After having read and enjoyed The Nightingale and seeing this book’s star rating on Amazon, I thought it would be as good or at least comparable to The Nightingale, but unfortunately that is not the case. It almost seems as though The Great Alone was written by a different author. The plot is formulaic and full of holes, the characters flat and kitschy, and many of the details highly unlikely. The book is a clumsy and sophomoric attempt at portraying complicated and compelling subjects matter.
SO depressing. Per the usual, Kristin Hannah has created layered, fleshy characters and an engrossing story, but you really need to be in a good place emotionally to read this one. While many of her books are bittersweet and run the gamut of life’s emotions, this one is pretty bleak cover to cover. If all is stable and calm in your world and you read it from a place of peace and emotional homeostasis, or you need a catalyst for a bawl fest, go for it! It’s certainly an engrossing read and very well written. But if you have a lot on your plate, or more than a bit of emotional stress in your life at the moment, steer clear. Perhaps the fact that it has had such a strong effect on my state of mind is a testament to Ms. Hannah’s storytelling abilities, but I’d unread this, at least for the moment, if I could. I’m so exhausted and bummed out from reading this, I’m having a hard time getting out of my pjs this weekend! Additionally, there are a couple of areas where the plot line is a real stretch, but I think it’s so well-written overall that those things can be overlooked. Still a very good book, but good grief!
This can best be described as ChickLit meets Adventure with a hearty dose of Melodrama. It is a good story—the kind that keeps you turning pages to find out what happens. And if you enjoy books with riveting plots, this one is for you. But that's about all it has. The characters—and some are quite colorful—are far too one-dimensional. The bad guys are really bad. And the good guys are really good. And there is not much in between.Written by Kristin Hannah, this is the story of 13-year-old Leni who moves in 1974 (in an old VW bus of all things) to the uncivilized wilds of Alaska with her parents, Cora and Ernt. Cora is a loving mother, who thinks of Leni as her best friend. Ernt is a former Vietnam POW, who has nightmares and rages of anger that he takes out on his wife with his fists. This is the classic story of danger, and even in the middle of winter in godforsaken Alaska the real danger can be inside the cabin—not out.While most of the plot is predictable, there are a few unexpected twists and turns that save the book from being totally banal. Still, this is hardly great literature.
Rarely in my 50 years of reading have i come across a story that enfolds me into its pages as did "The Great Alone". The character of Leni takes us on a journey where we don't always want to follow. Her story is raw and honest, told through the innocence of a girl coming of age in the tumultuous 60's. Her description of Alaska is like watching a documentary about the state where we are swept from the water up to the glaciers and see a great panoramic of the wild and pristine state. Alaska herself comes alive as a character here, just as detailed and meaningful as any other. I grew to love the inhabitants of Kenaq as if I had lived there myself. The story flows in an often unpredictable way and leaves the reader wanting more. I am so glad I read this book and I can't wait to recommend it to others.
This was a novel of spousal and family abuse. The stroyline was at times laughably implausible. Too often I found myself reading and thinking “oh come on!†Not a happy tale. Not particularly an adventure. If you want to read about Alaska, read James Mitchner. Or Jack London.
I couldn't read more than 3 chapters. Shallow, too much tell not show, none of the characters were remotely interesting. It seemed to be a list of what the 70's looked like in that it mentions all kinds of things but there is no depth or showing of them. I was deeply disappointed and sorry I wasted money on this.
I’ve read many of Kristin Hannah’s books so was anxious for this one. It was not my favorite but it was good. I learned a lot about Alaska however the first half of the book I found repetitive about Alaska. Very descriptive which I like, but maybe 50pages or so too much description. The second half of the book was fantastic. A lot happened in this story -characters were well defined, the plot was twisting, sad and happy and also horrifying at times. There was a happy ending which made it worth the read and thinking back on it, I really did enjoy it. I do recommend -the author is a great writer. CH
Loved it the descriptions of Alaska, but hated the treatment of the "PTSD." This wasn't just Vietnam-vet run-of-the-mill PTSD. This man must have had problems before he ever went to Vietnam. His "PTSD" was an excuse for spousal abuse, jealousy paranoid delusions of a survivalist nature . I was also disappointed in the relationship between the mother and daughter. The mother's mothering was also poor. She failed to protect her daughter from witnessing the spousal abuse (as well as the couple's sexual relations). The mother didn't really love her husband; she was addicted to him. The "two peas in a pod" line used multiple times in the book was a way of holding her daughter close, just at a time when she should have been individuating. However, I have to say, I was in tears at the end of the book. So, VERY flawed psychology in the book, not at all up to the bar that The Nightingale had set for her, but a tearful ending.

Grade 3-5-While not much is really known about Tutankhamen, his persona continues to intrigue young and old alike. Here is a book geared toward younger children about this fascinating figure. Imparting facts about Egyptian history, Sabuda creates a background world and then places the boy who would be king in it. Readers learn of customs such as the fact that only female members were included in ancient family portraits and that women in mourning threw dust in their hair when they wept. They read of temples built and then destroyed and of gods who became angry, abandoning their people. The uniqueness of this book, however, is in its extraordinary illustrations. Bold black framework cut from a single sheet of paper adheres to handmade Egyptian papyrus that has been brightly painted in dazzling early Egyptian designs. Cats, long worshiped by the Egyptians, are found on almost every page. Notes at the end of the book give additional facts about this ancient civilization and the discovery of Tut's tombs. Perhaps the book is speculative or dated, but it is inaccurate in several areas. I will not be using it in my classroom.
I am a fan of Sabuda's. But I was surprised to find this wasn't a pop-up book. The story about the Egyptian struggle to resolve the issue of one or many gods was well built into a story about courage of one's convictions tho a footnote telling that in later centuries several religions do maintain that there is only one god. Illustrations are glorious.
No one does a "pop - up book" better than Robert Sabuda.An Egyptian fan for a long time, this book was a perfect giftfor myself. Spent literally hours with it !
I love Robert Sabuda but this boring story and equally boring pop ups are not worthy of his usual high-quality items. It appears to me that this was done to make a quick buck for the holiday seasons.
I was disappointed that this book was not a pop-up as Robert Sabuda books are usually. The book was too old for a 5 year old but would have been fine if it was a pop-up. The seller's need to make that clear that is not a pop-up.
Yes, this book was inaccurate at times. But guys, if we were to teach children king tuts actual story, it would wreak havoc on their tiny little hearts. That being said: I was highly skeptical about this book because every king tut book is super generic and just emphasizes that he was the boy king and he was a boy and young and king and YAY!!! /sigh.Well! When I read this book I fell out of my chair. What was covered in this book was Akhenaten's attempt to unify the gods at the cost of all of Egypt's lore and former deities. He was the first iconoclast (destroyer of art) and the first visionary to saw god as one deity and not many (ie the first monotheist!!). I learned this in art history class when i was in my twenties and I felt ripped off only discovering it so late in life! This book starts a discussion on the value of art and culture among much younger students (ten-year-old's in my case). And the kids LOVED this book. They discussed in great length and with much excitement Akhenaten's decision, while marveling at the brilliant illustrations in this book. This book was a conversation starter and had the kids so passionate and excited about Egypt and about their gods and culture.Your students or children WILL hear about King Tut 100 times more in their lives --but please do not blow the opportunity to show them this book which wonderfully explains what actually happened with the worship of Aten, destruction of art, and huge shift and response in culture. (You could also explain some of the historical anomalies, which i'm pretty sure are explained in the back of the book in a gigantic outro paragraph).
The book opens when Tutankhamen was a very young and sickly child. The author explains that this youngest son attended school but was unable to participate in very physical games due to his fragility. While Tut walked to his school he admired the temples, appreciated the fine art work which glorified the numerous Egyptian Gods and his spirituality grew. In the beginning of the story, his father, Amenhotep III was Pharaoh. Upon the death of his father (which is not really dealt with or discussed enough),Tut's older brother, Amenhotep IV, took over the throne. Under his rule, he banned worship of all God's except for the Sun God. Temples and artwork were destroyed and Tut was upset about this, as it seems was most of Egypt. Soon he was assassinated and Tut took over at the age of 9 or 10. The focus of the story is that Tut then restored the right of the people to worship multiple Gods and work began to restore and rebuild temples to all of the Gods. Tut seems to have been appreciated for this and his gift to the people was this act. The story ends there, with Tut still alive, young, and ruling Egypt.In the teacher's notes at the end of the book, it states that Tut was killed at the age of 19 or 20 from a severe head injury, which is speculated to be either from a hunting accident or an intentional assignation. So the story does not go as far as his death, but it is mentioned in the endnote.Since most of what people know of King Tut was of the riches found in his tomb, this book gives a different perspective of the important thing that King Tut did for his people. I think children will enjoy reading of a child King, and they will like the storytelling being in the time frame of before his rule and during his rule.The artwork is bold and bright. The swirls and bold lines remind me of stained glass windows. There is a lot to look at and the illustrations certainly held our interest.My 6 year-old son enjoyed this story as an accompaniment to learning about Ancient Egypt. The story about a young boy that became King was a refreshing change from the usual spin and perspective found in most books, which can be dry or portraying Egyptians as just mummies and the idea that Egypt is just desert and pyramids.

Incredibly disappointed with this book as I had high hopes given the intelligence of the authors. I've listened to them speak in podcasts and they offer insightful and intelligent debate. However, this book offered nothing of the sort and the authors strategy was clear: "write a book and publish it as fast as possible so we can earn a profit". The quality of the paper is extremely poor and it was clearly slapped together for as cheaply as possible. There's lots of pretty and color charts but the substance isn't there. There is no explanation of how the calculations are done or where the figures came from. For example, correlation can be hard to calculate in football given the small number of games in a season. The authors publish a correlation matrix with no explanation on how the calculations were done. So we just take your word for it then I guess? Come on.. your readers are buying this book because they are intelligent. We're buying a book about advanced sports analytics - treat us like grownups. This was a big disappointment.
This book gives you some good information that most new players usually over look. It uses graphs to prove their point which is nice. This book may not be for the serious dfs player or advanced player but for the newbie or someone who does dfs occasionally it is fine.
I have read a lot of books on Daily Fantasy Football, this book is one of the best. I am always looking for a competitive edge in DFS and this book gives that important edge that I need to be a successful DFS player. I love the informative graphics and statistics. Chapter 5 on how players correlate on a team is my favorite, it explains how to pick the best correlation for stacking. Awesome book!

Overall a really solid book. A lot of it is just providing you the data with a very brief explanation, so there's quite a bit of reasoning through it on your own, but if you can't reason through data you probably shouldn't be playing DFS in the first place.Long story short, I have recommended this to my friends who also play DFS. It will help your NFL game.
This book is one of my first forays into the deeper analytical side of DFS, but I found it to be easy to consume, well-written, and filled with useful tidbits, graphs and data. Definitely changed the way I think about things. I actually think it's the type of book that I'll read again in a couple of weeks, and expect to get even more out of it on the 2nd reading.Honestly for anyone ranging from a casual DFS player to someone taking it pretty seriously, this seems like pretty much mandatory reading and a ludicrously good value given the price point and the potential impact on your performance in DFS football games. Worth checking out!
Book is heavily data driven with thoughtful interpretations. I would certainly recommend it as an intermediate level material for daily fantasy football. Quick read that can be consumed in a few hours.

The concluding essay, which is rightly famous, is a bonus. If you don't know Simmel, this serves as an elegant introduction. You'll be thinking about it for days.

This tome is well written, well researched and, frankly, far better than some of the error-riddled Images of America series books. It provides a personal perspective on the changes that came to the region with the planning and building of Dulles Airport, along with the historical perspective from Saarinen's design to the still-growing beltway bandit city that has grown around the airport. The reviewers who critiqued the author's extensive description of the effect of Dulles on the local population can find a less personal perspective on Wikipedia. I liked the human perspective in this book very much.The book, surprisingly, missed the part played by the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, which received a temporary lease on life by delivering construction supplies and materials directly to the Dulles site. This made the W&OD right-of-way unavailable for highway construction and is why it is now a popular bike/walking/horse trail that many in the area consider a benefit to the quality of life.Now that the quaint farming villages of the author's description have been replaced with a Dulles town center - whatever that is - new arrivals to the area mistake the name of Eisenhower's Secretary of State for a place - the City of Dulles. I will bet that the republicans who renamed National Airport after Saint Ron are wishing that they had renamed Dulles instead so that his name would be plastered everywhere, but I digress.The book was published in 2005, so it misses the changes over the last 12 years such as the state of the crumbling, crowded, sloppily designed midfield United terminal, the layers of security, the virtual elimination of Saarinen's brilliant people flow design, the high-tech underground railway to a new midfield terminal that has yet to be built, and the construction of a Metro station 1000 feet from the terminal.The latter has destroyed the magnificent view of the beautiful terminal that, since 1962, anyone arriving by car could enjoy. No more. Now, the Metro crosses alongside and finally over the roadway, completely blocking that view on approach. The Metro station, which should have been integrated into the terminal as a convenient underground stop, is above ground, blocked to pedestrians from the terminal by the access highway and too far from the terminal anyway for walking with luggage. Arriving and departing passengers must wrestle their luggage onto and off a shuttle bus. Doesn't that sound like an enjoyable beginning or end to a long journey? The political denizens who did not want the correct design because it cost more up-front also ignored the much higher cost of operating and maintaining an above-ground station. Not only did they lose the view and the convenience, but they really didn't save any money either.
Arguably the title of this book should be changed to " The Families, Farms and Villages of Loudon and Fairfax County, Virginia" as affected by the construction of the Washington Dulles International Airport as that is approximately fifty percent of the book's contents. The Washington Airport Act of 1950 passed by the United States Congress was the formalization of the realization that the City of Washington, D.C. needed a new internationally capable airport not only for the needs of lt's own citizens, but, as well for international travelers coming to our nations capital as tourists and with governmental business as well as regular business interests. Air travel was on the cusp of the Jet Age, an additional recognition that new or greatly modified airports were necessary to handle this new aircraft. No other airport in the area was believed capable nor expandable to offer such aircraft service. In 1958 President Eisenhower chose the site at Chantilly, Virginia. The Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen was selected to design the initial terminal, control tower and related facilities. The initial design was forward thinking and unique when compared to other airports in existence at the time, as it was virtually an entire airport operational system. There was to be one main terminal building containing ticketing, baggage handling, check-in, and all related facilities for departing and arriving passengers. Aircraft would be parked on a remote tarmac for all servicing requirements while passengers would be transported to and from the aircraft on mobile lounges from the main terminal building. These mobile lounges had special docking facilities at the main terminal and were of such height that when arriving at the aircraft they simply parked where an integral ramp allowed the passengers to walk directly onto the aircraft at the same level. When the bigger and higher off the ground wide body aircraft arrived in the 1970's, new mobile lounges were designed that could raise and lower themselves so that they could dock at the terminal and then raise themselves to the height of the particular aircraft when arriving at it's location on the tarmac. The Chrysler Corporation won the competition to design and manufacture these mobile lounges. The main terminal was also designed with a double level access road in front for departing passengers on the upper level and and arriving passengers on the lower level, another new recognition of the need for this type of separation of passengers. A man made lake was put in place to collect rain water. Further more the remote location of this new airport required a new limited access highway of seventeen miles to connect the airport to the Capital Beltway, I-495, and then to other major highways in the region. This new highway was also designed with a center separation of the lanes to permit the future expansion of the Washington METRO to service the airport. This access is currently under construction. The new Dulles International Airport was dedicated by President Kennedy on November 17, 1962, in the presence of former President Eisenhower. After the airport's opening and for some several years following there was concern of it's being a White Elephant as it received virtually no internal air traffic, but, international traffic mainly as it's remote and distant location from the City was a perceived inconvenience. However as the years progressed just the opposite scenario developed. In 1984 the airport name was changed to Washington Dulles International Airport. The close in Washington Reagan Airport became slot constricted and international traffic developed to the point that even the advanced design of Dulles required modification. The initial remote aircraft servicing facility on the tarmac was redeveloped into a full service passenger Concourse, A and B, connected to the main terminal by an underground tram way system, Aero Train. A second such concourse, to be temporary, C and D, has been constructed connected by a shuttle system. The interior of the main terminal was reconfigured and the building itself was expanded to more than double by additions to both ends which additions were identical to the original design. Direct aircraft access was also added to the main terminal by a connected addition of a main terminal concourse. The use of the mobile lounges may be eventually terminated. A fourth runway has been constructed and a fifth runway is in the planning stages. The airport is now a hub for one major airline and a focus city for another. Also today the airport has daily scheduled B747-8 and A380 service. This reviewer transited through Dulles Airport late one July evening in 1968, after midnight, flying from JFK to Dallas on a return trip from a family visit to Norway. We did not even exit our aircraft and one mobile lounge delivered some additional passengers for the continuing flight to Dallas. A year or so later I arrived and departed from Dulles airport during my employment with the United States Treasury Department. Several such trips were made during my nine years of service with the Treasury. The original and expanded main Saarinen terminal is arguably the most beautiful, striking airport terminal in the world. The primary air gate way to any nation's capital should be so distinctive!
Here is a great book if your looking for an enjoyable read. The author reveals some info of the airport acquisition details and how 87 families and 300 structures were moved, burned down or bulldozed to make way for the airport. A nice pictures look at the surrounding areas or towns that have long been forgotten and the houses that went with them.
Very disappointed in this purchase. Hardly any views of airplanes. Not worth the money at all. Unlike the others of other airports in this series.

This book was hilarious reading out loud with my toddler. The child is supposed to answer NO! to the pigeon everytime he asks to drive the bus which makes it really fun and silly. We have the stuffed toy that we purchased separately and use it when reading. Looking forward to getting more from this series.
love this book. it is very cute, funny story and easy to follow. i bought this for a friend who is learning spanish. very cute!
I used this book as a persuasive tool to teach my kinder students. They loved it as well as the Pigeon. My students interacted by telling the Pigeon “Noâ€. They loved the way the Pigeon tried to get them to change their minds.
My Spanish speaking students love the pigeon books and were so excited to get a copy in Spanish! I was happy it for in my classroom budget. After comparing prices at the time I found it cheaper to buy one book at a time vs. Sombre of the packs you can order of Mo Willems books. The shipping was timely.

Hard to find Spanish only story books for toddlers, on Amazon. This book is delightfully fun to read. I can't speak to the translation quality, but the flow/rhythm of the story is superb. My 2 year old is learning Spanish, and he enjoys this book immensely.
