Moon Shot by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton is their tale on the history of NASA, themselves and the race to the Moon. This book is really great in the story told about NASA. All from the humble beginnings, how JFK pumped in more money to the Moon landing and the end of the Apollo program. Some of the most interesting content I found was about the analysis of the political situation when JFK needed something to boost his popularity and put forth the mission to land a person on the Moon within the decade, the description of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs and the detailed descriptions of most of the missions and the milestones set in order to reach the Moon. What I found lacking was the actual Moon missions themselves. The book builds up the race and the payoff simply isn't there. The Apollo 11 mission is absolutely amazing to read about, 13 is described well due to being some of the best problem solving ever done in NASA under incredible stress, 14 is described in incredible detail because it's Alan Shepard's Moon mission and the rest of the actual Moon missions are simply glossed over.Another aspect that annoyed me a bit is the focus on Shepard and Slayton. While Shepard's story is remarkable and Slayton has been instrumental for NASA, it just reads out as Shepard and Slayton bragging a lot. Both because anything involving the two is takes up 2-3 chapters but also because it seems like all the other astronauts who paved the road to the Moon, who landed on the Moon and cosmonauts doing just as admirable achievements are completely relegated to the background while Shepard, Slayton and the rest of the Mercury Seven are held up as the original heroes. I understand that they could only write about what they knew the best but it feels disrespectful to the others to give so much real estate to the Mercury Seven when the book is supposed to be about the entire NASA history up till the end of the Apollo program.Lastly the last chapter also shouldn't have been included. The chapter is about the future of NASA and America's lack of enthusiasm in space. More specifically they lament the recent (Obama administration) cuts to NASA. This chapter just feels very much out of place. I don't quite understand why it's been added as it tarnishes the rest of the book.I would still recommend it but I will be seeking out more books that can cover the intimate details of the Apollo programs, what the Moon landings discovered and NASA's later history. It is however great for describing the early days and there probably won't be any other book as good on the Mercury missions.
I enjoyed this chronicle of the early American space program up until the Apollo Soyuz mission. The introspective narrative around Shepherd and Slayton have it a memoir feeling and the struggles these two men endured to fly were inspirational. Then the afterword came. A vicious and biased screed accusing the Obama administration of purposely destroying NASA. Barbree showed his partisanship and pettiness. To point the finger at an administration facing the greatest economic crisis for cutting the budget is disingenuous...especially when ignoring the mess at NASA that led to multiple probes being lost and the Columbia disaster.Good book until cranky Barbree decided to mislead and show his biases.
Anyone looking for a detailed, blow-by-blow of everything that happened during the space race and slightly beyond may be slightly disappointed. This book reads more like a novel, capturing the excitement of what was nothing but fantasy to most people in the 1950s. The different missions of Mercury and Gemini leading up to Apollo 11 and beyond capture more of the human element, the glories and the frustrations of a group of men attempting to make the impossible possible. The culmination of two opponents, Russia and America, becoming partners in a joint space effort was heartening.Whether I agree or disagree with the last chapter’s clumsy step into the political arena makes no difference. After an incredible story, I felt a political rant was uncharacteristic of the rest of the book. I wish I had stopped and not read the last few pages.Overall, a fun read and a different look at the space race as opposed to some of the fact-full but dryer versions I have seen. Four stars.
If you're interested in NASA's history, especially if your a baby boomer, you will love this book. I was totally captivated. It reveals things that happened behind the scenes that I had not known about or had forgotten. The affects of the Russian's launching of Sputnik started a journey that clearly showed the determination, ingenuity, perseverance, and above all, the courage of the American people. It also showed the tragedy that can happen when deadlines are put before safety. On a personal note, it brought back a memory that I hadn't thought of in many years. On a chilly night in October, 1957 when I was eleven years old, my father let my two brothers and I get on our garage roof in Lincoln Nebraska to watch Sputnik go over. I can still see that bright object going across the sky.
Loved this book! I have read other books on the space program, but this was by far the best. I found the writing to be excellent.....no tech jargon here, just great stories of behind the scenes happenings in the space programs. It was fun to read the astronaut views and feelings as the programs were evolving. Nothing got into boring details, although when needed, a story was told with enough detail to make a reader grasp the issue at hand. I liked hearing about the Russian programs going on during the American efforts. Overall, this was a great book telling ....as the title says....the inside stories.
I'd read a little about the space race over the years but didn't really know the story. I read this along with Hidden Figures and the two books together were very interesting. The story in this book is well told. I find it nostalgic, however, because I think we have maybe lost some of our inherent competencies as a nation in the decades since. It's a very interesting ride through the growth of aeronautics, space flight and engineering and gives some of the iconic characters involved a more three dimensional feel. Reading of how some of these pilots handled the early flights is sobering and fascinating. You don't have to be a space buff to enjoy this book.

#95,670 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
So moving, raw, emotional! The story of a young boy growing up during a very bad time, World War II, in Warsaw. He was orphaned at such a young age, he doesn't even know his own name, nor remember his parents. This story isn't the first I've read about the Holocaust. I have read a few non-fiction stories in college, watched a handful of documentaries, a couple of movies too. But Mr. Spinelli nailed this one! You feel as if you are there, witnessing the events first hand. You feel for these characters with everything in your being. You feel their happiness, their sorrow, their fear, their hatred, their confusion. It will be forever added to my favorites list. I can't describe this book adequately and do it justice. You just have to read it!
This is a historical fiction set in [mainly] Warsaw Poland, that uses many facts and events of the time period. I highly recommend this book. With the assistance of a gorwn-up, younger readers can appreciate and learn from the subject matter and hopefully come to sympathize with anyone who is unjustly oppressed or mistreated. The main character is a young, destitute, orphan boy who has no certainty of his identity (name, ethnicity, etc) and his daily life of surviving in the city. The story begins just before the Nazi invasion/occupation of warsaw. Poland. Shortly after, he witnesses the subjugation of the Jews of the city and their forced segregation to the ghettos, then their eventual removal by freight train (to send them to the concentration or death camps). The character's child innocence and lack of common knowledge (and current events) brings a third-person point of view to the story, as the reader is taken along with him as he gains knowledge and identity.
This book captivated me. My son loved it and wanted me to read it. I promised him one night that I would if he would read a chapter of a book I liked. Needless to say, I couldn’t put this down and devoured the book this weekend. Very well written...
This book takes place during the times of the Holocaust. Having read Jerry Spinelli novels in the past, it didn't surprise me that the main character was a young, somewhat innocent boy and that the novel is in first person. Overall I wish I would of read this book when I was younger. Spinelli serves as a great young adult writer, and this book is best suited for someone in middle school when they are just learning about the holocaust. This novel highlights a unique perspective with a light theme of how the holocaust impacted everybody in Germany; without the gruesome details. Beyond that, this still can be a great quick pleasure read for all ages. However, out what i've read from Jerry Spinelli, I recommend Maniac Magee over Milkweed without a doubt. The character development and characteristics in this novel was on point. Each character remained consistent and the details of each person's identity gave life to the story. The main character, Misha has a unique perspective from being raised on the street with little to nothing to call his own. Once the Nazis (or Jackboots as Misha called them) gained power, Misha was able to use his skills to help others close to him and himself. Compared to other Holocaust novels, this novel has less action and a lot less war battles than the average story. However, Milkweed still remains captivating and another Young Adult hit from Jerry Spinelli.
Milkweed is the best book I've ever read that deals with the Nazis, Hitler, the concentration camps, the fear and the reality of torture and death to the Jews during this reign of terror. It is written so any older child can understand it, and yet it captured my attention from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. My 12 year old, who IS NOT a history buff and doesn't even like to read, never has trouble remembering the Jackboots, the children stealing food to keep from starving, and the trains pulling away while loved ones held their arms out to each other for the last time. MILKWEED is a totally accurate portrayal of the horrors the Jewish people lived and died in under Hitler's rule, yet it is presented in a fictional way that children can understand. Don't miss this one. Thanks Amazon for putting Milkweed out there for all to read.
This is a very good book to use with younger students, but the ending isn't strong. I suspect the warm sentimentality is supposed to smooth over the ending.
A friend recommended this book and I'm just so glad that I took her advice. It is the story of a young Polish boy during WWII in Warsaw who has been separated from his parents, gypsies, traveling in the countryside. The author tells the story of the Warsaw ghetto through his eyes in a remarkable way.I loved the storytelling and found it a truly unique and powerful book.
My son's 6th grade class read this book in school and they were enthralled by it. After completing the book my son was emphatic that my husband and I read it too. We're so glad we did! The book was outstanding and kept us engaged from start to finish. Milkweed is a must read that set the stage for a very insightful dialog about the atrocities of the Holocaust. Sensational book! Don't pass it by!

From Library Journal
Publication of this well-written, beautifully photographed book coincides with the 200th anniversary of White House occupancy. Monkman, the White House curator, documents the furnishings and decorative objects as well as the metamorphoses of White House interiors. The impact of the presidents and first ladies is particularly intriguing. Monkman traces the house's history from its humble beginningsDJohn and Abigail Adams moved in to a partially finished building in November 1800Dthrough its sacking during the Madison administration to Jacqueline Kennedy's impressive efforts to keep the history of the house alive. Her work led to the institutionalization of the White House as a museum, which the American Museum Association accredited in 1988. The back of the book features a catalog of the illustrated objects. This important work is highly recommended for any collection.DJennifer Mayer, Univ. of Wyoming Libs., Laramie Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

It's a great book, well written and easy to understand, with a ton of valuable information to heal your liver. Also delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts. Glad I got it!
Has helped me to heal my liver. The testimonials were motivating. There are helpful recipes also.
I was informed that I have NAFLD and wanted this book to see what they said about beating it. It was very informative and was good on telling me what to do to beat this disease.
Insightful foray into a largely obscure health tragedy on the horizon. The authors' candor and straightforward counsel makes it easy to grasp; not written for academia.
This is a great book. Very informative and covers diet and exercise and how that works together. I highly recommend this book!
A good starting point. You have to pay attention to your own health. I choose not to eat soy products which are high in estrogen, I'm a breast cancer survivor still on medication. I also have to pay attention to the foods with iron and vitamin C because I have Hemochromatosis. I'm glad I purchased the book, I just need additional information for my situation.

Review
'Just a note to say how much I enjoyed Anthony Everitt's Cicero, which I will certainly be choosing as my Book of the Year. I found it the most wonderfully written and perfectly paced book I've read (or reviewed) in ages. The way Everitt carefully and comprehensively unfolded the drama brought back the excitement of ancient history superbly. Congratulations on spotting a real winner."-Andrew Roberts, author of Napoleon and Wellington and Salisbury "Anthony Everitt is a brilliant guide to the intricacies of Roman politics… Everitt has written a book which is unobtrusively crammed with fascinating information about Roman life and customs, splendidly clear and coherent in its narrative and altogether convincing in its portraiture." -Sunday Independent (Dublin)"We know more about Cicero than about almost any other figure of antiquity. We know so much about him, thanks to the happy chance which has seen so much of his correspondence preserved, that it is possible to write the sort of biography of Cicero that one might write about someone from, say, the nineteenth century. Anthony Everitt has done just that, sympathetically and very well. This is an engrossing book, written lucidly for the general reader, and one that only a foolish expert would disdain." -Allan Massie, Literary Review"Of all the arts, that of politics has advanced least since the days of Greece and Rome. This week's new biography of Rome's most famous politician by Anthony Everitt tries to answer the question, why?…Cicero mastered the essence of politics. He preached the difference between authority and power. He was an orator who wrote poetry, a politician who read history, ruthless yet able to articulate the demands of clemency, democracy and the rights of free men under law…If good government is rooted in history and history in biography, Cicero is the man of the hour." -Simon Jenkins, The Times "In the course of Cicero's long life, he made several powerful enemies, often through his own witty put-downs, and he was accused of everything from cowardice and self-importance to histrionics, homosexuality, and incest. But the great majority of his contemporaries - and of course posterity itself - were much kinder to Cicero, and this engrossing new biography by Anthony Everitt does a superb job of explaining why…Cicero's political life forms the real backbone of this book…As an explicator, Everitt is admirably informative and free from breathlessness. He has a sophisticated conception of character, too, including a willingness - so crucial in biographers - to embrace contradictions."-Independent on Sunday"Mr. Everitt introduces the man graciously to a new generation, and will endear him anew to all those who never grasped the sense, let alone the beauty, of that multi-clausal prose." -The Economist"Everitt is an attentive biographer who continuously rehearses and refines his account of the motives of his subject…His achievement is to have replaced the austere classroom effigy with an altogether rounder, more awkward and human person." -Financial Times

“All ages of the world have not produced a greater statesman and philosopher combined.” —John AdamsHe squared off against Caesar and was friends with young Brutus. He advised the legendary Pompey on his botched transition from military hero to politician. He lambasted Mark Antony and was master of the smear campaign, as feared for his wit as he was for his ruthless disputations. Brilliant, voluble, cranky, a genius of political manipulation but also a true patriot and idealist, Cicero was Rome’s most feared politician, one of the greatest lawyers and statesmen of all times. In this dynamic and engaging biography, Anthony Everitt plunges us into the fascinating, scandal-ridden world of ancient Rome in its most glorious heyday—when senators were endlessly filibustering legislation and exposing one another’s sexual escapades to discredit the opposition. Accessible to us through his legendary speeches but also through an unrivaled collection of unguarded letters to his close friend Atticus, Cicero comes to life as a witty and cunning political operator, the most eloquent and astute witness to the last days of Republican Rome.“[Everitt makes] his subject—brilliant, vain, principled, opportunistic and courageous—come to life after two millennia.” —The Washington Post“Gripping . . . Everitt combines a classical education with practical expertise. . . . He writes fluidly.” —The New York Times

This book combines clear and lucid writing with a fascinating subject -- the life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, probably the greatest of all Roman Senators. Cicero lived through the end of the Republican stage of Rome and died just as Augustus would transform Rome into an authoritarian Empire. Cicero has been portrayed by different authors in different ways -- as a vain and somewhat childish man, or, as here, as an imperfect human being but essentially a ruthlessly intelligent and tough-minded man, harsh in judgment of folly and dedicated to Rome's Republican principles. In this book the author captures the various famous nuances of Cicero's career, including his vanity after the Catiline affair, and his intelligence and ruthlessness during and after the reign of Julius Caesar.I have only read a few biographies of Cicero, but I found this one to easily be the most readable of them. The author does an excellent job of explaining how Rome's system of government worked, its essential nature as an oligarchy dominated by a few noble families, which goes to the extraordinary ability of Cicero that was required to enable him, a New Man, to ascend to Rome's highest office, Consul, through sheer ability. This singular fact about Cicero should erase any doubt about the superlative ability as a lawyer, a politician, and a scholar that enabled Cicero to do what very few Romans ever did -- advance above his class by ability alone.Readers who are looking for a highly readable but still scholarly work dealing with Cicero and his times will enjoy this excellent book. RJB.
I turned to this book because I'm back teaching and one of my classes is middle school ancient history. I haven't studied that myself since many years ago when I was a very indifferent student in Miss Roberta Brown's seventh grade ancient history class at Port Allegany Union High School. I ended up with this book but don't quite remember why I chose it of the several available. The book is of a manageable size--325 pages--rather than something formidable like 750. I persevered reading the rather small type because I wanted to know more about Cicero, considered one of the great writers and players in antiquity. As I have been teaching, I've been struck by what we can learn from the Greeks and Romans about good government that applies to us today. Thus the allusion to what is past is prologue. (In fact, the Founding Fathers were much influenced by Cicero and several others.) I would have appreciated reading more direct quotations from Cicero, which were somewhat limited in the book. Perhaps Everitt and his editors limited them to keep the book from becoming unbearably long. (In any event, there are several collections of Cicero's writings for those who want to read his original works.)There are so many unfamiliar names and terms in the book that it would have greatly benefitted from a list of characters and a glossary of terms. (There is a useful timeline of events and people.) I imagine that many people are like me, with little or no knowledge of these people and terms. Thus, the need for these helps.
This is a great book and essential reading if you want to understand what was happening in the final decades of the Roman Republic. Great men are forged by troubled times. The overthrow of the Republic was one of the most troubled in history and Cicero was one of the greatest in history. Before this book I had read the usual Shakespeare and shallow event-oriented presentations of Caesar, Pompey, Cato, Cassius, Mark Antony, and Octavius, but I had never read a detailed history of the period nor anything specifically about Cicero. Whether you are a history buff, a political science buff or interested in investigating how governmental systems become non-functional in light of the current dysfunction in Washington, DC, this is an informative resource and a good read.
Odds are, you have heard of Cicero. Considered one of Rome's greatest orators, his writings are the main influence on how way we remember the last days of the Roman republic. The story of Cicero's life is the story of end of Republican Rome. All of the major players of the era: Caesar, Marc Antony, Cleopatra, Brutus and Octavian (soon to be Augustus) all make an appearance in his life. In his role as one of the world's first brilliant statesman and backroom player, Cicero was friends and enemies with all of them. From Everitt's book, it seems Cicero was, at times, courageous in his rhetoric and at times, he was cowardly. He always tried to see all the angels and jockeyed for a position that put him in the best place politically while betraying as few of his political convictions as possible. In the end, he wound up on the wrong side of Marc Antony and was killed. The story in getting from provincial boy to one of the most powerful men in Rome is fascinating. I am no expert on Roman history. I have read no other biography of Cicero. But to my tastes, Everitt's biography of Cicero is excellent for the reader with a casual interest in this time period in Rome. Not only does it give us insight into what a complicated person Cicero was (both arrogant and generous; brilliant in the courtroom and terrified of physical injury) but also perhaps more importantly it is an excellent primer on the death of the Roman republic. The story of Rome's decent into dictatorship, the attempt at recovering republicanism, and then the reassertion of dictatorship is the stuff that western history is made of, and Everitt's book is a good place to get a sense of who did what when and what Cicero had to say about it. Recommended.

Enjoyable quick read for me. The style of writing was not flashy, but the description of the terrain and the tactical problems it presented was very good. The author seemed very aware of Clauswitz' [On War] discussion of time and space in combat. The description of the campaign and, particularly the battle of Saratoga was excellent. I have read a number of accounts of this battle and this is the first time I think I got the full picture and understood how it played out.I was a bit surprised by the favorable coverage of General Gates. I suspect that other writers have had their historical lenses spattered by Gates' very sorry performance at the Battle of Camden later in the war and the dispute that he had with General Arnold at Saratoga. However, this account gives Gates credit for a great deal and I suspect that credit was deserved.I particularly liked the author's depiction of armed citizens who were able to step up and defend their homes, their fields, their towns and their country. The tendency these days is to ignore or diminish their solid achievements. The credit given to the frontier riflemen and their very accurate and deadly fire is another mark in favor of this account.I have decided to read the other books in this series.Afterword: I read some of the criticism others have written and I can't disagree with much of it, but my interest was primarily on how the campaign and final battles played out and for me the book was great in those areas.
The book is not especially well written and definitely needs a good editor to take it in hand. A lot of basic typos, choppy spots, and repetition mar it badly. The author has some strange fixations - he seems to have a macabre fascination with the tomahawk as a weapon and many times repeats the same theme about it. At one point he seemed to be about to write an ode to gun ownership, which made no contribution to the narrative and seemed oddly out of the flow of the story. The fact that trees in old growth forests could be 15 feet in diameter gets repeated. In much the same way he seems to have a deep concern that African American participants in the action should be acknowledged. To make sure, he stops the flow of the narrative to mention them. He does this more than once and each time it feels like someone criticized the first draft and he was trying to make up for forgetting. He puffs quite a bit about things other authors did not do, or did badly, but I don’t feel he really plowed any new ground here. This is not a scholarly history. It also is poorly titled. He mentions the various initiatives the British undertook, but really only narrates the Saratoga Campaign. The others are merely mentioned in passing. If this is about the Wilderness Campaign it would seem appropriate to discuss the entire British effort, as he started to do and then trailed off into Saratoga.Definitely a ‘pop history’, it is a reasonable effort overall, but the story has been done elsewhere and I think better.
The American Revolution is one of my favorite periods of history, especially since I didn't have to live through it. The 1777 battles of northern New York State are often overlooked, but they are among some of the most violent and bloody of the war. Michael Logusz takes on the task of presenting the history of this campaign.---The Good Stuff---* The author writes in an easy to read style, and most of the book comes across as an easy to read narrative.* Logusz spends about one third of the book on the battles of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga. He does a very good job of explaining the geography and importance of the waterways, the thick forest with its difficult passages, and presents the strategies and tactics of both sides quite well. I have read other accounts of this campaign, and this is one of the best.* Much of the remainder of the book discusses the battles of Saratoga. Again, the author does a credible job of capturing the flow of the battles.* Logusz tells much of the tale from the point of view of the soldiers and generals involved. This definitely adds to the readability and interest of the book.* The campaign was very bloody-on both sides. The author does a reasonable job of relating the violence without getting overly sensational or graphic.---The Not-So-Good Stuff--- (and I admit to being picky)* The notes are very extensive, and it would have been my preference to move much of the information in the notes into the narrative. I find it very distracting to flip between text and notes, and truth be told, often don't read them until later.* For a story based on characters 230+ years ago, there is a remarkable level of detail in relating the thoughts and actions of relatively unknown individuals. I can't help but wonder about the absolute authenticity of these passages.* Lack of maps, and illegibility of maps included in the Kindle edition damage the text. Many of the important landmarks are either too obscure to be found on modern maps, of the names have changed over the years.* The text can get a bit confusing and choppy. It doesn't help that many of the participants on both sides had similar sounding names.* The Kindle edition, like most other Kindle editions, is plagued by typos, missing text, and other generally annoying 3rd grade nonsense.* Some of the author's viewpoints slip in to the narrative, something almost impossible to avoid.* My biggest criticism is the limitations of some of the material presented. For example, in relating the story of the Battles of Saratoga, Logusz mostly presents General Gates in a favorable light, and makes his cautious nature seem rational. In nearly every other account of this battle I have read, Gates is portrayed much differently and far less favorably. Logusz owes the reader a defense of his opinion of Gates.Similary, Logusz makes assertions which he does not defend or attempt to explain. For example, a good amount of detail is spent discussing the tactical errors made in the defense of Fort Ticonderoga, but no mention of how these errors could have been made.---Summary---I enjoyed the book, although it wasn't the sort of reading that kept me up until 4AM. The author does a credible job of relating the 1777 campaigns, and I would recommend the book without hesitation to anyone interested in the American Revolution. The work does have a number of limitations, which keep it from being a great book.
This first volume is a well-researched account of the Saratoga Campaign: Fort Ticonderroga, Hubbardton, Bennington, Freeman's Farm, Bemis Heights, followed by Burgoyne's a few days later. A great story of endurance, courage, leadership, strategy, and their commitment to fight for freedom. As good a read as Richard M. Ketchum's "Saratoga." I'm glad I read both.

Two management professors read their spirited analysis of why some companies become great and others don't. Using the "twin" method of selecting two similar companies and following them through time, they track what each did on the way to success or oblivion. Reading chapters alternately, the authors sound enthusiastic about their book, which in this abridgment is fast-moving. Though their material could be a colossal bore in other hands, you can "see" their eyes twinkle as they debunk myths and share stunning insights. Even their research methods are exciting and yet still have bread-and-butter practicality. Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.Summarizing the basic themes:* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignmentUnlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.
[book:Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies|4122] was one of the first business books I've ever read. At the time, as an aspiring entrepreneur, James C. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.
for anyone wanting to know what it takes to be a successful company, read this!"Managers at visionary companies simply do not accept the proposition that they must choose between short-term performance or long-term success. They build first and foremost for the long term while simultaneously holding themselves to highly demanding short-term standards". p182 - one of my my favorite quotes in this book.
Bought this book used after hearing a motivational speaker reference this book. The seller shipped this in record time and the book itself is a great read. This book is not just for people in the business world, but can be applicable to anyone in any field who is looking for lasting success within its organization. Highly recommend this book to anyone!
I honestly think there are better books out there for this subject matter. This book is seemingly a quick read. The tone of voice is as if you’re having a chat with a friend about the topic over a beer. There’s studies and other supporting information behind all of the claims, but it would have been better organized (I think) as a TED talk or research study.
Thoroughly researched and filled with great points. Knocked it one star because, after the first few chapters, it becomes incredibly redundant and it really drags. I could only read about Ford and 3M's same success stories so many times before I became saturated with it and couldn't take another dose. For the last few chapters, I read the first few pages and then went back to the chapter's "Take Away" section and still got everything I wanted out of the book. If an abridged version comes out, look into getting that one instead.
If you have the good to great I feel all info are just copy paste. But was enjoying to read it.
Bought this to share with an intern working for me. Jim Collins has boiled down those criteria and focus areas which real leaders need to dedicate their hours to for long term success. No silly "How to Make Friends..." and other half-baked advice. Jim Collins does research and finds what actually works. My 30+ years in management and leadership matches perfectly. Strongly recommend for students, early professionals interested in long-term success, and the mid-level manager who feels they may not have been mentored in a quality environment.
