We learn a bit about Reacher's background. In this episode Reacher is nearly invincible which I didn't mind at all.I received a review copy of "Night School" by Lee Child (Random House – Delacorte) through NetGalley.com.
I’ve read all 20 Jack Reacher novels, written by Lee Child. I jumped at the chance to evaluate copy of his newest book. You don’t read 20 of anything unless you really like the characters, and “Night School†is no different. Taking place back in the mid-90’s Military Police Major Jack Reacher is reassigned to go back to school – but it isn’t what anyone thinks. It’s really just a cover to investigate a possible act of treason and terrorism. Reacher teams up with his old colleague Sgt. Frances Neagley and a group of new folks representing the FBI, CIA and the national Security Council to find out what is happening and how to stop it. The best part of a mystery is finding out what happens, so I won’t spoil anything, but Jack Reacher does his usual thing and in the end prevails in the usual Reacher fashion. The interaction between Neagley and Reacher, along with the other team members is entertaining.That’s the good part, now the part that isn’t quite as good. I like Reacher novels because over the years he has been consistent - Jack Reacher is a really interesting character – keeps a clock in his head – always know exactly what time it is. Calculates the physics of a punch before he throws it, etc. In this book, Reacher is a bit more superficial. There is a lot less of Reacher’s thought process in this book and I felt it made the book a bit less fun to read. In fact, I can only give it “4 Stars†because it’s good – very good, in fact… but it lacks a bit of what makes Reacher novels so enjoyable.Reacher fans will love it. Folks new to the series will enjoy it, as well. I enjoyed it. I just wish Lee Child done a bit more to keep Reacher’s character as unique and entertaining as he has done in the past.
I've been a Lee Child fan since reading my first Jack Reacher novel, so you can imagine my disappointment when I began Night School and discovered it wasn't the old ex-Army Reacher. Night School is set in the era before Reacher left the Army. The story itself is okay, good even, but not the independent Reacher we've come to know. To be sure, some of the elements are there such as his impeccable logic, but it just doesn't have the same Reacher feel. Does my disappointment mean I'll stop buying Child's novels? No, it just means I'll scrutinize them much closer and won't buy them on a pre-release basis.
Wow. I have been an avid fan of Lee Child and have read every single Jack Reacher novel he has written and have waited eagerly for each new one to come out. I just love Jack Reacher, with all his faults and oddities, he is a true character and worthy of the fame he has garnered. So I was not only disappointed, but actually shocked at how disappointing this book was. The characterization was totally flat, the story line was so boring it was almost non existent, and I actually had a hard time finishing the book. I really didn't care how it ended, I just wanted it to be over.Mr. Child, your fans depend on you for high quality, exciting adventures with developed characters and story lines that make it hard to put the book down. If this is what future publications are going to be like, you are going to disappoint the millions of us who are devoted to Jack and faithful to you. Don't do it. Please go back to the quality you originally delivered.
I love Reacher novels, and own them all, but this one was flat-out boring. Normally I can't stop reading and end up losing sleep because I have to know what happens next. With "Night School" I had to force myself to keep going. I'd suggest skipping this one, or waiting till later once the price has dropped.
For such a solid writer, this was a mediocre read. A Reacher who was much more arrogant and dismissive than usual, and a plot where way too much that went wrong was easily fixed. I have read all his books because I liked the protagonist and his mindfuless, but that may unfortunately be eroding.
I've read all 20 Reacher books. This one is differerent. I don't like the stilted writing style or the way Reacher is portrayed. The dialog between Reacher and the other characters sounds like something out of a Tom Cruise movie :-(
It must be difficult to keep coming up with new entries in a series that keep readers` interests alive and while maintaining character integrity. Over time mr child has been less than successful in the endeavor, in my opinion. This prequel was slow motion and did little to paint additional nuances to Reacher` s character. Parenthetically it was a complete sellout for Tom cruise to play Reacher

About the Author
Matteo Pistono is a writer, practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, and author of In the Shadow of the Buddha: Secret Journeys, Sacred Histories, and Spiritual Discovery in Tibet. Pistono’s images and writings about Tibetan and Himalayan cultural, political, and spiritual landscapes have appeared in BBC's In-Pictures, Men's Journal, Kyoto Journal, and HIMAL South Asia. Pistono was born and raised in Wyoming where he completed his undergraduate degree in Anthropology from the University of Wyoming, and in 1997 he obtained his Masters of Arts degree in Indian Philosophy from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. After working with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. on Tibetan cultural programs, Pistono lived and traveled throughout the Himalayas for a decade, bringing to the West graphic accounts and photos of China’s human rights abuses in Tibet. He is the founder of Nekorpa, a foundation working to protect sacred pilgrimage sites around the world, and he sits on the Executive Council of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, Rigpa Fellowship, and the Conservancy for Tibetan Art and Culture. Pistono and his wife, Monica, divide their time between Colorado, Washington D.C., and Asia.

In the Shadow of the Buddha is a most worthy addition to this body of literature.Matteo Pistono began with a plan to write a biography of Terton Sogyal, a highly realized holy man and revealer of hidden teachings, who lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was a close advisor to the thirteenth Dalai Lama during years when Tibetan sovereignty was threatened by both the British and Chinese and used his considerable spiritual powers to guard against these threats. The book provides beautifully written and inspiring accounts of important events in the life of Terton Sogyal and of the author's visits to the places where those events took place.During his decade of arduous travels in the Land of Snows, Matteo Pistono lived in a monastic encampment, sought out Buddhist masters and hermits, received advanced teachings, learned special practices, and witnessed the seemingly miraculous. He also encountered evidence of human rights abuses, including destruction of homes, imprisonment, torture, and even death meted out to monks, nuns, and others whose only crimes were to practice their religion, peacefully protest, express devotion to the Dalai Lama, or merely decline to denounce him. Before long he was spiriting evidence of these violations out of Tibet so that they could be seen by policy makers in Washington, Europe, and the UN. At the same time he was bringing in messages from the Dalai Lama. These were, to say the least, perilous activities, and the book often reads like the page-turning mystery thrillers of Eliot Pattison - except that this is no fiction.So we have a biography of Terton Sogyal, accounts of Chinese government abuses, and of the adventures undertaken to expose them. Interwoven with these elements is the author's description of his own spiritual journey as a student and practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism during the decade that he took to research and write the book. Central to this spiritual journey is his struggle to reconcile anger at the actions of the Chinese government with his efforts as a Buddhist to practice meditative equanimity and cultivate compassion. We all know that many wars are about religion. Reading this book and acting, even with only minutes of commitment, could preempt a larger problem in the future. Through Matteo's courage and devotion we can be moved to turn the tides of the future for religious freedom in Tibet-the freedom that we are so blessed to have in our own country-a gift we are able to share if we choose to do so. The more people who shed light and speak out against religious persecution help to keep the flames of freedom burning. The more that the perpetrators know how many eyes and ears are (and growing, I pray) on them the less likely they are to push further. This is a time-sensitive issue as the next Dalai Lama has been chosen through means by which the Buddhists have no say; chosen for political reasons not religious, and not in the historic fashion as all previous Lamas have been chosen. Imagine, if you are Christian, the U.S. government deciding that they will be the ones to choose the next Pope (I'm not Catholic but I respect the freedom for anyone to practice this religion and how the church chooses their leader through their own tradition). This is not just about religion but about basic human rights which are necessary for the survival of our species. I pray that through reading this book, no matter what name you call your god, you will be moved through your heart to help others be free to name and praise their god openly and peacefully. Bless you, Matteo, for your courage, your book, and your work have made the world a better place and, hopefully, an even better one in the future. Oh, and it's a great read!
Highly recommend. The author weaves Tibet's historical struggles with more recent challenges observed during his visits and with direct contacts with Tibetans. Excellent book shedding light on the oppession Tibet faces even today. Conversations with the author has with HH Dalai Lama, Richard Gere, and Nancy Pololski are reminders of that this continues to be a current issue of concern for human rights.
This book is as close to life-changing as one can get through the written word. The journey clearly was for the author, but I find that I am more mindful in my daily life for having read it. The book flows well, is beautifully written, and at times reads more like a fast-paced spy novel than a memoir.If you're interested in Buddhism, the Tibetan people, or China's nefarious agenda in Tibet, I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is definitely one that will remain in my collection for a second read in the future.

This book is full of interesting information and is exactingly well researched. The author is intelligent and well above average both as a researcher and a writer. But, in general, any book that has the word Dictionary in the title, and is not searchable by word and definition is about as useful as a shovel without a handle.
I was a little iffy at first, seeing that this book had no reviews. But it turns out that this book is well written, with a good introduction to the world of Victorian Slang, and a great dictionary.

I was in the mood for a good, wholesome, feel-good love story. Every once in a while Sparks delivers. The last book of his I picked up, "The Longest Ride" was one of those feel goody types so I had high hopes for this one. The first couple chapters of "The Best of Me" were ok...just Ok. After the first few chapters the story quickly went downhill. I personally felt it was confusing the way it introduced new character viewpoints each chapter. Sometimes this can work in the author's favor but in this case we never really got to know any characters in depth.Also, without giving too much away I felt storylines were recycled from other well known novels of his - i.e., parents don't approve of leading lady's boyfriend, fight ensues, couple breaks up, leading lady moves on (but not entirely), long separation & then reunion, mother of leading lady shows up at house to talk some sense into leading lady (but maybe to encourage her to follow her own path)....sounding familiar? *cough*The Notebook*cough*.Semi-Spoiler Alert!!No happy ending here...not even a semi-happy ending where they grow old and die together. The ending to this story was rushed and sadly predictable and left a lot to be desired. "Best of Me" was definitely not Nicholas Sparks best work. I'm surprised by how many 4 and 5 stars it received.
Nicholas Sparks never disappoints. This is a poignant story about chances: random chances, lost chances, and second chances. A story of families, relationships, regrets and redemption. About once-in-a-lifetime, enduring love; lost, found, denied, and eventually recaptured. It's a story of honor, duty, responsibility, purpose, selflessness, and fate. This book will make you fall in love; will break your heart, will make you cry, and just maybe, it might even bring a little smile to your heart at the end. What more could you ask for! This is "the best of" Nicholas sparks!
I like to read a Sparks novel occasionally as a break from more serious literature. They seem like well written romances with good plots and characters. However, the endings have become predictable and never 100% happy. From the beginning of this book, I kept thinking about how it would end and if someone would get killed.Dawson and Amanda had been high school sweethearts even though they came from "opposite sides of the tracks" in Oriental, NC. They split up due to pressures by her parents. She ended up married to a dentist and they had children. Dawson went to prison for four years for accidentally killing the town's doctor when driving a vehicle. Later he worked on offshore rigs in the Gulf.Dawson and Amanda met up again over 20 years later when Tuck a mutual friend and father figure in Oriental died. His will requested that they scatter his ashes at a cottage that had been owned by him and his deceased wife. Two of Dawson's cousins hated him and made multiple attempts on his life.At some point the ending became very predictable and typical of Sparks. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it. At least up to the predictable ending.
If you ever had a first love that got away, this is the book. It was a real page turner. It brought out a range of emotions, including tears. I really enjoyed this book. I read reviews where people said it was predictable. Maybe so at times, but I say it is a true romantic story. He wrote it with other characters involved in the story, and left us to fill in the details of their lovemaking. He tells a story, not just focusing on jumping in and out of bed. I found this very refreshing. I've read 2 more books by him since this read. I've found an author who actually tells a story.At first I thought I knew how the ending would be, but boy was I wrong. A funeral brings two high school lovers back together, but only for a short time. An old man's last wishes, a bar fight, car accident, and a one in a million chance of getting a transplant will keep you reading this book untill the very end.I'm not a big romance novel fan, but I tend to find myself enjoying Nicholas Sparks books anyway. I love how his stories are really well developed and thought-provoking, rather than just revolving around the physical aspects of love as many other romance novels do. "The Best of Me" had to be one of Nicholas Sparks' best novels yet. Yes, the basic theme is one that's been done over and over again - two high school sweethearts having to let go because real life interferes, and then running into each other again years later. But this story is so much more than that. You find yourself really sympathizing with the characters and understanding how difficult their situations are. Nicholas Sparks captures and holds your attention until the very end in this book, and this story is one that I'm sure will stick with me for a long time.The Best of Me follows the struggles of Amanda as she must decide between her imperfect family and her first love, Dawson. Her decision is heart-wrenching, and the events that ensue will inevitably bring tears to your eyes. Amanda discovers what really matters in life, and Dawson is able to truly give the best of himself to Amanda in a shocking manner.In true Nicholas Sparks fashion, The Best of Me is simultaneously heart-warming, melancholy, and suspenseful. How Dawson gives life to Amanda is sure to change your view on what is important to you.
It was corny and unrealistic. His books have gone from romantic to nauseating over the years and this is no exception. Amanda is childish. So she has problems in her marriage, who doesn't? So as soon as she sees her first love runs into his arms. And Dawson, never dated, had sex ever again because he never got over Amanda. Seriously?! Finished it because I did purchase it but oh no. What a waste!!!

I enjoyed this book. I read the last several chapters without pause. However, I understand those who had trouble with it. It is very... Deliberate.One might even venture to say much of it is over-stated - and in fact, Shade comments on the repetition in one of those later chapters. The carefulness is the comfort part of this hurt/comfort trope, and it works well, but it will read as tedious to some. That's fine - not every book is for every reader. There's nothing wrong with that.I generally prefer a faster-paced story. The cause of Jason's damage is never overtly stated, and IMHO it doesn't tie in all that well with the acceptance of AI Companions, and AI personhood in general; it wasn't necessary for the romance. (But it could have been dropped in here and there had there been less verbose carefulness. And I would have loved it in that case.)
I loved the slow burn in this book he didn't rush up until the end. The book was written really well in my opinion, however I really wanted another 150 to 200 pages and I think he could have. I really want to read about a lot of Jason's firsts and felt a little cheated at the end. Over all it was a great book hit a lot of my favorites just wish it was longer! I wanted more from the three.
I can't remember the last time I was actually able to read through a book without much difficulty. I usually get distracted part way through, but this book had my full attention from the moment I started to read it and I had a really hard time even putting it down for 5-10 minutes.I love the subject matter that this book deals with, and I really appreciate how well each character has been crafted and written about. I found myself getting rather attached to each character and feeling on the edge of my seat as the story progressed.This book is definitely one that I am going to read and re-read on a regular basis. It deals with a very important topic that so many people live with, and it doesn't downplay or make light of it, but it deals with it in a very relatable way. It feels like a warm, comforting hug while reading and it is such a fantastic read. I honestly can't say enough good things about it and I would 120% love to read more books by this author.
Woah. So much here. Kept my mind ticking while I read it, and my heart hoping for their healing, quite aside from whether or not their partnership became sexual or not. Full of thoughts, full of feelings. I push this book on everyone I can.
I bought this book because I'm an instant sucker for trauma recovery and ai/robots, so I was pretty much destined to love it. Wayne has such an uncomplicated, joyful way of writing that really charmed me from the first page. My only complaint about this book is that I wish it had been longer--I wasn't ready to end it! I could easily read three or four more books about these characters.
A sweet and gentle story of a traumatized human, an equally traumatized AI, and an AI with a chronic need to help people helping each other with recovery and falling in love along the way.
I loved this book - full of beautiful characters and a rich world. The relationship was so beautiful to watch unfold. I highly recommend it!
Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted my copy of this book. I have to admit, when I read the blurb for this book, I had no idea what AI meant, it did not click. Once it's made clear, very early on?? Well, now it made total sense! Jason is suffering from PTSD and Chase and Shade are his AI companions to help with that. But not only Jason suffers, Shade does too and its left to Chase to keep everyone together. Very quickly, you lose the fact that Chase and Shade are, for want of a better word, robots. They feel as much as humans do, they want all the same things. The fact that we lose that, is a testament to the skill of the author, it really is. Just as Jason suffers from his torture, Shade suffers from the modifications made to him against his wishes. Shade may NEVER fully recover, but being around Jason, broken though he is, begins to bring Shade out of his trauma, just as Shade and Chase bring Jason out of his. I have a soft spot for 3 way relationship, especially if they are hot and heavy. This book is NOT hot and heavy. This book is not about that. this book is EMOTIONALLY heavy, for all three men. You feel for both Shade and Jason every time something sets them off, something triggers for them. And you feel for Chase, trying to keep them all together. And you feel it, right here in your heart when Jason finally begins to let Chase and Shade in. There has been a huge amount of research into PTSD for this book. You can't get the depth of felling and emotion across without a massive amount of work. Very VERY well done, Aidan Wayne! I haven't read anything by Wayne before, but the author is on my hit list now! 5 stars **same worded review will appear elsewhere**

Overall, it's helpful, recent, and inexpensive. It suffers from being from a single perspective. For instance, she recommends avoiding the JR pass exchange at the airport because of long lines, whereas I went arrived in the middle of the day and there was essentially no line. But even recommending it in the first place probably helped me out. There are some good itineraries, good food recommendations, good activities, certainly at least as a starting point. It gave me at least enough to go on to feel confident about going to a strange land.
I felt lost and anxious about planning a trip to Japan for the first time. Then I read this book and was able to form an itinerary based on the places and suggestions found in the book. Looking forward to my trip now without the anxiety.
Short and sweet travelguide, with a lot of tips and recommendations! From the best food to the nicest shrines - everything is mentioned in this guide. I really liked the fact that even everyday things like visiting a japanese toilet are explained (even with the essential kanji, so we can easily find out, where the women‘s bathroom is). The author even included a free packing list and a two week itinerary.Overall it‘s a nice and handy guide to use.
