reflections of ours.I also appreciated that the book is written in such a way that it's easy to pick up, read a story and then return for another later- except that I couldn't stop. It's that compelling.
First and foremost, travel writing of any kind is not easy, and great travel writing, harder yet. All too often, the genre breaks down into an author bitching about the vagaries of the real world experience, or perhaps worse, so coloring their prose with carried bias that the experience just isn't shared well. That said, Lisa Dickey is a great travel writer, and this is a wonderful read.In a time of unprecedented political bluster and saber rattling, this long-term view of real people and lives across Russia is an important vignette for Americans to take in and absorb. Dickey speaks with a clear voice, and the lives of her subjects are ours to know as a result.I'm thrilled to hear that the next 10 year swing is already being planned. That's a thing well worth staying tuned for.
I was in Moscow and St Petersburg in 1995 at the same time as the author. After over a decade in the US Navy during the Cold War and numerous operational and didactic indoctrinations to hate the soviet regime, its military and people, I still found myself drawn to the tenacity and pride of the Russians I met. I didn't see what I had been "told" to see regarding their dislike of America, nor did I ever feel at all threatened by these same people who were helping me in my efforts to successfully adopt a Russian orphan. Their efforts were sincere and heartfelt for the welfare of those caught in the aftermath of uncertainty at that time and doomed to the streets and poverty without the opportunity for another life. Over twenty years later, the comment made by these citizens in the author's journeys "about wanting to just be left alone" resonates at a personal level for me, but understates the tremendous sacrifices they made to survive and ultimately thrive in the metamorphosis. My rationale for being there, my fascination with the culture and heritage, and this precious gift of my child growing into adulthood, and their love and devotion to a new way of life also mirrors the 20 years plus covered in the book, though all of ours were lived here in the US. The authors journey and observations are inspirational, heart warming, and at times amusing, but all the while insightful to self, humility and humanity's real achievement to walk a mile in their shoes, and to really know, and love someone deemed by all others as different from "yourself." Life doesn't come from existing as self, it is found in our ability to co-exist with, understand, embrace, and nurture another's "self."
BEARS IN THE STREETS is Lisa Dickey’s Russian travelogue x 3.In 1995, as a U.S.- born writer wannabe living in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Lisa crossed Russia ‒ St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, Lake Baikal, Galtai, Ulan-Ude, Chita, Borobidzhan, Vladivostok ‒ interviewing, and staying with when she could, citizens along the way. At least, she didn’t appear to make any enemies but rather many lasting friends.This reviewer visited Russia over ten days in 1984 focusing on Leningrad and Moscow and a couple other cities near the latter. I remember it as an historically interesting, friendly, and occasionally picturesque place, but burdened by a political system that kept it drab and not a destination I’d have wanted to return to.BEARS IN THE STREETS makes me want to go back. In terms of a travel narrative, one can’t ask for more. Lisa fulfilled her mandate. Nice job!
The book is written from deep experience, with insight, fairness (in my opinion), and humor. I think it would be great reading for anyone planning a first trip to Russia. I like the way in which the material is organized: Each chapter is devoted to a specific place; within each chapter, the author describes her visits in 1995, 2005, and 2015. She connects the information in each chapter so that a description of each visit follows the previous one organically rather than mechanically. My only question to the author would be how she can stand to wait ten years between visits! My last trip there was around the time of hers, in early September 2015. I hope to go again this coming fall, just two years later.

Not for the casual lay reader. I thought I was going to learn all about the elements, their discovery history and gain a deeper insight into the link between physics and chemistry. But if you don't already know all the elements well, and have a pretty good foundation in physics, then much of what is stated is about abstruse arguments between physics and chemistry that can't be of interest to a casual reader. While his scholarship is unquestioned, as other reviewers and the author himself has pointed out to me, his writing didn't help this beginner to understand the Periodic Table.
While reading this book I realized how little I knew about the periodic table. You learn that in the chemistry lessons at school then at the university, but I think this book is a good complement for those seeking clearing some concepts. And lot of concepts and data flow in this book, explaining all the minds that in some way tried to get -and later obtained- the final and accepted periodic table.

It is a smaller than a usual road map and it is very hard to read. It will be useful but a map from an interstate highway visitor's center would probably be better.

This book was very, very interesting. Detailed and concise it doesn't flounder at all. The tone is interesting, not boring at all. The author does seem to focus more on the French than English fashions. I'm not sure if it's because that's where most of the fashions talked about originated or perhaps it's just her area of expertise.Either way, it's an in-depth, and often scary, look at the world of fashion, past and present. Sadly it seems that most toxic fashion today is mostly harmful to workers in countries whose laws don't protect their employees.
It is a well written book with good points to it. It was like a car wreak; you don't want to look but you can't look away. What is sad is that danger to textile manufacturers is still a major problem in the development. The author also points out the need for change and some things we can do to bring it about. All in all, a sobering read.
Amazingly well written, a lot like a academic tome, but not boring. I wasn't expecting to read a more academic book, but it is well done, excellent stories and references and well, I learned a lot about the different dyes, professions and overall health of clothing and accessory workers throughout the different centuries. Amazing to me that these poor people suffered so much for 'beauty'. I am aware that it still happens, and wish it were more discussed, talked about and raised up to the public. Most people have no idea what 'fast fashion' does to people, to the environment, to the world.Excellent book if one is interested in fashion, history of fashion, dressmaking, haberdashery and or just the history of dress.

This book is beautiful and informative, but the size is a bit unwieldy if you like to carry books with you. It’s more a coffee table book, but it’s an excellent source of information and many examples.
Fascinating history with quality paper and images, for the book. Had planned on giving as a gift, but may keep for myself.
