I read this book two years ago and recently decided to re-read all my Laura Kinsale books, saving the best for the last. I do believe I enjoyed this story more the second time around. What a roller coaster ride Ms. Kinsale takes the reader on, as we maneuver through the life of a powerful young duke who was born to prestige, riches, extravagance, the pleasure of women, whatever his heart desired, going on the ride of his life without having an inkling of how quickly everything in one's world can change - often, never to be the same.Christian Langland, Duke of Jervaulx, is a brilliant mathematician, all around rake, lover of dogs and a faithful friend. When his paramour's husband catches him leaving his wife's bed and calls him out, Christian isn't aware that he's in the middle of his life's greatest crisis. Yes, the strange sensation he has upon leaving his mistress's bed and walking down the stairs was a stroke in the making.Although struggling mightily with a headache and strange sensations in his arm and hand, Christian keeps his commitments during the next couple of days, including a lecture at the Analytical Society in order to present a paper he and an elderly, blind Quaker gentleman - Mr. Timms, have collaborated upon via messenger. Mr. Timms' daughter, Archimedia (Maddy) knows Christian's reputation and is very concerned he's going to play her kindly, mild-mannered father false just for a big joke. Not so - Christian may be many things, but in his heart, he's serious about math and values his work with Mr. Timms.However, when he collapses on the dueling field the morning after the lecture, the world believes he has died. It's a blow to Mr. Tibbs who genuinely respected Christian's mind and truly enjoyed their collaborative work.Fast forward to some weeks later. As Maddy and her father tour her cousin's brand new, high class asylum where Maddy is considering taking a position, she is shocked beyond measure to recognize Christian as one of the residents of the asylum. Further, apparently he's considered to be a dangerous madman without the ability to communicate. But, Christian and Maddy have a strong connection and very shortly she begins to realize Christian is still there, if she can only help him find his way out of the darkness.**Spoilerish** The rest of the story takes the reader on a fascinating journey that frankly, I don't have words to describe. Not only does Christian struggle with a serious lack of communication, he's had not a single person to stand up for him. He's almost as angry at how he's been treated as he is at his inability to communicate. Some parts of the book are difficult to take in - such as his cruel and callous treatment by staff members at the asylum.When Maddy decides to throw her support behind Christian, she battles with guilt over whether or not she's compromising the principles of her faith. Thankfully, her faith does give some leeway within the foundational beliefs to allow her to hear from God for herself. Once she has this connection, she decides to throw her lot in with Christian and do whatever she can to help him, but all along the way, she questions whether or not she's making the right choice. Ms. Kinsale has created a very strong character in Christian - possibly the most determined Hero I've ever encountered. To say that Christian drags Maddy kicking and screaming into helping him would be an understatement. Even with his massive disability, he has such drive and determination, heaven help anyone who dares stand in his way. And yet, he desperately needed Maddy. She was an angel sent from heaven. The first time we hear Christian say "Maddy Girl," it's over the top sweet.It is not smooth sailing. Christian has a competency hearing coming up, he has unethical relatives, a mother who doesn't understand him, so much prejudice against his "sickness" - but he has Maddy Girl and two friends who stick with him through thick and thin. The bottom line is that we find we have several major conflicts - Christian's disability is the primary conflict, but Maddy's religious beliefs are the secondary conflict constantly vying for first place, which affects the third conflict - she's head over heels in love with Christian. Who wouldn't be? I'm rooting for him all the way, even though one might say the life he led previous to the stroke, was not the thing at all. The results of that life come back to bite him on the butt big time and he nearly loses his Maddy Girl.Truth: I've got about 1800 books on my Kindle with approximately 1300 of that number being historical romance novels - many authored by the best of the best. Having said that, this book is probably among the top 5 and perhaps the #1 of all those romance novels - at least that's how I'm feeling at the moment.
Ive just started to get into regency romances and have read several "classics" from different 'best of lists'. I noticed this novel came up on several lists and decided to give it a read. It is by far superior to all I've read thus far. It was heart-pounding, beautifully written and now one of my instant favorites. The two main protagonists are so thoughtfully and thoroughly crafted. Although the heroine frustrates me in the second half of the book and I sometimes don't quite understand her, I think the hero is masterfully crafted. Some reviewers who gave this less than five stars complained that it was hard to read - that's the point. The novel moves very quickly from her (Maddy's) perspective to his (Christian's), but it is in Christian's perspective; one that is seriously disabled by stroke, who has a hard time hearing, understanding and articulating language, where we see the author's true gift for prose. The reader is MEANT to be as frustrated as the hero in understanding what others are saying. We are allowed to see into the depth of his mind and his consciousness. We are suppose to struggle to understand, just as he does. It takes us to another level of reading that I have really not seen in other authors. Especially in this genre. This was far beyond some other historical romances and I would put it up there (maybe not equal, but not far behind) to other classics, such as Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre). My only complaint would when the plot turns close to the end **spoiler** where Maddy writes her letter and agrees to have it published. After coming to Christian's defense so many times and staying by him so he would not be embarrassed, I could see her wishing to leave, but would not see how could she come to shame him - even if she is herself ashamed. That part seemed out of character - but it also led to such a heart wrenching confrontation in the Quaker Meeting House - something that was so beautiful, heartbreaking and exquisite that I can't bring myself to give it anything less than five stars. Highly recommend (and I never write reviews, so you know how much I loved it).
Wow....wow..wow. I know, such a lame expression for an amazing book. This book took my emotions to places I've never experienced in reading before.I love Historical Regency romance...I love sexy gorgeous unattainable Dukes, only Dukes !I love strong heroine with depth and character...I love passionate, beautiful non-porno love scenes...This book lived up to its hype of being hailed as "one of the greatest love stories of all time"Loved Christian and his Little thee thou Duchess, Maddy.I truly think this is Laura Kinsales' master piece. I'm 20+ years to the party but ...it just goes out to prove that her wonderful work is timeless. A wonderland beautiful story about redemption, adversity, love and triumphs.I saved so many favorite passages and always come back to them whenever I feel like visiting this story.You don't want to miss this one!

When my doctor suggested I try the FODMAP diet, I was very skeptical. I believed my decades-long IBS pain was too great for a mere diet to alleviate. I looked for a book that explained FODMAPs because I had never heard of them. I wanted a book that was published recently so it had the latest info, explained the science behind the diet (I doubted there was much), had step-by-step instructions (I don't enjoy diets or making up menus) and had easy recipes (I don't like to cook). How lucky I was to find Patsy Catsos' updated book. It felt like Patsy was in the room talking to me. Her book is frank, friendly, supportive and straightforward. She understands the pain and frustration of IBS, and of seeing doctors and taking pills for years but getting little relief. After I read the introduction, I skipped to the back and read the science section because I wasn't going on a diet unless it made scientific sense. Her explanations here and throughout the book are honest and easy to understand. Feeling somewhat less skeptical, I decided to try her 7-day diet, a detailed and varied list of exactly what to eat every meal of every day, including snacks. So much easier than figuring it all out for myself! After that, I was on my way. I used every tool in her book. She has done all the planning and thinking, so there are grocery lists, simple recipe and meal ideas with photos, forms you fill out to chart your progress (that was the most helpful part for me)...everything you need. I don't know how to tell you how shocked I was when this "elimination diet" worked for me. It took perseverance, but I did it, and the low-FODMAP way of eating literally changed my life. No more pain, no more side effects from pills, no more devastating IBS symptoms. I bought new clothes, clothes without expandable waists for all the IBS bloating. I eat most anything I want now, but with a few tweaks that have made me pain-free. Read and follow this book. You will not regret it. Patsy's words will get you through. I hope you have exactly the same success I did.
While I think this could benefit from some more recipes, there are really a lot of great recipes in here and I appreciate the side by side comparison with a "regular" recipe and how to make it low-fodmap. It both helps to reinforce easy substitutions for me, but also allows me to simultaneously make something a little more normal for my family so they get what they need. I really can't recommend this book enough if you're new to eating this way. I sincerely wish I had this book when I first needed to do the elimination. I'm so glad I have this now for when I have a flare up and need to knock it back down again. It can seem so incredibly overwhelming and I know I'm not the only person who walked into a grocery store and nearly cried because I couldn't eat anything. This guide will help you learn what and how you can eat and the pain can and will subside. Eating doesn't have to hurt and be scary.
As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) the latest edition of The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook by Patsy Catsos is a welcome edition to my teaching tools when working with clients with IBS and the low FODMAP diet. I am thrilled to recommend this book to all my clients with IBS who are struggling with symptoms and seeking relief. The book is laid out beautifully with easy to follow recipes and instructions on how to implement the Low FODMAP diet. A great book for beginners as well as seasoned dietitians. This book is my go-to resource for IBS. The authors reference list at the end of the book is extensive. The author has written a book which is clearly backed by science and evidence based nutrition practices.
Excellent! I tried apps, online blogs & research, other books, and all I got was conflicting information. Even on how long the elimination diet should be. It was frustrating & annoying; I had "gone without" the foods I loved for three weeks and still had symptoms. I called a registered dietician who specializes in the GI issues, & she told me to read this book, do the food plan for one week, then call her back. She said if I follow Ms Catsos's one week plan, I will most likely feel better. Ms Catsos explains why the conflicting information, gives seven days of menus, a shopping list for the week and recipes. The recipes are surprisingly good; fortunately there are many great recipes & her plan has flexibility. She teaches how to modify recipes, what foods should be in one's pantry, and how to reintroduce foods. She explains how to customize the plan. She says not to graze & explains why. None of the blogs or books I read said this. That suggestion alone made a huge difference!
I'm a kindle user but I bought the paperback version because I figured I would want to write and highlight the book. I've been having GI issues and my doctor recommended I try this elimination diet (Low FODMAP). I read most of this book on Sunday, grocery shopped, and prepped a few lunches that day. I'm on day 2 and I feel a little bit better. I'm excited to find out what exactly has been making me feel so horrible. This book is very informative. You will want to buy the paperback version so you can write on the pages. :)I'm not really into cooking so I don't know if I will ever try any of the recipes. They look okay though. The sample meals for a week were a helpful guide.

Decent study tool, but has some issues. Some spelling/grammar problems. Layout of topics a little confusing.
I liked how it broke it down into sections pertinent to the areas of testing and that it had a test at the end of each section. Some key info seemed to be missing that I recall learning and that was repeated extensively in my program. I will see how well it reviewed me as I take my test tomorrow.

This is an excellent book to read if you wish to go beyond the initial story of Lucifer who fell from Heaven with a 1/3 of his angels. This was the first angels who fell. So let's see what it says about the first fall of angels that happened in heaven.Revelation 12: 7-9 - And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found anymore in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and the angels were cast out with him.So the book of Revelation discusses the FIRST fall of angels. This fall happened, because when God created man he asked the angels to bow down to man, whom God had created. Now, Lucifer who was the first created angel, the most beautiful angel, and the closest angel to God refused to bow down too man. That is what caused the whole war that started in Heaven.So this FIRST fall, which cast Lucifer and his angels out of heaven, happened due to pride. These angels later on were called the "Nephilim." Research this word on the Internet and see what you find.And to this day, these are the angels that we fight which is spoken of in Ephesians 6:12 - For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.But Theology schools and ministers will only discuss this FIRST fall of angels from heaven.In this book, it discusses the SECOND fall of angels from heaven. This fall happened out of choice, there was no war, and it was done out of lust. So where in the scriptures do you read about the SECOND fall of angels?Genesis 6:1-4 - And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.The above verses discuss the SECOND fall of angels, which were the sons of God, who willingly fell to earth, out of lust for the daughters of men.Now, ministers will say that these sons of God were the sons of Seth who married these daughters of men, because these secret teachings of the church have been held back from the people due to the Early Church Fathers. they called it heretical.What was so wrong with the daughters of men that they could not find men to marry them in their own city?Look at the wording closely. Daughters of men and sons of God. There are two different species being discussed here. What happened to the sons of men? They would seem to go with the daughters of men. If you do research in the Bible you will discover that the sons of God are part of a heavenly host up in heaven. I will show you this in the two below scriptures:Job 1:6 - Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.Job 2:1 - Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.These two verses mentioned above are talking of sons of God who are in the presence of the Lord. They are not average men. They are angels.This was the SECOND fall of angels, who came to the earth willingly, out of the lust for the daughters of men. The daughters of men bore them children and their offspring wee the giants that Genesis 6" 4 is talking about.As the first fallen angels were known as Nephilim, the second fallen angels were known as Watchers or the Grigori. Search Nephilim, Watchers, and Grigori on the Internet and see what you come up with.Lucifer and his angels could not breed and have children, but the sons of God could breed and have children. This is something that has been kept back from man for a long time. This book discusses how all this happened. I did not make up this story. Read the scriptures and research it.The Book of Enoch, which is included in this book also talks about the sons of God who found the daughters of men to be beautiful and took them as wives and they had their offspring. That is why the Book of Enoch was rejected, because the Early Church Fathers did not want to face up to the fact that this had happened.This gives an even deeper meaning for the reason of the flood. It was not all due to men and their sins, although they were very corrupt back then. But God brought the flood because his angels had mated with the daughters of men and created hybrid beings. God had created man, and then these angels came down and mixed the DNA of man with theirs. You can compare this to Star Trek movies and the Prime Directive that they always refer to. That they observe other worlds and species, but they did not get involved with their world or interact with the different species. So the sons of God messed with God's plan for man and his own divine evolution. They broke the Prime Directive. They created hybrid beings. And these son of God taught men all kinds of sin, how to make weapons, and taught them about wars, taught the woman how to find plants and dyes to make up their faces, etc. What the sons of God did was completely corrupt the daughters and the sons of men.So God was in a dilemma. Noah and his tribes were the only righteous beings who had pure human DNA that was not of a hybrid mix. So God made the flood come so that his experiment with man and his own evolution could start all over again. Also, there was another VERY BIG IMPORTANT reason for the flood. God had to ensure that when he had his son, Jesus Christ incarnate on this earth, that there had to be a woman with 100% pure human DNA. She could not be a hybrid.So why this may sound way out there consider this seriously and think about it. It makes you understand even more why the flood happened.So I will try to list it very simply here:FIRST FALLLucifer and his fallen angels (AKA Nephilim)Cast out through a warDue to PrideSECOND FALLSons of God (AKA Watchers or Grigori)Fell willinglyDue to LustDue to this, there is a new way to look at certain words in the Bible because of what happened.OLD TESTAMENT:"The wicked," "the ungodly," "the enemy," "workers of iniquity," "wicked doers," "evildoers," "evil men," "wicked men", "mighty men," "the giant," "sons of the giant," "the unjust," "pagans", "heathen" and, on occasion, even "sinners" are referring to the WATCHERS, who were the second set of angels to fall. These wee who King David was always calling out to God in Psalms to deliver him from them.NEW TESTAMENT"Serpents," "generation of vipers," "princes of this world," "rulers [originators] of the darkness of this world," and the singular "Wicked One" or "Evil One" are the WATCHERS that Jesus was referring to. After the flood, some of them still survived.When they used these epithets, the heroes of the Bible were not talking about children of the Light gone astray. No, when you read these terms you can be certain that the prophets and patriarchs, the Lord's anointed, and Christ himself were specifically denouncing the inbred generation of the seed that was cast out and godless - the Watchers and their progeny, and the Nephilim, easily mistaken for the latter.They knew them well - by hand-to-hand combat or the challenge of the Light and Darkness heart-to-heart. These renegades were a law unto themselves, and "every imagination of their hearts," as God and the council of his sons would determine, "was evil" - manufacturing a synthetic society of synthetic people - continually. In fact, it was God's judgment that the wickedness of their hearts and their works was so terrible that they must be utterly destroyed in the Flood.I will end this from a verse taken out of "The Jerusalem Bible," which also speaks of the Nephilim and the sons of God all being together on the earth at the same time back in that period.Genesis 6:4 - The Nephilim were on the earth at that time (and even afterwards) when the sons of God resorted to the daughters of man, and had children by them. Information on the fallen angels is not everyone. If you do not have an opened mind this book may not be for you. The author includes 105 chapters of the Book of Enoch, and excerpts from the Book of Jubilees within these 500 pages and provides Biblical parallel scriptures. However, this author's translation of the Book of Enoch is watered down slightly from R.H. Charles' version; however, her material is greatly cited, including many scriptural passages. She does appear to have a thorough understanding of the forbidden knowledge regarding Enoch and the fallen angels and gives us a summary and introduction in the beginning. She also gives us questions to ponder and research, if we choose. The author never suggests that this is the way we all should think or believe. Although it is 500 pages, it is an easy read. A book you can refer back to if need be. But this book is not for people who have been conditioned to believe the Bible is the only source/book in the world worth gaining information and knowledge from. It is for those who believe that there is more to the Bible than what has been written within its pages.

I have got this book and only started to read it...and as I was expecting it to be is a very well detailed and interesting piece of documentation. It is a required taste of reading anyway, it is good if you are interested in finding out about all the cover ups, conspiracies, changes of the scripts of the bible as a great way to brainwash the human kind with lies and false interpratations of the original texts, and also all the evil things done by most of the very well known clerical sects..eg ( Catholich and Jewish etc. ) . This book is a used copy but it arrived in phenomenal conditions and the delivery times were very well respected...over all, 5 stars...i am very happy with it.

Alexander Newman, P.E., is principal structural engineer with Maguire Group, Inc., a national architectural, engineering and planning firm, in Foxborough, Massachusetts. This book has useful practical advise for any structural engineer involved building renovation projects. There aren't many books like this one...in fact, I can't think of one other. It contains a wealth of examples and approaches. There is also a lot of useful historical information, such as the history of cast iron making, steel fabrication, concrete, reinforcing....This is the second book by Alexander Newman that I've read. He is a unique individual in the world of structural engineering. I think this guy could have easily become an academic - but, he's down in the trenches with the rest of us working on real world projects. He can write well and obviously has a wealth of experience..
This is the best book I know of on the topic of structural renovation of buildings. Though probably no book could answer every question you might have, the 800+ pages of this book will answer most of them.The author, Alexander Newman, is clearly an experienced expert, so this book is authoritative and has a very practical orientation, with a straightforward writing style, both basic and specialized information on a wide variety of topics, and plenty of helpful illustrations of details which can be used on your projects.I should also add that much of the information in this book is directly relevant to structures other than buildings, so don't miss out on this book if you're involved in renovation of other types of structures.Highly recommended to anyone involved in structural renovation, and worth every penny.
It's a good and informative book. I think most materials are directly or indirectly related to the author experienced. But if you are looking a book which explained example thru calculation and design problems regarding renovation, this book is mostly " an explanation" book, not a design "calculation" one.
Detailed book on many aspects of renovation. Detailed examples, well explained with solid diagrams. Has both the math to some of the more technical issues as well as good explanations of concepts.
I have had to design and manage a number of structural rehabilitations; I wish I would have had this book ten years ago. It is an excellent reference for engineers with both limited and extensive experience in structural retrofitting and rehabilitation.

A comprehensive book but with some strange omissions: very little on foundations or restrained brickwork. Also, the section on FRPs looks like it came straight out of a contractor's brochure. But these don't really detract that much. Strongly recommended.

This book shows a large variety of different stitches to try with written and chart instructions. I think it is more for intermediate Tunisian crochet rather than beginner. It does have instructions for the basic stitches, but not as detailed as I have seen in other books.
Very informative with lots of textures to choose from Easy to understand (first time I've tried Tunisian or Afghan stitch, even thought I've crocheted for 40+ years). Now to get a set of longer hooks to make men's sweaters, jackets and cardigans, definitely a highly ignored genre/field in crochet. Men's patterns are few and far between and this book (and vol. 1) are going to help me try to remedy that.
I purchased both Volume 1 and 2. Beautiful well-made books. I especially like that they include both charts and written directions.
