Review
"A valuable contribution to our understanding of the Cold War and those who became victims of the national security state. It highlights well, and in a very readable form, the origins and continuity of the gay rights movement which are located in the fight against the federal government''s anti-gay policies."—H-Net Reviews in the Humanities and Social Sciences --(H-Net Reviews in the Humanities and Social Sciences ) "Dr. Johnson has provided today''s generation with disturbing details of the maltreatment that U.S. security agents visited upon thousnads of loyal American citizens, people who endured vile campaigns against their well-being, conducted by their own government. The Lavender Scare has great current significance as a work of history because it exposes the anti-gay fear-mongering that Republicans initiated during the Cold War Era....a stellar work, one of the most important published gay histories there is."—Gay Today (Raj Ayyar Gay Today )"A gripping study of sanctioned homophobia in the McCarthy era and a celebration of the stubborn fight by a pre-Stonewall few that ultimately won rights for many, and of a cultural and sexual underground that survived even at the height of an unrelenting homophobia spanning the presidencies of Truman through Nixon."-—Richard Labonte, Book Marks "David Johnson''s engrossing study of the persecution of gays and lesbians during the Cold War, complete with a comprehensive picture of the gay culture that flourished in Washington, is an important addition to a subject all too often ignored."-—Dallas Morning News "The hoary rhetoric about the supposedly treasonous/treacherous nature of homosexuality that the historian David K. Johnson documents in his fine new book can initially strike a reader as amusing. The homophobic fulmination of varoius McCarthy-era senators and representatives he quotes are fatuous, if not ludicrous. But as The Lavender Scare goes on to reveal, the jaw-dropping extent of the federal government''s persecution of its gay and lesbian employees in the ''50s and ''60s turns amusement into rage."—Kevin Riordan, Washington Blade "By demonstrating the extent to which gay history is part of mainstream history, [Johnson] continues the important academic endeavor of bringing the margins to the center."-—Fiona Paton, American Quarterly "The Lavender Scare provides a superb overview of this period in American history. . . . It''s a must-read for gay and lesbian federal employees, and would serve as an excellent text for college or graduate-level courses in history, sociology, political science, or gay studies."—Lawrence Reynods, Gay & Lesbian Review "Keenly observed and elegantly written, with a sense of mystery and suspense indicative of the era, Johnson''s book will reorient scholarship on the Cold War as it models a more complex method for integrating queer community history with economic and political history."—John Howard, GLQ "The Lavender Scare is a very readable and valuable work that clarifies the relationship between the Cold War and national security interests, and those victimized by the need to preserve said security. . . . This work will take its place beside those of George Chauncey and Allen Berube, and every serious student of 20th century American history should own it."—Aaron L. Bachhofer, Archives of Sexuality "What does it say about the historical profession that it has taken nearly 30 more years to tell this story? Fortunately, David K. Johnson has done so with intelligence, sensitivity, and grace. We are all in his debt."—Ellen Schrecker, American Communist History "Johnson''s work assures that we shall never again be able to think about the anticommunist crusade without acknowledging its fierce counterpart that affected the lives of so many people."—Leila J. Rupp, Journal of American History“Fifty years ago, gays ‘confronted a degree of policing and harassment that is almost unimaginable to us today’ and which now is almost entirely forgotten. David K. Johnson’s The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government is a heart-wrenching reminder that homosexuals faced brutal employment discrimination and endless police hostility.”—David J. Garrow, Los Angeles Times"A riveting history of gay-baiting in the McCarthy era"—In These Times (In These Times ) "Johnson''s dazzling social and political history puts the Cold War persecution of gays and lesbians center stage to highlight how the social and cultural anxieties around gender and sexuality dovetailed with the nation''s state-building project in the post-World War II era."—Steve Valocchi, American Journal of Sociology "An important book, one that promises to reorient the historical scholarship on the Cold War." ---Robert J. Corber American Historical Review“By utilizing an impressive array of primary sources and integrating political, social, and cultural history, historian David Johnson provides us with a much needed, in-depth analysis. . . . A valuable contribution to our understanding of the Cold War and those who became victims of the national security state. It corrects certain misconceptions about the targets of McCarthyism to reveal that homosexuals were a unique focus in a parallel witch hunt to those who did not conform to 1950s society and beyond."--Douglas M. Charles, H-Net Reviews “An important work of gay scholarship that proves, once and for all, that the Lavender Scare was not a minor adjunct of the Red Scare, but a major government campaign in its own right. . . . The Lavender Scare is more than a great work of history. It is a cautionary tale.”—Jesse Monteagudo, The Weekly News

From the Inside Flap
The McCarthy era is generally considered the worst period of political repression in recent American history. But while the famous question, "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" resonated in the halls of Congress, security officials were posing another question at least as frequently, if more discreetly: "Information has come to the attention of the Civil Service Commission that you are a homosexual. What comment do you care to make?"Historian David K. Johnson here relates the frightening, untold story of how, during the Cold War, homosexuals were considered as dangerous a threat to national security as Communists. Charges that the Roosevelt and Truman administrations were havens for homosexuals proved a potent political weapon, sparking a "Lavender Scare" more vehement and long-lasting than McCarthy's Red Scare. Relying on newly declassified documents, years of research in the records of the National Archives and the FBI, and interviews with former civil servants, Johnson recreates the vibrant gay subculture that flourished in New Deal-era Washington and takes us inside the security interrogation rooms where thousands of Americans were questioned about their sex lives. The homosexual purges ended promising careers, ruined lives, and pushed many to suicide. But, as Johnson also shows, the purges brought victims together to protest their treatment, helping launch a new civil rights struggle. The Lavender Scare shatters the myth that homosexuality has only recently become a national political issue, changing the way we think about both the McCarthy era and the origins of the gay rights movement. And perhaps just as importantly, this book is a cautionary tale, reminding us of how acts taken by the government in the name of "national security" during the Cold War resulted in the infringement of the civil liberties of thousands of Americans.

I've always been fascinated by the McCarthy era. It always seemed to me that the nation teetered on the brink of totalitarianism for several years during the 1950s. Fortunately, the nation managed to pull itself back from the brink. In The Lavender Scare author David K. Johnson sheds light into the dark corner or the McCarthy era and uncovers a time when the federal government targeted gay and lesbian employees for prosecution and firing because it was believed that simply being gay made then more vulnerable to blackmail by foreign agents. (It doesn't seem to have occurred to the government that a straight married man involved in an affair stood the same risk of blackmail.)Wisconsin Sen. Joe McCarthy often gets credit for starting the "lavender scare" along with the witch hunts seeking to oust current and former Communists from the government. However, as Johnson points out, McCarthy actually had little to do directly with the anti-homosexual purges. But in the mind of the public in the 1950s McCarthy was forever linked with the lavender scare because the public did not see the distinction between the issues of disloyalty posed by Communists and the potential security risks posed by gays and lesbians. The anti-gay purges began in the State Department but soon spread to all federal offices as well as private companies that held government contracts. While Washington, D.C. had a reputation for tolerance before World War II, the post-war years saw that tolerance reversed. Vice officers busted hapless men for as little as making eye contact in bars, in parks and on the street. Law enforcement agencies were only too happy to share their arrest reports with government officials. Gays and lesbians were arrested at private dinner parties and interrogated to identify their friends. When a gay employee was identified, Civil Service investigators were called in for coercive interogations.During the darkest days of the lavender scare many gays and lesbians simply "disappeared." Some moved back to their home towns in the hope their shame wouldn't follow them. Some had to take menial jobs because the careers they had prepared for were forever barred to them. Some chose to end their own lives. And some found a new calling. Among them were Harry Hay, founder of the Mattachine Society in California and Frank Kameny who founded the Mattachine Society of Washington.Kameny especially comes across as a hero. Once an astronomer who was working under a government contract, when rumors of his homosexuality began to spread he was called Washington and fired. He began a court fight that ultimately proved futile, but along they way he gained the courage to come out as a gay man and speak publicly about the devastation of the government's anti-gay purges.I've encountered references to the anti-gay purges in various histories of the time that I read. Lavender Scare is the first book I've ever read to deal specifically with the subject. It seems well researched and a work of solid scholarship in addition to being a very readable book.
I am reviewing this book based on the Kindle version. The only problem i have with the Kindle version is that the footnotes, which in a book like this are very important, are not directly accessible as with other Kindle books. I can see the footnote number, but cannot click on the number to get to the actual note. I hope the producers of this book will correct this problem. As for the content, this well written book was an eye opener for me. The author lays out the events in a manner that makes clear how the homosexual panic took hold as a tool for the Republicans wanting to oust a Democratic president and cast aspersions on the New Deal. It also reveals how some in the press used it as a means to improve their circulation by playing on the public's fear of the gay/lesbian "other". When i was taught about the McCarthy era there was NO information provided about the attack on the gay/lesbian community. This book is the only one to bring this dark period of hysteria into the cold light of day where i hope we will learn some important lessons. This book and Making Gay History are the two books i recommend to friends who want to learn about LGBT history. The two books are complements in that The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.(Book review): An article from: The Historian covers in detail one period of LGBT history that has been all but lost, yet, it was important in driving the events presented in Making Gay History far more than the Stonewall incident. Both make great gifts and recently my book club decided to make The Lavender Scare our monthly read.I gave this only four stars because the Kindle footnotes are not live. Given the importance of the footnotes, live notes are important because they provide easy access to the footnotes in a way that is conducive to maintaining reading flow. Without the live footnotes i've been forced to use a second kindle to maintain access to the foot notes. Should the authors release a version with live footnotes i will change my review to 5 stars.
I remember growing up and reading in the newspaper of McCarthyism in full swing. The US government, especially the State Department, was exceptionally hostile to gays. There were witch hunts. Being gay was equalled with being communist, and this was during the Cold War. People lost their jobs, guys killed themselves when outed, these were terrible un-accepting times for gays. It's hard to comprehend how much things have changed for the better. Fascinating history, well-written.
I got my degree in history, and yet somehow I managed to make it until my senior year before I even discovered that this event happened. The Red Scare is a well-known period, but this book illuminated another side of it that is severely overlooked in most courses, lectures, books and documentaries. I would have to rate the book highly just for bringing it to light, but the fact that it's well-written is a nice bonus, too.
Detailed accounting backed by first hand accounts, newspaper articles of the day, the Congressional Record including previously unavailable access to the reports of the Hovey Commission of the horrors of the dark ages for gay people in the U.S.A. A must read for any one who wants to know the depths of depravity that the government is capable of descending in persecution of minorities ... sexual, gender and racial.
This book relays the hidden history of persecution against American citizens for their personal lives. Most don’t realize how systematic and pervasive this was.
This not only speaks about what happened during this time and hell that was the lives of many GLBT, but it also explains how this became a Cold War witch hunt. Loyal American citizens were stripped of everything even on the suspicion of being gay. Excellent source for writing a paper with lots of primary source interviews you can't find elsewhere.

From the Foreword: "In From Computer to Brain: Foundations of Computational Neuroscience, William W. Lytton provides a gentle but rigorous introduction to the art of modeling neurons and neural systems. It is an accessible entry to the methods and approaches used to model the brain at many different levels, ranging from synapses and dendrites to neurons and neural circuits. This book gives a balanced view of the wide range of modeling techniques that are available in a way that is accessible to a wide audience. This is a book that will bring a smile to your face as well as inspire your imagination." -- Terrence J. I really enjoyed reading this book - it reads easily, and it is often actually fun to read. That being said, this book was not entirely what I expected. I learned a lot about how computers operate, artificial neural networks, and how the abstract concepts of neural networks approximate (or fail to approximate) the biological reality. Other than simple linear algebra-based artificial neural network simulations, this book will not teach you how to do computational modeling of neurons or networks, but I don't think that a how-to-model manual was the author's intent. This book is a very accessible introduction to concepts in computational neuroscience that are difficult for novices to learn from other texts because computational neuroscience is typically formulated in the language of mathematics. In order to actually do some modeling of your own, you are still going to need to develop the required skills in math and programming. Neuroscience is overwhelmingly full of facts, which you can very easily appreciate if you read a general neuroscience text like From Neuron to Brain. The great thing about this book is that it is primarily principle-based - it doesn't get lost in a myriad of facts. Each chapter seems to contain one solid theoretical principle or concept that can be used to understand the brain.
A bit dated, but still a good introduction. Might want to supplement it with The Troyner Notes.
Very good book for beginners. Simple and direct to the point. Gives good explanation for people coming from the biologics or computer sciences. Has an reference area on the end of the book for topics like calculus and other import concepts.I really recommend it.
A clear and comprehensive introduction to computational neuroscience. The author, as an active researcher in the field, is highly qualified to be the guide for a beginner, as well as for an expert who would like to refresh and reorganize what they know. This book covers the biological and mathematical aspects of the body of knowledge that we have about the brain today. It covers the basic biology of neurons and their networks, the modeling of their biophysics, how they process information, how they learn and remember, and how neural activity relates to the wider field of computing. The reader will be accompanied throughout the book by the author's erudition as well as a good sense of humor.
I have used this book as the basis for a junior/senior seminar on Models of Brain Function every every since it came out. The students really loved it and they developed a genuine interest in the filed. I wish that there was a second edition coming out. Compared to other texts aimed at the same audience I found this to be eminently accessible.

This is a great book. I have it for my kindle and wanted a hard copy so I purchased one. This format is terrible for knitting from. It is a small book, about the same size as a short story anthology usually is and it's thin, so they put all that information into small print. Also, the back is glued, so when I spread the pages apart so the book would lay flat the pages came loose. I took it to have spiral bound and that made it much better to read from, but it still isn't a book to have on a side table and read the knitting instructions from while you knit. I have to put the knitting down, pick up the book to read, put the book back down, then try to remember what I read to knit it. I'll stick to my kindle one and just save this as an example of why I should pay attention to ALL details before I pay for something.
Calling all HKers! This book, Knitter’s Almanac (KA), is a 150-page paper-back-sized book, first written in 1974 (and with necessary corrections made in stitches and patterns in later editions like this 1981 edition), by Elizabeth Zimmermann (EZ). KA is actually a calendar filled in with 12 HK projects – 1 per month.KA, along with The Opinionated Knitter (TOK [Please read my review: https://www.amazon.com/Opinionated-Knitter-Elizabeth-Zimmermann/dp/0942018265/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 The Opinionated Knitter ])and the Knitting Workshop (KW [Please read my review: https://www.amazon.com/Elizabeth-Zimmermanns-Knitting-Zimmermann-1981-12-01/dp/B017MYPOCA/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Workshop by Elizabeth Zimmermann (1981-12-01) ]) make up a mighty triad of great knitting books by the late maven, master knitter EZ. This book, like her others, sprinkles in parts of her own life with her husband (whom she affectionately calls ‘Old Man’) and her 3 children in a 1-room schoolhouse in Wisconsin (after the couple immigrated to the US from Europe right before WWII). TOK and KW give a lot more details about their lives.KA lays out a great 1-year curriculum for creating 12 knitted projects. This book contains some black and white photo and pattern-stitch graphics, but much less so than those in TOK and KW.At the end of KA, is a 6-page Appendix, with black and white stitch – needle graphics. There is also a 2-page Index following this section. As with the patterns/ lessons learned in KW, EZ set up her patterns and curricula and also arranged them in KA, from simple to complex. The 12 patterns/ chapters of this book are: 1. A Aran Sweater; 2. Some Babies’ Things; 3. Difficult Sweater (Not Really); 4. Mystery Blanket – Weaving; 5. Mittens for Next Winter; 6. Borders, Small Stuff for Summer Knitting – 3 Hats; 7. A Shawl: Good Travel Knitting, One-Row Buttonhole; 8 Christmas Fiddle-Faddle in the Wilds; 9. Nether Garments; 10. Open-Collared Pullover; 11. Moccasin Socks; and 12. Hurry-Up Last Minute Sweater (my favorite pattern in this book). This book, plus TOK and KW, should be on the bookshelves of all HK and EZ enthusiasts – as an integrated book about HK, but also a highly interesting book by a knitting genius who wants every HKer to ‘play’/ experiment, themselves, to develop their own new stitches and patterns.
This would be a full five star review if I hadn't bought the kindle edition. I feel like I have spent a day with my granny talking about knitting, having had a lot of my own views validated by the queen of knitting - wonderful. But the format does not suit the kindle at all, the pictures are badly placed and it is hard to set bookmarks right so you can go back and find what you are looking for in patterns etc. I went right along and bought it in paperback today and now feel that I have wasted the price of the kindle edition - I could have bought yarn for that!
The patterns are OK - nothing out of the ordinary and some feel and look very dated (probably because the book was written in 1974!). The baby sweater with the gull pattern is one of the best patterns in the book. The directions are good. There are some interesting and helpful "terms and procedures" at the end. A nice addition to your knitting book library, but nothing you can live without.
Whether you are a raw beginner or an expert knitter, you can't go wrong with Elizabeth Zimmermann. In my case, back when I decided to learn to knit, I was having a problem with - what was it? I don't remember. Two stitches that were supposed to be different from each other kept coming out the same. I found EZ's "Knitting Without Tears" in the library, read it, and bingo! Problem solved. With this book, you can knit your way around the year. Like all of her books, you can also use it as a jumping off point; as inspiration to design your own project. ("Unventing," EZ calls it.)
Its great to see this knitting classic updated in a larger hardback version, with larger print, color pictures, and some things re-knit in todays yarns. EZ fans everywhere will want to have this new version! The Almanac features lovely things to knit for each month of the year with accompanying story and instructions from Elizabeth. It feels like sitting around and knitting with your beloved grandmother. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee writes the new introduction and EZ's daughter adds some relevant clarifications here and there. Otherwise, its the same EZ instructions we've come to know and love, the long written out version and the "pithy" version. The charts are still hand-drawn, I'm surprised they didn't update those too.

I read this book nearly 7 years ago when it first came out, and I decided to read it again before going to see the soon-to-be-released movie, "Sully," starring Tom Hanks. I'm really glad I read it the second time. For an outstanding "feel good" book, once is not enough."Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters" is the story of a dedicated and talented pilot who worked in relative obscurity until one extraordinary moment in time catapulted him to international fame. The events of January 15, 2009, don't appear in detail until two-thirds of the way though the book, which is very fitting, because Captain Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow portray how the events in Sully's life and interaction with family and important mentors along the way had prepared him to meet the ultimate challenge which had never been practiced in flight simulators - losing power in both engines at the same time shortly after takeoff in a major metropolis.Sullenberger was the perfect pilot to have faced those unthinkable circumstances. Throughout his whole life and career as a student, Air Force Cadet, fighter pilot, and commercial pilot, Sully made it a point to soak up every bit of knowledge he could from his own and others' errors. He fought against complacency that could result from routine travel and believed in preparation, preparation, preparation. He engaged in constant "situational awareness," staying simultaneously cognizant of every conceivable condition, such as air traffic, wind speed, weather, location of nearest airports, and remaining fuel levels. He learned to anticipate the unanticipated. He believed that as a captain, he bore the chief responsibility for the lives of all passengers and crew. This is a book of inspiration, but it also reveals that the lives of airline employees are not as glamorous as they had been in the 1960s, The Golden Age of Aviation. Government deregulation and the financial collapse of the airline industry after September 11, 2001, forced pilots to take a 40 percent cut in wages and to lose their pensions. Mergers and cost-cutting measures proved to be frustrating for Sully, who prided himself on customer service. He was twice reprimanded for making his flights late by insisting that empty seats be given to standby passengers. One of the most uplifting portions of this book is the reaction of the ferry captains and any first responders who witnessed the river landing and sped to the rescue of the passengers without being commanded or requested. These actions restored Sully's faith in human nature, which had taken a big hit in 1964 when Queens resident Kitty Genovese was assaulted and murdered while 38 people who heard her screams did nothing to help her.Do yourself a favor - read the book and treat yourself to the movie starring Tom Hanks. Yes, I am endorsing a movie that I haven't seen, because this is a chapter of Americana that makes everyone proud.
From beginning to end this book is captivating. We all know the story and how it ends but even so, every part of this book is interesting. I was so engrossed I felt emotions I did not expect to feel. Before reading the book I thought of this mostly as a feel-good story but the reality is that it is so much more than that. Read it to find out all the details of that flight and the man who landed that airplane safely in the Hudson. I could not put this book down and I'm sad that it's over. Looking forward to seeing the movie when it's released next month, though!!
Sully and his Co-author did a good job writing this book. This is a book that is not just about Airplanes and Piloting. It is a book that is not just about the Miracle On The Hudson Flight. This is an Autobiography in it's purest form and a very honest Autobiography at that. In it Sully reveals the makings of a Pilot,Father, Husband and United States Citizen. He is at times almost too personal about his Family and his everyday family life. This coming from a man that is basically a very private humble non-extroverted person it is truly remarkable and revealing. I am a pilot also and when I first opened the book I thought that was all the book was going to be about. A few pages in I knew I was reading an autobiography and not just an Aviation book. If you want to know just about the Miracle On The Hudson flight there are other books you might want to read first. If you want to know how Sully evolved into the amazing Human Being that landed a huge Airliner on the Hudson River without loss of live or major injury to any of his passengers this is the book you should read. Like all well written Autobiographies you come away from having read with the feeling you personally know this person named Sully Sullenberger. That is the highest complement that can be paid to any autobiography.
This is an awesome story and awesome man who gives credit to his crew and even to the man that taught him to fly when he was 16 years old. I hope the movie that is coming out, based on his book will be a credit to home and his crew, and the families involved.
I think that Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's book reads well. Very well, indeed. Were it solely about the five minute flight over New York City in January, 2009, it would have a lot of padding in its 300+ pages - but fortunately, and obviously (to those who know the author), it's not just about the world-famous events of the amazing ditching on the Hudson River - it goes far, far beyond that.Highest Duty is a portrait of an American life. Sully takes us on a tour encompassing his small-town upbringing, discussing his parents' instillation of strong, consistent values, discussing his early love affair with aviation, telling personal and touching stories of his family and his remarkable wife and partner Lorrie, covering his life-long focus on improving safety and reliability in aviation, and reviewing his observations about our nation's commercial aviation industry. While one might reasonably wonder whether a formerly anonymous commercial pilot would have a compelling story to tell - a story that goes beyond the brief flight over the Hudson River - the engaging pages of Highest Duty make it clear that Sully's story is engaging, gripping, and filled with lessons for us all.
A great book, a great read, a great example of a person who, though he does not consider himself a hero, I have no doubt in my mind that he really is one.In this book, Sully tells us about how without knowing, he prepared throughout his life for this ditching in the Hudson River. He is a true professional and his greatest virtue is being humble.I highly recommend this book!
I had a hard time putting this book down. Sully is a humble but inspiring man, thrust into the spotlight, not by his own accord but by circumstance. Handling both the Hudson landing and the newly acquired media attention presented separate but equally challenging obstacles, and sully handles both with humility and class.

"The Day of the Jackal" by Frederick Forsyth was published in 1971 and has remained popular. I remember loaning it to my aunt, and her comment when she finished: It's good, but we know that nobody assassinated Charles de Gaulle. Therein we have the problem with "Night School", the latest Jack Reacher story.Set in 1999, Jack Reacher is 35 years old and still in the military, although he certainly doesn't behave that way. There is a serious threat to world peace and he is sent to fix the problem. But, we know that life as we know it did not end 1999.That being said, it's a pretty good story. We learn a bit about Reacher's background. In this episode Reacher is nearly invincible which I didn't mind at all.I received a review copy of "Night School" by Lee Child (Random House – Delacorte) through NetGalley.com.
I’ve read all 20 Jack Reacher novels, written by Lee Child. I jumped at the chance to evaluate copy of his newest book. You don’t read 20 of anything unless you really like the characters, and “Night School†is no different. Taking place back in the mid-90’s Military Police Major Jack Reacher is reassigned to go back to school – but it isn’t what anyone thinks. It’s really just a cover to investigate a possible act of treason and terrorism. Reacher teams up with his old colleague Sgt. Frances Neagley and a group of new folks representing the FBI, CIA and the national Security Council to find out what is happening and how to stop it. The best part of a mystery is finding out what happens, so I won’t spoil anything, but Jack Reacher does his usual thing and in the end prevails in the usual Reacher fashion. The interaction between Neagley and Reacher, along with the other team members is entertaining. That’s the good part, now the part that isn’t quite as good. I like Reacher novels because over the years he has been consistent - Jack Reacher is a really interesting character – keeps a clock in his head – always know exactly what time it is. Calculates the physics of a punch before he throws it, etc. In this book, Reacher is a bit more superficial. There is a lot less of Reacher’s thought process in this book and I felt it made the book a bit less fun to read. In fact, I can only give it “4 Stars†because it’s good – very good, in fact… but it lacks a bit of what makes Reacher novels so enjoyable.Reacher fans will love it. Folks new to the series will enjoy it, as well. I enjoyed it. I just wish Lee Child done a bit more to keep Reacher’s character as unique and entertaining as he has done in the past.
I've been a Lee Child fan since reading my first Jack Reacher novel, so you can imagine my disappointment when I began Night School and discovered it wasn't the old ex-Army Reacher. Night School is set in the era before Reacher left the Army. The story itself is okay, good even, but not the independent Reacher we've come to know. To be sure, some of the elements are there such as his impeccable logic, but it just doesn't have the same Reacher feel. Does my disappointment mean I'll stop buying Child's novels? No, it just means I'll scrutinize them much closer and won't buy them on a pre-release basis.
Wow. I have been an avid fan of Lee Child and have read every single Jack Reacher novel he has written and have waited eagerly for each new one to come out. I just love Jack Reacher, with all his faults and oddities, he is a true character and worthy of the fame he has garnered. So I was not only disappointed, but actually shocked at how disappointing this book was. The characterization was totally flat, the story line was so boring it was almost non existent, and I actually had a hard time finishing the book. I really didn't care how it ended, I just wanted it to be over.Mr. Child, your fans depend on you for high quality, exciting adventures with developed characters and story lines that make it hard to put the book down. If this is what future publications are going to be like, you are going to disappoint the millions of us who are devoted to Jack and faithful to you. Don't do it. Please go back to the quality you originally delivered.
I love Reacher novels, and own them all, but this one was flat-out boring. Normally I can't stop reading and end up losing sleep because I have to know what happens next. With "Night School" I had to force myself to keep going. I'd suggest skipping this one, or waiting till later once the price has dropped.
For such a solid writer, this was a mediocre read. A Reacher who was much more arrogant and dismissive than usual, and a plot where way too much that went wrong was easily fixed. I have read all his books because I liked the protagonist and his mindfuless, but that may unfortunately be eroding.
I've read all 20 Reacher books. This one is differerent. I don't like the stilted writing style or the way Reacher is portrayed. The dialog between Reacher and the other characters sounds like something out of a Tom Cruise movie :-(
It must be difficult to keep coming up with new entries in a series that keep readers` interests alive and while maintaining character integrity. Over time mr child has been less than successful in the endeavor, in my opinion. This prequel was slow motion and did little to paint additional nuances to Reacher` s character. Parenthetically it was a complete sellout for Tom cruise to play Reacher

#310,928 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
There have been many fascinating accounts by western pilgrims, explorers, and adventurers (Alexandra David Neel, Heinrich Harrer, Lama Anagarika Govinda, and Ian Baker come to mind) about life-transforming experiences in Tibet. In the Shadow of the Buddha is a most worthy addition to this body of literature.Matteo Pistono began with a plan to write a biography of Terton Sogyal, a highly realized holy man and revealer of hidden teachings, who lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was a close advisor to the thirteenth Dalai Lama during years when Tibetan sovereignty was threatened by both the British and Chinese and used his considerable spiritual powers to guard against these threats. The book provides beautifully written and inspiring accounts of important events in the life of Terton Sogyal and of the author's visits to the places where those events took place.During his decade of arduous travels in the Land of Snows, Matteo Pistono lived in a monastic encampment, sought out Buddhist masters and hermits, received advanced teachings, learned special practices, and witnessed the seemingly miraculous. He also encountered evidence of human rights abuses, including destruction of homes, imprisonment, torture, and even death meted out to monks, nuns, and others whose only crimes were to practice their religion, peacefully protest, express devotion to the Dalai Lama, or merely decline to denounce him. Before long he was spiriting evidence of these violations out of Tibet so that they could be seen by policy makers in Washington, Europe, and the UN. At the same time he was bringing in messages from the Dalai Lama. These were, to say the least, perilous activities, and the book often reads like the page-turning mystery thrillers of Eliot Pattison - except that this is no fiction. So we have a biography of Terton Sogyal, accounts of Chinese government abuses, and of the adventures undertaken to expose them. Interwoven with these elements is the author's description of his own spiritual journey as a student and practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism during the decade that he took to research and write the book. Central to this spiritual journey is his struggle to reconcile anger at the actions of the Chinese government with his efforts as a Buddhist to practice meditative equanimity and cultivate compassion. As we learn how he resolved this conflict, we learn much about Tibetan Buddhism, about its practices and its teachings on wisdom, compassion, impermanence, and death, and the awakened mind's ability to transform thoughts and emotions. In the Shadow of the Buddha is an amazing book - a gift for all who care about human rights, the Tibetan people, and the teachings of the Tibetan Buddhist masters.
Watch the video, buy the book. Surely, as humans with compassion, we can all agree that any freedom, certainly religious, is a basic human right. No matter what your own religious views, this book will move you to want to help spread the word of crimes being perpetrated against Tibetan Buddhists. A true story written as though you are personally reading Matteo's journal while alternately learning about the history and background of the Buddhist religion-a long, beautiful history. We all know that many wars are about religion. Reading this book and acting, even with only minutes of commitment, could preempt a larger problem in the future. Through Matteo's courage and devotion we can be moved to turn the tides of the future for religious freedom in Tibet-the freedom that we are so blessed to have in our own country-a gift we are able to share if we choose to do so. The more people who shed light and speak out against religious persecution help to keep the flames of freedom burning. The more that the perpetrators know how many eyes and ears are (and growing, I pray) on them the less likely they are to push further. This is a time-sensitive issue as the next Dalai Lama has been chosen through means by which the Buddhists have no say; chosen for political reasons not religious, and not in the historic fashion as all previous Lamas have been chosen. Imagine, if you are Christian, the U.S. government deciding that they will be the ones to choose the next Pope (I'm not Catholic but I respect the freedom for anyone to practice this religion and how the church chooses their leader through their own tradition). This is not just about religion but about basic human rights which are necessary for the survival of our species. I pray that through reading this book, no matter what name you call your god, you will be moved through your heart to help others be free to name and praise their god openly and peacefully. Bless you, Matteo, for your courage, your book, and your work have made the world a better place and, hopefully, an even better one in the future. Oh, and it's a great read!
Highly recommend. The author weaves Tibet's historical struggles with more recent challenges observed during his visits and with direct contacts with Tibetans. Excellent book shedding light on the oppession Tibet faces even today. Conversations with the author has with HH Dalai Lama, Richard Gere, and Nancy Pololski are reminders of that this continues to be a current issue of concern for human rights.
This book is as close to life-changing as one can get through the written word. The journey clearly was for the author, but I find that I am more mindful in my daily life for having read it. The book flows well, is beautifully written, and at times reads more like a fast-paced spy novel than a memoir. If you're interested in Buddhism, the Tibetan people, or China's nefarious agenda in Tibet, I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is definitely one that will remain in my collection for a second read in the future.
