These are great! They are EXTREMELY in-depth and thorough, which is perfect. I was able to make an A in a very hard A&P course. These include a few flashcards to color, which is fun. And the Anatomy is shown from all angles, so you can really visualize and remember the terminology. An added bonus is that the back of the cards includes descriptions of the terms. And because there are so many terms and descriptions, something I did was to highlight the terms I needed to know. That allowed me to focus on what I needed to learn instead of using my study times for terms I might not need at that time, so I would definitely suggest highlighting the terms on the cards to study. These are so worth the 17 or so dollars.

Just got these in. Haven’t used for class yet, but I know they’re going to be great and probably a resource I’ll keep around for years and years to come. The packaging is beautiful, only concern is how thin the cards are: definitely cannot take them anywhere without a sturdy container.

I am in massage therapy school and need everything I can to help me learn anatomy. These cards are beautiful and perfect for that need! It has everything I need, plus some, and I am surprised they do not charge more for this set for what you get and the quality.

Wow, I am absolutely amazed. The cards are so detailed and just beautiful, worth all the money. I highly recommend this product.

I purchased these flash cards (Kaplan Medical) and the Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards for an anatomy class at a local state college. The Kaplan flashcards are organized by systems, such as the skeletal system, muscular system, etc. My anatomy class teaches the topics by systems, so it is easier to use the Kaplan flashcards. The Netter flashcards are more detailed, but are organized by regions of the body, so when studying the different bones, I have to hunt through the deck of the flash cards to find which cards contain bones. Kaplan's organization makes it easier to use, but is less detailed than the Netter flash cards. So I would say the Kaplan flash cards are better for an introductory anatomy class and the Netter flash cards are better for a more advanced class.

Love these flash cards they were super helpful for learning the skeletal system & now I'm moving onto the muscular system their great because they have anterior, posterior, lateral, media& sagittal views only dropping one star because they were some things missing on the cards so I just drew them on the card but still very helpful.

Absolutely love these! I'm taking A&P, and these have come in SO handy. Especially for my video discussion topics. Instead of facing the camera at myself I record the cards as I explain my understanding of the discussion topics every week.

I received these cards a couple of days ago and was very surprised to see what great quality they are. They are really beautiful cards as far as Anatomy flash cards go. If you are in need of Anatomy Flash Cards These are the best.Great buy and great price.

#10,032 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The second book in this series is again an excellent story told by an amazing author. I love all these characters. I think I feel more sorry for Finn than any of the others. They are all very sweet and brave. But poor Finn tugs at my heart strings. I am anxious for the next book. I hope Miss Rayne keeps this series going for a while.

Besides the editing errors, the storyline is too predictable and unbelievable. It also has a lot of similarities to Buffy with changed names (Spawn vs Hellmouth) without the creativity. This book is geared more towards YA not the typical Reverse Harem Romance books I'm used to reading. That may be why I had difficulty finding it appealing. Someone closer to high school age might find it more appealing. The one thing I did like was the cover. Whoever did the cover did an excellent job. I'm glad I have Kindle Unlimited or I'd be upset I'd paid money for this book.

First and foremost if the mc does not quit saying “it’s all my fault” I’m going to throw my phone. It makes her sound like whiniest person in the world.Second of all there’s very little emotional depth or development.Thirdly I have never met ANY teenager who is ok with sharing a girlfriend. Nor have I met a girl who has the self confidence to suggest to 4 males that she date them all. And then for there to be NO fallout? This book needs some work

More please! Holy geez I love the progression with turmoil and yes it's young people but I'm loving how it is getting details and I'm anxious for some Finn lovin😍

This story centers around Alivia and the Magnetic Four trying to find her aunt. I liked seeing their relationships progress, especially with Finn and Liam :) I am really enjoying Rayne’s unique take on the supernatural mythology and can’t wait to see what is in store for the gang next :)

Great action in this book and the characters development is on point with the plot! It’s a gripping book that leaves you excited for more!

This second installment was just as good. I appreciate how slow the romance is and how clean it is. I love the characters and how they continue to develop and grow. While not traditional this story is definitely sweet

They are a lot closer now! And Finn, he is just so sweet, well all of them are! When they are all together, that sweet, fuzzy feeling fills your heart making you want to root for them! I look forward for the 3rd book!

#4,685 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I really wanted to like this book but at about 60% in I gave up and stopped reading. There was too much telling and much too little showing. For example, we keep being told that the heroine doesn’t want the hero...but every time she sees him she gushes about how handsome he is and noble and kind. So why doesn’t she want him again? There is occasional reference to a potential betrothal to another guy who she admits she doesn’t love or really even know, and her desire to please her father...but it just seemed insufficient to me. And the hero says over and over again that he never wants to marry, but his reasons also seemed a bit too abstract to relate to or care about. The plot seemed forced and underdeveloped.

I have had a bit of a rocky journey with this series, the first two books were kind of meh for me, but I took a chance on the third book to finish out the series and actually really enjoyed it, and so then I thought that was the end. And even though I really only truly liked the third book of this series I still decided to pick this one up as well, again to finish out the series. This really turned out to be my favorite of the series even more than the third book, I just loved every second of it. This story and these characters just hooked me like the others in the series didn't quite achieve. It's filled with great action, fun adventure, intriguing romance, and even a good old fashion quest for the Holy Grail, er, I mean Holy Chalice. This one just spoke to me the most. The characters were so much fun and I loved watching them come to love each other. Overall this was everything I could have wanted from this book, and in fact the series as a whole, this was definitely my favorite and I completely recommend it.

Loyalty to family is a concept imbedded into Lady Olivia Norfolk's DNA.When Ludlow Castle is under siege, she and her younger sister Isabelle are taken captive by their father's enemy Lord Pitt.Commanding this attack is Sir Aldric Windsor who discovers firsthand how feisty and strong-minded Olivia can be.He soon finds out just how far her allegiance reaches...doing anything to save her sister's life and obey her father's order to steal a sacred relic from her captor.Lady Olivia is thrown into the dungeon for "attempted" thievery and sentenced to be executed. To save her life, Aldric considers a mandate that he be betrothed to Olivia. This promise to marry a lowly knight would have been a stark punishment for a noblewoman such as Olivia. It meant she would most likely live out her remaining days in poverty and anonymity. So while Aldric knows that his plan is the only way to save Lady Olivia's life, he's deeply conflicted about actually going through with the betrothal.Olivia was a distinctive heroine. She's fiercely devoted to her family and is skilled in combat. Her skills with weapons made me want to know how to fight with a sword! Throughout the story her commitment to those she loves is tested. Her views of loyalty change. As you can see from this passage in the book, "Loyalty wasn't a birthright. It was earned...Instead I had to live in allegiance to God and His ways first." (Hedlund, 245). She was challenged on what loyalty really means to her and not just her father.Through all the challenges Olivia faced I found myself hopeful that she would find the strength to make the right decision, and celebrated with her when she made the tough choices.Aldric was a honorable and clever hero. He has a very compelling and heartbreaking back story that makes you want to root for him all the more. Because he is a man of integrity, you find yourself secretly longing that he'll outwit the schemes working against them. You champion him in his quest to save Olivia and overcome his fears with love.I sped through A Loyal Heart within a day and a half. Every spare second I had I was eagerly devouring Ms. Hedlund's tale bursting with adventure, danger, political intrigue, and romance. This is medical romance at it's finest, so I highly recommend running, not walking to your nearest bookstore or library and grabbing this book off the shelf.Reading is an adventure,Emilee

A Loyal HeartAn Uncertain Heart #4By Jody HedlundSir Aldric has determined to right the wrongs he has committed and has been working for Lord Pitt to pay off the debt he owes him. His latest mission for Lord Pitt is to lay siege to Castle Ludlow and capture the daughters of the Earl of Ulster. But capturing Lady Olivia is a challenge - especially keeping her prisoner until he can present them to Lord Pitt.Olivia is not some docile maiden given to bouts of swooning when danger comes and she is determined to defend her home and thwart the schemes Lord Pitt seems determined to carry out against her father all in the name of the king. But Sir Aldric is a determined knight and she is willing to use his gallantry against him if it will aid her in escape and fulfilling her father's quest for a relic. But when Olivia is caught up in her own blind loyalty she must determine what her future holds and where her loyalty truly lies ~ is it duty to her father or to her heart? Will her answer be the continuation of what she knows or will she embark on a new path? And can she trust Sir Aldric though he is but a lowly soldier in service to the whims of a lord?Sir Aldric is determined to not repeat the mistakes of the past. With the painful loss of his first wife, he has determined never marry again. But Lady Olivia's feisty personality and beauty have a way of getting to him. And when the only chance of saving her from herself is a betrothal Aldric has to set aside his own fears. But can he truly set aside his fears of the past? Those who have read the previous books in the An Uncertain Heart series will enjoy this story that follows the story of Sir Bennett's less than happy brother from For Love and Honor. Though intended for a YA audience looking for clean fiction any fan of historical romance fiction will enjoy this clean and entertaining story. This is a story of second chances and redemption. And if you enjoy a battle scene with some expert sword skills all the better as this has both.As a note of recommendation, I have purchased a copy of this book for my own use though I was provided a pre-release digital copy from which this review was based.I was provided with a digital review of this book with no expectation of a positive review - all opinions expressed are my own.

The Future of Capitalism: Facing the New Anxieties, by Paul Collier

Review

“National loyalty, far from being inimical to a more just and decent world in which all, including the world’s poorest, can flourish, is seen by Collier as a firmer foundation for global cooperation than abstract cosmopolitanism, which all too often serves as a mask for unenlightened self-interest. How does Collier intend to repair the bonds of affection in the rich democracies? The Future of Capitalism is rife with inventive proposals….his ‘hard centrism’ has much to offer.” (New York Times Book Review)“A powerful, bracing call for a return to New Deal ethics in the age of Trump and Brexit. In this masterful blend of personal experience and the best thinking of diverse social scientists, economist Collier analyzes the current breakup of the ‘cornerstones of belonging’—family, workplace, and nation—and the ensuing frustrations that have opened the way for populists and ideologues. He urges pragmatic policies to manage capitalism (which is ‘not working’ for many), rebuild the ‘beleaguered center’ of the political spectrum and restore the “ethics of community” to contemporary life.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“An engaging and well-reasoned argument….There is nothing socialist about Collier’s critique or his prescriptions — like Adam Smith, the oft-misunderstood father of modern economics, he’s about restoring a moral sensibility to a market system that is falling short of its potential.” (Washington Post)“Responding to recent electorate revolts in developed countries against paternalistic democratic policies, Collier explores the reasons for these events and suggests pragmatic remedies employing education, taxation, social services, and political reform. Collier’s wide-ranging work presents challenging concepts from a British viewpoint, providing a meaningful perspective that will reward thoughtful readers. A noteworthy addition to works such as Douglas McWilliams’s The Inequality Paradox and Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century.” (Library Journal)“These times are in desperate need of Paul Collier’s insights. The Future of Capitalism restores common sense to our views of morality, as it also describes their critical role in what makes families, organizations, and nations work.  It is the most revolutionary work of social science since Keynes.  Let’s hope it will also be the most influential.” (George Akerlof)“Economist Paul Collier mounts a compelling and often scathingly witty last-ditch defense, seeking not to combine the “best ideas” of Left and Right, but to fix the damage they’ve done. His brand of pragmatism, or “the hard center,” involves redistribution to the losers across three great divides — urban vs. provincial; educated vs. not; globally rich vs. poor — while preserving capitalism and national boundaries. Pragmatism hardly feels practical in this populist age, but anyone looking for a way out will need a road map.” (Vulture’s “Best New Books of December”)“In this important book, (Collier) analyses what has gone wrong with contemporary capitalism, focusing on the growing divide between the educated and the less educated and between booming metropolis and the declining provinces. Rejecting the illusions of the ideologues and the populists, he puts forward pragmatic, provocative and perceptive ways to deliver widely shared prosperity, by restoring an ethical basis to our national politics, companies and families. ” (Financial Times)“An ambitious attempt to restate the aims of capitalism and social democracy.” (Bloomberg News)

The Future of Capitalism is an immensely ambitious book. Written for an educated but non-technical audience, Collier explicitly states that he wants the ideas in this book to heal the current socio-economic crisis and ground capitalist states for the next generation.Instead of trying to argue about whether Collier’s effort is successful, something impossible to achieve in a brief review, I would rather summarize Collier’s major ideas. In this way the prospective reader can judge for himself/herself whether the book’s project is something they would entertain reading.Collier’s primary diagnosis of the ills confronting capitalism is that it relies on an oversimplified understanding of the individual. Based on the ideas of Bentham and Mill, economists have tended to view human beings as simply making rational decisions to maximize utility. By doing so, they’ve left out key dimensions of human psychology, primarily the need for social esteem or respect. Because of this highly individualistic philosophy Western societies have lost the social cohesion that marked the period from 1945-1970.Added to this is an increasingly simplified notion of the firm. Based on the ideas of Milton Friedman, the firm is supposed to solely maximize profits. Any responsibilities outside of this to its employees/consumers is ignored. In keeping with these two fallacious notions, conservatives have increasingly viewed their task as simply removing government from the market. Liberals have tended to see themselves as an enlightened elite who must steer the economy to monetarily compensate those whom the market hasn’t sufficiently rewarded. In place of this Collier calls for social maternalism. A state which, eschewing ideology, makes pragmatic policy choices to build a true national community and makes certain that all citizens have the possibility for a life resulting in social respect.Collier’s analysis is, of course, much more detailed and his pragmatic policy recommendations are manifold. But I hope I’ve given the prospective reader an idea of how ambitious this book is and whether the type of ideas conveyed would be of interest.Personally, for what it’s worth, I found myself agreeing with Collier’s depiction of the current socio-economic climate but doubtful as to whether his policy prescriptions would be enough to provide a remedy. But I still gave the book five stars because, to my knowledge, there are few academics willing to write for a non-technical audience a book with ambitions such as these.Relatively easy to read, with clear prose and ample examples to drive the narrative, I hope the book is given the serious consideration it deserves. In short, for those who worry about the future of capitalist societies a must read.

Paul Colliers’ title is a poor rendering of the book it covers, it bespeaks a dusty edifice and this is a bedazzling erection of possible solutions to the troubles of modern times. Backing up to Colliers’ favorite time ‘the social democratic era from 1945 to 1970’* there were a collection of ‘wise men’ who slowly hammered out social institutions build upon the social democratic systems of western European countries and the FDR New Deal policies in America to cover the interactions of local governments for their citizens and affairs among nations. The characteristics they shared were reciprocity and generosity. For the citizen some form of support and concern from birth to death, and for nations a willingness to care for the disadvantaged – America’s Marshall Plan being one proud example. Then things changed. The institutions became dictatorial and lost their initial purpose the philosophical under-structure destroyed.Collier list Robert Putnam’s Bowling Alone as a reference but there are many noting where the collective disappeared and individualism became the ruling ideology; in the extreme case governments became agents for corporations and the financial centers and their lobbyists. The results: inequalities arising among the highly educated successful and the bulk of society, wealthy metropolitan centers and failing cities and towns, and the fracturing of such elementary units as the family. Collier is an economist and his presentation flows from utilitarian based price theory but he knows its shortcomings and aims to speak to the general citizen not to the politicians. There is a sociological undertone where he imagines the redeeming characteristic of mankind and views a way to reactivate these and use them to solve existing dystopian natures of capitalism, governments, and individuals. One can take that with a grain of salt and still find exciting ideas for communities to redo their failed states of existence bringing in core conditions for new developing industries, educational systems to turn to the child at kindergarten as the most important developmental age, link businesses and workers using the TVET** methods of Germany and Switzerland, and states recapturing economic rent seekers as major taxing possibilities. These and other are the high points of the presentation and there are many. There likely will never be a Collierism to replace other lingering ideology that he despises, but there surely will be people finding exciting notions to pursue where they can enlist like minded individuals to good effect.*** He is right it is time for ‘Facing the New Anxieties.’ Leadership will be needed. It can happen.“We can do better: we once did so, and we can do it again.” p.2234 stars*There is not a good name for this period in America. the right has hung the ungracious title of ‘Welfare Liberalism’ on it, but ‘Post-War Prosperity’ is also seen.**Technical, vocational, education and training; an idea that seems to be spreading. See: The once and Future Worker, Oren Cass.***”We have never had an ethical world, but in the period from 1945 to 1970 we made more progress towards this goal than during any other period of history, progress that has been unravelling. In restoring forward momentum we need to return to the realistic approach of prudent pragmatism. Providing effective redress for those in need of rescue is affordable and feasible; the looming global anxieties are best met not by Utilitarian moralizing, but through clubs that build new reciprocal obligations among the affluent societies to meet the duties of rescue.” p. 218

Fine analysis of how we got into trouble, if a bit overweight on the impact of intellectual history. Interesting proposals, although many will disagree. Concise book, well worth the time and money.

He describes the problems of Capitalism very well. And the changes in lifestyle, that will be required to solve these problems. If people will only understand their problems correctly.

Very good.

The wolves terrified him. Curzon scrambled down the ravine, thinking about the bodies that the beasts had dug from their graves after the battle at Freeman’s Farm. An escaped slave like him didn’t stand a chance if they’d caught his scent. Gunfire blasted into the glade. Musketballs peppered the trees, nearly ripping his ear. Curzon threw himself to the ground, hoping no British or rebel fire would strike him. When the smoke cleared, a young rebel was staring down the barrel of a British soldier. Curzon hurled a rock at the redcoat and struck him hard in his shoulder. Seizing his chance, the rebel fired. His enemy screamed as blood spurted over dead leaves. The shaken rebel soon prepared to rejoin his comrades, and Curzon was off with him to the thick of the battle—fighting for the freedom of the men who had enslaved him.Valley Forge. Curzon found himself serving in the army as a freeman, without papers to prove he wasn’t a slave. The cold of deep winter set in, freezing the feet of any soldier left without boots. Icy winds swept through the camp on nights too cold for pitching tents. All the barrels of salt pork spoiled. With nothing to eat but handfuls of flour, starvation chewed through the rebel army. Veteran soldiers poured muddy water and crushed grain over heated rocks to make scorched firecakes. Little choice for food remained, other than stealing pumpkins from surrounding farms.Trapped in a world of hunger, freezing weather, and vicious assaults from his own comrades, Curzon missed his friend Isabel fiercely. She had been the one to free him from Bridewell Prison, rowing all night with bleeding hands to save his life. One cold day, Curzon’s former master rode into camp. When their eyes met, past and future caught in one life-changing moment. Freedom and slavery exchanged places. Curzon’s world was about to begin over again. Isabel was alive, but collared in iron, making another escape all but impossible.Laurie Halse Anderson writes dramatic history that quickly captures your heart. She is a New York Times bestselling author. She’s won numerous awards and honors, including two National Book Award nominations, the Margaret A Awards Award, and the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents Award.

I bought this book because my daughter's class at school is reading it and I wanted to check it out & make sure it was suitable for a youngster to read.I read the whole thing in one sitting, couldn't put it down, and it made me cry. There was no inappropriate/adult content.Definitely a great read, and I would recommend it for adolescent reading material for learning about the revolutionary war.I started reading the second book, Forge, and am not as into it, haven't finished it...I just want to skip ahead to the third book which isn't written yet, I if understand correctly.

Forge is narrated by Curzon. The pace of action is nicely sprinkled with Curzon's recollections of his separation from Isabel after she rescued him. We also learn more about his past and how he came to be Bellingham's slave. His resourcefulness and wise judgement of character once again guide him on his path, which ultimately leads once again to Isabel.

My 13-year old had to read the prequel to this for 8th grade Reading, and so I read both this book and the prequel. They both are fascinating and I could not put them down! I have also read another of Anderson's books "Fever 1892" and that was also captivating. I have to say my daughter did not read this book, or even finish the prequel, and she did not like Fever because of the descriptions of people with serious illness. She is a big reader but historical fiction is not her thing (yet!). I hope to get her interested enough to finish them both. I hope Ms Anderson keeps writing because I will keep reading!

I know that this is the second in a series of three books by Laurie Halsey Anderson. I'd read the first "Chains" while inpatient for a medical treatment. It had been provided by the shelves of the sharing rooms library. For where I've been myself I'm not sure of what I'd thought that it been recommended for reading levels as young as high school junior years. When I was from the SouthWest as teenage we'd hardly been told any truths about the NorthEast territories during the Revolutionary war. But although mainly fiction except for some quotes posted before the chapters, I'm trying to learn a little about the NorthEast lands original histories. With my lengthlento the second book though actually, about four chapters, I'm wondering if Curzon will come back up alive. He was not awake when the boat met coast, still bruised from the foul conditions of rebel prison and used to starving which I hope saves his life and he waked up later.

The second part of the trilogy that starts with the book Chains. Well researched history. I used it as a read aloud and used some sections for close reading with my 5th grade class. Before sharing it with my class, I couldn't put it down. I myself learned a lot about the American Revolution, and it was refreshing to hear history from the viewpoint of marginalized people, whose voices are generally not represented. I can't wait for part 3- Ashes.

Not only is this a great piece of historical fiction, but it offers a unique first-person experience of a young man who was formerly a slave and now a freeman fighting with the rebel army. Of course, that does not exempt him from tragedy and abuse beyond even the appalling experiences of soldiers at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-78. It’s also uplifting to see the good fortune and friendship that help overcome these obstacles.

I'm really enjoying this series. It is a quick read, I'm learning about a period of history I know little about and the characters are enjoyable and realistic. At first I thought I'd be sad that this book switches perspective but actually I enjoyed it very much. On to book three.

The Girls Next Door was a secret guilty pleasure of mine. It was on during a weird time in my life. I was the new mom to a toddler and a baby. My baby boy slept very little and I found myself being up with him at all hours. During those hours I would often tune into E! And watch hours of mind numbing TV while I cried and desperately tried to rock my baby to sleep (I had baby blues depression and he had colic.) My favorite show was GND , their lives were seemed so fun and carefree (so unlike my chaotic one) Then I watched an episode were the girls were throwing another playmate a baby shower. Holly seemed so depressed, like she would trade everything she had to be the one having the baby instead. In that instant rocking my baby I felt very lucky and started feeling better. Holly became my favorite on the show (the classy shy one)and I still followed her life after the show So I was interested to read her book. The book while very dishy. Also seems a bit short sighted. A lot of the insults and complaints she lodges. Could easily apply to herself. She lambasts cookie cutter gold digging blondes. While admitting she modeled herself after Hugh Hefners ideal image of a woman, and moved into the mansion because she had nowhere else to go. She constantly refers to "mean girls" while saying mean nasty stuff about other women.I did find her chronicling of her early years in the mansion interesting. The early 2000's were a very different time. I hardly think in todays "woke" climate. That a series about three blondes and the old man who sexually and emotionally abuses them would be so successful. In the end I'm happy she found some happiness in her life and hope this book gave her closure.

The book was definitely a page turner. In some ways, it saddened me to hear that the plush, naked-yet-wholesome, wacky world that was painted for us on Girls Next Door was nothing more than another conjured reality show--expertly edited together to portray what they wanted the viewers to see. It was much nicer to think of Hugh Hefner as a kind old man who simply kept pampered women at his side for company. Not an overbearing, control freak, no sex, no creepiness, no bizarre weekly rituals.... just a nice, old, lonely man with specific taste in women, an image to live up to, and a hefty bank account to allow him such indulgences..... This book, however, tells us otherwise. My only issue with the book how Madison always portrays herself to be this sweet, well-meaning, non-gold-digging girl who got caught up in this world by sheer inertia. Yes, I do believe that she wasn't as financially motivated as some of the other girlfriends. Yes, I do believe that, in some weird, twisted way, she was in love with Hef. But in the telling of her story (how she arrived at the Mansion, how she ended up staying and becoming a girlfriend), she always made it seem like the fame and notoriety were the absolute furthest thing from her mind, and were nothing more than an unfortunate side-effect of being a girlfriend. She made it seem like she was simply looking for a place to stay, a couch to crash on. I often wanted to talk back to the book and say, "Come on, Holly! Who do you think your fooling?" We're all human. We all dream of fame and fortune. There HAD to be some part of her selfish brain that was screaming at her, "DO IT FOR THE MONEY! DO IT FOR THE FAME! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS BANG AN OLD GUY AND YOU'RE SET!", but she would have us believe otherwise. By painting herself out to have nothing but the noblest of intentions, she lost a bit of credibility with me. I mean, c'mon. It's Playboy!

I had watched some episodes of The Girls Next Door (TGND) and thought it was pretty good, though not in any means "reality". I liked the personalities of the three ladies, though Kendra's personality could be a bit iffy. This is a tell-all from Holly's perspective. She is most harsh on Kendra and Hugh, while she seemed to like Bridget a lot. What is interesting in this behind-the-scenes is that she starts from way before the cameras started rolling to when she arrived at the Playboy Mansion, and what she did in order to stay. She talks about the hierarchy amongst the 'girlfriends', what it took to become a Playmate, who was cheating on Hugh, and how TGND actually got started.I found myself fascinated, annoyed, disgusted, and amused by the antics of all of the people involved, including Holly. Life at the mansion was not what it looked like while the cameras rolled and the editing was done. He rented his rooms; he did not own the mansion. The girlfriends, not surprisingly, were more for show than anything else, and they often were at odds with each other. There were times where things that Holly did seemed specious as well. I do appreciate that she included what happened after the three left the show as I had wondered what transpired to have them all leave at the same time. Then there was Kendra's show and Holly's show.Did everything happen as Holly wrote about it? Of course not. It is just her POV and her story; however, it is revealing, entertaining, and educating. I found it to be a solid read without being unbearable. You don't need to have watched TGND to enjoy this.

Great addition to my RPG collection! Very useful!

Great book!

I enjoyed the additional variety to my game.

An asset to all role players and DM's unless you are a strict WoTC person. Also great because you can also buy this with the PDF which WoTC is too greedy to offer.

This collection of races clocks in at 26 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial/ToC, 1 page advertisement, 1 page SRD, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 21 pages of content, so let's take a look!Ah, Midgard and the Southlands - Midgard has been one of my favorite fantasy settings ever and the absolutely legendary Southlands setting book made my Top Ten of last year for a reason - and if you haven't check it out, dear D&D 5e fans, you will want to: While designed originally for Pathfinder, the book has a MASSIVE array of evocative, amazing content that is system-agnostic and makes it an excellent purchase for 5e as well.Anyways, this book would be the one that takes the unique races that can be found in the Southlands and converts them to 5e...but how do they hold up? Well, after a brief introduction to the subject matter, the first of the races introduced would be Kobold Press' take on the aasimar - these guys, in Midgard, are significantly closer to the mighty passions f the nephilim than to the default celestial-blooded connotations they usually evoke. As with the Midgard Heroes-pdf, this one's write-up does feature some evocative prose for the respective races, though we do not get an assortment of sample names for the respective races. Since the race already exists in 5e, we instead receive 3 variant aasimar: Airy Spirit nets you 1/day gaseous form at 5th level instead of daylight. Alas, the ability does fail to note which attribute is used for the casting of this spell- The second ability replaces resistance to necrotic and radiant damage with fire resistance and the third one nets you blindsight 10 ft in exchange for daylight and darkvision. Heaven's Wrath nets you guiding bolt instead of lesser restoration and daylight - both of which have not been properly italicized and the ability does not note spellcasting attribute used. Divine Splendor nets enhance ability (Eagle's Splendor) at 3rd level with a range of Personal and at 5th level, you also receive Owl's Wisdom's benefits when using this ability, though the ability once again fails to denote the spellcasting attribute employed. This once again replaces lesser restoration and daylight. The second race introduced would be the gnoll, who increases Strength by 2, is Medium with a speed of 30 ft., darkvision 60 ft. advantage on Wisdom (Perception) employing smell, +10 ft. speed when using Disengage and proficiency with spear, shortbow, longbow, light crossbow and heavy crossbow. Gnolls are craven cowards at heart and thus, as bullies, they are considered proficient in Charisma (intimidation) when dealing with weaker foes and add twice their proficiency bonus to the check. However, at the same time, their cowardice means they suffer from disadvantage on all saving throws to avoid the frightened condition. Gnolls have two "subraces" - civilized gnolls increase Constitution by 1 and add the same "double proficiency bonus"-mechanic to Charisma (Persuasion) skill checks dealing with foes that are bigger and more powerful. Savage gnolls instead increase their Wisdom score by 1 and are considered to be proficient in Wisdom (Survival) when scavenging for food, once again doubling their proficiency bonus to such checks. The lizardfolk presented herein increase their Strength by 2 and their Wisdom score by 1, with a speed of 30 ft. and a swimming speed of an equal amount. Their unarmored AC is equal to AC 12 + Dexterity modifier; this may be used in conjunction with shields. They also have proficiency with a 1d6 bite, the Stealth skill and may hold their breath for Constitution score minutes. Instead of subraces, there are a variety of alternate racial traits to be chosen from: You may replace your swimming speed and hold breath with proficiency in Strength (athletics) and double proficiency bonus to climbing; alternatively, you may replace these traits with advantage on Stealth-checks when not moving (or carrying items). Not cool - for the same exchange, you may gain 40 feet flying speed (no hovering) and no falling damage. The option to dig through dirt or sand at 10 ft. per round would eat swimming speed (but not hold breath). Some lizards may, instead of a bite attack, spurt short-range jets of blood from their eyes, potentially frightening foes. Instead of the predatory tricks and the natural armor, some lizardfolk get increased healing, adding twice their Constitution modifier to hit point regeneration when spending an HD.Regenerating limbs slowly is also possible, but incurs exhaustion. I exchange for natural armor, swim speed and hold breath as well as bite, you may gain a poisoned bite. This replaces the regular bite, but fails to denote the damage the poisoned bite inflicts. Instead of natural armor, they can have advantage on saves versus poison and disease and an alternate ability array (+2 Dex, +1 Wis) with Small size can be chosen. I am NOT a fan of this array. The base race is already pretty strong and some of the abilities here exacerbate this. Finally, here would be as well a place as any to denote that it's "proficiency bonus", not "proficiency modifier."The pdf also contains a lizardfolk class archetype, the ambush predator (assassin) - instead of the regular bonus proficiencies, this one maintains proficiency with poisoner's kits and the option to use Cunning Action to apply poison to a weapon. At 9th level, you receive advantage on saves to avoid falling asleep/exhaustion, provided you do not move and engage in light activity while stationary and still receive the benefits o a rest, replacing infiltration expertise thus. At 13th level, you do not automatically reveal your location when attacking while hidden, provided you are at least 10 feet away - instead, you compare Dexterity (Stealth) with Wisdom (Perception) of those looking, replacing imposter thus. Not the biggest fan.I already talked about the minotaur race in my review of Midgard Heroes - they have been reproduced here (or the other way round) - either way, I'm not the biggest fan of the overlap here, particularly considering that the southlands race Jinnborn is missing from this pdf. The next race would be thematically one of my favorites, the odd and alien tosculi. Hiveless tosculi, the only playable ones, have been translated thus to 5e: They may choose one physical and one mental attribute and increase each by +2. However, they also must choose one attribute to decrease by 2. Yes, this allows for the cancellation of one of the increased attributes increase. Tosculi are Small with a walking seed of 30 ft, an AC of at the very least 11 + Dexterity modifier, claws that inflict 1d4 slashing damage with which they are proficient and gliding wings that net a flying speed of 40 ft and cancels out falling damage. Additionally, they are proficient at Perception and Stealth. They may also select up to 4 alternate racial traits: A spittle that immediately hardens and restrains the target, with scaling properties, is cool and may replace the proficiencies. Also instead of the proficiencies, they may gain a 1d6 bite that allows for the grappling of targets as a bonus action (and +1d6 damage at 11th level). As a complaint here: Bites in 5e usually do piercing damage, not slashing damage. The third option nets message as a cantrip that is declared to be psionic and thus not subject to interference by e.g. a silence spell and at 3rd level, detect thoughts becomes available, but only once per rest interval. Both fail to denote their spellcasting attribute and this replace Gliding Wings. Instead of the gliding wings and regular AC, some tosculi may have a carapace of 11 + Dexterity modifier + Constitution modifier, allowing in theory a level 1 unarmored AC of 19. Which is pretty insane. The tosculi also receive two supplemental options for the druid class - the first of these would be the circle of the hive as a variant of circle of the land, who receive appropriately insect-y themed spells as well as immunity to disease and poison at 10th level as well as the ability to ignore movement restriction caused by webbing and advantage on saves versus being restrained instead of Nature's War. The circle of the swarm would be an alternative of the circle of the moon, who may only wild shape into insectoid shapes, receiving a modified list of eligible creatures. 10th level allows for the use of two Wild Shape uses for the transformation into a bullette (heh?), chuul, phase spider or umber hulk instead of going elemental. Weird choices there. Tosculi rangers that adhere to the beast master archetype may elect to become hivemasters instead, gaining either a blood hornet/wasp (flying snake stats) giant crab, giant centipede, giant wolf spider or swarm of insects. You may note that some of these options are decidedly weaker than others...but I get what this tries to do. Telepathic communication with the targets...well, yeah, that's kind of nice. The final race would be the werelion, who increases Wisdom by 2 and Strength by 1, is Medium, has a speed of 30 ft., darkvision 60 ft.. They are natural shapechangers and may assume lion or hybrid form as an action and remain thus for 1 hour or cancel the transformation as a bonus action. Hybrid form increases speed to 40 feet and nets both claws and bite, each of which deal 1d4 damage (slashing and piercing, respectively). You have proficiency with these and also receive advantage on Charisma (Intimidate) and Wisdom (Perception) checks reliant on smell while thus transformed, but also suffer from disadvantage on all Intelligence and all other Charisma checks. In lion-shape, you employ the panther's statblock as if you were a druid using wild shape. At 8th level, you instead use the form of a proper lion. For very high-powered games, the optional lycanthropic resistances and vulnerabilities have been included, though thankfully with sufficient warning caveat - the race already has enough oomph and silvering's expensive in 5e.The werelion comes with a new sorcerous origin, the lycanthropic one. The pdf has a bit of a layout hiccup that blends this header with 1st level's hybrid form benefit together. Hybrid form follows the basics of that of the werelion, but allows for the selection of bear, rat, wolf or great cat. Each choice nets a thematically relevant ability and some sort of additional benefit - rats may squeeze through confined spaces, for example. At 6th level, you may expend sorcery points to increase the damage die of natural weapons by one step when in hybrid form and add either magic or silver to the attack, with the benefit lasting until the next shapechange. Additionally, you speak with animals of the chosen beast's form. As a nitpick, the ability does not state the action it requires to activate. I assume it can't be stacked. 14th level nets the option to expend 3 such points and assume a more powerful form (like brown bears, dire wolves, etc.) - one issue: The beat forms have significant differences in potency that are not really offset by the additional benefits gained: Giant rats are weaker than dire wolves, etc. At 18th level, beasts attacking you need to succeed a Wisdom save or choose a different target and you may expend 4 sorcery points to dominate beast, with additional point expenditure allowing you to increase the spell level.Beyond these racial options, the book also contains a wide array of evocative, well-written backgrounds - the child of the divine, the temple slave, the siwali traveler and two variant soldiers: The quartermaster and the groom/squire. All of these have in common that their features are relevant and well-balanced, their fluff being nice as well - no significant complaints here. Conclusion:Editing and formatting are good on a formal level, though not perfect. On a rules-level, the pdf is generally nice as well, though not as refined as Midgard Heroes. Layout adheres to Kobold press' two-column full-color standard and the pdf sports several absolutely amazing full-color pieces. The pdf comes fully bookmarked for your convenience.Rich Howard and Rodrigo García Carmona's Southlands Heroes have an unfair disadvantage...namely that I'm reading the book back to back with Midgard Heroes and Unlikely Heroes. While Dan Dillon has taken on the development task here, the book ultimately shows that it preceded Midgard Heroes. This is not a bad selection of 5e-options...but it is one that is less refined than aforementioned offering. Indeed, one of my central gripes would arise mainly in direct comparison: Where Midgard Heroes managed to perfectly translate even powerful races in a balanced manner to 5e, where it had impeccable design, this one is not bad by any stretch of the word...but it somewhat overshoots the target in my book, at least in some cases. The presence of this many alternate racial traits as opposed to subraces also means that there's more minmaxing to be had here - and indeed, internal balance in both racial options and class options is not as impeccable as in Midgard Heroes - there are generally options that exceed the power of others, which is, ultimately, not the best sign here. Reading them back to back, the difference in a esthetics, rules language precision and system-mastery can be felt. In short: This feels a bit like D&D 5e has been infiltrated by some PFRPG design aesthetics. Not by much, mind you - this is still very much 5e, though and through...but the nagging feeling is here.On a formal level, I am also pretty bummed to not see a proper take on the jinnborn in the book. That being said, this is by no means a bad book; it is, however, one whose class options won't necessarily blow you away and GMs will want to take a close look at the races before allowing them. The payoff of strengths and weaknesses simply does not reach the perfect equilibrium of Midgard Heroes. How to rate this, then? Well, as mentioned before, this is by no means a bad offering, though, as a person, I am significantly less impressed by this book. Hence, my final verdict will clock in at 3.5 stars. And while, as a person, I will round down (I'm pretty big on maintaining a system's design-aesthetics), my official review will round up due to in dubio pro reo.Endzeitgeist out.
