This is a geat resource for those who are new to Pilates and also for some of us who have been doing Pilates for a long time and who have forgotten (or never learned) so of the basics. I love this book because it is easy reading and provides clear guidelines for effective Pilates workouts!!!! I used to do competition body-building years ago and wish that I had learned Pilates back then because I'm sure my body-building and weight training would have been even better and will less chances for injury and eliminate some pain due to poor core work!!!! Better late than never!!!!
I'm a 65 year old woman trying to learn Pilates due to back issues. Look at the picture of the front of thisbook. I should have known even this book would not be basic enough for me. There are areas in the book thatstate "It is so simple you don't even need a picture". I NEED a picture.This book will not teach you how to breath, finding your neutral position or show you the ten basic exercises thatstrengthen but do not hurt or harm back injuries.Find a good Pilate instructor and pay for one on one instruction until you know what you are doing.

I took my first Pilates class and grasped the concept instantly but I wanted to do it on my own. I bought the Pilates for Dummies book and it proved to be a great starting point for me. I never enjoyed Yoga so Pilates is a welcome discovery; an addition to the weight resistance I do daily at the gym. As with all of the Dummies books, this one is easy to follow.
This is a good introduction to Pilates, however, the exercises are a bit hard to understand via a book, but it is easy to look the stuff up on YouTube, which is why I didn't dock the book another star. May be something to think of if you are getting as a book for a technophobe, though.

Very useful material and very comprehensive, too. The author has her own terminology for a few things (her "Pilates alphabet") which takes a little getting used to. Good photo illustrations of all the moves.
I borrowed a copy of the book from my local library and liked it so much I bought it for myself and for my daughter-in-law.I attended a Pilates class and told my instructor that I had the book - she remarked that it is one of the best and recommended it to the whole class here at the University of California, Santa Cruz.The book gives excellent explanations. Not only is this a topical and interesting look at everyday Russians unfolding over the course of 20 years, it's a great read. The author is an insightful and entertaining storyteller. The stories and characters are compelling and the writing is top-notch.It's full of hilarious and heartbreaking encounters that were solidly relatable on the most human level. It seems that not all Russians are reflections of their leader, just as not all Americans are reflections of ours.I also appreciated that the book is written in such a way that it's easy to pick up, read a story and then return for another later- except that I couldn't stop. It's that compelling.
First and foremost, travel writing of any kind is not easy, and great travel writing, harder yet. All too often, the genre breaks down into an author bitching about the vagaries of the real world experience, or perhaps worse, so coloring their prose with carried bias that the experience just isn't shared well. That said, Lisa Dickey is a great travel writer, and this is a wonderful read.In a time of unprecedented political bluster and saber rattling, this long-term view of real people and lives across Russia is an important vignette for Americans to take in and absorb. Dickey speaks with a clear voice, and the lives of her subjects are ours to know as a result.I'm thrilled to hear that the next 10 year swing is already being planned. That's a thing well worth staying tuned for.
I was in Moscow and St Petersburg in 1995 at the same time as the author. After over a decade in the US Navy during the Cold War and numerous operational and didactic indoctrinations to hate the soviet regime, its military and people, I still found myself drawn to the tenacity and pride of the Russians I met. I didn't see what I had been "told" to see regarding their dislike of America, nor did I ever feel at all threatened by these same people who were helping me in my efforts to successfully adopt a Russian orphan. Their efforts were sincere and heartfelt for the welfare of those caught in the aftermath of uncertainty at that time and doomed to the streets and poverty without the opportunity for another life. Over twenty years later, the comment made by these citizens in the author's journeys "about wanting to just be left alone" resonates at a personal level for me, but understates the tremendous sacrifices they made to survive and ultimately thrive in the metamorphosis. My rationale for being there, my fascination with the culture and heritage, and this precious gift of my child growing into adulthood, and their love and devotion to a new way of life also mirrors the 20 years plus covered in the book, though all of ours were lived here in the US. The authors journey and observations are inspirational, heart warming, and at times amusing, but all the while insightful to self, humility and humanity's real achievement to walk a mile in their shoes, and to really know, and love someone deemed by all others as different from "yourself." Life doesn't come from existing as self, it is found in our ability to co-exist with, understand, embrace, and nurture another's "self."
BEARS IN THE STREETS is Lisa Dickey’s Russian travelogue x 3.In 1995, as a U.S.- born writer wannabe living in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Lisa crossed Russia ‒ St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, Lake Baikal, Galtai, Ulan-Ude, Chita, Borobidzhan, Vladivostok ‒ interviewing, and staying with when she could, citizens along the way. She repeated the same journey in 2005, and again in 2015, interviewing the same people each time circumstances permitting.BEARS IN THE STREETS is essentially three travelogues in one as she summarizes the first two visits to each locale briefly, and then the last more fully. The author’s stated intent is to reveal to the reader how the country has changed over the twenty years both from her perspective and that of those she interviewed (and befriended).Early on, Dickey explains the common Russian view that Americans think that the country is a primitive place where bears wander the streets. Thus, the book’s title.Each chapter, dedicated to a specific stop along the way, contains one or two photographs taken on one or more of her visits.To her credit, Lisa’s personality lends itself to her being a creditable representative of her country over there. At least, she didn’t appear to make any enemies but rather many lasting friends.This reviewer visited Russia over ten days in 1984 focusing on Leningrad and Moscow and a couple other cities near the latter. I remember it as an historically interesting, friendly, and occasionally picturesque place, but burdened by a political system that kept it drab and not a destination I’d have wanted to return to.BEARS IN THE STREETS makes me want to go back. In terms of a travel narrative, one can’t ask for more. Lisa fulfilled her mandate. Nice job!
The book is written from deep experience, with insight, fairness (in my opinion), and humor. I think it would be great reading for anyone planning a first trip to Russia. I like the way in which the material is organized: Each chapter is devoted to a specific place; within each chapter, the author describes her visits in 1995, 2005, and 2015. She connects the information in each chapter so that a description of each visit follows the previous one organically rather than mechanically. My only question to the author would be how she can stand to wait ten years between visits! My last trip there was around the time of hers, in early September 2015. I hope to go again this coming fall, just two years later.

Not for the casual lay reader. I thought I was going to learn all about the elements, their discovery history and gain a deeper insight into the link between physics and chemistry. But if you don't already know all the elements well, and have a pretty good foundation in physics, then much of what is stated is about abstruse arguments between physics and chemistry that can't be of interest to a casual reader. While his scholarship is unquestioned, as other reviewers and the author himself has pointed out to me, his writing didn't help this beginner to understand the Periodic Table.
While reading this book I realized how little I knew about the periodic table. You learn that in the chemistry lessons at school then at the university, but I think this book is a good complement for those seeking clearing some concepts. And lot of concepts and data flow in this book, explaining all the minds that in some way tried to get -and later obtained- the final and accepted periodic table.

This book was very, very interesting. Detailed and concise it doesn't flounder at all. The tone is interesting, not boring at all. The author does seem to focus more on the French than English fashions. I'm not sure if it's because that's where most of the fashions talked about originated or perhaps it's just her area of expertise.Either way, it's an in-depth, and often scary, look at the world of fashion, past and present. Sadly it seems that most toxic fashion today is mostly harmful to workers in countries whose laws don't protect their employees.
It is a well written book with good points to it. It was like a car wreak; you don't want to look but you can't look away. What is sad is that danger to textile manufacturers is still a major problem in the development. The author also points out the need for change and some things we can do to bring it about. All in all, a sobering read.
Amazingly well written, a lot like a academic tome, but not boring. I wasn't expecting to read a more academic book, but it is well done, excellent stories and references and well, I learned a lot about the different dyes, professions and overall health of clothing and accessory workers throughout the different centuries. Amazing to me that these poor people suffered so much for 'beauty'. I am aware that it still happens, and wish it were more discussed, talked about and raised up to the public. Most people have no idea what 'fast fashion' does to people, to the environment, to the world.Excellent book if one is interested in fashion, history of fashion, dressmaking, haberdashery and or just the history of dress.

This book is beautiful and informative, but the size is a bit unwieldy if you like to carry books with you. It’s more a coffee table book, but it’s an excellent source of information and many examples.

I'm so grateful to my Dad who introduced me to this book. Knowledge is vital to healthy debate and discussion and I have been given an absolute gem of clear, concise and honestly unbiased facts with which to greater understand both Islam and Christianity. There are far too many ignorant conversations happening on the subject of religion in the west. Our opinions must only be formed after immersing ourselves in true understanding and this book is a fabulous start. I am so grateful to Dr Gabriel for his life and his work and for risking so much to be able to write this book.
I wanted to find out more about the leader of the 2nd largest religion in the world. I could not obtain any facts about him doing a Google search, just rhetoric. I wanted to find out more about him from someone who really had researched him and was going to tell the truth. I found this book and this man's story very enlightening. I am a Christian and I have many friends and co-workers who are Muslim. So please take that in consideration but, I am glad I read the book and encourage others who want to understand the differences between these two religious leaders than this book if for you and will educate you on the differences between.
This was a great book for obtaining a better understanding of the difference between Islam and Christianity. Since Mark Gabriel knows both of them from the inside and even reads the Koran as you're supposed to (proper language), his interpretation is true to what Islam is teaching today and this book gives a great glimpse into their mindset.Great read for Christians wanting to know more about Islam, and for Muslims that may want better insight into the Koran because most don't have the opportunity to read and understand it for themselves because of the language barrier.If you are wondering which religion is best for you, I encourage you to read this book before you make a decision because it will give you great truthful insight into both of them.

I’ve purchased a couple, and downloaded it to my Kindle.Although this book is not an Apologetic book, but it is a great tool to have to get an idea on Islam. It is also good for those who are seeking between Christianity & Islam.The writer is not a biased to either Faiths in his writings, he declares the facts, and at the end he provides who he decided to follow.The writer’s testimony is a wonderful one as well.Must read.
This book gave me goosebumps. I have many Muslim Egyptian friends and have never been able to explain clearly why they should follow Jesus. Most are very rigid in their Islamic beliefs because they have never known or experienced the love of Jesus. After reading this book, over and over, now I have a source of explanation and can speak about it intelligently to my lovely Muslim friends. I highly recommend this book if you want to know more about Jesus and Muhammad and their lives and characters. Thank you Mr. Gabriel. Well written, feels authentic and gives a chill to realize that there is not much of a big difference between moderate Islam and radical extremist Islam. This almost feels like jihad is nothing more than an intellectual cover for the love of violence.

Adaptive Markets is an excellent book on the nature of markets and economics as a field broadly. There is a lot of content in the book and it starts from first principles and discusses comprehensively the field of financial economics and where it stands today. The author brings his originality in thinking about the nature of markets and people to the general audience with a lucid discussion of both behavioral and mathematical finance and both of their merits and failures. The author describes how markets are evolutionary in nature and the background market place does not exist in a vacuum and this evolutionary nature is why markets can be both efficient in a particular regime but fragile to a change in regime. There is much to think about in reading this book but it is well worth the effort.The book is split into 12 chapters and include a lot of material and ideas. To set the stage the author gives the philosophical background of most modern economists which have followed in the footsteps of Paul Samuelson who helped mathematize economics. The base assumption of financial economists are that people act rationally and their decisions are constant manifestations of the attempt to maximize their utility. The author discusses some of the implications of this, in particular the game theory associated with common knowledge as well as some impressive example of when markets lead to remarkably quick processing of events and their implications on value changes in equity prices. The author spends time discussing behavioral finance and things like loss aversion and the importance of framing questions. The author gives case studies of where behavior looks irrational from an expectation maximization perspective. In particular he discusses how people use probability matching as a default heuristic for most people when making bets, say in a game where you get paid on heads and pay on tails and the odds of heads are 3/4 to 1/4 people make bets in relative frequency of 3/4 heads, 1/4 tails rather than 100% heads despite the superiority of such a strategy. The author also discusses some of the biological consequences of gambling and trading. As we can now monitor physiological changes as a consequence of realizing gains and losses for professional investors and traders, the results show that our emotional states are affected by dealing with gains and losses and certain people have trained themselves to deal with this better but the idea that we calculate odds equivalently in all mental states is empirically false. The author discusses results from neuroscience and results from split brain research. One key result is how our minds create narratives to make sense of the world and successful prediction depends on how one creates narratives that frame cause and effect in the world we live in. As a final background chapter the author discusses principles of evolution and the scientific record of man as well as on how brain structure evolved. The book is filled with results that help frame both ideas from behavioral finance as well as from traditional efficient market financial economics.The author moves from the background information to the core of his fresh ideas which he calls the adaptive market hypothesis. The author reminds the reader that despite the clear failures of people to live up to the ideal calculation agent that is homo economicus, academic fields require a new theory before discarding an old one. Describing counterexamples to assumed behavior just isn't good enough. The adaptive market hypothesis is, among many things, the idea that people develop heuristics to the market environment that are successful, but that the environment in which those heuristics are effective is always changing both due to the behavior of individuals changing as well as to exogenous factors. The author highlights how matching probabilities is a successful strategy in which the population is trying to maximize its size in an environment which changes state unpredictably even though such a strategy does not maximize the individuals survival. The author discusses how efficient markets and adaptive markets fundamentally differ in that adaptive markets don't have a general equilibrium. They might have a local equilibrium where that equilibrium is dependent on nothing changing but the world is always changing so behavior and what is right and wrong as a strategy is always adapting. It is a very compelling idea, that what drives markets and what is a successful strategy in markets is always changing as the landscape is evolutionary and adaptation is immediate rather than generational as knowledge is transferred at the speed of thought.The author uses hedge funds to highlight the evolutionary nature of markets describing how varying strategies can be effective and that strategies which were successful no longer need be. The author also discusses the results of his analysis of the quant meltdown in 2007 which is very interesting as he charts the profit and loss function from mean reversion trading and its huge change in outcome during the summer. The author highlights how certain things can self reinforce one another but are then very fragile to regime shift. The author spends time on discussing the fact that markets don't exist in isolation and that the ethics of markets can be dependent on their structure so that setting up markets correctly can impact the social outcomes. The author spends some time as well on some partial solutions to finance today and how markets are remarkable systems that can solve problems when properly applied. The author discusses global warming, longevity, poverty and how finance could be used to solved with appropriate funding solutions that diversified risks.Adaptive markets puts a lot of material together to form a theory of markets as an evolutionary social construction. It uses the ideas from efficient markets, behavioral finance, neuroscience, evolutionary biology and evolutionary game theory to frame how to view the reality of investing in financial markets. A lot of the background material lies elsewhere and the author cites these authors and books but the work is self contained despite the broad base of subjects included. I definitely think this is a work of very high quality from a very well respected academic. There are small parts which meander a bit but the author weaves the subjects together to give a coherent overview of a complex subject and frames his thesis and evidence well. Highly recommend.

Lo is so darn important. The work is very much an integration of the most compelling scientific findings from a myriad of fields that Lo sutures together in a straightforward and coherent manner. It is also a body of work that will undoubtedly inspire additional research.Evolutionary biology represents an organizing framework for Lo's reasoning. I found the framework very illuminating. A few quotes from the book:"The Adaptive Markets Hypothesis tells us that profit-taking alone isn’t enough to explain market success in organizing human behavior. We’re motivated by fear and greed, but also by a sense of fairness, and perhaps most important, by our imaginations." P. 417"Just as the human eye is susceptible to optical illusions, the human brain is susceptible to illusions about risk and probability." If you ignore the uber-geekiness and wordiness of a few sections, you will find many unique insights. For example, did you know the 2008 financial crisis wasn't a product of regulators loosening leverage restrictions? Everyone from CNN to Barry Ritholtz (in Bailout Nation) propagated this reasoning, and it's a myth. Only Andrew Lo has been brave enough to brazenly take on the Establishment in this regard: "Lehman's debt-to-assets ratio had been high since the late 1990s... What these [financial] conflagrations all have in common are new connections between previously unrelated assets. The construction of a shared pool of mortgages creates a tight coupling... in the financial system where none existed before."Before you think Lo is a pro-government academic, he then lambasts the SEC's handling of Madoff's pyramid scheme with information I've never seen before: "The OCIE and NERO conducted two separate, independent examinations of Madoff. Each examination was unaware of the other, until Madoff himself informed examiners of their mutual existence."Finally, the very last chapter--about using finance to cure cancer--is a must-read. Lo's Adaptive Markets could have used a more firm editor, but you can skip the sections on statistical analysis to get a better overall reading experience.
