It really shows, maybe unintentionally, how the secret service all over the planet is something to be banned. These men have created a career for themselves enacting childhood spy games. The public gains nothing from them.The book is informative, well researched. The authors tries to be impartial (he explains why), but it is difficult to not come out against this 'spy vs spy' nonsense.I highly recommend it. You may come out with a different take on the whole thing. But it will sway you one way or another, for it is truly quite a story excellently written.
Tom Mangold bases this exciting, well-crafted account not on newsclippings and surmise but on dozens of insider interviews. These interviews must have been authorized from "on high," so it is clear that the Agency had turned against Angleton, or at least had decided to clean up the mess he had left. At the same time, Mangold does not tell the full story. One cannot expect him to do so while maintaining access to all of those sources. For example, there is ample evidence that Angleton ran his own assassination squad. Mangold doesn't tell the story of Angleton's (probable) theft of J. Edgar Hoover's files, as told in Curt Gentry's biography of Hoover. And Mangold doesn't really emphasize the fact that Angleton's "fundamenalist" group included a lot of people outside the Agency. Still, for anyone interested in researching the most devious and fascinating of the founding CIA members -- someone whose paranoia was so destructive that he was eventually accused (wrongly) of being a KGB asset himself -- this book is essential.
I was expecting a book about James Jesus Angleton to be more of a chronological narrative of his life and career and to have something in it that explained some positives about the man/legend. I was quite surprised to read of one negative expose after another, listing and explaining Mr. Angleton's screwups while head of counterintelligence with the CIA and the damage he caused while in that position. I knew he had a big reputation and the book lists him as a master spy catcher, which if you read the book is an exercise in sarcasm at best. I am near the end of the book and have yet to read anything that would justify giving him that title. Even if he was chief of CI and not a KGB agent he did more damage to the CIA than if he was a KGB asset. At least according to the author. Mr. Mangold's writing is adequate, but the real test is whether the facts are those . . . facts and the nature of the topic always creates doubts, but I was interested in the time, history and information on the subject and the book was extremely informative with a huge listing of notes in the back and some in the chapters. A good read.
This was one take on JJA that offered some insights not highlighted elsewhere. I found it to be an easy read.
A complicated and I think very insecure individual. I was hoping for more psychological insight into his personality but for me this book didn't quite satisfy.

Proof of Barabara Tuchman's thesis in "March of Folly" that we are led by buffoons and misguided idealogues from catastrophe to catastrophe. Exhaustively sourced this book must be the last word on Angleton.

I have read many of the main books on machine learning. This is hands down the best. Rather than a laundry list of techniques, the book starts with a concise and clear introduction to statistical machine learning and then consistently connects those concepts to the main ML algorithms. Each chapter is 10 pages or so of crisp math and lean prose. A brief summary at the beginning of each chapter gives a clear sense of what will be accomplished in it, and attention to notation makes sure that mathematics supports understanding rather than getting in the way. This is definitely not a "how to" book, but rather a "what and why" book, focused on understanding principles and connections between them. I read the book cover to cover, and I was left with a sense of machine learning as a coherent discipline, and a solid feel for the main concepts.
I bought it since I wanted to refresh my knowledge on machine learning (I am a CS graduate, took the ML course about 15 years ago...). I finished one third of it by now and enjoy it very much.What I especially like about this book is that it gives a good theoretical background, before jumping into the algorithms.When getting to the algorithms the author show how to use the theoretical tools to analyze them, which is great !Also, the theoretical part was enough for me to further read and understand more recent theoretical ML research papers.That is a great feeling ! I wholeheartedly recommend this great book for graduates.
31 chapters in 360 pages, has exercises without answers.The test is very terse as you can figure out (each chapter has bibliography and exercises which take several pages from the chapter).From theory (no no) to algorithms well I little bit (same information level that I can get in Wikipedia)Just I want to know why k-means you can use Manhattan or euclidean distance, why to use one versus the otherthis book will not answer the question
For those with a strong mathematical background, this may be the best introduction out there. It takes one from the beginning concepts through to current research topics. Highly recommended!
This book contains some good introductory insights and fundamental principles but quickly gets into a lot of esoteric theorems and corollaries. I am happy with the purchase but I do not think all its pages will turn out to be useful to me or the typical practioner. By the way, I received the South Asian (India) edition; not sure if the seller is trying to pull a fast one by substituting that, but condition and content seem equivalent to US edition.
Ideal book for learning theory of machine learning, in order to get a deeper understanding of practical algorithms. Clear mathematical presentation, covers every subject that I come over in articles and want to understand better, good exercises.
This book is a very well written. Doesn’t go so much into detail but it’s still very intuitive. Small chapters are very informative and keep you interested in the topics. I used this book for the undergraduate class in ML I taught and my students loved it. However, the paperback printing is awful. Very cheap papers and graphs are not colored. If you’d like to buy it just go with the original US edition of this book!Overall, the book is very nice for an introductory class in machine learning for an advanced undergraduate level class. Can also be used for a graduate level class but some other materials should be covered that are not included in this book.
I love this book. It is an excellent compendium of detailed algorithms in machine learning.

I just started using this, after spending a lot of time first with Wilhelm and then also with the big red Ritsema/Sabbadini/Eranos I Ching. Huang is a really welcome addition, giving historical background on some of the lines and hexagrams that is missing from the other two translations, and also a clear, well-thought-out translation. I find I'm using all 3 versions at once: Wilhelm for its smooth, familiar prose; Huang for its attention to accuracy, and explanations of historical references in the readings; and Ritsema/Sabbadini for a sense of the alternate meanings of a given character.The Kindle version has a good Table of Contents and deals well with Chinese characters. I'm using an ipad.Recommended.
Since I don't speak or read Chinese, I can't honestly judge how accurate a translation is. But having some familiarity with the other translations, I feel this one is the real deal. To begin with, the translator is a native Chinese speaker. So he is likely to understand how words are intended to be used at a certain point of history as well as the literal meaning. Those who translate literally always do a poor, unreliable job.The most popular translation goes from Chinese to German to English. I have to question how much is lost in translation. This book refers to those other translations and tells the reader why they're wanting.This translation is easy to read and understand. The Ten Wings are in italics. That makes them easy to tell where the other text ends and the Wings begin.Moreover, each hexagram is thoroughly discussed and explained.I like to read several translations but for most purposes, this is my favorite. By the way, the Kindle version is just great. You can easily go back to the index and click on the hexagram or section you want to read. I'm giving this four stars because it is obviously a masterful work and I would not want in any way to denigrate it. For my personal value it was a three and I returned it. This is my completely subjective opinion, from a brief trial reading the book. It's a comparative view between this and the Wilhelm & Baynes edition and the R.L. Wing edition, and others may have taken more time and come to a different view.This edition seems comparable to an expansion of the Commentary in the back of the Wilhelm & Baynes edition, with more detailed and annotated explanations about the relationships of the lines. It's like it says, "This is the situation, here are the elements and how they relate to each other." However, it doesn't draw a moral, tell a story, come to a conclusion, or provide much direction compared to the Wilhelm & Baynes edition.So, something about different modes of thought? Like, here's the ideogram, here are the relationships, so, given general knowledge of the workings of society at large, the story of action here is obvious. Versus here's the noun, here's the verb, in this particular situation, here's the story. I have no idea (or ideograms).The R.L. Wing edition, on the other hand, is much more contemporary in its language, and much more moralizing and prescriptive than the Wilhelm & Baynes edition.It may be worth noting that R.L. Wing is a pseudonym. If you look at the front matter on the original 1970'ish Doubleday edition, it lists about a dozen people in the acknowledgements. In the latest edition is just says "many people contributed; you know who you are."My spouse reads the R.L. Wing edition; I read Wilhelm & Baynes, and we both interpret each others casts. I find that the R.L. Wing edition pretty much follows the thought of the Wilhelm & Baynes edition. One thing that the R.L. Not to say that there isn't a full on scholarly effort there.For the book in review here, I guess it would be valuable for people who wanted more of the pure situation/implication approach, as well as detailed insight into the amazing inner workings and movements of the lines.
It is a wonderful book, for anybody who wants to study the I Ching. I love the fact that the author's intention is to be as close as possible to the original text without adding his interpretation. In my opinion, it is specially key when translating ancient sacred manuscripts that go beyond any historic time line and are as current today as they were thousands of years ago. This helps the reader have a more pure and direct experience with the text.
This is one of the very best I Ching books for the serious student. Karl Jung would have loved and used it. But if you are interested in entertainment only this might prove pedantic for you! So you heavy heavy I Ching devotees, buy this one for your bookshelf!

Taoist Master Huang has created a masterpiece with his version of the I Ching. His perspective has added a richness to my study and his version is now my go-to for insight and inspiration. I could not recommend this version more highly.
Having been a died in the wool Wilhelm/Baynes person forever, I finally took a look over the Huang when a friend pushed me into it.He not only does his own excellent scholarship, but compares his own work to W/B and other translations, and is very open about how he comes to his own conclusions. A brilliant book for either practical divination or serious study.

Whenever I pick up a Chadwick novel, I know I'm in for a real treat. I always learn something I hadn't known before, even if it's something small.This is the story of Ida de Tosney, who was briefly the mistress of Henry II and her life thereafter as the wife of Roger Bigod.Prior to reading this book, I knew of only one mistress that was important to Henry II for many years: Rosamund Clifford. I assumed that he was so distraught over her death that he never sought out anyone else for a long term relationship. Ida de Tosney was a ward of Henry's who caught his eye when she reached the age young women do when their bodies start to physically change. She quickly became his favoured mistress and even had a son by him. Ida, however, wasn't content to remain Henry's mistress until he tire of her. She knew that when he found "greener pastures" he would move on and marry Ida off to whoever he deemed worthy. So she took matters into her own hands and convinced King Henry to marry her off to Roger Bigod, a man to whom she was attracted and could find herself in love with.Roger Bigod, however, spent most of his life trying to stay in the good graces of the Plantagenet family after his father - Hugh Bigod - participated in a rebellion led by King Henry's eldest son Henry. Hugh was stripped of everything and Roger had to work hard to return to King Henry's graces as well as fend off the machinations of his step mother and step brothers who wanted their fair share of Hugh's titles and properties and incomes.Roger and Ida live well into old age (for that time period) and have a large happy family together.While I do enjoy a rousing good action story - from the likes of Bernard Cornwell and others - I also like the slower steady pace that Chadwick brings to historical fiction. You simply fall into the story and forget the 21st Century plugging along around you.
Early English society only recognized men as persons having rights. Once a young woman reached marriagable age, her father or whoever is her official sponsor can arrange her marriage however it best suits him or her estate/family. A woman has little or no say in her future... History also has overlooked instances of overzealous kings demanding sexual privileges for their pleasures. Court favors, societal mores... there was little young women could do to protect themselves from either their family nor the sovereigns demands. What can they do to cope with this issue? How do they fit into court life? So many intriguing tales behind the curtains of court.
This is my favourite novel so far in the Marshal series. Although not the primary focus, William Marshal is portrayed through the eyes of Roger Bigod, the male protagonist of this novel. It was great to see Marshal from this viewpoint, and it solidified everything the reader was shown about him in the first two novels (The Greatest Knight and The Scarlet Lion). It was interesting to see him from an outsider's perspective.One of the main reasons I enjoyed this novel so much was due to the female protagonist, Ida de Tosney. It was only recently discovered that Ida was the mother to Henry II's illegitimate son, William Longespee, when a document was found where he refered to "Countess Ida, my mother". By this point Ida's husband had been granted the earldom of Norfolk, thus giving her the title of Countess. This novel brings to light the struggle that Roger went through in order to regain the earldom that was in dispute after his father's death.Throughout the novel the reader watches Ida mature from a naive girl whose virginity is taken by a demanding King into a strong woman with a devoted husband and budding family. In many ways this is a coming of age story set in medieval times. Ms Chadwick did an excellent job of portraying Ida's courage--it was not a fierce courage like that of Eleanor of Aquitaine for example--but rather a quiet courage that allowed her to face each trial that life brought her way and try to make the best of it. In truth she seems like a remarkable woman, and I was glad to receive this insight into her life.
Elizabeth Chadwick has authored two historical novels that I really enjoyed, two tales of the heroic knight, William Marshall. These novels traced the arc of his career from when he was younger to his twilight--"The Greatest Knight" and "The Scarlet Lion." When I saw that Chadwick had penned yet another novel from that era, "For the King's Favor," I felt impelled to purchase this volume. And I made a good choice.Here, we have a novel at the same period of time as the William Marshall works--King Henry II and his sons--"The Young King," Richard, and John (as well as Henry's spirited wife Elinor of Aquitaine). We begin with Henry taking a young woman, Ida de Tosney, as his mistress. He treated her pretty well; she bore him a son (whom she loved--but because of whom Henry created great pain for Ida); she felt the tension between being the King's mistress, with all the benefits that came with that, and having a reputation as a debauched woman.Then, there is the tale of Roger Bigod, whose father had played fast and loose with various factions. He ended up on the losing end of the effort to keep Henry II from the Kingship. Roger, against his father, allied with Henry--but the questions about his ultimate loyalty remained. There were internal family disputes--with his stepmother warring with him over control of his father's estate upon his father's death.The stories of Ida and Roger come together, and--after having to work through the intricacies--they wed. The story then focuses on the challenges that they face--with Henry II always in the picture, and his support of Roger was always ambiguous. Over time, the tale plays out, in a pretty satisfying manner.The novel gives a sense of the historical characters--Elinor, Henry, Richard, and John of the "royals." Roger and Ida. William Marshall even shows yup in this volume! Characters are well drawn; the plot moves nicely.I found this a very nicely done piece of historical fiction.

Being familiar with Kaufman's presentation of the Book of five Rings available from the same publisher this version of Sun Tzu is a good English language translation. Keep in mind that Kaufman offers these works from a decidedly modern perspective and in an extremely pragmatic fashion. Devoid of footnotes and references save for the brief prefaces Mr. Kaufman provides them as serious study guides nonetheless. Highly recommended Reading for strategy enthusiasts.
