This is a moderately entertaining little travelogue written by an American who has lived most of his adult life in Great Britain. The author specializes in sarcasm and can best be labeled a curmudgeon, as he travels from place to place from the southernmost coast of England to the tip (Cape Wrath) of Scotland. He visits numerous small villages and larger cities, making pithy observations throughout.Most of his prose is relatively amusing, but he can’t help but throw in political barbs from time to time, from wishing death to various American Republicans to excoriating British Conservative for not spending enormous sums of money on projects which he deems worthy. The book would be more enjoyable without these gratuitous swipes.All in all, it is very light reading and especially amusing if you have spent some time in the British Isles.
By giving Bill Bryson 3 stars, I feel like I am committing a heresy but I've thought about it long and hard and 3 stars is all this book warrants. I love Bill Bryson's writing, especially his travel writing, but this book is just not up to his standard. It feels like it was thrown together simply as a money-making exercise. There is no underlying thread to the book, there is no journey. It's a series of day trips to places he would have been going to anyway. The underlying theme is supposed to be the "Bryson line" but he barely refers to it after the first few pages and the only places he really visits along the line are the two ends. Most of the other places are nowhere near the line. He also includes a lot of material from other books, either it was in the book or it was stuff he had left over after finishing the book. I'm sorry Bill, you can do (and have done) better than this.
Bill Bryson may be wearing out his welcome. My English friends call him "Bryson the Curmudgeon." Unhappy with the US, he becomes a UK citizen and spends his time in rapture over the countryside and scathing about the people. This follow-on to Notes from a Small Island becomes what PT Barnum warned about: "Never follow an elephant act with another elephant act." In places Bryson is dead-on accurate. I know because I've visited some of the same out of the way places and pubs. But in other places he's simply mean. Maybe it's creeping age.
A very good opening and close were largely out of synch with the rest of the tone of the book. I have read and enjoyed many of the author's books beginning with Notes From a Small Island which I purchased at a small independent bookstore in Manchester England. Time has not mellowed the author, I did not find him to be a "playful curmudgeon" but rather too often being a grumpy old man. I also thought that someone who has so much respect for the English language could find other ways to voice displeasure rather than curse words and foul language. It's unfortunate that so many interesting observations about his adopted home have to be tainted in this way. It makes his apparent affection for the place expressed in the last few pages less believable, or maybe understandable.
I've greatly enjoyed many of Bill Bryson's prior works, but this one left me concerned about the drift to curmudgeonly thinking from focusing on what he doesn't like more than what is likable.Also, often politics enters many of Bill's books but never to this extent. The section on immigration Bill, sadly, embraced a straw man argument to stake out a position no one disagrees with.Being a logical person myself, seeing this descent into the illogical abyss left me wishing I had read a different book.Still, it's got 2 stars because there was a lot of interesting information. I've made 6 trips to the UK and I was often taking a new tidbit of info Bill exposed then looking up more information.My wife is determined to see the Ridley Mounds described in the books. I wonder what future generation will completely misinterpret the structure. This begs the question of how much guessing do we do looking at the many ancient structures. Was it really a super religious site, or someone's fanciful whim, or something in between.I just found it hard to enjoy the fun information combined with the straw man arguments pushing a liberal perspective yet at the same time bashing the actions of liberal government.
On the one hand he is a very funny and entertaining writer; no one can make me laugh out loud while reading the way he can. Also, he is so compelling in his praise and vivid in his descriptions; I really want to visit the places about which he writes.On the other hand, the angry old man stuff gets tiring. His liberal use of the word "idiot" evidences a real inner anger he ought to get under control. A poor government worker just doing their job by enforcing a rule isn't just wrong in Bill's eyes; he is an idiot...some lower being to be scorned for doing his job. It is an attitude the author has, and it is both tiring and troubling.I finally figured it out, though. I love travel because of the people on the way that I meet. Bill loves travel despite the people on the way that he meets.

Here's the plot (Americans, watch out for spoilers. Canadians, don't worry. You learned all of this in grade school.):In 1885, Ottawa confronted a serious uprising by Metis (“half-breeds†in French, not polite) and other Catholic, French-speaking settlers in what’s now southern Manitoba, on the Red River (the boundary between Minnesota and North Dakota, further south). At the time there were no provinces west of Ontario, but Ottawa had big plans and - according to Chester Brown's interpretation - sparked a crooked land rush to attract English-speaking settlers out west to screw the Metis out of their excellent farmland.The Metis rebelled under the banner of a crazy visionary named Louis Riel, who received direct instructions from God.This was a long way from Ottawa, and “the English†had no way of projecting their power that far west to crush the rebellion and keep the Metis from seceding and forming a little Ukraine for themselves in the middle of the Wheat Belt. So the money guys in the East realized that this was their chance to get federal backing for what would become the Canadian Pacific Railroad. They persuaded Ottawa that if the tracks could be laid quickly, they could get redcoats out there in force. And lo, it happened.The brilliant Chester Brown renders this conflict with restraint. Too much restraint. Is it a slam to mention that Brown is Canadian? Everything happens in six panels to a page. It is minimalist and beautiful, but we sometimes wish he'd blow out a battle scene or another highly emotional moment to at least a half page. It seems as though he's striving for a journalistic sort of objectivity in the scenic depiction, while the larger narrative is completely tilted towards the Metis and against the federals.But that is a quibble. Like a fine sonneteer, Brown embraces the restrictions and still succeeds. There is something eerie and convincing about a long-distance gun battle in the snowy woods where the sounds aren't BANG! and KAPOW! but PK .. PK .. PK.
Chester Brown's Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography is an interesting historical novel about Louise Riel, a 19th Century Canadian politician who helped found the province of Manitoba, advocated for the rights of the Metis (an aboriginal group descended from First Nation peoples and Europeans), and who led armed revolts against the Canadian government. I confess to being one of those U.S. citizens who does not know much about the history of Canada and so most of the material in this historical novel was both new and interesting to me.Brown's graphic style is both sparse and visually interesting and he uses it to tell a good story in this book. Riel was apparently mentally ill for at least part of his life which may account for the sometimes inexplicable decisions he makes in the course of this narrative. Brown is a dispassionate narrator throughout the book and, for the most part, there are no clear villains or heroes. There are some amusing sections as well in this generally tragic tale.
This is Chester Brown's magnum opus.He meticulously researched the history of Manitoba and Canada in order to write the story of Louis Reil, who was either a patriot or rebel villain, depending upon your point of view.The art work is decent & sparse (Chester's style), but the story is just fantastic.I wish for two things here:(1) that more writers produced histories in comic form -- it's a fantastic way to tell a story and I think that it is a wonderful education tool(2) that Chester Brown would get more recognition.
Most of the previous reviews have touched upon how well this book has covered its subject matter and there is no disagreement here.A few mentioned the artwork but not enough. Brown's work is astounding. In the introduction to Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography, Brown mentions the influence of Herge's Tintin and Harold Grey's Little Orphan Annie on his work and his wondrous black and white, six panel pages are truly an homage those great comics he cites.For both story and artwork, five stars are too little for Brown's beautiful comic-strip biography. This book belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in either history or graphic novels/comic strips.
Granted, I am not absolutely fascinated with this aspect of Canadian history, but this book was a pretty interesting insight into the mind of a disturbed, but well-meaning and determined individual. The art was very Sunday-news-comic style, but slightly darker, which was appropriate for creating the atmosphere of the saga.
Great synopses of an aspect of Canadian history I was completely unaware of, despite having lived there for a time.

“System Thinking for Social Change†is a semi-useful book.David Stroh applies system thinking paradigm on how to address pressing social issues. The book gives some concrete guidelines on how to unfold a complex solution to resolve social problems like mass incarceration, homelessness, and universal pre-school program. The narrative supposedly walks a reader through “systems thinking†framework. Yet, the author lacks strong writing skills, and he can’t keep a reader interested throughout the book. Stroh has a couple of useful examples, which kind of explore system thinking. At the same time, this exploration misses the essence of those projects. To make it perfect, he needs to give more instances with essential info. Diagrams (figures) are difficult to understand. He doesn’t reveal how to create it. He says that main stakeholders, sometimes given key variables, should build these cause and effect diagrams. That sounds as an effective technique in the brainstorming process. How to perfect those diagrams at the late stages? How will the validity of cause and effect diagrams be checked? What if a diagram is biased?The book is semi-useful, so you can find beneficial info on system thinking, but not comprehensive. This book will be helpful for social advocates and community organizers.
I enjoy nearly all systems books so this too was a pleasant read. It has many processes and lists of questions to help newbies to get started on the path to cooperative problem solving.Now what I didn't like. When compared to Peter Senge or Donella Meadows books it is apparent that there are not insights into emergent properties nor an appreciation for exponential functions. Perhaps being stripped of math also strips it of tangible understanding of system dynamics.Also the book felt very much like more rationalism will give us more results. The book seemed to focus on business results. There was a focus on getting people to see how they harm the system instead of help it. I reject all this as lower level thinking that got us into this mess in the first place. It seemed like it was just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.Read anything by Peter Senge, Margaret Wheatley, Donella Meadows, Clare W Graves, or Don Beck for post-rational solutions to our current problems. I fear these great people are misunderstood because their visions are not accessible by rational minds.
David Peter Stroh’s brilliant new book, Systems Thinking for Social Change, could not appear at a more important time for those working collaboratively for racial equity and social and economic justice in coalitions and partnerships. From my perspective, as a nationally recognized consultant in community and systems change collaboration, David has provided much needed clarity about, and very understandable explanations of how to effectively apply, systems thinking in collaborative social change efforts. Even with the best intentions, necessary multi-collaboration can quickly become overly complicated and very difficult to focus on the most prudent and effective methods for mission and goal achievement. To a large degree, this is because many of those working in partnerships do not think systemically about the complex nature of problems needing attention. As David points out, systems change requires asking questions revealing both the likelihood of achieving the intended consequences of collective actions while not being overwhelmed or diverted by consequence that were not intended. He explains why social change also requires systems thinking in order to design and implement the best mutually reinforcing and mutually accountable strategic actions that can bring effective demonstrations of problem solving to scale. Importantly, David grounds his approaches to systems thinking in the power inequities, institutional racism and other repressive manifestations of our existing political and cultural realities that must be transformed. David Peter Stroh also clearly stands in solidarity with all those engaging in Tikkun Olam, Hebrew for repairing the world, to bring forth a common good for all people worthy of our best hopes and dreams for a decent, caring and sustainable global community.
Systems Thinking for Social Change fills a critical gap for those of us working to make lasting change in messy, "wicked" problems. Stroh provides a deeply experience-based and theoretically well-grounded set of tools for revealing underlying patterns and key leverage points in seemingly unordered, complex situations. But Stroh goes beyond sharing learnable, powerful tools in an accessible way, to compassionately point out the change in world-view and ways of being needed to intervene competently in complicated, multi-stakeholder spaces. Learning to use systems thinking at the high level Stroh does takes time and practice; but his generous sharing of his experience and how to go about it makes it feel achievable for the rest of us. I'm grateful to have this thinking and resource available to me and the rest of our field.
This was incredibly slow and mind-numbing... If you have any background or existing insight into making systems changes, I would completely skip this. Very few objective recommendations, lots of stories.

I collect McCoy pottery planters and vases and was glad to see some of my faves in this book and other pieces that I've seen and didn't realize until reading this book, that they were McCoy also. great reference book to have.

This book contains many photos and names or pieces and lines to help a novice collector recognize McCoy.I love McCoy collecting - but I suspect the information found in Mr. Snyder's book reflects knowledge of an author and not a seasoned McCoy collector. The book contained little new information and several errors including the unique spelling of Mr. SIDNEY Cope's name which should read SYDNEY.A good collector's reference needs more than pictures and guesses at pricing and needs to do more than reiterate (whether accurately or inaccurately) the history of the items. It needs a depth of current knowledge found only by being an active collector who networks with others; subscribes to newsletters; attends reunions and auctions and above all, is familiar with the topic of the book!This book values a stoneware leaves and berries plate at when last summer one sold for. I suspect that had there been input from other geographical locations beyond PA and Ohio, some of the pricing and information might have been more accurate.Disappointing to say the least - but there are other very informative McCoy books to fill the holes left by this one.
Generally inferior to the real collector books on McCoy--the Nissen Hanson volumes, Sanford volumes, Huxford and the original Coates books. Pictures not as detailed, poor organization, incomplete reference for this prolific pottery.

This was such a powerful and emotional book. It’s my favorite in the series so far.Sunny lost his mother at birth and he’s always considered himself in debt to her. He runs for her honor and he’s great at it, except it’s not what his heart wants.Sunny has a difficult relationship with his father and the distance between them is one of the main subjects of the diary entries that make up this book.Sunny speaks to “Diary†as if it’s a person...sometimes his mother and sometimes his father and sometime neither...but it’s so touching and transformational.Wonderful.
I'm so confused. I don't know what went wrong here. I'm actually a little annoyed with this book. I feel like the quality has decreased from one book to the next. Ghost was such a great book, but I can't say the same about the rest of the series.This one was the worst so far. It's such a shame because I was really looking forward to Sunny's story. He was always one of my favorite characters, and I had such high hopes.It was written in "Dear Diary" style, and unfortunately, I found Sunny's narrative voice to be very annoying. And all those sounds "boom, tish, rrrah, bla", I just couldn't take it.The story would have been so much more touching and emotionally charged had it been written in verse form or regular narrative, but all these diary entries were...kind of lame.There were a few gems in there, and that doesn't surprise me because I know what Jason Reynolds is capable of. I give it a 2 stars, because I'm biased and I love Reynolds. But in truth, I'm not sure it deserves more than a star.
Again! He did it again! Left us wanting more! I love his characters and the emotional integrity and plot development! I want to read the next one as soon as possible! The voices come to life. The conflicts are universal. My son and I read the book out loud to each other. It’s great bonding time! We laughed out loud as well as many more emotions.
Jason Reynolds has done it again! Sunny’s story is beautifully written in a diary that I want to read over and over again.
got this for my son. he loves reading Jason Reynolds' books. That says a lot about Reynolds' writings. It's almost impossible to get my son to read. but he goes out of the way to get me to buy him Jason's books and he reads them right right away. Thanks for being able to appeal to boys like my son.
This was a #bookaday for me! What a wonderful third installment. It was a terrific story about loss, grief, forgiveness and moving on. Another fantastic middle grade novel from the incredible Jason Reynolds. So fortunate to have his books in the world. Keep writing, man!
I purchased Sunny, Lu, and Ghost for my 13 year old granddaughter, and her parents purchased Patina. She thoroughly enjoyed all.

This is a great supplemental review book for Human Embryology and Developmental Biology. It's a great book to have right next to your Embryology and Developmental Biology class notes. The illustrations and explanations are detailed and make this a fabulous addition to a first-year medical student's library. It a super supplement and can make the more dense textbooks of Human Embryology understandable. This book can also stand on its own as a refresher for those folks out of medical school and those in medical school that just need more understanding of the concepts. This book is priced well and can help the struggling student. I highly recommend it.
As a craniofacial surgeon with a specialty in the developmental biology of the head and neck there is no better place to start than Carlson. I have followed this text over the years from its 2nd edition and it just gets better. Lucid explanations with up to date references. This is the perfect companion to Scott Gilbert's Developmental Biology. They should be read in sequence.
