This book brought such a much needed perspective and comfort to me as I navigated through my father's cancer and dying process. The author writes with deep understanding, compassion and intelligence. This book shares people's personal stories and each one touches you deeply. I wish I's read this, many years ago, when my mother was lying, riddled with cancer in a hospice bed. I believe it would have helped me to cope with the process and her subsequent death.At the same time I found this book quite beautiful. The stories, although sad at times are also strangely uplifting, making you see the true beauty of life and the human spirit. A life changing read.
I recommend this book for anyone involved with hospice care... from patients and caregivers to hospice staff members and volunteers. The book is easy to read and is loaded with good, practical information. I enjoyed the stories that addressed the issues faced by hospice patients and their family members. Every aspect of hospice care is covered... from symptom management and medication use to the emotional challenges faced by patients and their caregivers. I wish that I had this book available to me when I started working as a hospice nurse. I checked out the book from my local library and now recommending that my hospice purchase several copies for staff use and to loan out or give to our patients. I can't think of one thing that the book didn't cover. For hospices, this book should be required reading for all new staff. For those considering hospice for themselves or a loved one... this is the only book that you need to buy.

Dying or being with someone who is dying is not something people like to discuss. When my beloved grandfather was suffering, I got my hands on "Living at the End of Life" for the others around him that were suffering . I was curious about the questions it addressed, found it was a quick read, so I cruised through it before passing it on. To be honest I cannot remember a lot of what was in the book, but I clearly remember it made me feel like I could handle this situation, that I could be helpful, and do it with grace. When things came up I wasn't expecting, like needing to wash him, I was ready. I had the courage to do what he needed me to do, because I had knowledge. The book gave me a better perspective on what things were like from his perspective, from my grandma's perspective, and the others involved. I found it so comforting, I gave a copy to a dear friend that was with her 100 year-old-grandmother in her last days and to my mother-in-law when trying to understand why her mother no longer wanted to eat. Both found it very comforting and informative. It is a book everyone should read, but it is especially for someone caring for a loved one during such a demanding time.

OMG! Man, talk about biting off more than you can chew. A whirlwind of emotions and events that feed from the excitement and nerve racking tension that brings this bad boy roaring to life brilliantly. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches and bumps here and there pull you deeper into this raging storyline and hard hitting plot. Throw in all the drama, intrigue, uncertainty, danger and suspense and you have one intense, page turning bombshell that grabs your attention and holds it from start to finish. The characters are complex and so believable it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are so graphically detailed it really pulls this little jewel together beautifully. You have no trouble picturing each scenario as it plays out perfectly. Aurora definitely nailed this bad boy 100% on point with such realism it brings this bad boy roaring life flawlessly. Remarkable job Aurora, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

I received this book as an ARC and I volunteered this review.
I really liked this fantastic book. It had a lot of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what will happen on each page that you turn. Pete and Jessie had a lot to overcome but their love did grow to make the right decisions at the end. You did a wonderful job with this amazing book. Thanks Aurora and keep up the good work for I will be waiting for the next one.
A great western novel. A very unusual story, we’ll done and exciting. The characters were believable and the story also. The female protagonist was quite the pistol and probably should have listened to her mother. Everything will come out perfectly in the end.
Slightly different , wasn’t sure if I was going to like the story...turned out that it was much better than I expected. Getting to know Pete and Jessie made this a wonderful read. Characters and their flaws were so believable. Aurora Hanson is a wonderful author, really like her writing style!!
I loved the main characters! For me they had such rich and strong characters that made the entire story all the more interesting. The choices they made, the actions they took, it was such an amazing adventure to read.
This Historical Western Romance Book was a real page turner with the great character and storyline development which kept me totally captivated as I turned each and every page!
Young girl joins a gang to to avenge her father's death. Gang leader seems half crazy with killing lust. Not my cup of tea but I am sure you will probably enjoy it.

The following notes may contain spoilers.)Plot and Setting: 5 -- Plot has many unique elements, no major holes, and a sense of focus. This is a beautiful, believable retelling of the 'Beauty and the Beast' story, with the added wonder of someone who seeks God experiencing the joy of reading the Bible for the first time. Suspenseful, romantic, and thoroughly enjoyable. Setting is clear, believable, and consistent. The timeline is easy to follow, and I enjoyed the interesting details about what life and law and justice were like in 1300's England.Characters: 4.5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. A lot of wonderful depth and realism to both Ranulf and Annabel, in their pain and joy and confusion. Some minor characters have depth, while others may be slightly stereotyped or simplified. Villainous characters (Tom, Maud, Annabel's family) are fairly one-note, while we get more complex and interesting looks at others, like the coroner. Definite strong points in the relationships between characters. I especially enjoyed how the coroner slyly collected clues about the relationship between Annabel and Ranulf, and Stephen.Mechanics and Writing: 5 -- Few, if any, typos or word errors. One typo (in the very first line!), and 3 spots where paragraph breaks aren't quite right. That's all! Intelligent use of POV (Annabel and Ranulf). Skillful writing that adds to the story. Not to mention obviously well-researched.Redeeming Value: 5 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Annabel learns that the local priest doesn't even own a Bible, but her deep desire to read God's word is met through Ranulf--and she takes joy in learning a true picture of God through the Word. She also overcomes her fear, through faith and love. Ranulf and the coroner learn that mercy and love can sometimes supercede justice, and Ranulf releases some long-held bitterness and lets himself feel loved by God and Annabel. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all, though present: both Annabel and Ranulf are faced with violent attacks and unwanted sexual advances and/or accusations of sexual impropriety, though it avoids becoming graphic or crude.Personal Enjoyment: 5 -- I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. One I'll definitely read again.

Having a beastly human can be challenging and I was pleasantly surprised by how well Melanie set Lord Ranulf up to be both beastly and kind just like the beast.Dialogue: 1/1The dialogue was fitting to the story and the location it was set in. I enjoyed the miscommunications and misunderstandings.Plot/Storyline: .75/1This almost had a full star, but then I realized there was a plot hole at the end. So it got degraded slightly. Overall, however, Melanie did a great job creating a solid plot with many twists and turns. I enjoyed it.Overall Writing Quality: .75/1I am a bit more picky when it comes to traditionally published books, and this one, unfortunately didn't live up to my standards. The formatting of the Kindle version was a little off here and there and I feel like it could have gone through another edit or two before publication.Un-Put-Down-Ability: 1/1Despite those minor details above, this book was almost impossible to put down. I kept wanting to know what would happen next. And am glad I had a day of down time in which to read the whole thing in one day.Conclusion: 4.75/5If you like fresh looks at tales as old as time (come on, I had to do it once), you'll like this one. There is some violence that could be a bit much for some people, but for the most part this book is very clean both in the romance and violence.

I have read three of the author's books in just as many days, and I can't wait to read another! I didn't read them in order because I didn't realize they use the same characters throughout three of the stories. It didn't ruin anything for me since I accidentally read a couple of them in order. haha But The Merchant's Daughter is a stand alone novel and is a great one to check out first. :-)I was pleasantly surprised with how the story was written in a realistic way. The Beast is a lord of a manor and because of that he rules over the town. The Beauty is the daughter of a merchant who died three years ago leaving them destitute. Required to work at the lord's house, Annabel begins to like and respect the scarred, hurting man. Ranulf meanwhile wonders if Annabel's pretty face hides a deceitful side. He soon finds out how different she really is from his deceased wife.One of the best parts of the story was how excited Annabel was about holding and reading a Bible. Her joy and amazement was convicting and uplifting. For some reason it seems easy to lose the wonder of the Word, but we should still react like Annabel did in the story. Plus, I loved how the truths from the Bible were woven throughout the story in such a seamless way.This fairy tale was such a great mix of the traditional story and of the Disney cartoon, too. If you have always enjoyed fairy tales, you should definitely read this book and this series! You won't regret it. :-)

I picked it up hoping to get more information about the "Charlton" background, the sixties superheros like Captain Atom and the Question whose stories Allan Moore proposed to delve into more deeply. And a few of these essays cover this aspect fairly well:"... Ditko, following in the footsteps of his philosophical mentor, applied the same 'law of identity' to the question of good and evil, as in this lecture by Mister A [...] to his television audience: A truth is truth for all, an absolute! To compromise, to give up any part of a truth is to wipe out justice, to choose some evil over the good, to renounce man's means, reason and logic which makes his success and happiness possible! Each man must make his own choice! A is A or anything goes! -- For Ditko, 'reason and logic' are the tools by which humankind knows truth."As with Shakespeare studies, Austen studies, or even Lebowski studies, the reader is struck, sooner or later, with the inadequacy of even the best literary criticism. Some of the interpretations here struck me as depressingly wrong:"... At the end of the story, Moore plays with the notion that, while Rorschach is the detective and Veidt is the culprit, because Veidt's actions had altruistic motivations and Rorschach refuses to support them, perhaps Rorschach is the villain and Veidt the hero after all.""... We see early on that, rough around the edges though he may be, Blake is a man who tries to find answers. Consider that even when he commits an act of rape, he verbalizes his justification as a response to an unasked question. 'C'mon baby,' he tells Sally Jupiter, 'I know what you need. You gotta have some reason for wearin' an outfit like this.' Even in his darkest moments, the Comedian tries to understand."Every such 'false note,' is more than matched by something striking and worthwhile on the other side of the ledger. I particularly liked this bit of gossip in one of the later essays:"... One of the main complaints to be made about Watchmen is that it is depressing, pessimistic, cynical, and nihilistic. In its negative reviews on Amazon.com, this is the most common source of the single star ratings. Even a powerhouse like Grant Morrison can use this complaint to distance himself and his work from the crushing influence of Moore's major work. When Matt Brady from Newsarama asked if a sandwich-sign doomsayer, glimpsed in the opening of the concluding issue of Morrison's Final Crisis mini-series, was intended as a nod to Rorschach, Morrison sarcastically responded, 'Watchmen? What's that? Is that the one where the hero dog gets its head kicked in? Sweet.' It is a hard objection to deny.
I enjoyed the essays on Watchmen. They had some views that I was not aware of and I started to see Watchmen with a different view. I appreciated the fact that, even after all these years you can look at the graphic novel and still learn something. Thank you for an enjoyable read.

I can't say enough good things about this book! A couple of years ago my business attorney suggested I read this book to "pass the time" on my flight back home from a meeting. I was so enthralled with this book I read it from cover to cover in 3.5 hours and to this day I still refer to it.Without spoiling any of the story-line, here's the main moral of the narrative: cut the BS!I feel like everyone living with me here in Los Angeles should read this! So many people here walk around with the "do you know who I think I am" attitude. This book reminded me that when it comes to business, people want to work with people who can get the job done. Period. Strip away the technology, the pomp and circumstance of appearing to be a "big fish in a small pond" and just show up "naked." If you really are worth your weight in salt, you'll get the job or the client because you can do the job better than anyone else.
I purchased this book for a training course at work and I expected to either outright dislike it, or be bored to death. I ended up being drawn in by the author's conversational style and way of conveying his message through telling a story. Instead of merely providing a top 5 or 10 list and then hammering home why this list is better than other lists, Patrick Lencioni takes his readers through a practical investigation and application of his method by translating it into a "business fable." The result is a rather enjoyable and quick read that gave me more to think about than I expected. It was also relevant to my current and future job duties as a CPA, so I appreciated the advice presented in the book. I highly recommend this and his other books on management for others looking to change their leadership and client service game to be more effective.
I am a consultant and I was assigned this book by my management. At first, I really didn't like its story-telling format, but I have to admit that it did make the book a lot easier to read and remember.Once I got past the information being presented as a fable, I have to say that content-wise, I already belonged to the choir that Lencioni is preaching to, I just didn't know it. And his advice can help me push it a little more. So I can highly recommend the book. Leave your numbers, metrics and measurements aside for a bit and read this to help put them in some context.I have worked with big engineering and science clients for several years now, so I'm pretty used to feeling dumb. With a clientele like I've worked with, trying to come across as a know-it-all would be impossible and pathetic. I would be seen through in an instant. So I've long since conquered any fear of feeling inferior or being embarrassed. In these complex, collaborative environments it is critical to get over yourself and focus on the work.What I I've added to my thinking after this read is the attitude of "always be consulting" (to crib a line from Glengarry Glen Ross), or what Lencioni refers to as giving away the business. Don't waste time talking about what you can do, just start doing it. I now see myself, as a consultant, as part of my employer's "offense". At the point I'm called in to a project, we have the ball and our job is to advance it as soon and as far as we can. As long as we can keep doing that, there's no need for sales, which is the "defense" of the business. Sales' job is to get the ball back over to us when we don't have it.When he talks about consultants "doing the dirty work", "taking a bullet" and "making everything about the client" it is this view of my role as an "offensive" player in my business that ties it together for me. These things are done with a smile because they advance the ball, aka the client's interests.
I bought "Getting Naked" as just another Lencioni business novel. I always find them easy to read and make you think, yet often they aren't wow-books that stick with you forever (though The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable (J-B Lencioni Series) was perhaps an exception. Getting Naked however took me quite by surprise and I quite liked it.Of course, the title of the book is odd and doesn't say very much. "Naked" in the title relates to open, honest and transparency. "Getting Naked" refers to running your company in such a way that you are totally open, honest and transparent with your clients. This honest (or vulnerability) can cause a level of trust that can lead to a very high customer loyalty.As with Lencioni's other books, the book is structured around one story and then a clarification of the model that was used in the story. The story is about a manager called Jack who works in a management consultant firm who bought a smaller yet very successful firm. Jack goes in to the smaller firm to learn how they work so that he can integrate that firm back in the larger "mother" firm. However, as he figures out how the other firm works, he discovers that the cultural differences between the traditional larger firm and the "naked consulting" smaller firm are perhaps impossible to overcome. He ends up with an personal identity crisis as he tries to understand the difference in operating principles. Learning the new concepts and coping with the cultural differences leads him into an interesting position with... a surprising end (which I'll leave as a surprise).The second part explains the model behind naked consulting which is based on overcoming the three fears: 1) the fear of losing business, 2) the fear of being embarrassed, and 3) the fear of feeling inferior. Each of these fears can be overcome by following the principles of "naked consulting" such as: "Telling the kind truth" or "entering danger." Each of these principles comes with some examples.As mentioned, the book actually surprised me. It made concrete a few of consulting and coaching which I feel can be very powerful yet incredibly difficult. It also stressed the important of honesty in business rather than just profits and selling, which I also believe in strongly. All of this caused me to enjoy the book more than I actually expected. For this, I wanted to definitively give the book a 5 star review, yet, in the end, I chose only 4. Why? Because thinking it over, I felt the book is also lacking on two fronts. First, it doesn't really deeply clarify the system behavior and assumptions behind these principles, it doesn't go deep enough into the question of "why?". Second, these principles are great, but are incredibly hard to follow. The book, unfortunately, doesn't help very much with how you can adopt these principles but leaves that to the reader. For these reasons, I decided to stay with a 4 (but close to 5) star review. Recommended, especially for anyone who's work it is to offer a service to others.
