From the Inside Flap
For years we've been told that a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet is the way to lose weight and stay trim. But anyone who has diligently followed that regimen knows that it doesn't work. Rick Gallop, former president of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, tried it, along with countless other diets, and ended up back where he started: twenty pounds overweight. Frustrated, he set out to find a diet that was healthy and that would actually work. When he came across the Glycemic Index, or G.I., he realized he'd found the magic bullet. Developed by Dr. David Jenkins, a professor of nutrition at the University of Toronto, the G.I. measures the speed at which your body breaks down food and converts it to glucose, which is used for energy or stored as fat. When losing weight, it is critical to avoid foods that have a high G.I., because they are digested too quickly by your body. With Rick Gallop's "G.I. Diet you won't have to calculate the glycemic ratings and calories because he has done that for you, by listing foods in one of three categories: foods to avoid, foods to eat occasionally, and foods that you can eat as much of as you want. With recipes, snack ideas, a pull-out shopping list, tips on dining out and strategies for maintaining your new weight, you'll never have to pick up another diet book! ""I can't believe I'm actually losing weight . . . without even trying! I'm not even exercising! I do cheat a bit (I love popcorn). Thank you for your book -- I'm finally getting the help all my doctors couldn't advise!" -- Tracy ""I am thrilled about the 50-pound weight loss (in just less than 4 months) and significant reduction in my blood sugar. Your book has given merenewed hope in getting my weight off, as I have 50 more to go. It is so confidence building to know that it is not my fault for my obesity these past many years, and I only wish I had known this information years ago." -- Irene ""Lost 40+ pounds in a matter of 2+ months (from 210 lbs to 170 lbs). No more headaches!! Blood pressure back down from 180/120 to normal reading. My doctor can't believe the change. Best I've felt in years. Not hungry between meals with your meal plans. Yes, I can indulge once in a while (without putting back any weight)." -- Joe "From the Trade Paperback edition.

This is the second one I purchased. I lost my first copy. I have PCOS, I am insulin resistant. The glycemic index helps to keep PCOS symptoms in check. There are a few recipes In here I do use, however, I really like the lists that very bluntly show you which items are low glycemic and which are not. I carry the lists around with me, because I have hard time remembering lots of stuff. It is not a thick book, full of a lot of fluff, it hits the nuts and bolts of the glycemic index, what it does to your body, how to use it. It is a simple book to read and follow, and I keep it on hand as a reference.
I only have great things to say about this book. Coming from a background of yo-yo dieting trying everything from Weightwatchers to Atkins I was tired. Tired of trying, but then I stumbled upon this book. This is NOT a diet this is a lifestyle of great health. This easy to follow plan does not take you to far to the right or left but it keeps you centered in the middle to be as healthy as possible and lose weight too. This plan is amazing from day one I could not put the book down, I read it all in one day and started the plan immediately. I have gotten healthy and lost 40pounds so far from following this lifestyle. I would also like to mention that I am not diabetic and this worked for me. The plan just makes since. No more yo-yo dieting the plan works for everyday life and for every situation. The book is well laid out. I brought several books to give them to friends and family. I will never diet again but I will stick to this lifestyle for life!!
This book is so helpful. My elderly father was diagnosed with Diabetes this spring and basically had to learn a whole new lifestyle. In the midst of it all, he and my mother just quit eating. They said they just didn't know what they could eat. I searched for something that was simple for them to understand the foods that were good for them. This book breaks foods down into green lighted, yellow lighted or red lighted. They could understand that and were able to use this book to get on track. I would recommend this book for anyone, not just diabetics for healthy eating.
This program is very much like the more popular and better known "South Beach Diet", but it doesn't have the dreaded Phase I that The South Beach Plan has where you have to drastically cut back carbs. The program is actually easy to follow and when followed to the letter, it will work. I had read in other places that critics did not like that professional chefs did not design the recipes in this book, but, I actually thought the recipes were better in this book for that very reason. Not to knock the "professionals", but they like to use ingredients that get great results, but, often are not available to the everyday person at their local grocery store. The recipes in this book do not have that problem, for the most part, and I tried a few of them.
I'm a huge fan of this book and often recommend it to others, as it's easy for follow and you won't be hungry. I bought it to help control my blood sugar and not weight loss, but it helped with both. The pounds rolled off and my blood sugar returned to normal. I don't agree with everything Gallop says, so tailor it to your own needs. I still eat nuts and butter and have my morning cuppa Joe, so do what is right for you. If you don't need to lose weight, keep an eye on the scale so you don't lose too much weight. Also, do eat high fiber veggies and fruit, but go easy on high fiber bread unless it's gluten free, or you could end up with gluten intolerance like I did. Moderation in all things!
This diet has really worked for me and I want to add some of my observations. There are some pretty comprehensive reviews on here already so I will not summarize anything from the book to minimize repetition.Stats on me: I started in May of 05 and lost 5 pounds a week for the first four weeks. I only lost so much because I was well over 200lb (as a 5'5'' female). After that it was more gradual with plateaus and minor ups and downs. I have gone periods were I was only following it 50% faithfully and did not gain the weight back. I am moderately active: gym two to three times a week (usually for an hour water aerobics class) and I do not have a car so I walk everywhere.Diet Pro's:- Its Healthy. No doctor would be concerned if his/her patient ate veggies and balanced whole grains and lean proteins. Worst-case scenario: you try it and don't loose weight, but you will not have hurt your metabolism or raised your cholesterol in doing so.- Its Not a Gimmick. This is not based on "eat all the bacon and cheese you want" or some other counter-intuitive nonsense. Its principals are in line with what is known and widely accepted in medical science.- Cuts Cravings and is designed to keep your belly full. With three meals and three snacks a day of slowly digested food I am not hungry. Additionally, keeping my blood sugar stable stopped the need to binge eat.- Not dogmatic. Ever read a diet book where you feel like the author is practically trying to convert you to a religion? Gallop certainly believes in this diet and he makes no mention that it might not work for every person (see con below), however he spends most of his time laying out simple science and practical guidelines. He even says your goal should be to follow it 90% of the time. If you have a cookie, big deal, the worst thing that can happen is it will take slightly longer to lose some weight.Diet Con's:- Unfortunately, as with all diets, this will work great for some people and not for others. Its more likely to work for you if you:o Tend to carry your fat in the belly. i.e. "apple," "barrel," or "cone" shaped for women, or a guy with a "beer belly"o Have major cravings for carbs - perhaps even binge eat on things like pastries, candy, pasta and bread.o Have been diagnosed with insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, or even type II diabetes-The recipes can be bland - more from the author not being a chef, not the principals of the diet, so if you are a practiced cook you can make alterations for flavor and texture that stay true to the diet. The book encourages you to go the author's website where there are recipes submitted by readers available for free and they are quite good.-You will have to cook. I have been on this diet for nearly two years and like to cook, so its been great for me.***UPDATE June 2008***Make that 90+ pounds lost in three years. I still cook most of my food from the recipes found in Gallop's books. They have passed the picky boyfriend test, potluck test and the I can stick to this for the rest of my life test. Some points:-During this time I have gone months and months with no weight loss but I was only *mostly* following the diet. I think I needed these breaks.-I work out intensely for 60 minutes 4 days a week now.

Hetty’s Secret War is the third book in the Women at War series. I was at a slight disadvantage since I had not read the first two books. It can be read as a stand alone since the author does give background on the characters as the story progresses. The title is Hetty’s War but the book centers around three women. Hetty, Georgie and Beth are all facing an uncertain future as the Second World War looms over their lives. The year is 1939 and the country is in turmoil.Hetty lives in Paris but regretfully knows she must make her way back to England before the inevitable invasion of her beloved adopted home. Along the way she unintentionally becomes involved in the French Resistance and with a man that takes her heart.Georgie begins the year as a young widow having married a man who never really had her heart. When she reconnects with the man that she has always loved life is suddenly exciting. But a secret war mission could change everything.Beth only wants to find a way to help the war effort and finally start living her own life. She didn’t plan on falling in love, getting married and being left behind when her husband is sent on a mission. And to make the situation even harder she discovers she is pregnant. After several chapter I started to get involved in this story. The story seemed to move slowly and the characters came across as a little flat. After watching a show on PBS I realized my problem. I love reading stories about Americans home life during World War Two. Life in England was definitely different. Once I put the story into perspective, readjusted my understanding of daily life in England during the war I enjoyed the story quite a bit. I think Beth was my favorite character. She took a job, had a romantic, whirlwind romance and was left pregnant when her husband marched off to War.Hetty’s War gave me a different perspective about the effects of war on day to day life in England. I would recommend reading the first two books in the series. I think it would help the flow of the story and make the third book more enjoyable.I voluntarily received this book through Netgalley.
Hetty’s Secret War can be read as a standalone, but you will find it confusing in the beginning. I suggest you read Jessie’s Promise and The Runaway Wife before embarking on Hetty’s Secret War. You will have a better understanding of the characters and their situations. I have always found World War II a fascinating time period (I would not have wanted to experience it though). Women were encouraged to work outside the home and take on tasks that were previously done by men. It was a difficult time, but people rallied together for the war effort. This is what we see in Hetty’s Secret War. I found the story nicely written with a variety of characters in different situations. There is foul language and intimate scenes included in the book (fair warning). While the book focused on Hetty, Beth and Georgie, we also catch up with Annabel. I like how the separate characters stories intertwined to create one charming book. They face losses and experience heartache, but there is joy as well. Hetty experiences danger and life threatening situations. Despite the hardships, they continued to have hope and faith as well as the comfort of family and friends. The ending had me smiling. Hetty’s Secret War is an emotional novel that will touch your heart.*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book. I am not required to write a review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.
Oh sigh. Three women, all dealing with the pain of losing a loved one to WWII. Georgie, Hetty, and Beth are very different but each of them is coping with tragedy. Georgie's husband has died but she's reunited with her earlier love- and then he heads overseas. Beth's pregnant and her husband, a pilot, has gone missing. Hetty - oh Hetty- she went to France as a young woman and now that she's stuck there she's working with the Resistance. Clarke weaves together these three women in a way that might not surprise you but will keep you reading. This notes that it's the third in a series but read it as a standalone as it's meant to be linked but not successive of the others. Thanks to net galley for the ARC. Fans of this genre will enjoy it.
Intense emotional journey with four woman during World War 2 located in Britain and France. Lots of twists and turns, love and loss. Hard to say enjoyable but it was a very interesting read. I look forward to reading more from this author.I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Disclosure: I was provided an electronic copy of this book for a blog tour.I’ll start this review with what I would normally say at the end. Upon finishing Mr. Hogwood’s book, I immediately ordered a hard copy version. I could have easily printed the PDF provided, but 1.) I felt that the time, effort and expertise put into creating this handbook WELL merited my money. 2.) I want to have a compact, easy-to-carry version available for reference.First, don’t let the page count discourage you. When I received my copy, I groaned. 350 pages on Survival Groups? Can’t this fit into 30? Trust me when I say that there’s not a wasted word in the handbook, and that’s coming from a writer known to waste a word or two—here and there. With that said, you can’t expect to read this in one sitting. It’s 1.) Too important of a topic. 2.) Covers every aspect of survival group dynamics you can imagine. This book needs to be read in stages and sections, giving you time to reflect on the subjects presentedSurvival group basics and dynamics are an often-overlooked topic in the readiness discussion. Naturally, we gravitate toward gathering gear and preparing our environment for disaster. It’s more immediate and you can easily measure your progress. But if you think about it, you’ll always be in a group, whether it’s with family, friends or neighbors. The principles in this book apply to all of these groups, tailored for each of them…and Mr. Hogwood goes far beyond that to prepare you for larger, more purposeful survival groups. Here are some of the concepts addressed…I stress the word SOME. There’s a wealth of information and reinforced ideas.-Being part of a group requires you to ask yourself-What are you willing to give up or trade for the safety and security of a group? This forms the core of the book. If the answer is NOTHING, you don’t belong in a group…period. Mr. Hogwood presents this question early, setting the tone for the rest of the book.-Group leadership. Which types are appropriate for a group of your size and how do you choose?-Vetting members, inducting new members and interacting with other survival groups. Balancing the skills a member brings to the group with the supplies.-Where do you locate your group?-Different types of groups and the internal dynamics of each.-Security. No readiness book would be complete without a talk about security, and Hogwood does a fantastic job highlighting the importance of proper security.-Roles within the group. This section will help even the smallest group, like your immediate family, plan and prepare for an extended disaster. Hogwood lists dozens of roles and their responsibilities. All of these are important and made me think about different aspects of survival within a group. The Survival Handbook is an easy to read, detailed guide to forming, establishing and maintaining a survival group or Mutual Assistance Group (MAG). While the overall emphasis is on a major, society-disrupting event, Hogwood doesn’t overlook less formal versions of the survival group. The concepts found in the handbook can be applied to regional or local disasters (major storm, hurricane, etc.), just as easily as TEOTWAWKI. Highly recommended, even if you have no intention of starting a survival group. Just having this on your shelf when a crisis strikes could be the head start you need to survive and thrive. Once you read the book, I suspect you won’t wait to put some of the principles to work.
This is a serious and lengthy book for those who ate serious about putting together a sustainable survival group capable of weathering the worst of disasters. We would all like to think that we know enough; that "common sense" will see us, and those we love, through any situation. But if common sense was all that common - we would never be in a TEOTWAWKI situation to begin with. This book covers those bases that might be missing, or not so common.
If you have had a few false starts with starting a survival group, MAG group, prepper group, or even a patriot group....this book might be a GREAT resource for you!!! I was quickly able to identify weakness areas that worked against my success. This book will help you assess, quantify, and manage potential recruits in the most effective manner. Please don't wait until SHTF to find out the weaknesses of your group when a simple guide like this book can help you develop the most effective team now when the lights are on & water is running out of the faucets.
A lot of what is presented in this book can be had by reading any number of other books on each individual topic covered but that would take a LOT of time. However, NOT reading each topic book and relying strictly on one book to be the end all can be a BAD idea. Remember the old saying: "A little knowledge can be dangerous?"I'm not saying this book is "dangerous" however I would caution the reader to NOT rely on strictly ONE book for ALL their information. That said, this book can be considered a pretty good "starter" book which should be digested and as a launching pad for more in-depth reading.
After reading this book cover to cover it helped me understand how to organize groups of people. This book is based on a short term/long term survival group, but you can use this for leading groups of people at the work place or large families. It open my eyes and mind to a whole new world.Thank you!
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIBRARY - GET IT! I'm not an "official" prepper or survivalist. I just want to be somewhat prepared for the next catastrophe that hits my little part of the world. This is the best book that ties everything together. EVERYONE in your group needs to read this so everyone is "on the same page" WTSHTF". So everyone understands where they fit in the group.
Good book to have in every house. Boring to read, but life saving and life changing, period!
This is a must read for anyone or group interested in starting or becoming a productive member of a mutual assistance group. This book will step you through all of the pitfalls and the solutions of starting a group.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1997, famed Italian author and essayist Celati accompanied his friend, filmmaker Jean Talon, on a journey to West Africa that took them from Mali to Senegal and Mauritania. The original purpose of their journey, to do research for a documentary on the methods of Dogon healers, soon became of ancillary importance. As Celati's diary-turned-book relates, the two white Europeans became lost and spent much of their trip wandering about unmoored. But more than a comedy of errors, Celati's book recounts the travails of a writer whose encounter with the unknown, the "other," clarifies his understanding of himself and allows him to regain a "state of self-forgetfulness" from which, Celati believes, the best writing emanates. Celati is no stranger to literary adventure. In Italy, he is best known as an experimental writer, unafraid to venture into uncharted territory. But while the author is certainly experimenting, this book is still a record of actual events, places and people; it provides an unusual portrait of West African countries. Instead of following a linear plot, the narrative bounces on the melodies of Celati's keen insights. (Most amusing are his reflections on tourists, whom he portrays as a bona fide ethnic group, thoroughly a part of Africa's cultural and economic landscape.) Out of his encounter with the "other" is born Celati's concept of "nothing"Athe unconscious goal toward which his ostensibly reckless plot is moving. But only upon his return to orderly Paris does he fully elucidate its meaning. Celati's writing exposes the age-old power of travel to induce shedding the self and one's preconceptions. (Nov.) From Booklist
Acclaimed Italian novelist and essayist Celati transforms a series of journal entries recorded while traveling in West Africa into a tantalizing travelogue of cultural color and texture. As Celati and his friend, filmmaker Jean Talon, journey through Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania, their carefully laid plans are continually disrupted by the chaos and uncertainty that seem to characterize daily life in many Third World nations. The author, actively deciding to transcend the spirit of smug superiority that grips most European and American tourists visiting Africa, opts to embrace and enjoy the "diversity of sights, experiences, and people" he encounters. This delightful sojourn into the exotic and the unexpected will appeal to both seasoned and armchair travelers. Margaret FlanaganCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I ordered two copies for gifts and one for myself to share. For the travler on the road or simply in life, that understands that often things are beyond our control but that does not have to be a bad thing. A mini vacation for an older travler on a Montana winter night, making longing for the next adventure somehow more appealing and a plesant way to drift off for the evening, quiet and safe.
In 1997, Gianni Celati, well-known Italian literary figure since the nineteen sixties and author of fiction, essays and translations, embarked on a journey into West Africa, accompanied by his friend, the film maker Jean Talon, with the intention to research the work of the traditional Dogon healers, based in the Malian "Centre for Traditional Medicine" in Bandiagara. Traveling unaccompanied into a world they did not know much about, not able to communicate except in the lingua franca of the educated, French, they negotiated their way through the country with local people for transport, guides and accommodation. It is as Celati confesses "a comedy of errors, delays, misinformation, and wandering about, as contacts are unfindable, means of transportation are unreliable, and complications arise at every turn". Celati's observations and musings have been published as "Adventures in Africa", based on a series of notebooks (nine altogether) that he kept like a travelogue during the trip that took them beyond Mali also to Senegal and across the border to Mauretania. It took me quite a while to get into the spirit of Celati's writing: jottings also in terms of unfinished sentences and thoughts... much is left to our own knowledge or imagination. His description of daily details of their first days of wandering through Bamako, Mali's capital, and traveling to other cities en route to Bandiagara, the centre of the Dogon region, can be anything from tedious to repetitive to slightly funny and ironical. Only when they finally reach their intended destination do the short information snippets unfurl into a more comprehensive account of their experiences and encounters. Even then, Celati is more concerned with his "stinginess" and his frustrations with the people around him than much else. Still, amidst all these ramblings we can detect gems of observational clarity, astute depiction of individuals and their demeanour in their Dogon context. While the original objective of the trip, to prepare for a documentary on the Dogon healer, does appear to become questionable, the visit itself is extended beyond Mali's borders. Eventually Celati relaxes into the local rhythms and attitudes that make him feel closer to the locals than to the other tourists they encounter... and he has wonderful comments about those as well as the would-be experts expats and anthropologists. Celati gives a detailed caricature of the "tourist", somebody innocently bumbling along in a foreign environment where he perceives everybody as a kind of trader, "starting with less than ten years old". He also gives himself the aura of the "writer on vacation", writing in more or less hospitable surroundings, losing himself in the colours and atmosphere of the locale, losing his sense of time...While I found "Adventures in Africa" overall, despite its weaknesses spelled out above, a worthwhile read, I cannot really recommend it highly to readers who are not already familiar with this region of Africa, unless they are willing to undertake much background research themselves first. Other than the interesting introduction by Rebecca West into Celati's writing history and some context for the book, the reader is left very much to his own devices to follow the itinerary, place the towns and villages, visualize the people and landscapes. There are no maps, no explanation of local terms, no background information to historical and socio-political context, no images of what the book is describing. [Friederike Knabe]
Maybe there are two ways of writing about travel. First, you write about startling things or things that other people normally might not notice. Second, you present a somewhat ordinary world but you do so in high-flown prose that---because of the quality of the writing---carries the reader along no matter what. This journalistic travel book seems one that a publisher might have picked up ONLY because the writer is well known. It is neither well written nor particularly acute in what it sees and reports. Too often there is a grim habit of stereotype, and always there is a languid sense of a prose style that suggests little more than some jottings in a loose-leaf along the way. A Graham Greene brings heart, keen perception, and inspiration to his "Journey without Maps" into Africa, and may other writers encounter people who remain in your mind. Celati just putters along.
Very engaging book about all that is ordinary yet extraordinary in what to many readers may initially seem exotic places.
After reading Adventures in Africa, we think that this book was not the best book ever. We thought that it was rather dull throughout almost the whole book. One reason that we might have thought that it was dull is because, the book is written like a journal. We haven't ever read a book written like a journal before, and I don't like that style of writing. That could have had an impact on us not liking the book, or just simply because we didn't like the way it was written. Also, the story line was not too interesting. Each journal that he would write each day would just tell about what he did that day. It is like reading a book about a person that sits at home all day. The main character was a tourist in Africa, and would meet new people and travel to different places. Most of the day's he would do the same thing. We found this book to be very repetitive, and we find that pretty boring about books. He would always tell about how he would go to this river and watch all the people bathe. He would do that everyday for a long period of time, and it just got old. After that he would go to a cliff and climb it everyday. Most days though, he would take a tour bus somewhere. While he was in Africa he made many friends, sometimes it was hard to keep them straight. His friend Jean, was his best friend, they went almost everywhere together. This book isn't the best book, and we wouldn't recommend it unless you like to read other peoples' journals. We just didn't find it interesting at all. It didn't grab my attention or make me actually want to read the book. The only reason why we read it was because we had to for a grade.
