He mentions documents that the Serbian authorities made available to him but offers no corroboration from the other side. Thus the conditions for an objective and believable appraisal of atrocities are not presented. With these shortcomings the book does not contribute to a better understanding the war in Serbia.

A very accurate description of war crimes commited by the Austro-Hungarian army again Serbian civilians and army alike, including the use of prohibited expanding bullets Dr RA Reiss, was on hand to record Austro-Hungarian war crimes in Serbia. According to Reiss imperial soldiers stated in 1915 that they received official orders to massacre Serb civilians and that "everything was permissible". Soldiers invaded villages and rounded up unarmed men, women and children.They were either shot dead, bayoneted to death or hanged… Women were sent up to the front lines and mass-raped. The inhabitants of whole villages were taken as hostages and humiliated and tortured This was all well documented at the time by the western press after and caused mass outrage.Serbia's losses in the Great War were greater, proportionately, than any other nation: 62.5 per cent of Serbian males aged between 15 and 55 died between 1914 and 1918. Research by Russian demographer Boris Urlanis suggests 728,000 Serbian wartime deaths, of which just 278,000 were military.

Generally, I am not a fan of stories in which a plucky heroine (or hero), cheerfully overcomes adversity to live happily ever after, especially, when they deal with health issues. All those movies to the contrary, you don't wake up from surgery with a smile on your lips and a song in your heart. It's more bile in your throat and the sense of being locked in a looney bin. I know from experience.But from the moment Maureen O'Neill Hooker described the aftermath of surgery, the side effects of drugs (no delicate fainting spells but massive weight gain and bizarre hallucinations), I knew this was more than a true story - it was a real one. Her style is not a linear "and then I did this" but a fever dream of events, coming in and out of focus. She doesn't let us get lost, however. We are with her through her hardships, to the, well, pretty happy ending. She doesn't forget to find and thank the family of the heart donor who saved her life, by founding a scholarship in her honor.Well done. Thanks, Maureen.
This book is more than a book about what it is like to have a heart transplant. I was enthralled throughout. I didn't expect to have this book motivate me and touch me so much. It's far more than a book about a health issue, though I will say that the medical aspects of a heart transplant are incredible. I had no idea that having a different person's heart inside of you would be unlike anything the rest of us will ever imagine. I am so impressed with the families mentioned in the book. This is not just a book for those who have health issues. Anyone would find this book captivating and it may just change how you look at things and live your life. God works in mysterious ways. Great read.

Kevin MacAlpin was hired by her father to find her in exchange for the chance to be pardoned by the King. This is just a great story!

So many things start happening the book should read, HAPPY READING!!

Now Kevin feels he has another problem the king will think he kidnapped the heiress since she's been found on his ship. When he discovers her the sparks fly and eventually she sees the only way out of her situation is to propose marriage. Gailyn has put off marriage, she simply hasn’t found mister right, but maybe she’s finally found a strong, handsome man for her at long last. A captivating story I know you’ll enjoy. This my honest opinion and review after I read the book.

I'm using this book now. I have found it really frustrating. The information seems about four or five years old. Seriously out of date. Lonely Planet is very popular and so you will be competing with many many other travelers for the very limited selection of hotels.Notice the phrase, ¨On a shoestring¨ HA! Over and over it recommends mid to high range. Over and over it tells you, go with the most expensive. Or ask around. Well, many travel agents, hotels once they make it in, jack up their rates.Most annoying, many of the recommendations are closed. And have been closed for years.I wish I had taken Rough Guide. Lonely Planet is usually better on maps but this time many of the maps are off and travel times and agencies. Here they are often missing. For instance: in Cusco the book fails to note that almost all the bus service south to Puno and La Paz starts at night. I found one company, Libertad, during the day. Cheap but sooooooo slow that I missed the border closing time, had to take another hotel. Then I could not get the cheaper US visa at Puno because the buses to La Paz, tourist buses that will actually leave on time, leave at 7 30 and 8 am, before the Bolivian Consulate opens.Rough Guide has problems with the maps too. And they are not as up to date as I would like. But the information, the sites (LP gives a very truncated version of what to see with recommendations to ¨hire a guide'over and over again) where Rough Guide gives more city recomendations, and much better background information.So, until they update, go with Rough Guide.Oh and I bought the online version too, Kindle. Dreadful. Each page does not have a chapter heading. You never really know where you are. And try searching. It gives you all kinds of tidbits but often not the ones I want.
I just got back home this morning from spending 3 weeks in South America. All I can say is that this book was great for referencing things to do in different places, but the prices were off about a third of the time, and I wish it had more information about how to get to places. Luckily I knew enough Spanish to get around and double check with the locals. As far as the food goes, I'd say the recommendations are pretty good, having tried at least one place in each major city visited (applies only to Colombia and Peru), but don't forget to check with locals for good local authentic and cheaper food, so that you don't have to pay tourist prices for the food. The hostel recommendations were good; my only gripe is that they were almost always more than what the book said (perhaps they raised their prices after being published due to increased demand?) Overall a useful book, although a bit heavy to carry. If you're only going to 1 or 2 countries like me, just get the country book. If you're doing a multi country trip over many months as most of the backpackers I met were doing, this book is great to cover many things, but perhaps try buying the .pdf version too! Trust me, the weight off your back will be wonderful when you're on the road. :)
This is the kind of product I love! Lonely Planet is great, and provides all information that you need for a first safe and pleasant "landing" in an unknown country/city: no need to buy their more modern versions (a guide for each city, for each region/country) that would provide details that are way too specific for the average needs of a traveler (and for the experience traveler or short stay person that lives one or two month in a city, let's be honest, would you base your plans on a Lonely Planet Guide?). The South America "summary" is what you need! A little investment, and you are ready to go everywhere you need. I just bought these summary versions (for the USA, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, South America, etc.) and with a little investment and no more than a few volumes you are ready for the magic of traveling!
I have purchased about eight Lonely Planet books, and this one is probably the weakest. Maps and info sometimes wrong, info unclear, prices way off (used it just months after reprint date) leading me to assume some of this info is many years old, etc. Some of the accomodation recommendations were just outright awful, particularly in Canao Quebrada in Brazil. i would recommend the Footprints book over this one. However, here are the LP pluses. I did make a few awesome boxed recommendations, namely Astrid y Gaston restaurant in Peru and Sete Cidades in Brazil. If you get this book, I would just recommend getting Footprints or another to completment.
Overall, I found the basic information in this book to be useful and accurate (I purchased the 2010 edition). However, I felt the book really played up the negative aspects of all of the countries in South America. I planned on spending at least a month of my sabbatical in South America, but ended up changing my plans before I went because of this book. I ran into another traveler from the US on my trip who had the same book and asked him what he thought about the book. His response was, 'I feel like I am lucky to be alive and have made it this far because of all the warnings in this book'. I told him I wholeheartedly agreed.Now, don't get me wrong, it is good to know the negatives of all of the places you will visit! I want to know that I shouldn't take unmarked cabs and that the border patrol is very likely going to steal everything of value from my luggage. However, the warnings in this book had me paranoid and quite frankly, afraid. I would say that I am a well traveled person and live in a large city, so maybe this book wasn't meant for me. Based on the title of the book, it might be more appropriate for people who have never traveled before, backpackers. If you are a fairly confident, well versed traveler, I would consider another book. If this is your first time traveling anywhere, this might be the book for you. I am sure that all of the stories in the book have happened, luckily, I didn't experience any of them.Incidentally, I can't wait to go back to South America, but I will be using a different book.

Jenifer Gamber is a noted speaker and retreat leader across the Episcopal Church on faith formation. She is the author of My Faith, My Life: A Teens Guide to the Episcopal Church, along with its Leaders Guide (2014), and Call on Me: A Prayer Book for Young People (2012). She is enrolled in the Masters of Divinity program at Virginia Theological Seminary and lives in Washington, DC. Ms. Gamber's book is an excellent introduction to Western Christian spirituality, let alone a comprehensive introduction to the "middle way" of the Episcopal Church. I would say that most of the book is actually given over to spiritual life and practice. This says a lot about Ms. Gamber's and the Church's orientation. She lays out and incorporates into her discussion the spiritual analysis of the Jesuit Father Bernard Lonergan --- that is, the ways of examining events, experience, and so forth; making productive spiritual conclusions about them; and moving on with the hope of spiritual transformation. Ms. Gamber discusses briefly, but really nicely, the search for personal calling and a variety of methods of starting out on prayer and continuing in the routine of prayer. She discusses worship and ministry in the context of the Church's Baptismal Covenant. She has a nice discussion on the Eucharist and the Prayer Book ritual(s) for it.Ms. Gamber's emphasis is upon thought and growth, not just on doctrine and ritual. Nonetheless,in the midst of all this, she also finds the time to tell us what a "paten" is and makes us familiar with "chasubles", "cottas" and incense (!). She also talks about the Church's institutional structure.A really nice book for the cradle Episcopalian, the new Episcopalian, or for anyone wanting to learn about this beautiful Church.
Great read if you are wanting to learn more about the Episcopal Church and beliefs. The author goes in some detail regarding their worship and sacraments.
Excellent Resource! This is a well written, in depth book that is easy to read, and a joy to have at hand. As an Episcopalian that was searching for a comprehensive look at all aspects of our Church, I was glad to have found this resource. It will, no doubt, come in handy in the third year of our Education for Ministry class when we study the Church and its' history, as well as stand as a gift for those who are searching for that "Welcoming" Church.
This is a really good book to read if you want to know more about the Episcopal Church! I'm currently going through Confirmation classes and it's a big help to have around (also, we're using it to study from)! Highly recommend it. There's also a teen edition!

Jennifer Gamber has assembled an excellent introduction to the Episcopal Church in a fashion that is readily understood by most age groups. I've used this for my confirmation class and will use it in the future.
To know the Episcopal Church is to love it. If one is new to the Denomination YFYL is book is a must. If you're a lifelong or somewhere in between member, you too will want this book in your Library. If your checking out churches read the book and find a pew !

I read this book two years ago and recently decided to re-read all my Laura Kinsale books, saving the best for the last. I do believe I enjoyed this story more the second time around. What a roller coaster ride Ms. Kinsale takes the reader on, as we maneuver through the life of a powerful young duke who was born to prestige, riches, extravagance, the pleasure of women, whatever his heart desired, going on the ride of his life without having an inkling of how quickly everything in one's world can change - often, never to be the same.Christian Langland, Duke of Jervaulx, is a brilliant mathematician, all around rake, lover of dogs and a faithful friend. When his paramour's husband catches him leaving his wife's bed and calls him out, Christian isn't aware that he's in the middle of his life's greatest crisis. Yes, the strange sensation he has upon leaving his mistress's bed and walking down the stairs was a stroke in the making.Although struggling mightily with a headache and strange sensations in his arm and hand, Christian keeps his commitments during the next couple of days, including a lecture at the Analytical Society in order to present a paper he and an elderly, blind Quaker gentleman - Mr. Timms, have collaborated upon via messenger. Mr. Timms' daughter, Archimedia (Maddy) knows Christian's reputation and is very concerned he's going to play her kindly, mild-mannered father false just for a big joke. Not so - Christian may be many things, but in his heart, he's serious about math and values his work with Mr. Timms.However, when he collapses on the dueling field the morning after the lecture, the world believes he has died. It's a blow to Mr. Tibbs who genuinely respected Christian's mind and truly enjoyed their collaborative work.Fast forward to some weeks later. As Maddy and her father tour her cousin's brand new, high class asylum where Maddy is considering taking a position, she is shocked beyond measure to recognize Christian as one of the residents of the asylum. Further, apparently he's considered to be a dangerous madman without the ability to communicate. But, Christian and Maddy have a strong connection and very shortly she begins to realize Christian is still there, if she can only help him find his way out of the darkness.**Spoilerish** The rest of the story takes the reader on a fascinating journey that frankly, I don't have words to describe. Not only does Christian struggle with a serious lack of communication, he's had not a single person to stand up for him. He's almost as angry at how he's been treated as he is at his inability to communicate. Some parts of the book are difficult to take in - such as his cruel and callous treatment by staff members at the asylum.When Maddy decides to throw her support behind Christian, she battles with guilt over whether or not she's compromising the principles of her faith. Thankfully, her faith does give some leeway within the foundational beliefs to allow her to hear from God for herself. Once she has this connection, she decides to throw her lot in with Christian and do whatever she can to help him, but all along the way, she questions whether or not she's making the right choice. Ms. Kinsale has created a very strong character in Christian - possibly the most determined Hero I've ever encountered. To say that Christian drags Maddy kicking and screaming into helping him would be an understatement. Even with his massive disability, he has such drive and determination, heaven help anyone who dares stand in his way. And yet, he desperately needed Maddy. She was an angel sent from heaven. The first time we hear Christian say "Maddy Girl," it's over the top sweet.It is not smooth sailing. Christian has a competency hearing coming up, he has unethical relatives, a mother who doesn't understand him, so much prejudice against his "sickness" - but he has Maddy Girl and two friends who stick with him through thick and thin. The bottom line is that we find we have several major conflicts - Christian's disability is the primary conflict, but Maddy's religious beliefs are the secondary conflict constantly vying for first place, which affects the third conflict - she's head over heels in love with Christian. Who wouldn't be? I'm rooting for him all the way, even though one might say the life he led previous to the stroke, was not the thing at all. The results of that life come back to bite him on the butt big time and he nearly loses his Maddy Girl.Truth: I've got about 1800 books on my Kindle with approximately 1300 of that number being historical romance novels - many authored by the best of the best. Having said that, this book is probably among the top 5 and perhaps the #1 of all those romance novels - at least that's how I'm feeling at the moment.
Ive just started to get into regency romances and have read several "classics" from different 'best of lists'. I noticed this novel came up on several lists and decided to give it a read. It is by far superior to all I've read thus far. It was heart-pounding, beautifully written and now one of my instant favorites. The two main protagonists are so thoughtfully and thoroughly crafted. Although the heroine frustrates me in the second half of the book and I sometimes don't quite understand her, I think the hero is masterfully crafted. Some reviewers who gave this less than five stars complained that it was hard to read - that's the point. The novel moves very quickly from her (Maddy's) perspective to his (Christian's), but it is in Christian's perspective; one that is seriously disabled by stroke, who has a hard time hearing, understanding and articulating language, where we see the author's true gift for prose. The reader is MEANT to be as frustrated as the hero in understanding what others are saying. We are allowed to see into the depth of his mind and his consciousness. We are suppose to struggle to understand, just as he does. It takes us to another level of reading that I have really not seen in other authors. Especially in this genre. This was far beyond some other historical romances and I would put it up there (maybe not equal, but not far behind) to other classics, such as Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre). My only complaint would when the plot turns close to the end **spoiler** where Maddy writes her letter and agrees to have it published. After coming to Christian's defense so many times and staying by him so he would not be embarrassed, I could see her wishing to leave, but would not see how could she come to shame him - even if she is herself ashamed. That part seemed out of character - but it also led to such a heart wrenching confrontation in the Quaker Meeting House - something that was so beautiful, heartbreaking and exquisite that I can't bring myself to give it anything less than five stars. Highly recommend (and I never write reviews, so you know how much I loved it).

This book took my emotions to places I've never experienced in reading before.I love Historical Regency romance...I love sexy gorgeous unattainable Dukes, only Dukes !I love strong heroine with depth and character...I love passionate, beautiful non-porno love scenes...This book lived up to its hype of being hailed as "one of the greatest love stories of all time"Loved Christian and his Little thee thou Duchess, Maddy.I truly think this is Laura Kinsales' master piece. I'm 20+ years to the party but ...it just goes out to prove that her wonderful work is timeless. A wonderland beautiful story about redemption, adversity, love and triumphs.I saved so many favorite passages and always come back to them whenever I feel like visiting this story.You don't want to miss this one!
