Schindler are among the most celebrated examples of 20th-century domestic architecture in the United States. Yet it took decades for the Austrian émigré, who died in 1953, to convince the East Coast architecture establishment that his kind of modernism was worthy. While his sometime colleague Richard Neutra pursued the Corbusian ideal of the house as a "machine for living," Schindler designed organic forms--angled walls, variously sized windows, plans that shift off-axis--that respond to multiple aspects of the individual site. In 1921, while still employed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Schindler designed the tilt-up concrete Kings Road House for himself and his wife, Pauline. This landmark early project--fulfilling, in his words, "the basic requirements for a camper's shelter"--was designed to be shared with a contractor friend and his wife. The house became a haven for fellow bohemians, a scene entertainingly described in one chapter of this excellent and copiously illustrated study of Schindler's contribution to modernism and the architecture of Los Angeles. During the following years, the "rustic complexity" of the Lovell Beach House (1922-26) gave way to increasing international style influence, visible in the John J. Buck Residence (1934), with its flat roofs and sliding walls of glass. Schindler's late work explored increasingly personal forms of "space architecture," culminating in the delicate crow's nest design of the Ellen Janson Residence (1948-49). This book accompanies an exhibition that travels to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. In life, avant-garde West Coast architect Rudolf Schindler had his loyal admirers, but he was largely dismissed by prominent tastemakers for perceived transgressions against Modernist design principles. Only long after his death in 1953 have serious efforts gone into assessing his oeuvre. The books reviewed here are welcome additions to the now-burgeoning field of Schindler studies. The Architecture of R.M. Schindler offers five scholarly essays and a wealth of illustrations and photos. Curators Smith and Darling compiled the catalog to accompany a major retrospective put together by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and traveling to Washington, DC, and Vienna, Austria. The text examines the distinct phases of his creative evolution from 1912 until his death but breaks no new ground, except perhaps for disclosures found in recently released personal correspondence detailing the bohemian life Schindler and family led at his west Los Angeles home. It is this landmark 1921 house that is the subject of Schindler House, a happy collaboration between one-time resident Smith (Frank Lloyd Wright: Hollyhock House and Olive Hall) and photographer Mudford. As his own home, Schindler built one of the most startlingly original structures of the 20th century, provoking both fulsome praise and bewildered condemnation. Probing its history and presenting the structure from all angles, this slim volume does more to promote an appreciation of this legendary abode than any prior publication. I first saw this book while visiting the Schindler archive at the University of California Santa Barbara. As I am in the process of writing a book about the history of SILVER LAKE, I dearly wanted to have a copy for my research, but was hesitant because of the price. When I was able to purchase a "like new" copy from a reseller at a discounted price, I jumped at the opportunity. I was even more surprised when the seller, who happened to be a neighbor, delivered the book in person to my house the next day!
So far this is the best book I've read on this architect. Many great pictures of his work in this book.
Schindler in his day was much underappreicated, people just did not "get" his work, but as you look at his work through the prism of this wonderful book, you can see his influence on modern architecture is indescribable. You can see his influence especially in Richard Meier's work. It is a shame that he did not live to see his work so revered, but at least books like this one, with its insightful text and wonderful images, are out there for people to look through and marvel at his work.
This book is a wonderful retrospective of Schindler's work. Though its easy to slip into hyperbole, this book is a must for the student of one of the last centuries most interesting architects. Schindler's work was overlooked in his day, some say due to not being chosen by Philip Johnson to be included in a very high-profile architectural show. Johnson himself has admitted his error! The book has several different articles on various aspects of Schindler's world, one focusing on his relationship with his wife, as well as presenting drawings, plans, photos of work-sites and social snapshots that are so important given the social nature of Schindler's work. A place to start or a place to refresh your studies. When they put this book together, they hit the nail on the head.

About the Author
Julia Greenspan, N.D. runs the private medical practice Greenhouse Naturopathic Medicine, and has been treating patients for tick-borne disease in New Hampshire--one of the epicenters for Lyme disease--for more than ten years. She is a member of the International Lyme and Associated Disease Society (ILADS), the New Hampshire Association of Naturopathic Doctors, and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon and is a graduate of the National College of Natural Medicine. She served as the Chair for the Naturopathic Board of Examiners for the State of New Hampshire for five years and has been interviewed as an expert in Lyme disease on both radio and television, in addition to being published in the Naturopathic Doctor News and Review, the national publication for Naturopathic Physicians. I am currently being treated for Lyme in Dr. Greenspan’s practice. I bought her book additional insight into this disease! In the very first chapter I felt like I was reading about myself! This book is full of information on Lyme! The book makes me feel like I am not alone and that all the difficulties I have had for over two years are warranted! I trust her and Dr. Greens judgement and in their care. Do not hesitate to buy and read this amazing book! You will not be disappointed. It will answer questions you have had or are currently having. This book goes into great detail and how primary care does not understand Lyme. Naturopathic medicine along with traditional medicine is the best way to tackle this disease and epidemic!
What a great resource for those of us that either have Lyme or treat client/ patients that have it. Dr. Greenspan goes above and beyond just treating the physical aspects. I encourage anyone who has been recently diagnosed or is chronic to buy this book and know there is hope outside of the general MD practices to help us get better. It is a Comprehensive Reference on how to heal from Lyme Disease and it’s co infections; with a multi layered approach to treatment. Easy enough to understand for the average person but deep enough for practitioners as well. Through and empowering, this book will become the the go to reference for anyone trying to heal from Lyme. Myself and several family members have been very fortunate to have been treated by Dr Greenspan. For myself, years ago when chronic health issues could not be diagnosed by my PCP; Dr Greenspan recognized the connection to Lyme and saved me from what had become debilitating symptoms. This is one of my favorite WFRP sourcebooks, especially for people looking to expose people to the game who are used to more traditional fantasy RPGs. Warhammer games rarely if ever have a lot of true dungeons in them, and this book provides them in spades, and with a definite WFRP bent. The book breaks down in a few sections:OverviewKarak Azgal/Skalf's Hold- detailing the city properDeadgate- all about the shantytown outside the wallsRuins- several chapters explaining the various tribes, creatures, factions and dangers in the enormous dungeon, ending with a Very Big Bad if you need one.Each section gives you a background, a slew of NPCs to uses as hooks, several dark dealings going on that the characters may find themselves involved in, places of note, etc. The dungeon section has some great and detailed monsters and situations but leaves tons of room for your own ideas.Full disclosure, I really love the open world style of supplement as opposed to the closed campaign with a pre-set narrative for the PCs to follow. So this is pretty much the ideal style for me, where as I found The Enemy Within (the perennial favorite-campaign-ever of so many WFRP players) to be far too rail-roady for my tastes. If you are looking for a sit down and play out of the box supplement, this isn't it. If you want rich and deep inspiration with tons of hooks, backstory and color, this is fantastic.

Great sourcebook for me. I love the explanation of a Dwarf Hold and the surrounding city that grew up around. I knew of Kara Azgal from playing a "Mordheim" scenarios and this sourcebook brought the place even more to life. Additionally it provides some real nice stuff on dungeon delving. Something I have done in D&D stuff, but not very much in Warhammer. In fact I plan to use Karak Azgal to start a new campaign with a bunch of d20 players. They will be a bit familiar with dungone delving and will allow them to transition into the game easier.
Karak Azgal is a sourcebook for the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay game's Second Edition, detailing a dwarf-run city in the mountains. It combines adventure hooks aboveground in the city built over the ruins of the dragon-destroyed dwarf city, and in the underground passages below.

Moon Shot by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton is their tale on the history of NASA, themselves and the race to the Moon.This book is really great in the story told about NASA. All from the humble beginnings, how JFK pumped in more money to the Moon landing and the end of the Apollo program.Some of the most interesting content I found was about the analysis of the political situation when JFK needed something to boost his popularity and put forth the mission to land a person on the Moon within the decade, the description of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs and the detailed descriptions of most of the missions and the milestones set in order to reach the Moon.What I found lacking was the actual Moon missions themselves. The book builds up the race and the payoff simply isn't there. The Apollo 11 mission is absolutely amazing to read about, 13 is described well due to being some of the best problem solving ever done in NASA under incredible stress, 14 is described in incredible detail because it's Alan Shepard's Moon mission and the rest of the actual Moon missions are simply glossed over.Another aspect that annoyed me a bit is the focus on Shepard and Slayton. While Shepard's story is remarkable and Slayton has been instrumental for NASA, it just reads out as Shepard and Slayton bragging a lot. Both because anything involving the two is takes up 2-3 chapters but also because it seems like all the other astronauts who paved the road to the Moon, who landed on the Moon and cosmonauts doing just as admirable achievements are completely relegated to the background while Shepard, Slayton and the rest of the Mercury Seven are held up as the original heroes. I understand that they could only write about what they knew the best but it feels disrespectful to the others to give so much real estate to the Mercury Seven when the book is supposed to be about the entire NASA history up till the end of the Apollo program.Lastly the last chapter also shouldn't have been included. The chapter is about the future of NASA and America's lack of enthusiasm in space. More specifically they lament the recent (Obama administration) cuts to NASA. This chapter just feels very much out of place. I don't quite understand why it's been added as it tarnishes the rest of the book.I would still recommend it but I will be seeking out more books that can cover the intimate details of the Apollo programs, what the Moon landings discovered and NASA's later history. It is however great for describing the early days and there probably won't be any other book as good on the Mercury missions.
I enjoyed this chronicle of the early American space program up until the Apollo Soyuz mission. The introspective narrative around Shepherd and Slayton have it a memoir feeling and the struggles these two men endured to fly were inspirational.Then the afterword came. A vicious and biased screed accusing the Obama administration of purposely destroying NASA. Barbree showed his partisanship and pettiness. To point the finger at an administration facing the greatest economic crisis for cutting the budget is disingenuous...especially when ignoring the mess at NASA that led to multiple probes being lost and the Columbia disaster.Good book until cranky Barbree decided to mislead and show his biases.
Anyone looking for a detailed, blow-by-blow of everything that happened during the space race and slightly beyond may be slightly disappointed. This book reads more like a novel, capturing the excitement of what was nothing but fantasy to most people in the 1950s. The different missions of Mercury and Gemini leading up to Apollo 11 and beyond capture more of the human element, the glories and the frustrations of a group of men attempting to make the impossible possible. The culmination of two opponents, Russia and America, becoming partners in a joint space effort was heartening.Whether I agree or disagree with the last chapter’s clumsy step into the political arena makes no difference. After an incredible story, I felt a political rant was uncharacteristic of the rest of the book. I wish I had stopped and not read the last few pages.Overall, a fun read and a different look at the space race as opposed to some of the fact-full but dryer versions I have seen. Four stars.
If you're interested in NASA's history, especially if your a baby boomer, you will love this book. I was totally captivated. It reveals things that happened behind the scenes that I had not known about or had forgotten. The affects of the Russian's launching of Sputnik started a journey that clearly showed the determination, ingenuity, perseverance, and above all, the courage of the American people. It also showed the tragedy that can happen when deadlines are put before safety.On a personal note, it brought back a memory that I hadn't thought of in many years. On a chilly night in October, 1957 when I was eleven years old, my father let my two brothers and I get on our garage roof in Lincoln Nebraska to watch Sputnik go over. I can still see that bright object going across the sky.
Loved this book! I have read other books on the space program, but this was by far the best. I found the writing to be excellent.....no tech jargon here, just great stories of behind the scenes happenings in the space programs. It was fun to read the astronaut views and feelings as the programs were evolving. Nothing got into boring details, although when needed, a story was told with enough detail to make a reader grasp the issue at hand. I liked hearing about the Russian programs going on during the American efforts. Overall, this was a great book telling ....as the title says....the inside stories.
I'd read a little about the space race over the years but didn't really know the story. I read this along with Hidden Figures and the two books together were very interesting. The story in this book is well told. I find it nostalgic, however, because I think we have maybe lost some of our inherent competencies as a nation in the decades since. It's a very interesting ride through the growth of aeronautics, space flight and engineering and gives some of the iconic characters involved a more three dimensional feel. Reading of how some of these pilots handled the early flights is sobering and fascinating. You don't have to be a space buff to enjoy this book.
