I just started using this, after spending a lot of time first with Wilhelm and then also with the big red Ritsema/Sabbadini/Eranos I Ching. Huang is a really welcome addition, giving historical background on some of the lines and hexagrams that is missing from the other two translations, and also a clear, well-thought-out translation. I find I'm using all 3 versions at once: Wilhelm for its smooth, familiar prose; Huang for its attention to accuracy, and explanations of historical references in the readings; and Ritsema/Sabbadini for a sense of the alternate meanings of a given character.The Kindle version has a good Table of Contents and deals well with Chinese characters. I'm using an ipad.Recommended.
Since I don't speak or read Chinese, I can't honestly judge how accurate a translation is. But having some familiarity with the other translations, I feel this one is the real deal. To begin with, the translator is a native Chinese speaker. So he is likely to understand how words are intended to be used at a certain point of history as well as the literal meaning. Those who translate literally always do a poor, unreliable job.The most popular translation goes from Chinese to German to English. I have to question how much is lost in translation. This book refers to those other translations and tells the reader why they're wanting.This translation is easy to read and understand. The Ten Wings are in italics. That makes them easy to tell where the other text ends and the Wings begin.Moreover, each hexagram is thoroughly discussed and explained.I like to read several translations but for most purposes, this is my favorite. By the way, the Kindle version is just great. You can easily go back to the index and click on the hexagram or section you want to read. And, of course, you can search for specific topics.Highly recommended.-- Susanna K. Hutcheson
I'm giving this four stars because it is obviously a masterful work and I would not want in any way to denigrate it. For my personal value it was a three and I returned it. This is my completely subjective opinion, from a brief trial reading the book. It's a comparative view between this and the Wilhelm & Baynes edition and the R.L. Wing edition, and others may have taken more time and come to a different view.This edition seems comparable to an expansion of the Commentary in the back of the Wilhelm & Baynes edition, with more detailed and annotated explanations about the relationships of the lines. It's like it says, "This is the situation, here are the elements and how they relate to each other." However, it doesn't draw a moral, tell a story, come to a conclusion, or provide much direction compared to the Wilhelm & Baynes edition.So, something about different modes of thought? Like, here's the ideogram, here are the relationships, so, given general knowledge of the workings of society at large, the story of action here is obvious. Versus here's the noun, here's the verb, in this particular situation, here's the story. I have no idea (or ideograms).The R.L. Wing edition, on the other hand, is much more contemporary in its language, and much more moralizing and prescriptive than the Wilhelm & Baynes edition.It may be worth noting that R.L. Wing is a pseudonym. If you look at the front matter on the original 1970'ish Doubleday edition, it lists about a dozen people in the acknowledgements. In the latest edition is just says "many people contributed; you know who you are."My spouse reads the R.L. Wing edition; I read Wilhelm & Baynes, and we both interpret each others casts. I find that the R.L. Wing edition pretty much follows the thought of the Wilhelm & Baynes edition. One thing that the R.L. Wing edition does is provide three different contexts for each hexagram: social/civic, business, and interpersonal relationship. Over time I've come to accept the R.L. Wing edition as valid and useful. However, the Wilhelm & Baynes edition for me strikes the right balance between situation/implication/image/metaphor and overt direction.I would really like to know how the R.L. Wing edition was synthesized. I'm thinking houseboats in Sausalito harbor, with Alan Watts and Steward Brand drifting in and out like the fog and smoke. Not to say that there isn't a full on scholarly effort there.For the book in review here, I guess it would be valuable for people who wanted more of the pure situation/implication approach, as well as detailed insight into the amazing inner workings and movements of the lines.
It is a wonderful book, for anybody who wants to study the I Ching. I love the fact that the author's intention is to be as close as possible to the original text without adding his interpretation. In my opinion, it is specially key when translating ancient sacred manuscripts that go beyond any historic time line and are as current today as they were thousands of years ago. This helps the reader have a more pure and direct experience with the text.
This is one of the very best I Ching books for the serious student. Karl Jung would have loved and used it. But if you are interested in entertainment only this might prove pedantic for you! So you heavy heavy I Ching devotees, buy this one for your bookshelf!

Taoist Master Huang has created a masterpiece with his version of the I Ching. His perspective has added a richness to my study and his version is now my go-to for insight and inspiration. I could not recommend this version more highly.
Having been a died in the wool Wilhelm/Baynes person forever, I finally took a look over the Huang when a friend pushed me into it.He not only does his own excellent scholarship, but compares his own work to W/B and other translations, and is very open about how he comes to his own conclusions. A brilliant book for either practical divination or serious study.

Whenever I pick up a Chadwick novel, I know I'm in for a real treat. I always learn something I hadn't known before, even if it's something small.This is the story of Ida de Tosney, who was briefly the mistress of Henry II and her life thereafter as the wife of Roger Bigod.Prior to reading this book, I knew of only one mistress that was important to Henry II for many years: Rosamund Clifford. I assumed that he was so distraught over her death that he never sought out anyone else for a long term relationship. Ida de Tosney was a ward of Henry's who caught his eye when she reached the age young women do when their bodies start to physically change. She quickly became his favoured mistress and even had a son by him. Ida, however, wasn't content to remain Henry's mistress until he tire of her. She knew that when he found "greener pastures" he would move on and marry Ida off to whoever he deemed worthy. So she took matters into her own hands and convinced King Henry to marry her off to Roger Bigod, a man to whom she was attracted and could find herself in love with.Roger Bigod, however, spent most of his life trying to stay in the good graces of the Plantagenet family after his father - Hugh Bigod - participated in a rebellion led by King Henry's eldest son Henry. Hugh was stripped of everything and Roger had to work hard to return to King Henry's graces as well as fend off the machinations of his step mother and step brothers who wanted their fair share of Hugh's titles and properties and incomes.Roger and Ida live well into old age (for that time period) and have a large happy family together.While I do enjoy a rousing good action story - from the likes of Bernard Cornwell and others - I also like the slower steady pace that Chadwick brings to historical fiction. You simply fall into the story and forget the 21st Century plugging along around you.
Early English society only recognized men as persons having rights. Once a young woman reached marriagable age, her father or whoever is her official sponsor can arrange her marriage however it best suits him or her estate/family. A woman has little or no say in her future... History also has overlooked instances of overzealous kings demanding sexual privileges for their pleasures. Court favors, societal mores... there was little young women could do to protect themselves from either their family nor the sovereigns demands. What can they do to cope with this issue? How do they fit into court life? So many intriguing tales behind the curtains of court.
This is my favourite novel so far in the Marshal series. Although not the primary focus, William Marshal is portrayed through the eyes of Roger Bigod, the male protagonist of this novel. It was great to see Marshal from this viewpoint, and it solidified everything the reader was shown about him in the first two novels (The Greatest Knight and The Scarlet Lion). It was interesting to see him from an outsider's perspective.One of the main reasons I enjoyed this novel so much was due to the female protagonist, Ida de Tosney. It was only recently discovered that Ida was the mother to Henry II's illegitimate son, William Longespee, when a document was found where he refered to "Countess Ida, my mother". By this point Ida's husband had been granted the earldom of Norfolk, thus giving her the title of Countess. This novel brings to light the struggle that Roger went through in order to regain the earldom that was in dispute after his father's death.Throughout the novel the reader watches Ida mature from a naive girl whose virginity is taken by a demanding King into a strong woman with a devoted husband and budding family. In many ways this is a coming of age story set in medieval times. Ms Chadwick did an excellent job of portraying Ida's courage--it was not a fierce courage like that of Eleanor of Aquitaine for example--but rather a quiet courage that allowed her to face each trial that life brought her way and try to make the best of it. In truth she seems like a remarkable woman, and I was glad to receive this insight into her life.
Elizabeth Chadwick has authored two historical novels that I really enjoyed, two tales of the heroic knight, William Marshall. These novels traced the arc of his career from when he was younger to his twilight--"The Greatest Knight" and "The Scarlet Lion." When I saw that Chadwick had penned yet another novel from that era, "For the King's Favor," I felt impelled to purchase this volume. And I made a good choice.Here, we have a novel at the same period of time as the William Marshall works--King Henry II and his sons--"The Young King," Richard, and John (as well as Henry's spirited wife Elinor of Aquitaine). We begin with Henry taking a young woman, Ida de Tosney, as his mistress. He treated her pretty well; she bore him a son (whom she loved--but because of whom Henry created great pain for Ida); she felt the tension between being the King's mistress, with all the benefits that came with that, and having a reputation as a debauched woman.Then, there is the tale of Roger Bigod, whose father had played fast and loose with various factions. He ended up on the losing end of the effort to keep Henry II from the Kingship. Roger, against his father, allied with Henry--but the questions about his ultimate loyalty remained. There were internal family disputes--with his stepmother warring with him over control of his father's estate upon his father's death.The stories of Ida and Roger come together, and--after having to work through the intricacies--they wed. The story then focuses on the challenges that they face--with Henry II always in the picture, and his support of Roger was always ambiguous. Over time, the tale plays out, in a pretty satisfying manner.The novel gives a sense of the historical characters--Elinor, Henry, Richard, and John of the "royals." Roger and Ida. William Marshall even shows yup in this volume! Characters are well drawn; the plot moves nicely.I found this a very nicely done piece of historical fiction.

Keep in mind that Kaufman offers these works from a decidedly modern perspective and in an extremely pragmatic fashion. Devoid of footnotes and references save for the brief prefaces Mr. Kaufman provides them as serious study guides nonetheless. Highly recommended Reading for strategy enthusiasts.

I'm a fan of Kobold Press. I think they make high quality RPG materials and as a D&D player/DM, I find their products a great addition to my games. I've been playing D&D since the old AD&D system came out in the 70's. I really got excited when TSR would put out supplements that enhanced our gaming world. WoTC seems to take a slightly different approach. While I love Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, and Volo's Guide to Monsters, these are all multi-faceted books. You get some player options, interesting lore, and often new monsters, but none of these books definitively compares to the likes of a Monster Manual II, Fiend Folio, or Deities & Demigods. I get it, they rely on the massive third party community to do this. This is great. I love the idea of getting great work from other authors, and not just WoTC. But, a lot of this material is PDF only. I really like having the book at the table with me. I still play almost exclusively in an "analog" fashion. AS the DM, I bring my books and binder prepared with tabs and bookmarks for my monsters I'll be using. As the player, I show up with my PHB and character sheet, pencils, dice and that's it. I don't use a laptop, tablet, or phone. I know, PDFs can be printed, but artists worked so hard to make beautiful illustrations, and the editors took their time to meticulously pour over the book so it "looks" like the intended vision that I feel a B&W printout just doesn't do the work justice.So, why all this rambling before truly reviewing this book? Well, that's simple. If you're inclined to like the books like I do, then this will be a very treasured purchase. If you don't really play that way, then it might be a bit of a hefty price to shell out.Th book itself is gorgeous. The size is just lightly larger than the WoTC official books, so It fits on the shelf next to them nicely. The binding is solid and the hardcover is a fine quality with a glossy finish. The pages themselves are a nice heavy weight. This may or may not be to your taste. It means the book is thick and heavy. Compared to the Monster Manual, the page count is higher, but not twice that of the MM. However, the book itself is about twice as thick when you place them side by side on their backs. I like the thick paper. It makes it less likely to tear (my AD&D 2E books where terrible for tearing) and they should hold up for years to come.So, how about the content? Well, if you've purchased, or at least look through the Kobold Press Tome of Beasts, then you'll find a bit of a contrast here. While ToB seemed to have a lot of Fey creatures in it, the CC feels much more diverse. I have both books, and really like both of them, but will probably use the CC more often because I can get some really strange and unexpected creatures my players won't know. The layout of the book is what you'd expect. However, there's a nice addition to the appendices that I find just fantastic. They list all of the monsters in the book by type, CR, and terrain. I love it. When building an encounter as the DM, I can easily look up the terrain section to find what would naturally work with my adventure, then cross reference with the CR and easily find new and exciting foes to challenge the players.A few nitpicks. Some of the art is a little inconsistent. I really enjoy the art in the book, but a few will seem like they are just a little "off" from the design standard. This is an excessively small complaint since I like all of the art work. I'm just adding it here because it's something I noticed. I'll also address the usual complaint about CR. The book has new monsters of all varying levels of difficulty. So, variety isn't an issue. The issue is really the CR system itself. I use it. I think it works pretty well. But, sometimes you can get a situation where a lower CR monster seems way harder when used in actual gameplay (or vice versa). This doesn't really bother me. Maybe because I've had experience with older version that really had no good way to demonstrating to the DM or the players how deadly an encounter might be. I feel the DM should be able to creatively adjust "on the fly" if the challenge needs to go up or down. I also like to keep in mind that people are all different. The author may have intended a creature to be used a certain way and then indeed the CR would be well set. But, the reader of the book might have another interpretation and play the creature differently, thus wildly affecting the accuracy of the CR. Let's be honest, both Tiamat and the Tarrasque have a CR of 30. Are they really equal? I would argue no. The Tarrasque, while excruciatingly difficult to defeat, can be defeated. Tiamat, on the other hand, really can not. Oh sure, with epic characters and a huge party, yes. But if we're talking a standard party of 4-6 high level players, Tiamat would almost assuredly kill them all (at least if the DM is playing her properly). So, to conclude the CR rant, I find no fault with this book for CR.In summary, this is an fantastic expansion to your list of monsters to use in your 5e campaign. The books is high quality in both substance and production. I highly recommend adding it to your RPG library.
This book is simply an amazing supplement for your inventory of monsters to launch at your players. Ranging anywhere from a human swarm bar brawl, to a ghost dragon, to lich variants, you'll have a wide array of encounters from which to choose. The artwork is great, and the binding solid. This is a must-have for every DM in the 5e world.
The Creature Codex is an excellent product. It's chopped full of kewl monsters and nice illistrations. My top ten faves: 10. Ahuizotl ( semi-aquatic beast from Aztec myth with an awesome tail claw, perfect for pick pocketing or drowning a hapless grappled wizard.) 2. Ahu-Nixta ( it's just kewl ) 3. Alp( a shapeshifting fey empowered by your fears) 4. Eye of the Gods. ( It's an angel.) 5. Arcamag ( it's a magic tick that helps and hurts spell-casters) 6. Arcanaphage( looks like a giant sea slug and eats magic.) 7. Bar Brawl( just some kewl mechanics for a regular hazard that your party might encounter). 8. Exploding Toad ( goblin alchemist make them, they are toads that self- destruct in a burst, adds some interest to goblin encounters.) 9. Keg Golem ( it's a Golem and a beer keg, what every party needs.,) 10. Snow hag( an excellent low level boss monster. Also a hag. She pairs well with Beli and Fraughashar from the Tome of Beast, and ice mephits from the monster manual). Most of the monsters are from preexisting mythologies and there is plenty of preexisting folklore to fill in the gaps were the monster folklore might fill incomplete, and most of the monsters feature interesting game mechanics that can change the way that a character party approach encounters, there are however a few misses: dark folk feel undeveloped, kryt feel a bit empty, and ghost boars are just giant boars with the ability to turn ethereal. Still the book is well worth the investment.
Once again Kobold Press has knocked it out of the park with another great collection of unique monsters to unleash in your games of Dungeons and Dragons. I was a huge fan of the Tome of Beasts for 5th edition, and jumped at the first chance to get my hands on this followup. Contained in this book is 400+ new monsters that will bring a great level of challenge to the table and has the players going "Oooh, what's that thing?"This time around the format is a bit better compared to Tome of Beasts, with the layouts being much more clear and every page having its own monster and information about it, with some beasts getting multiple pages as necessary. Also like the previous entry, this book was made with Kobold Press' Midgard campaign setting in mind, but is in no way tethered to that setting and can be used in nearly any D&D scenario you can think of with little exception.Easily worth the price. Double the size and content of the WoTC Monster Manual and at the same cost +/-. Pick this up if you need to expand your roster to unleash on unsuspecting adventurers.
Perfect follow up to tome of beasts. If you are a DM who loves throwing random monsters at your players, this book has exceptional art and original monsters, as well as NPCs. Worth your money! (Back of the book pictured)
