Very easy reading and no formulas cloud the reader. I highly recommend this book for the pay person who wants to learn about modern cosmology.
Physics explained for the average person. Nice historical background info included, Very interesting and enjoyable reading. Personally, I would recommend.
Reading by this book, I found myself arguing against the arguments brought forth in some of the chapters, but it was the final chapter on cosmology that I 'got it', what the author was trying to get at, the true state-of-mind one should have as a scientist or researcher. My only criticism was the delving into the personal histories of the contributing scholars and scientists in each topical chapter (much I already knew from reading other scientific concepts books), but I understand why the author included them.All in all, a most enjoyable read.
Over the years I have followed the evolution of cosmology from Fred Hoyle's "continuous creation" theory until the present. As observation ability and very smart modern thinkers has dramatically to allowed new theories to develop and old ones to fade to quaint ideas, there seems to no upper limit to completely understanding how our universe started and when and if it will end - and what all it consists of. Stuart Clark offers a refreshing summary of what we think we know now and the long history of our learning to parent day concepts. Some of the material in this book requires a bit more reading to wrap your mind around such concepts as parallel universes but for the most part, current (and past) theories are well explained for even the casual reader without a foundation in physics and cosmology.A sprinkle of humor here and there adds to the enjoyment as you journey through a fascinating history of early far thinking people that, based on then-available knowledge and observations, came up with reasonably sound ideas of our physical universe. Modern science continues to mold our knowledge as more discoveries are made and more mysteries (e.g., dark matter and dark matter) portend further excitement ahead. Stuart Clark has written a fine piece to explain where we have been and where to aim next. Great reading. I hope to see future offerings by Mr. Clark.

This is wonderful book for both children and their parents. The cartoon animals are hilarious ; Before you know it, you will know all sorts of pertinent facts about every President including his personal statistics, personal facts, his accomplishments and the poetry to introduce each one is amazing, i.e:. "As animal lovers, The Clevelands accrued, so many pets, Their house was a zoo! Foxhounds and dachshunds, Ran all around, Chasing wild rabbits all over the grounds."
Combines history and pets – with a little poetry thrown in. Provides the opportunity for students to choose a president to learn a little more about (they are more interesting once kids know they had pets) and write a poem about their own pets or the pet they would want to live with them in the White House when they become president. Great tool.
This is a fun book, with not only information about the animals at the White House, but a few interesting facts thrown in as well. My son and I are studying the presidents this summer. To make the study fun, we are learning about the president's pets, their children and what they liked to eat. Learning about a president's accomplishments is wonderful, but books like this help to make the presidents more "human" and more memorable. I recommend this book.
Another book that is great for short car rides! I keep a box of books in the car and my granddaughter loves this book, not only for its random and interesting info, but because she can get "complete" info in a short ride. History with a twist. Fun book.

So...disclaimer, I wanted to KEEP this book for myself! I was expecting to only learn about the presidential pets, but to my surprise it gave a lot more info about them. The book included a short story and many facts about the presidency along with a caricature. My niece, no I didn't keep the book, loved the book and wanted me to read about the different presidents according to their interesting pets.
My daughter took this book out from her school library. We loved it so much that we bought a copy! This is one of those books that you could read over and over. There is a page for each president that features a funny poem, interesting facts, and great pictures.
Alot of interesting little facts. Enjoyed the book. Plan to pass it on the the younger ones in the family. Great kids book. B

This third book was AWESOME. By far my favorite in the series so far! Kaderin was so cool and badass and it was exciting watching her participate in the Hie doing all that crazy stuff for points. And I really loved Sebastian too!! I felt for the guy and liked that he loved Kaderin exactly the way she was and even helped her do all those crazy obstacles in the competition to be supportive.Also, the whole Hie competition thing?? SO FUN TO WATCH. All those mythical creatures running around trying to kill each other and fighting for random stuff made this super exciting. I loved it!It’s also starting to become fun for me to guess who the next books are going to be about too. Regin started talking about her true love who keeps getting reincarnated for her and I thought Well, there’s one. This is one of my favorite stories, because of Sebastian, who I loved. Kaderin the heroine is sent to kill him . Sebastian is ready to die as he is lonely and tired of being a vampire, which he never asked for or wanted to be. Then he discovers that she is his bride he will do anything to make her his. Kaderin realizes that she is his bride as well but flees from him. Vampires are her greatest enemy for many reasons including they killed her sisters. Kaderin competes in a yearly contest with prize being something that she wants more than anything else in the world. Sebastian participates for and with her, even though she still wants nothing to do with him.Sebastian was great. He immediately falls in love with his bride and for a man who has always been shy and timid around women, lets his alpha come out, which I enjoyed reading about. I really liked that he was not a manhoe. He had only two sexual experiences before Kederin and they were very brief and terrible. Kaderin had her emotions stolen from her for years feels because of him and Sebastian comes alive. The two get their desire back at the same time when they met and the chemistry between the two is sizzling. The sex scenes and even the make out scenes are hot. I loved most of the books in this series but this was my favorite, because of Sebastian.

Written during the First World War, March 1915, this report on alleged atrocities by Austro-Hungarian armed forces is a pro-Serbian propaganda pamphlet. The author, R.A. Reiss, lacks verifiable proofs but in the introduction signs himself as "obedient servant" to the Prime Minister of Serbia. He mentions documents that the Serbian authorities made available to him but offers no corroboration from the other side. Thus the conditions for an objective and believable appraisal of atrocities are not presented. With these shortcomings the book does not contribute to a better understanding the war in Serbia.
Well documented book that relies on official historical documents. Gives excellent view on the world order in and during WWI.
Warning: not an easy read. A very accurate description of war crimes commited by the Austro-Hungarian army again Serbian civilians and army alike, including the use of prohibited expanding bullets Dr RA Reiss, was on hand to record Austro-Hungarian war crimes in Serbia. According to Reiss imperial soldiers stated in 1915 that they received official orders to massacre Serb civilians and that "everything was permissible". Soldiers invaded villages and rounded up unarmed men, women and children.They were either shot dead, bayoneted to death or hanged… Women were sent up to the front lines and mass-raped. The inhabitants of whole villages were taken as hostages and humiliated and tortured This was all well documented at the time by the western press after and caused mass outrage.Serbia's losses in the Great War were greater, proportionately, than any other nation: 62.5 per cent of Serbian males aged between 15 and 55 died between 1914 and 1918. Research by Russian demographer Boris Urlanis suggests 728,000 Serbian wartime deaths, of which just 278,000 were military.

Generally, I am not a fan of stories in which a plucky heroine (or hero), cheerfully overcomes adversity to live happily ever after, especially, when they deal with health issues. All those movies to the contrary, you don't wake up from surgery with a smile on your lips and a song in your heart. It's more bile in your throat and the sense of being locked in a looney bin. I know from experience.But from the moment Maureen O'Neill Hooker described the aftermath of surgery, the side effects of drugs (no delicate fainting spells but massive weight gain and bizarre hallucinations), I knew this was more than a true story - it was a real one. Her style is not a linear "and then I did this" but a fever dream of events, coming in and out of focus. She doesn't let us get lost, however. We are with her through her hardships, to the, well, pretty happy ending. She doesn't forget to find and thank the family of the heart donor who saved her life, by founding a scholarship in her honor.Well done. Thanks, Maureen.
This book is more than a book about what it is like to have a heart transplant. I was enthralled throughout. I didn't expect to have this book motivate me and touch me so much. It's far more than a book about a health issue, though I will say that the medical aspects of a heart transplant are incredible. I had no idea that having a different person's heart inside of you would be unlike anything the rest of us will ever imagine. I am so impressed with the families mentioned in the book. This is not just a book for those who have health issues. Anyone would find this book captivating and it may just change how you look at things and live your life. God works in mysterious ways. Great read.

The author gives a reader access to the medical experience but most importantly to the patient's inner world of anger, fear and ultimately hope. Anyone who has faced medical challenges will relate to this book and actually is required read by ALL since Maureen Hooker reminds us that life and living are about what really matters. Gratitude and living in the moment are the cornerstones of this book.
What comes to mind reading Maureen's account of her heart transplant are her amazing courage, resilience and strength of character and most of all her deep faith.I laughed and I cried, I was deeply touched by her experience, supporting her scholarship fund is only a small gesture on my part.Maureen is a gifted writer, I hope she is working on another book
This was a good read. It gave me insights to what it's like for a person who has had a heart transplant. The author even had some humor in the book which made it more human. I would recommend this book to anyone.
An exceptional accounting of the celebrations, agonies and hard work that go into being a heart transplant recipient. It is a must read! Thank you Maureen Hooker for writing and acknowlegding Shelly's Heart!
