I really enjoyed this book. I felt it was well written with enough plot twists to keep me wanting to read more. I enjoyed how the author used supernatural events to build the story line showing how God can and does work through individuals willing to be used by Him. I would have given the book 5 stars if not for one thing. I was saddened by the fact that the Lord's name was taken in vain several times through the book. In my opinion it was not necessary and added nothing to the book that could not have been said in a different manner.

I gave the book two stars because the characterization is realistic. From a literary standpoint, the book is slightly less shallow than a lot of what passes for Christian fiction these days. There are some plot details that are not wholly resolved at the end of the book, but that is typical of authors whose intent is to lure readers into purchasing the next book in the series. The Envelope is written from the perspective of Pentecostal/charismatic Christianity. The salvation experience consists of going forward during a church service, praying a prayer after the preacher, being touched by him on the forehead, and falling to the ground. The Gospel presentation is lukewarm. The book also includes faith healing. I found it disturbing that the Christian characters have no qualms about taking God’s name in vain. The author even mentions that they curse occasionally. It is ironic that she does not provide dialogue for the cursing but has no problem with providing dialogue for misusing the name of God. God’s name is holy. People do not use the names of their parents or friends in this light manner, but the author uses the name of God, whom she probably also calls “Father,” and Jesus, who is the “Friend of Sinners,” as if they have no meaning. “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name” (Ex. 20:7, NIV).

Too much vulgarity, not enough substance!

Sheila and Hank both have traumatic incidents in their pasts that they keep secret, not realizing the roadblocks those secrets are to building their relationship and obeying God.Best bits: I appreciate how Hank's creative-goofball personality and Sheila's more structured personality compliment each other, and certainly neither one is shy about evangelizing -- they sound like a pretty excellent missionary couple. God is very real to the characters, even when, like Hank, they are ignoring him. Hanging on to secret guilt, like Sheila or especially Linda, is clearly a bad thing, as is refusing to obey God. And God uses even unlikely messengers, like a 5 year old girl.Issues: (Possible SPOILERS) I can understand Sheila's reluctance to confess she caused a child's death, though her angry avoidance every time someone even approaches the issue is not inspiring. It makes her come across as cold and harsh more than she would be otherwise. Hank's refusal to speak of his past in missions or the plane crash is harder to understand. I guess he's also weighed down by guilt and shame, but his only fault is in ignoring God's will afterward, which seems small compared to a child's death. Yet Sheila opens up about the accident and starts letting it go before Hank does, stubborn man. Some typos, a few which made me cringe. I feel like the book assumes all readers will have a familiarity with some of the more Pentecostal elements of Christianity, when I'm sure that's not the case. Some of the side plots I'm also not sold on -- the Miguel in love-hate with Sheila bit, the what's-going-on-with-Hank-and-Barbara bit, and Linda's terminal cancer. I'm not convinced these added to the story at all.

There are a lot of twists, turns, and stories within stories held between the pages of "The Envelope." You find yourself having a small niggling remembrance throughout your reading questioning, "but what does the envelope have to do with any of this?"Sheila is a pretty, private, emotionally self contained young woman. She is a Christian above all else. She is a teacher out of her element; perhaps because the Lord has another plan for her. She also has a tragic event in her past that is practically consuming her in its ugly wake.Hank, too a teacher; one you know is out of his element; understandably so as you remember his story; yet the Lord has a plan for Hank that's being fulfilled in his classroom. His love for the Lord is most evident in his life, yet you know he is holding back on his fulfillment of the Lord's plan for him.Again, stories with stories as the Lord weaves the tapestries of many lives in ways that only He can do. Lives that intertwine, sometimes uncomfortably so. You must read "The Envelope" to be reminded..we humans are His work, His plan, His puzzle of life to be placed together, piece by piece.Read and enjoy watching God's awesome powers through

Wow what a book! I've never read this author before, but gracious I love her style! This book, although at times a bit frustrating as it went along and Sheila's secret wasn't told, was nevertheless powerfully inspiring. I found myself pausing to just stare straight ahead as I pondered a deep truth or a point made to one of the characters. My own faith was encouraged and strengthened as I read. Also, I could identify in part some of the pain Sheila was going through. As a charismatic Christian, I loved the scenes in church and was thrilled to read a book that included things I've experienced myself... Healings, spiritual things, etc. This was a book that was hard to put down. I look forward to reading more by this author.
