I was in the mood for a good, wholesome, feel-good love story. Every once in a while Sparks delivers. The last book of his I picked up, "The Longest Ride" was one of those feel goody types so I had high hopes for this one. The first couple chapters of "The Best of Me" were ok...just Ok. After the first few chapters the story quickly went downhill. I personally felt it was confusing the way it introduced new character viewpoints each chapter. Sometimes this can work in the author's favor but in this case we never really got to know any characters in depth.Also, without giving too much away I felt storylines were recycled from other well known novels of his - i.e., parents don't approve of leading lady's boyfriend, fight ensues, couple breaks up, leading lady moves on (but not entirely), long separation & then reunion, mother of leading lady shows up at house to talk some sense into leading lady (but maybe to encourage her to follow her own path)....sounding familiar? *cough*The Notebook*cough*.Semi-Spoiler Alert!!No happy ending here...not even a semi-happy ending where they grow old and die together. The ending to this story was rushed and sadly predictable and left a lot to be desired. "Best of Me" was definitely not Nicholas Sparks best work. I'm surprised by how many 4 and 5 stars it received.
Nicholas Sparks never disappoints. This is a poignant story about chances: random chances, lost chances, and second chances. A story of families, relationships, regrets and redemption. About once-in-a-lifetime, enduring love; lost, found, denied, and eventually recaptured. It's a story of honor, duty, responsibility, purpose, selflessness, and fate. This book will make you fall in love; will break your heart, will make you cry, and just maybe, it might even bring a little smile to your heart at the end. What more could you ask for! This is "the best of" Nicholas sparks!
I like to read a Sparks novel occasionally as a break from more serious literature. They seem like well written romances with good plots and characters. However, the endings have become predictable and never 100% happy. From the beginning of this book, I kept thinking about how it would end and if someone would get killed.Dawson and Amanda had been high school sweethearts even though they came from "opposite sides of the tracks" in Oriental, NC. They split up due to pressures by her parents. She ended up married to a dentist and they had children. Dawson went to prison for four years for accidentally killing the town's doctor when driving a vehicle. Later he worked on offshore rigs in the Gulf.Dawson and Amanda met up again over 20 years later when Tuck a mutual friend and father figure in Oriental died. His will requested that they scatter his ashes at a cottage that had been owned by him and his deceased wife. Two of Dawson's cousins hated him and made multiple attempts on his life.At some point the ending became very predictable and typical of Sparks. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it. At least up to the predictable ending.
If you ever had a first love that got away, this is the book. It was a real page turner. It brought out a range of emotions, including tears. I really enjoyed this book. I read reviews where people said it was predictable. Maybe so at times, but I say it is a true romantic story. He wrote it with other characters involved in the story, and left us to fill in the details of their lovemaking. He tells a story, not just focusing on jumping in and out of bed. I found this very refreshing. I've read 2 more books by him since this read. I've found an author who actually tells a story.At first I thought I knew how the ending would be, but boy was I wrong. A funeral brings two high school lovers back together, but only for a short time. An old man's last wishes, a bar fight, car accident, and a one in a million chance of getting a transplant will keep you reading this book untill the very end.I'm not a big romance novel fan, but I tend to find myself enjoying Nicholas Sparks books anyway. I love how his stories are really well developed and thought-provoking, rather than just revolving around the physical aspects of love as many other romance novels do. "The Best of Me" had to be one of Nicholas Sparks' best novels yet. Yes, the basic theme is one that's been done over and over again - two high school sweethearts having to let go because real life interferes, and then running into each other again years later. But this story is so much more than that. You find yourself really sympathizing with the characters and understanding how difficult their situations are. Nicholas Sparks captures and holds your attention until the very end in this book, and this story is one that I'm sure will stick with me for a long time.The Best of Me follows the struggles of Amanda as she must decide between her imperfect family and her first love, Dawson. Her decision is heart-wrenching, and the events that ensue will inevitably bring tears to your eyes. Amanda discovers what really matters in life, and Dawson is able to truly give the best of himself to Amanda in a shocking manner.In true Nicholas Sparks fashion, The Best of Me is simultaneously heart-warming, melancholy, and suspenseful. How Dawson gives life to Amanda is sure to change your view on what is important to you.
It was corny and unrealistic. His books have gone from romantic to nauseating over the years and this is no exception. Amanda is childish. So she has problems in her marriage, who doesn't? So as soon as she sees her first love runs into his arms. And Dawson, never dated, had sex ever again because he never got over Amanda. Seriously?! Finished it because I did purchase it but oh no. What a waste!!!

I enjoyed this book. I read the last several chapters without pause. However, I understand those who had trouble with it. It is very... Deliberate.One might even venture to say much of it is over-stated - and in fact, Shade comments on the repetition in one of those later chapters. The carefulness is the comfort part of this hurt/comfort trope, and it works well, but it will read as tedious to some. That's fine - not every book is for every reader. There's nothing wrong with that.I generally prefer a faster-paced story. The cause of Jason's damage is never overtly stated, and IMHO it doesn't tie in all that well with the acceptance of AI Companions, and AI personhood in general; it wasn't necessary for the romance. (But it could have been dropped in here and there had there been less verbose carefulness. And I would have loved it in that case.)
I loved the slow burn in this book he didn't rush up until the end. The book was written really well in my opinion, however I really wanted another 150 to 200 pages and I think he could have. I really want to read about a lot of Jason's firsts and felt a little cheated at the end. Over all it was a great book hit a lot of my favorites just wish it was longer! I wanted more from the three.
I can't remember the last time I was actually able to read through a book without much difficulty. I usually get distracted part way through, but this book had my full attention from the moment I started to read it and I had a really hard time even putting it down for 5-10 minutes.I love the subject matter that this book deals with, and I really appreciate how well each character has been crafted and written about. I found myself getting rather attached to each character and feeling on the edge of my seat as the story progressed.This book is definitely one that I am going to read and re-read on a regular basis. It deals with a very important topic that so many people live with, and it doesn't downplay or make light of it, but it deals with it in a very relatable way. It feels like a warm, comforting hug while reading and it is such a fantastic read. I honestly can't say enough good things about it and I would 120% love to read more books by this author.
Woah. So much here. Kept my mind ticking while I read it, and my heart hoping for their healing, quite aside from whether or not their partnership became sexual or not. Full of thoughts, full of feelings. I push this book on everyone I can.
I bought this book because I'm an instant sucker for trauma recovery and ai/robots, so I was pretty much destined to love it. Wayne has such an uncomplicated, joyful way of writing that really charmed me from the first page. My only complaint about this book is that I wish it had been longer--I wasn't ready to end it! I could easily read three or four more books about these characters.
A sweet and gentle story of a traumatized human, an equally traumatized AI, and an AI with a chronic need to help people helping each other with recovery and falling in love along the way.
I loved this book - full of beautiful characters and a rich world. The relationship was so beautiful to watch unfold. I highly recommend it!
Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted my copy of this book. I have to admit, when I read the blurb for this book, I had no idea what AI meant, it did not click. Once it's made clear, very early on?? Well, now it made total sense! Jason is suffering from PTSD and Chase and Shade are his AI companions to help with that. But not only Jason suffers, Shade does too and its left to Chase to keep everyone together. Very quickly, you lose the fact that Chase and Shade are, for want of a better word, robots. They feel as much as humans do, they want all the same things. The fact that we lose that, is a testament to the skill of the author, it really is. Just as Jason suffers from his torture, Shade suffers from the modifications made to him against his wishes. Shade may NEVER fully recover, but being around Jason, broken though he is, begins to bring Shade out of his trauma, just as Shade and Chase bring Jason out of his. I have a soft spot for 3 way relationship, especially if they are hot and heavy. This book is NOT hot and heavy. This book is not about that. this book is EMOTIONALLY heavy, for all three men. You feel for both Shade and Jason every time something sets them off, something triggers for them. And you feel for Chase, trying to keep them all together. And you feel it, right here in your heart when Jason finally begins to let Chase and Shade in. There has been a huge amount of research into PTSD for this book. You can't get the depth of felling and emotion across without a massive amount of work. Very VERY well done, Aidan Wayne! I haven't read anything by Wayne before, but the author is on my hit list now! 5 stars **same worded review will appear elsewhere**

Overall, it's helpful, recent, and inexpensive. It suffers from being from a single perspective. For instance, she recommends avoiding the JR pass exchange at the airport because of long lines, whereas I went arrived in the middle of the day and there was essentially no line. But even recommending it in the first place probably helped me out. There are some good itineraries, good food recommendations, good activities, certainly at least as a starting point. It gave me at least enough to go on to feel confident about going to a strange land.
I felt lost and anxious about planning a trip to Japan for the first time. Then I read this book and was able to form an itinerary based on the places and suggestions found in the book. Looking forward to my trip now without the anxiety.
Short and sweet travelguide, with a lot of tips and recommendations! From the best food to the nicest shrines - everything is mentioned in this guide. I really liked the fact that even everyday things like visiting a japanese toilet are explained (even with the essential kanji, so we can easily find out, where the women‘s bathroom is). The author even included a free packing list and a two week itinerary.Overall it‘s a nice and handy guide to use.

I love this book and the game takes a while to get into and learning all the rules but once you know most of it, it plays really fluent and is so much fun!
Few role playing games capture the feel of their genre perfectly in both feel and game mechanics. Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium is such a superb game, that it has endured six editions and over 20 years publication. At its core is the Cthulhu Mythos created by master Howard Philips Lovecraft who wove stories based around a pantheon of alien gods, powerful and diabolic beings whose merest incarnation would shatter the tenuous grip we have on our `mundane' world where things like night gaunts or shantaks are minor horrors compared to Yog-Sothoth, Azathoth or Great Cthulhu himself. Around these beings are often cults- dangerous underground societies who want nothing more than to see their fabled masters arise from ages past and walk the Earth again.At it's core Call of Cthulhu is a rather mechanically simple game and characters are easy to put together so long as care as taken to understand what skills are needed with regard to the kind of game the Keeper is planning to run. Once your character is complete, make another one and don't get attached to either of them. Seriously, played smartly, most characters can and will survive physically in tact, mentally, however is another story. As the game progresses and as more and more elements of the Mythos are revealed, characters begin to have their sanity chipped away at. If they are strong (and lucky), they can overcome these lurkers in the darkness and restore some of their lost sanity.Characters can also learn magic from a vast list of spells, some are good, most are not as good. It's important to know how to bind a dimensional shambler before you summon one. Spells and magic items can be the focus of adventures as characters race to prevent a cult from obtaining an artifact that will be used in a ritual to summon Cthugha for weenie roast in Central Park one warm summer night.The beauty of Call of Cthulhu, aside from it's relative cheapness compared to other games (you only need the main source book to begin play), is that it can cover very nearly any era-1890's, 1920's (Lovecraft's era), and the present day, and good Keepers will go to some lengths to make sure their players understand what is and is not possible in the various time lines. Plus there are numerous web sites that deal with Call of Cthulhu and offer a host of resources for players and Keepers alike. It's easy to find historical information based on almost any location in the world that a Keeper may plan to run his or her campaign.Most importantly is the mood of the game itself. I've played Call of Cthulhu for fifteen years and most of the games have had great suspense, excitement, and were a lot of fun. I've played it by candle light in the dead of winter, something that adds so much to the atmosphere. Good keepers can build suspense that, like a good novel, will make your skin crawl with a healthy dose of other-worldly fear. It is also important to remember that Call of Cthulhu isn't a meat grinder that chews up and spits out characters as fast as the players can roll them up. As an alternative to swords and sorcery or lightsabers and blasters, Call of Cthulhu is an excellent RPG. Additionally, I highly recommend the works of H.P. Lovecraft as source material, plus their darn good reads.
Doesn't it tell you something, that *every* review for this edition of this book gives it 5 stars? (Some of the out-of-print editions have reviews here too.) And let's face it, us RPG enthusiasts are not the sort of folks to shy away from criticizing.Some people will say the Basic Roleplaying rule-set is outdated. It's true that games like Unknown Armies and Godlike are pretty cool, and I know people who are using those rules for their CoC games. But just try introducing a newcomer to those rules, or getting someone who's only played D&D before to convert. They get dizzy, I tell you. Nope, for a simple, elegant rule-set that just about anyone can grasp right off the bat, Call of Cthulhu's Basic Roleplaying has still got it, after more than 20 years. The rules fade into the background, where they belong.And unlike other games with their multivolume core rulebooks and endless splatbooks that you *need* if you want a fully fleshed-out campaign, everything you really need is right there in this one rulebook. Heck, every time Chaosium does a new edition, they comb all the supplements for spells, monsters, skills, and so on, and add them into the new edition--to save you time and money! Chaosium even printed the entire short story, "The Call of Cthulhu," in this edition, so newbies can get a taste of what it's all about.If you've got an older edition of CoC, you don't need to buy this one--the rule changes are quite minor. Unlike D&D, a new edition doesn't make everything you already know obsolete--"editions" of CoC are back-compatible with older editions and old supplements. Chaosium does new editions to keep the book in print and to make it a little better every time, not to force the fans to spend money. I bought it because my old book was getting worn out, and I wanted a more durable hardcover edition. Now I can loan out the old book to players. But I'm really happy with the little changes, and it's nice to have some of the information that used to be in adventures and supplements all gathered together in one book.

This is not a bad book for young readers trying to learn Chinese, given the poor selection of bilingual books available online. The content is not particularly exciting but the illustrations are clear and it does what it set out to do (teach colors). Please note the characters are traditional and there is pinyin in the back of the book but not on the pages themselves. This makes it more suitable for older children with a lot of Chinese under their belt and/or native Chinese speakers learning English.
I really enjoy reading this series of books to my daughter. I like the art work and simple themes of each story, like colors or numbers. It might be harder to read the Chinese if you don't know any, only because characters and pronunciation can be difficult to learn on your own. I learned Chinese as my second language though so having the pronunciation of all the characters in the back is helpful for me as a reference. I wish I could find more series like this!
This book only has chinese characters and english translation. It does not have the chinese phonetic pronunciation.
This is my grandson's favorite book. He always grabs it and give it to me and then climbs up on my lap. We read the book and count the bunnies! He is 21 months old.

Cute board book little book, but it was bent, a little disappointing.
I wish the colors were more vibrant so that it is clear what blue looks like.The last page has the phonetics to match the Chinese characters, which really helped with the reading.
Good book, and it will work for me. Some of the words are not particularly useful Chinese words for a learning speaker and reader (i.e. honeysuckle and peony). I got it as a book to teach my kids some color words and maybe a few object names. It is fine for the color words. There are just more useful object names to learn in my opinion than some of the ones used in the book.

A Moonless, Starless Sky is a thoughtfully written book, capturing the perspectives of people whose stories needed to be told but hadn’t yet been brought into the light. Alexis Okeowo uncovers the fascinating and unique experiences of those combating extremism, terror, racism, and/or misogyny in four African countries. These include a Ugandan woman abducted by the LRA who marries the former child soldier who raped her; an activist in Mauritania who seeks to bring visibility to and demolish the practice of slavery in his country; a man in Nigeria who risks his life leading a local militia to combat Boko Haram; and a young woman who receives death threats from Al-Shabaab for playing basketball in Somalia. A talented journalist, Okeowo goes beyond the word and stylistic limits of the article to delve much deeper into the lives of the people featured in her book, often to her own emotional detriment. The book is told in two sets of four chapters. The first four chapters end with very beautifully written cliffhangers that leave the reader yearning to learn about the fates of the people whose stories have been captured. The second set provides some semblance of resolution, but these are real people who continue to lead their lives in very precarious and unpredictable circumstances.The book is very accessible for those who haven’t read much about Africa and is a great entry point for those who would like to learn more about a diverse set of countries filled with stories of tragedy, struggle, bravery, and, ultimately, hope. Thanks to Alexis Okeowo for her courage in locating and unveiling some of these stories and for presenting them in such a meaningful way.
For some reason the first 50 or 60 pages of this book went really fast for me. I was totally in to the stories about each of the individuals Okeowo writes about. Then, I’m not sure what happened, the book became a bit of a chore to finish. First, parts of it seemed repetitive. Second, oddly enough I felt like I didn’t care (as much as I should have) about the people in the book. Of course I cared about them in that what they’ve been through is horrible, unjust, unfair, and so supremely wrong there are just no words. So, I cared, but I didn’t identify, which I think is really what the author wanted for the readers of this book, ie, to see themselves in the people of this book.
There are no mutants here, just ordinary humans who have made choices to deny easy victory to forces seeking to destroy them. And the way that Ms. Okeowo approaches them and tells their stories is quite simply humane. Their stories are compelling, but not embellished. This is all a non-fiction reader could want.
Simply transformative. Alexis lifts up the lives and narratives of people that nearly all other journalists overlook, and in so doing restores a part of our humanity we weren't even aware that we lost. Completely breathtaking.
An interesting look at the intimate lives of those who have endured years of turmoil plus historical facts about the evolution of the political environment.
Well written, touching stories of people in Africa confronting injustice. I travel to Rwanda each year to visit friends. I found this book interesting and informative.
